Finely engraved title-page, one folding engraved map, & numerous large & fine engraved head- & tail-pieces. xx, 464, [34] pp. Folio, cont. marbled sheep (lower cover a little abraded), spine richly & brightly gilt, orange morocco lettering piece on spine. Vienna: M. A. Schmidt, 1780. First edition, and a really fine copy, of this beautifully decorated and attractive book. This work contains a detailed account and history, district by district, of the mines of Bohemia, an area of great mineral wealth including coal, lignite, iron, and the raw materials for porcelain. Peithner provides much information on the earlier and contemporary mineralogical and geological histories of the area. Also included is a chapter on the rivers and streams contributing to the Moldau, Elbe, and Eger rivers, with mineralogical remarks. There is a long section of the mining laws and regulations which apply to the region. Peithner (1727-92), was professor of mining at Prague and later became professor of mining law at Chemnitz and privy councillor at Vienna. This copy has none of the foxing or browning which usually is present. The fine head- and tail-pieces are signed by Jacob Adam and J.E. Mansfeld. ? Hoover 629. Poggendorff, II, 388-89.

[N.p., 1780. [1]p., 3 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Minor wear and soiling. Very good. Printed certificate signed by Capt. John Barry, captain of the first ship in the Continental Navy. The document reads: "I do hereby certify, That the Bearer, [blank] late [blank] on board the [blank] under my command, is entitled to whatever share or portion of prize-money may accrue to him from [blank] to [blank] [signed] John Barry Capt." Capt. John Barry (1745-1803) entered the service of the Patriot cause in late 1775, taking command first of the Alfred and subsequently the Lexington. On April 6, 1776, the Lexington engaged with the British sloop Edward, capturing the British vessel and resulting in the first American naval victory of the war. Following the war, Barry was made a senior captain in the new United States Navy and effectively protected U.S. shipping interests in the West Indies during the Quasi War with France. He is credited with developing both the navy and its finest commanding officers, including Stephen Decatur. A scarce and ephemeral piece of American naval history. The only example of such a form, also unaccomplished, realized $1100 at Christie's in 1993.

Representation of the New Shaving Machine, whereby a number of persons may be done at the same time with expedition ease and safety. Manufactured & sold by D. Merry & Son, Birmingham.

(Birmingham.) [c.1780?] Uncoloured etching, illustration above & beneath 17 & 3 lines of text respectively; a few marginal tears & creases not affecting image, a few spots. 24 x 38cm with good margins.Copac records the Wellcome only; OCLC adds Yale & the Morgan Library; George (BM Satires) notes the existence of this print but does not record a copy at the BM. A wonderfully bizarre contraption, with a detailed key. On the back right wall is a portrait of Tim Bobbin, pseudonym of the Rochdale caricaturist and self-styled 'Lancashire Hogarth', after a known self-portrait by Collier. The print appears to be a satire on industrialisation and mechanisation. Six men sit side by side in anticipation of being shaved simultaneously by the 'New Shaving Machine'. The notice 'To the Public' announces: 'Whereas the wonderful powers of this useful Machine are yet but little known and even doubted by those who have not seen it, the Inventor has for their satisfaction prefixed a Plate representing his Shaving and Dressing Room with six Customers sitting. Pledges himself that his Machine will be found to do its work in the most safe, smooth and efficacious manner, with three scrapes or movements, and that those who shall have once tried it will no longer entertain any doubts on the subject ...'

Atlas et Description minéralogique de la France, Entrepris par ordre du Roi

32 fine folding engraved plates (of which five are finely hand-colored). xii, 212 pp., one leaf of errata (recto) & approbation (verso). Folio, cont. mottled sheep (some rubbing to extremities), spine gilt, red & green morocco lettering pieces on spine. Paris: Didot l'ainé et al., 1780. First edition, and a fine copy, of the great series of maps which constitute the first geological atlas, compiled by Guettard and his disciple Lavoisier (with the later assistance of Monnet). "These maps, so far as I know, were the first ever constructed to express the superficial distribution of minerals and rocks. The gifted Frenchman [Guettard] who produced them is thus the father of all the national Geological Surveys which have been instituted."-Geikie, The Founders of Geology, p. 115-(& see the entire chapter which is devoted to Guettard and his geological achievements). In 1766 Henri Bertin, Minister and Secretary of State in charge of mining, commissioned a geological survey of France to be compiled by Guettard and his protégé, the young Antoine Laurent Lavoisier. Guettard and Lavoisier had begun collecting field notes for the project as early as 1763, and in 1767 they embarked on a geological tour of the east of France. When Lavoisier returned to Paris he assumed most of the responsibility for supervising the production of the geological maps. By 1770 he and Guettard had overseen the completion of sixteen plates, and by 1777 they had partially completed an almost equal number. According to Lavoisier's own statement, all plates dated 1766 and 1767 were prepared with his assistance. The atlas was to have contained 230 maps in all, but this total was never reached. "Presently the retirement of Guettard and political intrigues intervened, and the project was handed over to Monnet, inspector general of mines, for completion. Monnet added 16 more plates and a long text, publishing the whole as a first part of the atlas. It was issued under the joint authorship of Guettard and Monnet. All of Lavoisier's contributions were ignored, except for the first sixteen plates; the wealth of information that had been gathered was used without his permission. The feature of showing levels of geological strata was due to Lavoisier's initiative, a point Monnet chose to withhold. The former, angered by this treatment, protested bitterly, but to no avail. Monnet became his obstinate enemy, continuing to attack the new chemistry even after Lavoisier's execution… "No further instalments of the mineralogical atlas ever appeared."-Duveen & Klickstein, p. 238 (& see their Supplement, pp. 129-32, which contains additional information regarding the publication history). Fine copy and now quite rare. The green morocco lettering piece on the spine is lettered "I. Partie." Bookplates of E. Bucaille and Frederic Cheron. ? D.S.B., V, pp. 577-79. London, 1780. [4],86pp. Modern paper boards, printed paper labels. Very minor foxing and soiling. Very good plus. In a half morocco and cloth folder. Collection of letters published in local newspapers and assembled here by the author, identified as George Phillips Towry by presentation inscriptions in copies at the University of Michigan and the John Carter Brown Library. Towry was a naval officer who served in the Americas for some time. In his preface he notes that his object "is truly no other than to promote national security and permanent peace; which to him seems irreconcilable with [Britain's] retention of so many remote, and several of them burthensome, or unproductive territories, bordering upon the dominions of other powerful states; or holding it as a state maxim, that the colonies and our sister island ought to be subject to our Parliament, especially when it cannot be made to appear to be either to their interest, or to that of the community at large, that such a system should continue to exist for the future." Scarce. Only a handful of copies in ESTC, and no copies appearing in auction records for the past forty years. ESTC T107848. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 80-87. SABIN 56626.

Autograph receipt signed (in third person within the text). Tonnerre, 17. V. 1780.

1780. ¾ p. Large 8vo. Receipt for household expenses for "Mad.lle la D'Éon". - Éon de Beaumont was a French transsexual political adventurer, secret agent of Louis XV in Russia (1755), then minister to England. The term "eonism" denoting the tendency to adopt the costume and manners of the opposite sex, is derived from his name. Despite d'Éon's wearing a dragoon's uniform all the time, there were rumors that he was actually a woman, and a betting pool was started on the London Stock Exchange about his true sex. D'Éon finally claimed to be physically not a man, but a woman, and demanded recognition by the government as such. King Louis XVI and his court complied, but demanded that d'Éon dress appropriately and wear women's clothing. D'Éon agreed, especially when the king granted him funds for a new wardrobe. Overall, Charles d'Éon spent his first 49 years as a man, and his last 33 years as a woman. Upon death, a council of physicians discovered that d'Éon's body was anatomically male.

Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren. Amsterdam, heirs of David Klippink, 1780.

1780. 8vo. 2 parts in 1 vol. XXVI, 182 pp. (4), 190 pp. With engr. frontispiece and including both half-titles. Contemp. half calf with gilt title and emblems on spine. Portrait frontispiece of "Mohammed, son of Abdullah, of the tribe of Koreis, the descendant of Ishmael". Very rare sole edition of this biography of Mohammed and history of the Arab people, painting a picture of him as a strong leader who brought the Arab tribes out of barbarity and into modern civilization. A distinct product of the European Enlightenment - in which ingrained attitudes towards religious were suddenly thrown into question - the present work marks a fascinating turning point in European views of the Prophet, adopting the rather admiring tone which would be echoed throughout 19th century biographies. - "Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the first major re-assessments of Muhammad came from a Dutchman, Johan Nomsz; after all, historians nowadays agree that it was in the relatively tolerant culture of the Northern Netherlands that the Enlightenment was actually born and came to fruition. In 1780, Nomsz published Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren, 'Muhammad, or the Reform of the Arabs'. The text is part prose play, part historical analysis. In it, Nomsz sketches the rise of Islam through the life of Muhammad as he had been able to reconstruct it from a number of scholarly works that had become available in Europe. His Muhammad is both a true prophet and a great statesman" (Rietbergen, Europe: A Cultural History, p. 143). In his preface, Nomsz insists on the name 'Mohammed' rather than the 'Mahomet' favored by other, misinformed European observers. - Half-title of Part 1 with closed repaired tear, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh. Very rare. OCLC shows just a handful of copies outside the Netherlands - and just one in American institutional libraries, at Yale. OCLC 898979382.

Kaum stockfleckig. Gutes Exemplar. – Goed. IV 1, 4, 32. Leithäuser 427. Borst 395. [Attributes: First Edition]
