Histoire Philosophique Et Politique Des Etablissemens Et Du Commerce Des Europeens Dans Les Deux Indes. 5 Vols: 4 Text + Atlas

Geneva: Jean-Leonard Pellet 1780 - 5 volumes. Jean-Leonard Pellet, 1780 printing. Contemporary full mottled calf, marbled edges and endpapers. 25 maps are of portions of North and South America and the Caribbean. A large part of the work is said to have been written by Diderot, and others. Taking a radical anti-imperialistic stance, the nineteen books that comprised the original work covered the history of European colonization of India, the East Indies, China, parts of Africa, and the Americas. Much of the success, and subsequent reputation, of the Histoire was based on its attacks on tyranny, slavery and colonial exploitation, and it quickly became one of the basic texts for the humanitarian movement. The book was condemned by the French parliament and church dignitaries, and Raynal was obliged to leave France. Bindings variously worn/robbed, few joints starting. Mostlylight toning throughout, occasional foxing and dampstain (usually marginal). Lacking tables. 49 double-page maps. Vol 1: xvi,741,[i] pp. 2 pencil notations to lowermargin of title. Vol 2: [4], viii,485,[i] pp. Vol 3: [xvi],629,[i]pp. Vol 4: [4], viii,770,[i]pp. Atlas: No formal title page, half title reads, "Atlas De Toutes Les PertiesConnues Du Globe Terrestre, Dresse Pour L'Histoire Philosophique Et Politique des Etablissemens et du Commcerce Des Europeens Dans Les Duex Indes." [4]28pp.49 double-page maps by Rigobert Bonne, several crediting Andre as engraver in margin at lower right. (Maps 1-2) World, in hemispheres and as Mercator projection. (3) Europe. (4) Asia. (5) Africa. (6-8) Mediterranean locales. (9-16) African & Asian regions. (17-22) European countries. (23) Philippines & southeast Asia. (24) Russian Empire, including Arctic coast, Kamchatka, Bering Strait, and part of northwestern North America. Reflecting the uncertainty about coastlines in northeastern Asia and northwestern North America, map No. 24 shows a group of islands, "Archipel du Nord," east of Kamchatka, south of the Bering Strait, and west of the Aleutian Islands' actual location. (25) North America, from Greenland to Colombia and the Caribbean. Shows Alaska as much narrower than its actual shape, with theisland group to its west. (26) Caribbean. (27-35) Central & South American locales. (36-41) Caribbean islands. (42-43) Northern Africa. (44) Eastern Canada. (45)Central Canada, from James Bay to modern-day American upper midwest, labeling dozens of tribes and rivers of the Mississippi basin. (47-48) United States. (49) 7maps of Caribbean islands.         [NEW ZEALAND] Autograph letter signed by Robert Torrens, to Benjamin Hawes M.P., 1847

Autograph letter signed by the political economist Robert Torrens (1780-1864). Single sheet, 180 x 105 mm. 7 Sloane Street, 1 April 1847; to Benjamin Hawes M.P. (under-secretary of state for the Colonies), explaining that enclosed is a copy of 'the scheme for Emigration devised by Mr. Edward Gibbon Wakefield and Mr. Godley. I beg to state that I have had no participation in this concoction.' Signed R. Torrens. Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796-1862) had been instrumental in setting up the New Zealand Association (1837), later known as the New Zealand Company, which was intended to organise and oversee English colonisation of various settlements in New Zealand. Wakefield invited John Robert Godley (1814-1861) to lead the settlement of a new colony in New Zealand which was to follow the teachings of the Church of England, and to this end the Canterbury Association was formed in 1848 (the result of the scheme for emigration alluded to in this letter). Captain Joseph Thomas was chosen to negotiate a purchase of land from the New Zealand Company and the new settlement was named Christ Church. Godley arrived in April 1850 in order to prepare the site for the first settlers, who arrived at Lyttelton in a fleet of four ships in December of that year. Godley returned to England at the end of 1852, but his contribution to civic planning was crucial in this early period, and he is recognised as the founder of Canterbury. Robert Torrens had published in 1835 the work Colonization of South Australia and was the major force behind the structuring of the settlement of that colony. His ideas had, however, brought South Australia close to financial disaster by the early 1840s. Torrens and Edward Gibbon Wakefield were bitter opponents in the political arena, their views on emigration to the colonies differing markedly, as the wording of Torrens’ letter boldly illustrates. Pre-dating as it does the formation of the Canterbury Association, this manuscript document relates to the most embryonic phase of the foundation of Christchurch.

A Representation of the Interview between Commodore Byron & the Patagonians

An unsigned late-eighteenth-century watercolour of one of the most fascinating subjects in the history of eighteenth-century voyages: Commodore Byron's meeting with the supposed "giants" of Patagonia. The legend of the strikingly tall Patagonians has its origins in Magellan's voyage in the 1520s. According to Pigafetta's account, Magellan encountered a race of giants whom he referred to as "Patagons" because of their large feet. Hence the southern tip of South America came to be known as Patagonia. Further sixteenth-century reports of the giant Patagonians came from Francis Fletcher, the chaplain serving with Sir Francis Drake, and from Anthonie Knivet, who had sailed with Sir Thomas Cavendish, who claimed to have seen dead bodies in Patagonia measuring 'over twelve feet in length'. In the early-eighteenth century Captains Harrington and Carmen in 1704 both corroborated the story. The story gained popular currency after the return of Byron's ship Dolphin from her circumnavigation. While the ship lay in dock, a rumour leaked out that the crew had encountered a tribe of 'nine-foot giants' in Patagonia in 1764. The account of Byron's meeting with the giants first appeared in print on 9 May 1766 in the Gentleman's Magazine, and was followed by other newspaper reports. Byron's own account, with its well-known engraved frontispiece of European officers standing waist-high to enormous Patagonians, was published in 1766. As Bernard Smith points out, Byron did not have the luxury of an artist on board the Dolphin to record this meeting. Instead it was left to an artist in London to furnish the illustration from Byron's description of events: 'one of them, who afterwards appeared to be a Chief, came towards me: he was of a gigantic stature, and seemed to realize the tales of monsters in a human shape...'. Yet despite the presence of skilled artists and observers on the Endeavour voyage of 1764, which put the height of male Patagonians at between 'five feet eight inches to five feet ten inches', the myth persisted. This was in large part due to Hawkesworth's combined narrative of the voyages of Byron, Cook and others published in 1773, which concluded that the giants did indeed exist. An engraved plate depicting the "interview" with Byron shows the Patagonians towering head and shoulders above the Englishmen. This is an interesting contemporary watercolour version of the giants, based on the engraving from Hawkesworth. The popular myth of the Patagonians continued to loom large in the public imagination and as a topic for furious philosophical debate. It was emblematic of the excitement of discovery of the New World and its strange inhabitants. An extensive discussion of the Patagonian Giants myth by the late Helen Wallis appears in Gallagher, R., ed., Byron's Journal of his Circumnavigation 1764-1766, Hakluyt Society, 1964. For the Patagonian Giants question in general, see Helen Wallis's article "The Patagonian Giants", Appendix 1, 185-96, in Robert E. Gallagher (ed.), Byron's Journal of his Circumnavigation 1764-1766 (Hakluyt Society, 1964). A good summary of the literary aspects of the myth is to be found at Princeton University's Department of English site

Plano de la Ciudad de los Reyes, o Lima Capital del Reino de Peru

Magnificent manuscript cartographic rendering of Lima, executed in pen and ink, with absolutely contemporary wash color; comprises the entire city, as well as the outskirts, allowing a clear view of the appearance of the city in the 18th century. Although undated, we can establish it´s date in the later decades of the 18th century, both for it´s maker and his participation in the towers of the Cathedral of Lima. North is oriented to the upper left. A numbered key identifies 70 locations within the walled city (churches, hospitals, chapels, the bridge, parishes); a further numbered key points out 14 additional locations (gates, and locations outside the city). Cartographically, the map resembles the one printed by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, however this is far superior, clearly having made use of more updated sources of information. Martorell (d. 1835 - Lima) was born in Catalonia, although he apparently spent most of his life in Peru: first under Spanish rule, and later during the Republic. As an architect, he can be defined as a neoclassicist. Amongst his most illustrious legacies are the Towers of the Cathedral of Lima. "Identica trascendencia tuvieron las torres (c. 1796 - 1800) para la arquitectura local, previa modificacion del aspecto que inicialmente les habia otorgado Martorell" (Kusunoki Rodriguez, Entre Roma clasica y Jerusalen santa: utopias urbanas en Lima ilustrada). Martorell can be named amongst the great architects active in Lima by the second half of the 18th century and beginnings of the 19th. Most of his works are not yet identified, as pointed by San Cristobal "Habrá que investigar en lo sucesivo más ampliamente cuales fueron las obras ejecutadas por Martorell. No aparece mencionado por el Diccionario de Mendiburu". Vargas Ugarte mentions him as having participated in the towers of the Cathedral of Arequipa as well. San Cristobal, Antonio, "Ignacio Martorell y las Torres de la Catedral de Lima", Historica, Vol. XIX, N 2 (1995).

London: 1780 - [4], 149, [2 publisher advts], [1 blank] pp. Modern paper over boards, printed title label on spine. Two blank corner chips, archival repair to gutter of title page. Else Fine. This is the first London edition. The first edition, which issued from New York in 1777, is exceedingly rare, as is the New York 1780. "Practically all copies of original edition destroyed by a New York mob" [Howes]. Galloway had been the civil administrator of Philadelphia during the winter of 1777-1778, serving under the orders of Howe, who had "found his services invaluable in the Philadelphia campaign" [DAB]. Upon its capture by American forces he fled to England, becoming "the spokesman of the American Loyalists" [id.] and attacking Howe for incompetence. Here he gives some unwelcome advice to Howe on how he could have won the War. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Howes G47aa. JCB European Americana 2640. Adams Controversy 80-35a. Each 14 x 9 cm.= A peepshow with six cards which together form a view, from a harbour mouth towards the sea, with numerous sailing ships, of which at least several seem to be engaged in combat. Given the age and subject, we assume that this item has been produced by the Augsburg firm of M. Engelbrecht. The item is, however, not marked. Very slight rubbing to the edges, otherwise a very good, clean set. Rare.

A Series of Adventures in the Course of a Voyage up the Red-Sea, on the Coasts of Arabia and Egypt; and of a route through the desarts of Thesbais, hither to unknown to the European traveler, in the year MDCCLXXVII in letters to a lady.

London:: Printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall, 1780.. 4to. xv, [1], 400, [2 blank] pp. Half-title, errata, 3 engraved plates (facing pp. 11, 49, 237), and 3 folding engraved maps (facing pp. 69, 291, 355); foxed throughout. Original gilt-stamped calf with black spine label; worn, upper joint reinforced with Kozo. Several ownership ink signatures of Bishop Norton, including on title. Very good. FIRST EDITION. The Critical Review reports regarding Irwin and this work, “The author … seems to be an active and spirited young man, of good sense and understanding, with a tender and benevolent heart, who has performed the disagreeable task allotted him by his masters, the East India Company, with great zeal and intrepidity; met with many hair-breadth scapes, and braved innumerable dangers amongst a set of unlettered, barbarous, and perfidious savages, though dangerous and uncultivated desarts, hitherto unknown to the European traveler.” – The Critical Review, v.49, 1780, ed. Tobias George Smollett, p. 405 [405-412]. ¶ The East India Company servant Eyles Irwin, born in Calcutta in 1751, was appointed to survey the Black Town in 1771 and “was made superintendent of the lands belonging to Madras ... In 1776 he became caught up in the political storm that overtook the governor of Madras, George Pigot, who was placed in confinement by members of his own council. Irwin supported Pigot, and in August he was suspended from the company's service. Early in 1777 he left India in order to seek redress in England. Irwin later published an account of his journey home, which was entitled ‘A series of adventures...' In this he displayed his classical education and described his experiences and observations during the journey, which lasted eleven months ... Irwin returned to India in 1780 as a senior merchant and his route was again overland, but this time via Aleppo, Baghdad, and the Persian Gulf” – ODNB. The author recounts his imprisonment in Yanbu, Arabia, and further voyage to Jeddah, as well as his adventures in Egypt, his journeys through the Peloponnese and Balkans as well as Persia. He includes an “Ode to the Persian Gulf”, which extols the beauties of Bahrain. - In 1802, Irwin produced a musical play, “The Bedouins, or Arabs of the Desert: a Comic Opera in Three Acts,” (1802), which played in Dublin for three nights. ¶ The second edition was also issued in 1780. A third edition, 1782, was expanded with an appendix. ¶ PROVENANCE: Signed “Isabella” and several signatures of “Bishop Norton, 1785”. Under Norton's signature is another notation “my grandfather …” ¶ Blackmer 865; Tobias George Smollett, The Critical review, or, Annals of Literature, Volume 49, 1780, pp. 405-412.
