        The Bible in Miniuture [sic]…

London: E[lizabeth] Newbery 1780 First miniature or thumb Bible published by the firm of Newbery. This copy is the variant with the first state of the engraved title and no imprint at the foot of page 256. Original red morocco, ornately gilt, with a central onlay of the sacred monogram on both covers. Marbled endpapers. 32mo. Complete with the two engraved titles and fourteen engraved plates. Some light text soiling. Contemporary ownership signature of an Amelia Renton on a preliminary blank. A remarkable fine copy of this important thumb Bible. John Newbery (1713-1767), called "The Father of Children's Literature," is known as the English publisher who first made children's literature a profitable literary market. The Newbery Medal was named in his honor. He was known for his small-format books that fit a child's hand and for his moral themes that sought to show the child that he could rise in life by being of good character. Upon Newbery's death, his firm was continued by his son Francis, his nephew Francis, and his nephew's wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth, who ultimately published 310 juveniles and 210 books of other sorts, was the first Newbery to publish a thumb Bible—that is a paraphrased or abridge Bible, printed in miniature and decorated with pictures, for the use of children.

Stockholm, Cederholm, Kongl.

Early annotation to front endleaf, light foxing in a few places, interior otherwise fresh. Ex-library. Small inkstamps to title page and a few text leaves. One of the very first books to draw on the Commentaries, Laws Concerning the Election is a landmark in the history of its reception by the English bar. It is also a remarkably thorough work that considers causes determined by parliamentary committee and the House of Commons and the laws of England, Scotland and Wales from 1382 to 1780. Some reference attribute this work to William Bohun. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:151 (21).

        [Triumph of Britannia]

circa 1780. Engraving. Unfinished working proof. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on all sides. Some creases in image. Image size: 15 1/8 x 20 ½ inches. 15 ¾ x 20 ¾ inches. An extremely rare working proof of James Fittler's striking engraving of Britannia. James Fittler was a skilled etcher and engraver, who established a reputation as an exceptional marine engraver. His oeuvre included portraits and book illustrations but he was best known for his appealing marine scenes. Trained at the Royal Academy schools, Fittler became an associate in 1800. He was a regular exhibitor at the Academy and was appointed "Marine Engraver" to George III. This stunning image of Britannia is an excellent example of his skill and a fascinating glimpse of the etching process. This intriguing print shows a unique step in the printmaking process before an image is ready for publication. Before the image is completed the engraver has printed a trial impression to view this stage of the engraved plate. It is incredibly rare to find prints in this unfinished experimental stage. Impressions which were pulled as working proofs are unique and were almost never duplicated Dictionary of National Biography; Benezit, Dictionnaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, Vol. 5, p. 492.

// FIRST EDITION, containing Messier's initial catalogue of 45 objects: "the most celebrated nebulae and clusters, including M1, the Crab Nebula; M13, the globular star cluster in Hercules; and M31, the Andromeda Galaxy" (DSB). First published in 1771, but with an additional 23 new objects observed by Messier since its publication. Most interested in comets, Messier is attributed with the initial discovery of twelve or thirteen from the appearance of Comet 1759 III to Comet 1798 I and three additional independent discoveries. His famous catalogue of objects which retain his M for Messier numbers to this day came about only because "the nebula I discovered above the southern horn of Taurus on September 12, 1758, while observing the comet that year... had such a resemblance to a comet, in its form and brightness, that I endeavoured to find others, so that astronomers would not confuse these same nebulae with comets just beginning to shine" (Messier Connaissance des Temps 1800/1801 recorded in DSB). // Photos available upon request.

Travels into several Remote Nations of the World

London: Joseph Wenman,, 1780. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver. 3 volumes in one, small duodecimo (119 × 72 mm). Contemporary trade sheep binding, rebacked with original spine laid down, red morocco label, single gilt rules to spine. With engraved frontispiece in each volume, preliminary advert leaves for Wenman's Entertaining Museum in vols. 2 and 3. Ownership inscription of Julia Bordier dated 1787 on the first title. Some light marks and wear, but a very good copy. Later reprint of the text, but its first appearance in this format, demonstrating its acceptance as an "approved" book, and in this small format suggesting that Gulliver's Travels had already achieved its status as a fable for children. Although divided into three volumes, the text consists of the original four parts, not the spurious Volume III first published in 1727. ESTC lists only the McMaster copy of this edition, noting preliminary advert leaves for Wenman's Entertaining Museum in vols. 1 and 2; our copy has these leaves only in vols. 2 and 3.

STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY. THE HONORABLE HENRY GARDNER, ESQ....TO THE SELECTMEN OR ASSESSORS OF THE TOWNE OF...AN ACT FOR APPORTIONING AND ASSESSING A TAX OF FIVE MILLION SIX HUNDRED AND ONE THOUSAND AND TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS SIX SHILLINGS AND SEVEN PENCE [

[Boston]. May 18, 1780.. Broadside, 13 x 16 inches, completed in manuscript and signed by Gardner in lower margin. Minor soiling and splits along some fold lines, spotting and old repair in left margin, faint dampstain toward right edge. Additional manuscript text visible on verso, though illegible. Good. Expertly matted, and protected with mylar sheet. A scarce tax warrant blank form, here issued to the town of Newcastle, by Henry Gardner as treasurer of Massachusetts. 1780 was a difficult year in the financial history of the American Revolution. In May of that year two Connecticut regiments mutinied over lack of pay, while in October the value of Continental currency sank to 1/177th of its face value. Growing desperate for additional funds and supplies, the several states did what all governments do in similar straits: they raised taxes. This broadside grants sweeping authority to local Massachusetts governments to tax a variety of real estate transactions and property. Bereft of reliable demographic data, the act also calls for an accurate list of inhabitants and their "rateable estates." The effort was likely a failure. The tremendous population fluxes during the Revolution due to war death and Loyalist desertion made the statistical enumeration of inhabitants nearly impossible. At least four similar warrants were issued by Gardner throughout the year. Fittingly, Gardner was one of the first officials of the new government to draw his salary entirely from public revenue. Extremely rare. Bristol locates only one copy, at the Library of Congress. BRISTOL 5128. NAIP w018365. MASSACHUSETTS BROADSIDES 2260-2263 (ref). APPLETON'S CYCLOPÆDIA II, p.598.         A CHART OF THE BAY AND HARBOUR OF PENSACOLA IN THE PROVINCE OF WEST FLORIDA SURVEYED BY GEORGE GAULD A.M

London: J.F.W. Des Barres in the ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, August 1st, 1780.. Copper-engraved sea chart with aquatint, and details heightened in original color. Sheet size: 21 3/16 x 31 5/16 inches. Very good. A very rare and highly important sea chart of Pensacola Harbor and northwestern Florida from THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, the finest marine atlas of North America's east coast, produced during the Revolutionary War. This superbly drafted map features the magnificent natural harbor of Pensacola on the Florida panhandle. Des Barres based this rendering on manuscript survey maps by the British military engineer George Gauld. The town, with its fort and carefully laid out streets is featured in the left-centre of the map. Another settlement "Campbell Town" is located further up the harbor toward the entrance of the "Scambia" (Escambia) River. The borders of various land grants are demarcated, and the countryside is elegantly detailed with aquatint features, and colored in a light brown-green wash. The chart precisely captures the features of the coast, showing how the harbor is protected by two sandy bars of land, the outer being Santa Rosa Island. The chart features a great deal of quantitative hydrographic information, and instructions to mariners are written in the lower right of the map, ensuring that it was by far the most accurate and comprehensive pilot for the harbor produced in the 18th century. The present example is the second of two variants of this chart distinguished by the heightening of the townscapes in a brilliant red hue of original color. It is important to note that the very year that this map was printed the region was caught up in the dramatic action of the Revolutionary War. The Spaniards, who had just joined the war on the American side, seized the British garrison at Fort Barrancas, and West Florida remained in their possession for the duration of the war. Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres was born in Switzerland, where his Huguenot ancestors had fled following the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. He studied under the great mathematician, Daniel Bernoulli, at the University of Basel, before immigrating to Britain where he trained at the Royal Military College, Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the legendary future explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. With these extremely accurate surveys in hand, Des Barres returned to London in 1774, where the Royal Navy charged him with the Herculean task of producing the atlas. He was gradually forwarded the manuscripts of numerous advanced surveys conducted by British cartographers in the American Colonies, Jamaica, and Cuba. The result was THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, which became the most celebrated sea atlas of its era, containing the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America. Des Barres' synergy of great empirical accuracy with the peerless artistic virtue of his aquatint views, created a work that "has been described as the most splendid collection of charts, plates and views ever published" (NMM). THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE eventually consisted of four volumes and Des Barres' dedication to the project was so strong that often at his own expense he continually updated and added new charts and views to various editions up until 1784, producing over 250 charts and views, many appearing in several variations. All of these charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, such that in many cases they remained the most authoritative maps of the regions covered for several decades. Following the completion of THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, Des Barres returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, living to the advanced age of 103. The Neptune eventually consisted of four volumes and Des Barres's dedication to the project was so strong that often at his own expense he continually updated and added new charts and views to various editions up until 1784, producing over 250 charts and views, many appearing in several variations. All of these charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, such that in many cases they remained the most authoritative maps of the regions covered for several decades. Following the completion of The Neptune, Des Barres returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, living to the advanced age of 103.         Philosophia Botanica in qua explicantur Fundamenta Botanica cum Definitionibus Partium, exemplis Terminorum, Observationibus rariorum

...Editio Secunda in gratiam Botanophilorum revisa et emendata. Curante D. Johanne Gottlieb Gleditsch. Engraved frontis. port. of Linnaeus & 11 folding engraved plates. 4 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 362 pp. 8vo, cont. boards (minor foxing). Berlin: F. Himburg, 1780. "Editio Secunda" (1st ed.: 1751). This work is essentially an elaboration of the Fundamenta Botanica. Our edition is the first to be revised and corrected. The editor was Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch (1714-86), director of the botanic garden at Berlin, and friend and correspondent of Linnaeus. Gleditsch did important experiments on the sexuality of plants (see Sachs, History of Botany, pp. 393-94). Linnaeus "dictated with inexorable logic in Philosophia botanica how botanists should proceed in practice...[he] considered the Philosophia botanica to be a statute book spelling out the terminology and concepts to be used by botanists. Logic and definitions of concepts were the true tools of botany."-D.S.B., VIII, pp. 377-78. Very fine copy and scarce. ❧ Pritzel 5426. Soulsby 445. Stafleu & Cowan 4760.7. Stearn 92. .

LES ANTIQUITÉS D'HERCULANUM AVEC LEURS EXPLICATIONS EN FRANÇOIS

Paris: Chez David, 1780-1781.. Six volumes, being volumes I, II, IIII, V, VI, and VII (without volume III and volume VIII). With hundreds of illustrations. Contemporary mottled French calf, neatly rebacked in matching style, gilt extra, with gilt leather spine labels. A bit of light scattered foxing, but generally quite clean internally. A handsome set. An absolutely phenomenal association copy of this influential study of the antiquities of the Italian city of Herculaneum, destroyed during an explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. This set of LES ANTIQUITÉS D'HERCULANUM... was given by Thomas Jefferson to his young protege, the painter John Trumbull. Jefferson has inscribed it on the front fly leaf of the first volume, "Th. J. begs Mr. Trumbull will do him the favor to accept this copy of the Herculaneum." Jefferson was instrumental in furthering Trumbull's career at an early stage, and in encouraging him to create his painting of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence. That painting is one of Trumbull's most important and iconic works, and in placing Jefferson at the center of that scene Trumbull helped to cement the Jefferson image in the American mind. Jefferson and Trumbull first met in London in early 1786, when Trumbull was thirty and Jefferson thirteen years his elder. At the time, Trumbull was studying painting under Benjamin West, but was planning to visit Paris to study the artworks available there. Jefferson invited Trumbull to stay with him at his Paris residence, the Hotel de Langeac, and the two quickly became close. In fact, Trumbull joined William S. Smith and Jefferson's secretary, William Short, in the small group of people that Jefferson asked to perform tasks or "commissions" for him. Trumbull lived with Jefferson for five or six weeks at the Hotel de Langeac, and Jefferson encouraged Trumbull in his early historical paintings. Trumbull had brought with him to Paris two of his recent historical paintings, "Death of General Warren at Bunker's Hill" and "Death of General Montgomery at Quebec," which he wanted to arrange to be engraved. It was almost certainly at Jefferson's suggestion and encouragement that Trumbull added the Declaration of Independence to his series of American historical paintings. With Jefferson's assistance and recollection of the event, Trumbull began his painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was Trumbull's placing of Jefferson at the center of his painting, flanked by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, that helped cement the centrality of Jefferson's role as author of the Declaration in the public consciousness. Merrill Peterson asserts that "In the panegyrics of the Fourth of July...the popularity of Trumbull's masterpiece of historical portraiture, 'The Signing of the Declaration' - Jefferson's authorship of the American birthright was his certain title to immortality." Jefferson espoused Trumbull's talents, and introduced him to important people in Paris, and Trumbull repaid the favor in consequential ways. Jefferson's biographer Dumas Malone writes that "Jefferson was on the most intimate terms with Trumbull until the very end of his stay in France, and he always associated him in memory with what he called 'our charming coterie in Paris.'" That coterie included Maria Cosway, the beautiful and vivacious young wife of the English portraitist, Richard Cosway. Trumbull had already met the Cosways, and introduced them to Jefferson in Paris in August, 1786 at the Halle aux Bleds marketplace. The widowed Jefferson became enraptured with Maria Cosway, and spent a great deal of time with her between August and October, 1786. Trumbull was often with the pair, touring art galleries, attending concerts, walking around Paris and journeying into the countryside. On October 12, 1786, on the occasion of the Cosways return to England, Jefferson wrote Maria Cosway an anguished letter in which he related a debate between "my head and my heart." It was to Trumbull that Jefferson entrusted the delivery of this confidential and revealing letter. Trumbull was also an intermediary for Jefferson's friendship with Angelica Schuyler Church, Alexander Hamilton's sister-in-law. Mrs. Church and Maria Cosway were good friends, referring to each other as "sisters." Jefferson, in fact, helped Mrs. Church secure a volume of the HERCULANUM in September, 1788 (see Jefferson letter of September 21, 1788, in PAPERS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON, vol. 13, pp.623- 624). It is possible the gift of this set to Trumbull took place at the same time. The friendship between Jefferson and Trumbull continued after Trumbull left Paris for London and the United States. In 1788, Jefferson commissioned from Trumbull a canvas containing lifesize busts of Francis Bacon, John Locke, and Isaac Newton, who Jefferson considered as "the three greatest men that have ever lived." Also in 1788, Trumbull painted a portrait of Jefferson, and would later make copies of that portrait for Maria Cosway, Angelica Church, and Jefferson's eldest daughter, Martha. In 1789, anticipating that William Short was about to move on to other endeavors, Jefferson offered John Trumbull the position of his personal secretary, and offer that Trumbull declined. Some time after that Jefferson recommended Trumbull for the position of American Minister to the Barbary states, a post that Trumbull also declined. In 1793, Jefferson and Trumbull (a Federalist and a New England Congregationalist), had a falling out over questions of politics and religious faith, issues that came to a head at a dinner Jefferson hosted that also included the Virginia politician William Branch Giles. Trumbull and Giles already had bad blood between them, and when Jefferson seemingly took Giles's side Trumbull recalled that "from this time my acquaintance with Mr. Jefferson became cold and distant." Jefferson's gift to Trumbull of this set of Maréchal's ANTIQUITÉS D'HERCULANUM is significant on several levels. Excavations at Herculaneum, destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., had begun in 1738. The publication of illustrated books such as Maréchal's, showing the antiquities preserved and discovered at Herculaneum, had an important effect on the growing popularity of Neoclassical styles and themes in contemporary European and American art. Jefferson himself owned a set of Maréchal's work (although it was not among the works sold to the Library of Congress; it appears in the 1828 sale catalogue of his retained library) , and he not only gave this set to Trumbull but ordered a set for the library at the University of Virginia as well. And as mentioned, Jefferson also assisted in securing a volume of the set for Angelica Church in 1788. Jefferson himself was very influenced by classical styles, as evidenced in his architectural designs for Monticello and the University of Virginia. John Trumbull was also greatly influenced by classical art, and was a central figure in the Neoclassical revival in America. This work would have been very important in the development of his artistic style. The first five volumes in Maréchal's work (i.e. volumes I, II, IIII, and V in the present set) are devoted to painting, and volumes VI and VII are concerned with bronzes. An outstanding association copy, uniting Thomas Jefferson with one of his most talented proteges, John Trumbull, whose painting of Jefferson presenting the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 did so much to establish Jefferson in the pantheon of America's Founding Fathers.
