Angels ] ANONYMOUS.
NP ND [ 1780 ? ], NP. Hardcover. Slim octavo. 8pp. Pamphlet. Bound in modern half blue cloth with marbled boards with printed title-label on front board. Three woodcut illustrations. An extremely rare anonymous late eighteen-century pamphlet (the National Library of Scotland and several other sources date it at circa 1780). The pamphlet describes an encounter between a Mr. Jones, a minister, of Rugby in Warwickshire, and an angel who took the form of an old man. Aside from chastening Jones for thoughts he had harboured about quitting preaching, the angel issued a number of prophecies, "the Heathens shall come out of far countries, and the Grand Turk shall destroy Christendom." "the French King shall endeavour to make himself great and grand, for then great preparations for war shall be made throughout Europe, ." "there will be a very remarkable comet seen in several parts of Great Britain, but particularly in the northern parts of Scotland" etc. etc. Three woodcuts, with one a quite charming depiction of an angel. Another edition of the pamphlet exists, "Printed and sold in Aldermary church-yard Bow-Lane, London" but order of precedence is not known. Rare. A bright clean VG+ copy in a VG+ if rather garish, modern binding. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BURGOYNE, John (1722-1792)
London: printed for John Almon, 1780. Quarto. (10 1/2 x 8 5/8 inches). viii,140,lxii,[1, "Advertisement"]pp. 1 folding engraved map with route marked by hand in red, 5 folding engraved plans of battles or engagements (2 with overlays, all with positions and some maneuvers marked by hand in colors), all by William Faden. Expertly bound to style in half russia and contemporary marbled paper covered boards, spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt on either side of each band, red morocco lettering pieceProvenance: Johnstone (armorial bookplate)The first edition of the most important source for information about Burgoyne's campaign during the Revolutionary War.In this work General Burgoyne presents to the House of Commons his defense of his conduct as the commander of the British expedition down the Hudson Valley from Canada in 1777. The expedition ended in disaster at Saratoga, where nearly 20,000 American forces under General Gates soundly defeated Burgoyne's army of 5,000 and forced his surrender. His basic point was that he had asked for a force of 12,000 men to accomplish what had been asked of him and eventually he had been forced to fight with an army that initially numbered a little over half that number. The maps and plans by William Faden are excellent and help to complete a work that is the most important contemporary printed source of information about the campaign.Howes B968; Lande 69; Sabin 9255; Streeter Sale 794; TPL 503.

MAYER, Luigi.
1780. Gouache and watercolour, signed Luigi Mayer Rom[ano] Dipinti, within a grey-washed and ink-ruled border incorporating the title field, overall size 44 x 60 cm (17 1/4 x 23 5/8 in). The Divan-i Hümayun, or the Imperial Council in English, was the de facto cabinet of the Ottoman Empire for most of its history. Initially an informal gathering of the senior ministers presided over by the Sultan in person, in the mid-15th century the Council's composition and function became firmly regulated. The Grand Vizier, who became the Sultan's deputy as the head of government, assumed the role of chairing the Council, which comprised also the other viziers, charged with military and political affairs, the two kadiaskers or military judges, the defterdars in charge of finances, the nisanci in charge of the palace scribal service, and later the Kapudan Pasha, the head of the Ottoman Navy, also occasionally the beylerbeyi of Rumelia and the Agha of the Janissaries. The Council met in a dedicated building in the second courtyard of the Topkapi Palace, initially daily, then for four days a week by the 16th century. Its remit encompassed all matters of governance of the Empire, although the exact proceedings are no longer known. It was assisted by an extensive secretarial bureaucracy under the reis ül-küttab for the drafting of appropriate documents and the keeping of records. The Imperial Council remained the main executive organ of the Ottoman state until the mid-17th century, after which it lost most of its power to the office of the Grand Vizier. With the Tanzimat reforms of the early … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANVILLE (Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d').
Paris, Dezauche, [circa 1780]. 480 x 698 mm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Voltaire
Paris: 1780. Outlawed, burned, and banned - Voltaire's debauched satire of Joan of Arc and other saints. La Pucelle d'Orleans, poëme en vingt-un chants(The Maid of Orleans, A Poem in Twenty-one Cantos) Voltaire Paris, 1780 Octavo. Two parts in one volume. Engraved frontispiece and 21 vignettes by Duplessis-Bertaux. One of the rare large paper copies. Bound in 19th century full red morocco and housed in a decorative slipcase by the master binders, Chambolle-Duru. Raised bands, gilt title with gilt dentelles and edges. Marbled endpapers. Beautiful woodcut tailpieces at the end of each canto. A gorgeous, wide margined copy. Fine. An unauthorized version was first printed in 1755. The official condemnation of the Church in 1767 did not stop the book from being published throughout the rest of the 18th century. "What Voltaire satirized in La Pucelle was not [simply] the historic figure of Joan, but the legends that had grown up about her and the institutions that supported them. He took delight in disbelief of the heroine's legendary virginity, and exploited the satiric possibilities of this along with other human foibles, such as hypocrisy, greed, superstition, and stupidity. Voltaire's main thrust of the parody is the satire of the saints - showing them as mythologized characters of their own unhistoric legends, resembling the pagan deities of classical epics who enjoy their immortality with only slightly more power than ordinary mortals, while remaining subject to all the human weaknesses. They lack absolute power and must, therefore, like courtiers, resort to the all too hum … [Click Below for Full Description]

Professionally cleaned of water damage. Two small holes. See pictures and description for details. Found this in a shop in Romania. It was imported from Germany and prior to that, not sure. It measures 13.5 x 11.5". It might have been in a book. The right edge appears to be cut from something. The image is Seslavin, Aleksandr Nikich, 1780 - 1858, Russian general, equestrian half length, lithograph, Russia, 1815. There is a copy of this in the State Historical Museum in Moscow. When I found it the piece was pasted to a larger piece of paper for preservation. It was also stained. I had it professionally removed from the backing and had the stains removed. There are two small holes, neither distract from the image. I have only seen one other copy of this and that is from the site that identified it. I am completely unsure as to the value as such. AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Entered at Stationers Hall. [c.1780] Single sheet folio broadside, printed in two columns; two manuscript annotations (totalling the number and weight of the ships' guns) by the naval officer, Lt John Wood, 1792â€"1873, or possibly his father, Capt. John Wood, 1766â€"1820, with a blue paper envelope inscribed by the younger Wood ('. . . Four hours of hard fought action'); old folds. v.g. 41 x 50cmNot recorded in ESTC or Copac. A broadside printed to accompany an engraving of a celebrated naval action between the English and French during the American Revolutionary War (joined by France in 1778). With severe losses on both sides, it was 'perhaps the stiffest and most stubbornly contested encounter in the history of the Navy under sail' (David Mathew, 'British Seamen', in British Adventure, ed. W. J. Turner, 1947, p. 184). Several dramatic paintings of the engagement were produced and engravings published, but we have not been able to identify the image corresponding exactly to that described in the present text, in which 'Farmer is seen upon the deck, in his shirt, very bloody ... his little finger shot away: he is talking with Mr. Roberts his first lieutenant, who was wounded in the lower arm... The Surveillante had her sweeps cut, and with the assistance of a boat at her head, was rowing from the Quebec. The brave Couderic is seen upon deck with his speaking trumpet in his hand'. The engravings that we have located focus less directly on the two commanders, depicting, from a distance, the Quebec in flames, the disabled Surveillante beside her, with struggling survi … [Click Below for Full Description]

». The Book of Common Prayer, Cambridge, c1780With A New version of the Psalms of David, Cambridge, 1800Key feature: The fore-edge painting is of a truly impressive quality About the book: For sale is a beautiful late 1700's Book of Common Prayer with an incredible fore-edge painting. Fore-edge paintings are notoriously rare - look at the book and you see gilded edges but fans the pages and a hidden panting appears. Many lack detail or definition, but this is one of the sharpest and most impressive I've seen - judge the photos for yourself. The panting shows St Paul's Cathedral in London - a wonderful topic for a book of Christianity like this. It's very rare to find a Book of Common Prayer of this age with a quality fore-edge painting. Best offers considered. Condition report: In Good Antique Condition See photos for accurate description. Covers are quite bright, with general scuffing and wear as expected but gilding nice Edge of text block brightly glided. Initial ten or so pages jut out a few millimeters (see photo) but otherwise quite well bound Some light wear throughout but a good book Painting is rather bright, with a few small instances where the pages jut out a little but overall an excellent example Please note that I am happy to post worldwide but please contact me for a price first!

A very fine set from Bibliothecae Heideggeriana (ex libris). First issue of this stupendous illustrated edition by the Spanish Royal Academy Printer Joaquín Ibarra. It is the most famous and the most beautifully produced of all Quixote's editions, and is commonly regarded as the very masterpiece of Spanish printing (Brunet, I 1749: "Cette édition est un vrai chef-d'oeuvre typographique"; Updike, I 7: «The finest edition of Don Quixote that has ever been printed» Right after its first edition in 1605 and 1615, Cervantes' novel met immediate success in Spain and all over Europe; at the same time, its rapid diffusion subverted the text, multiplying the orthographic mistakes and the variations from the original (so the Introduction to Ibarra's edition: "among the many editions that have been made of Don Quixote within and without the kingdom, it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Huge mixed 25 book lot of plays, poetry, and more mainly from William Shakespeare but there are a few others as well. There are some very old vintage books and a couple newer, there is also a mix of hardcover and paperback. Please look through the photos to see all the titles and authors, the books are in good readable condition without torn pages but some of the old books definitely have some wear to them while others look good. There are 5 brown books that look alike but the one I have pictured to side (has a gold ribbon/page marker inside) is blank. I'm not sure if it's just a journal that happens to match the other books or maybe it's blank to write your own plays or poems in?!
