SADE Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de & ANONYME
1780. s.d. (ca. 1775), 19,8x27,1cm, 9 pages sur 5 feuillets. - s.d. [Click Below for Full Description]

Griselini, Francesco.
Vienna, Johann Paul Krauß, 1780. 4to. 2 parts in one volume. (10), 301, (1) pp. (2), 135, (1) pp. With 8 folded numbered engraved plates and 1 folded engraved map. Contemporary half calf with giltstamped label to gilt spine, boards covered with unsophisticated grey paper by a later owner. First German edition of this description of the Banat of Temeswar. Between September 1774 and March 1777, the Italian scholar Griselini (1717-87) travelled the Banat on behalf of the Temeswar local government and corresponded with numerous persons of rank. He published his observations in Milan in 1780; the German edition, which the author dedicated to Empress Maria Theresia, appeared almost simultaneously in Vienna. The volume consists of two parts, the first treating the history of the Banat of Temes, the second discussing geographical aspects of the region. The plates include plans of villages, but also depict houses, landscapes, sculptures and coinage. The large folded map shows the Banat of Temeswar in its entirety. - Title-page somewhat stained. 19th century ownership stamps from the library of the Salzburg Stadtmuseum (cancelled) to verso of title-page, to the last page and to the plates. Lower third of the last page of part I is torn away without loss to text (rebacked with old paper). Some browning throughout, modern endpapers. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) with his handwritten and stamped ownership, dated 1974, to the flyleaf. Wurzbach V, 356. Petrik I, 939 (listing the map separately). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Herbert, William
Printed for Henry Gregory, London, 1780. 4to, pp. xxxvi, 554 (i.e. 544) + frontispiece and 1 other plate. Contemporary calf, covered at an early date with sailcloth which has been stitched across the pastedowns. Both plates mounted (probably at time of original binding), some light spotting, a few leaves slightly proud with edges soiled as a result, last few gatherings slightly affected by damp in the upper blank corner. The hidden calf binding rubbed and worn, sailcloth grubby, hinges neatly reinforced, rear flyleaf torn and partially reinforced with archival tape. Small library stamp to verso of title-page. The greatly expanded fifth edition of this important guide to the nautical routes to the East Indies, first published in 1758. A second and third edition (in fact the same sheets with a slip pasted over the edition statement) followed the next year, with a proper third edition in 1767 and a fourth in 1775 - each of these editions containing minimal changes and all with text filling less than 150 pages. 'Herbert. would acquire the stock, copyright, and blocks of a work, then, incorporating new material, publish a greatly improved edition. Thus he annotated an interleaved copy of the 1765 edition of the New Directory (which was sold in 1798 after his death) and his writing and editorial career began to take off' (ODNB). But in the case of this work the great improvement came with the passing of the editorship to Samuel Dunn (d. 1794), a teacher of mathematics and navigation, who more than trebled the size of the text. The earlier editions, being slimmer and per … [Click Below for Full Description]

Troil's letters contain details of the expedition's observations on Hecla and other volcanoes, geysers, Icelandic culture and related matters. According to a letter published in the French edition of this work, the English translation was made from the 1779 German edition by the daughter of Johann Forster, Cook's principal naturalist on his second voyage. En Madrid, en la Imprenta de Pedro Marin. 1780. in-8. 4ff. 373pp. (1f.blanc). 2 planches dont 1 dépliante. Plein vélin du temps, dos lisse titré à l'encre brune. Edition Originale. Palau, 162909. One of the keystone works on the history of Russian America, including a number of narratives of exploration herein published for the first time in English. Coxe spent some time in Russia, working to establish the authenticity of the narratives he had collected. This volume proved an immensely popular work. A supplement appeared in 1787, and two other slightly revised editions appeared before a much expanded fourth was published in 1803. The engraved maps include a general map of Russia, one of Krenitzin and Levasheff's voyage, one of Synd's voyage, and one of Shalauroff's voyage (with an inset of the Bear Islands). Finally, there is a folding engraved view of the Chinese town of Maimatschin. Also included is a "Specimen of the Aleutian Language," consisting of twelve words and numerals 1 through 10. Friedrich II.
Berlin, G. J. Decker, 1780. Kaum stockfleckig. Gutes Exemplar. – Goed. IV 1, 4, 32; Leithäuser 427; Borst 395. [Attributes: First Edition]

APOLLONIUS RODIUS.
Bauer e Treuttel, 1780. In 8° (175 x110), pagg. XIV, 214, 244. Apollonio Rodio (295 a.C. First Brunck Edition. Dibdin: "the principal objection urged against it is, the altering of the text without the authority of the MSS. but from conjecture alone. If Brunck had consulted MSS. he might have given better readings. In this respect, say the reviewers, he has been more superstitious than religious: the notes and emendations are, however, valuable, and superior to those of preceding editions; so that Brunck has certainly performed the part of a skilful interpreter of the text of his author."

Elliot, Andrew)
New York? c. -2, 1780. 8vo., 11, 126,(2)pp., lacking title page, annotated in margins throughout in a small neatly written hand (approx 1450 words relating to 27 passages in the text), some underlinings and sentences marked for attention, disbound, but with still attached the front board from the binding of the volume of tracts that this was a part of, on which is the bookplate "Kinnaird" of the Carnegie Family at Kinnaird Castle, near Brechin. This heavily annotated copy of David Hartley's 'Letters on the American War' contains vital information regarding the history of the United States in its infancy. It is quite clear from the observations being made that the annotator has a legal background and is extremely well-informed of the events unfolding in America both prior to and during the ever growing revolt against the taxes imposed by Britain. His writings are critical of some of Hartley's observations, presenting in many cases a legal challenge. He notes that Hartley is conciliatory towards the Americans, and regularly picks him up on points of legality. It is clear as he progresses through the letters that he becomes increasingly more vexed by what he reads. This is particularly so on page 58 in Letter 11. The passage in question is "to return to the state of 1763, which therefore implies the taking this thorn out of his side, viz. the Tea Tax" to which he comments "not this Tea Tax alone but the repealing the whole system of American Laws of Taxation. I am convinced the principle of the Act was not the establishing a mere crown revenue as it was done in consequence of … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

They include the newly formed United States of America, as well as specific areas such as Texas, Louisiana, Baja California, and parts of Florida and Northern Mexico, as well as Canada and Cuba. Bonne's work marks an important step in the evolution of cartography from a decorative work towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. Bonne (1727-1794) was one of the most prominent cartographers of the late eighteenth century. He was appointed as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine (Department of the Navy). Condillac, Étienne Bonnot de
L’Esprit, Debure l’aîné, Paris, 1780. Penned by French Enlightenment philosopher Étienne Condillac, this remarkable and original treatise is a study of observations and analyses made from nature. ***Contemporary speckled sheepskin with decorative spine gilt, red stained edges, and marbled endpapers– spine head chipped, corners bumped and a bit worn, small wormholes on the front cover and first third of fore-edge, small chip on the rear cover. Internally quite clean and withal a Very Good, beautiful copy of a scarce book – only two appearances at auction in the last 30 years, and just 5 located on OCLC. ***** “Although posterity has not hoisted him to the same level as other thinkers of the Enlightenment, Condillac asserts himself as one of the most penetrating psychologists of his century. With Voltaire, he represents one of the main introducers in France of the principles of the English philosopher John Locke, whom he develops in a systematic way. “(Joode) ******** ‘Étienne Bonnot, Abbé de Condillac, was the chief exponent of a radically empiricist account of the workings of the mind that has since come to be referred to as “sensationism.” Whereas John Locke’s empiricism followed upon a rejection of innate principles and innate ideas, Condillac went further and rejected innate abilities as well. On his version of empiricism, experience not only provides us with “ideas” or the raw materials for knowledge, it also teaches us how to focus attention, remember, imagine, abstract, judge, and reason. It forms our desires and teaches us what to will. Moreover, it provides us with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de SADE, ANONYME
Manuscript, not selected by the author for the Voyage d'Italie [Reflections on Justice and the Death Penalty]N. d. [c. 1775], 19,8 x 27,1 cm, 9 pages on 5 leavesUnpublished manuscript written in an unknown hand, probably that of one of the Marquis' scribes. Crossings-out and strikethroughs by the scribe and 7 annotations and strikethroughs by the Marquis de Sade.Provenance: family archives.Very important preparatory manuscript for the Voyage d'Italie, in which the young Marquis de Sade, under the cover of a study of the Roman judicial system, develops the great philosophical themes of his future novels. The first leaf of the manuscript is missing; the Marquis did not retain it during the different stages in which he developed his text. We know this because the notebook was found in this state when his chest, which had been kept sealed by the family since his death in 1814, was opened in 1948. This fine unpublished manuscript attests to Sade's meticulous method of working. When preparing to write his Voyage d'Italie, Sade initially received assistance from several correspondents, notably Mesny and Iberti, two friends whom he had met on his travels. The Marquis used the very detailed notes contained in their letters, put them in order, and then drafted the text of his future publication with the help of a scribe. Our manuscript falls within this third and penultimate working stage, before the final polishing of the text.Le Voyage d'Italie, a vast encyclopedic project in w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Irwin supported Pigot, and in August he was suspended from the company's service. Early in 1777 he left India in order to seek redress in England. Irwin later published an account of his journey home, which was entitled 'A series of adventures [...]'. In this he displayed his classical education and described his experiences and observations during the journey, which lasted eleven months [...] Irwin returned to India in 1780 as a senior merchant and his route was again overland, but this time via Aleppo, Baghdad, and the Persian Gulf" (ODNB).
