A good tight copy of a scarce work. A reissue, with its own collective title page of Part 2 of the two-part collection with the same title and the imprint: A Paris & Londres, 1775-80. Part I contained information on the construction and use of sextant and octants and was not reissued. Usually known by the French version of his name, J. H. de Magellan (1723-1790), descended from the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, was a Portuguese scientist whose work focused primarily on scientific instruments. He is credited with introducing English scientific instruments, and the work of Joseph Priestley to the scientific community in France. After travels throughout Europe he settled in England in 1764 to pursue his scientific studies. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of London in 1774 and was also a member of the Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg, and of the Royal Academy of Madrid. As an instrument maker and designer, supplying the governments of Europe, he proposed changes and improvements to astronomical and nautical observation instruments such as the quarters of a circle (English sextants and octants), in the reflection circle, in the sextant and in the pendulum clock. As far as meteorological instruments are concerned, he put forward improvements in barometers, thermometers and presented a meteorographer. As regards physical instruments, worthy of mention are his improvements to Atwood's machines and to the precision scale, very important for the advances of chemistry. In Traite V in our book he deals with astronomic clocks and watches, marine compasses, protection against lightning, and the theodolite. The final Traite is actually an extract from a letter from Magellan to a doctor friend in Paris describing the construction and use of a new inhaler or respirateur invented by a fellow member of the Royal Society, the physician John Mudge, and believed to cure infallibly catarrhal coughs.         A Journal of a Voyage Round the World, in His Majesty's Ship The Dolphin,

[c. 1780] - Commanded by the Honorable Commodore Byron. By a Midshipman on Board the said Ship. 12mo. Contemporary sheep. iv, 5-94pp. London, A. Manson, c. An unsophisticated copy of this rare surreptitious account of Byron?s 1764-66 circumnavigation, which was the fastest on record at the time. This work is usually attributed to Midshipman Charles Clerke, who later served on all three of Cook?s voyages. He spent the final six months of the third voyage in command and contributed to the official account. It records the aspects of the Dolphin?s voyage for which it is famous: namely an encounter with the Patagonian Giants and its claim of the Falkland Islands for Britain. As with other unofficial accounts, it takes part of its vitality from what are surely embellishments, none being more salient than those relating to the Patagonians. While Byron?s official account (first published in Part I of Hawkesworth?sVoyages) describes a relatively short meeting, Clerke?s suggests a longer stay as he comments on numerous facets of Patagonian society, such as education, medicine, taxation and urbanity. Another point of differences the estimation of the height of the natives, which Byron deems to be between 6.6 and 7 feet, while Clerke claims their stature to extend to ?about ten feet? In this respect, the Midshipman?s report is fleshed out according to the body of the myth and would have appealed greatly to the popular imagination back in Europe. While this account appeared in a number of editions, our copy alters from the 1767 edition (believed to be the first) in that it is shorter and is not illustrated. The pagination links it with a 1784 edition, printed for A. Millar & J. Hodges. Any Midshipman edition is rare and this is certainly the case for the book in question, of which there are only 9 in WorldCat (2 of which are in Europe).

Sala del Divan Dove Il G. Vizir Tratta con Pranzo L Ministro Prima d'introdurlo all'udienza del Gran Sigre (The Divan hall in which the Grand Vizier held lunch in the presence of the Sultan).

1780 - Gouache and Watercolour. Signed: Luigi Mayer Rom[ano] Dipinti (Luigi Mayer of Rome painted it). Dimensions without the border: 39 x 55 cm. Dimensions with the border: 44 x 60 cm. The Divan-i Hümayun, in English the Imperial Council, was the de facto cabinet of the Ottoman Empire for most of its history. Initially an informal gathering of the senior ministers presided over by the Sultan in person, in the mid-15th century the Council's composition and function became firmly regulated. The Grand Vizier, who became the Sultan's deputy as the head of government, assumed the role of chairing the Council, which comprised also the other viziers, charged with military and political affairs, the two kadiaskers or military judges, the defterdars in charge of finances, the nisanci in charge of thepalace scribal service, and later the Kapudan Pasha, the head of the Ottoman Navy, and occasionally the beylerbeyi of Rumelia and the Agha of the Janissaries. The Council met in a dedicated building in the second courtyard of the Topkapi Palace, initially daily, then for four days a week by the 16th century. Its remit encompassed all matters of governance of the Empire, although the exact proceedings are no longer known. It was assisted by an extensive secretarial bureaucracy under the reis ül-küttab for the drafting of appropriate documents and the keeping of records. The Imperial Council remained the main executive organ of the Ottoman state until the mid-17th century, after which it lost most of its power to the office of the Grand Vizier. With the Tanzimat reforms of the early 19th century, it was eventually succeeded by a Western-style cabinet government. In the present painting, the figure of the Sultan, listening to the discussions below, can be seen behind the grilled window. On either sides of the window are the framed tughras, the imperial monograms of the Sultan. In the foreground is a servant preparing coffee. In the background there are members of a European commission, possible French diplomats, discussing stately matters with the Ottoman high ranking bureaucrats. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Abhandlungen von den Krankheiten der Künstler und Handwerker neu bearbeitet und vermehret von Dr. Johann Christian Gottlieb Ackermann. 2 in 1 Bd.

Stendal, bey D.E. Franzen und J.C. Grosse, 1780-1783, 8, (15 Bl.), 311 (12), 326, (22) pp., 2 gest. An seinem 81. Ramazzini was the first to deal adequately with occupational diseases. His book was the first systematic treatise on the subject. By Koelsch he was called the "father of industrial hygiene." Ramazzini was professor of Modena (1682-1700) and at Padua until his death in 1714. Among his more astute observations are his accounts of the phtisis acquired by stonemassons and miners, the eye problems of printers and gilders, the sciatia of tailors, and the lethargy of potters, etc. Ramazzini discusses the diseases of over fifty occupations including wrestlers, farmers, nurses, soldiers, and many others. Ramazzinis work has a dual signifcance. It is sythesis of all knowledge on occupational diseases from the eartliest times to the eighteenth century, and at the same time ist is a basis for further investigation.cf. Rare First German Edition of John Hunter's "A natural history of the human teeth. With: A practical treatise on the diseases of the teeth" and " A practical treatise on the diseases of the teeth intended as a supplement to the natural history of those parts" forms the foundation of all modern anatomical texts on the anatomy of the jaws and teeth up to the present time". PrinzJohn Hunter's (1728-1793) "Natural history of the human teeth" "is a detailed study of the mouth, jaws and teeth with exceptionally accurate plates. Hunter correctly understood the growth and development of the jaws and their relation to the muscles of mastication. He coined the terms cuspids, bicuspids, molars and incisors. "His "practical treatise on the diseases of the teeth" and " The natural history" revolutionized the practice of dentistry and provided the basis for later dental research. Hunter devised appliances for the correction of malocclusion. He described the various stages of the inflammation of affected teeth, and gave an accurate description of periodontal disease. He included instruction with regard to the operation of tooth transplantation from one living person directly to the jaw of another", he was the first to study the teeth in a scientific manner, and the first to recommend complete removal of the pulp in filling them, and he also devised appliances for the correction of malocclusion Hunter, devoted three chapters of the regulation of teeth, he was the first to dwell at length on the ideal occlusion.Hermann Prinz, Dental Chronology, pp.72-73 Hoffmann-Axthelm, Hist.         Manuscript map of China.

China, ca 1780. - Manuscript map of 81 x 80 cm on mulberry paper, entirely in contemporary hand colour, folded between its original blue paper covers and preserved in a black modern leather protective case. Text in classical Chinese. Scale: ca 1:8,500,000. Superb, unique manuscript map of China executed towards 1780, under the powerful Qing dynasty, showing the whole extent of the Empire at the height of its power. No bibliography appears to mention our map, which is likely unique and is not known to have been published. It presents a major historical interest because it was drawn during the golden age of the Chinese civilization, when the borders of the Empire were more far-flung than ever. In fact, the reigns of Yonghzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong are considered the zenith of power of the Qing Empire, which spread out over more than 13 million square kilometres - a size unmatched in Chinese history before or after. - Qianlong (1711-99), the fourth emperor of the Qing dynasty, reigned over China from October 18th, 1735 until February 9th, 1796. His reign is considered the golden age of Chinese civilization, the height of the Qing Dynasty. The Emperor, an ambitious statesman conscious of his duty, expanded the borders of the Chinese Empire towards central Asia. A poet, accomplished painter and master of calligraphy, he promoted the development of Chinese culture across the empire and gathered one of the most important collections of art in the world. He founded the library of the four treasures, Siku Quanshu, so as to establish the largest collection of books in the history of China. This was a period of great territorial expansion and interior stability: under Qianlong, the Chinese Empire grew considerably, particularly in central Asia. Chinese Turkestan was incorporated into the Empire and renamed Xinjiang, while in the west, the valley of Ili was conquered. The present map is filled with geographical and historical details magnificently hand-written in classical Chinese. The legend indicates the distances from Nagasaki and gives multiple details about each and every Chinese province and the neighbouring countries. It also provides information about the population of the neighbouring countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Java. The artist uses several colours to distinguish the various provinces of China as well as the neighbouring countries. Some elements depicted on the map are of particular interest, such as the clearly delineated Great Wall, from north-east to north-west, and the Gobi Desert, in the north and north-east of the map. Also, the illustration of the mouth of the great Yellow River is noteworthy. This river, the cradle of the Chinese civilization, has been known for changing its course since antiquity. Today, it runs to the Bohai Sea in the north of the Shandong province. On the present map, however, as on other contemporary maps, the mouth of the river is located in the south of the Jiangsu province. Other features shown include the Dongting Lake, in the Hunan province, the most important source of water in China; the sacred mountain of Taoism, Dong Yue Dai Shan, which all Chinese hope to climb one day; Korea and the Yalu River, the border between China and Korea; Japan and the sea of Japan in the north-east; Taiwan; Mongolia in the north; in the south-west, Vietnam, Malaysia, Java, the Philippines. - A red stamp of a previous owner in Chinese characters in the lower right corner of the map. The map has a high degree of precision, as 1 cm represents 100 Li (approximately 85 km). A superb and unique manuscript hand-coloured map of China, in perfect condition, revealing the extent of the Chinese Empire in the mid-18th century. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1780. Incisione in rame, mm 300x425.

A Collection of the Most Approved Entertaining Stories, Calculated for the Instructions and Amusement of all the little Masters and Misses in the vast Empire. By Solomon Winlove, Esq. A New Edition. London, Printed for E. Newbery, by J. Cundee, n.d. [1780].

      - Paper covered boards with a delicate flower pattern. Slight damage at the lower part of the spine. The contents are in good shape. 7,5 x 11,5 cm, [6] 1-121 [3, cat. of little books published by E. Newbery] pp. Engraved title page of the story 'The Knights' and six woodcuts throughout the text. This rare 'new' edition contains seventeen stories that differ from fables to fairy tales. The first and second edition of this book were published in 1770. The stories are rewritten and brought together by Solomon Winlove. It is thought that Winlove is a pseudonym used by the Irish scholar and author Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774). Goldsmith is better known as the writer of the novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766) and the poem The Deserted Village (1771). As Winlove, the author mainly focussed on moral and instructional stories, for example in his version of the Holy Bible for children (1772) or The pleasing moralist (1798) . The 'new' edition of this beautifully written and composed book is very rare. B2363
