The State of the Prisons in England and Wales

London,: William Eyres for Cadell and Conant, 1780.. Octavo, with eleven folding engraved plates including seven highly detailed architectural plans; occasional inoffensive offsetting, some water-staining to the margins of the text and affecting the plates, but overall a good copy in contemporary tree calf, spine panelled in gilt between raised bands, some wear to joints and extremities. Second and best edition of John Howard's exhaustive and highly influential examination of the prisons of Britain and Europe, considerably enlarged from the first edition of 1777 and with an additional seven engraved folding plates. Howard's criticism of British gaols was contemporary with recent discoveries in the Pacific, marking the work out as one of the fundamental works in the debate that would culminate in the establishment of the penal colony at Botany Bay.Howard's study is a landmark in the history of criminology. Like his successor Jeremy Bentham, Howard took great interest in the architecture of prisons and demonstrated that an improvement of the penal environment could promote rehabilitation. This second edition features eleven folding plates of which seven are detailed plans of existing prisons including Newgate and the Bastille. In 1773 Howard accepted the office of high sheriff of Bedford and was appalled by the conditions in the local gaol. As a result, he began an exhaustive examination of British gaols and in 1774 gave evidence to a parliamentary committee which legislated for gaolers to be paid a fixed salary to minimise their extorting money from prisoners, while all those detained without charge were immediately released. Howard continued to agitate for better food and medical care and launched a systematic inspection of British and continental gaols. The State of Prisons is a rich source of statistical data and detailed description alike. Interestingly, this second edition expands upon the condition of the Thames hulks based on a series of visits made in 1779. Howard reports that the pursers' weights were doctored for personal gain and that new rations of cloth and bedding had been issued specifically for his visits to the Justicia and her sister hulk the Censor. He reports horrific mortality rates on the hulk Justicia: between August 1776 and March 1778 a staggering 176 of the 632 prisoners had died. The appalling conditions and vice on the hulks led to their widespread condemnation and calls for transportation as a preferable state of affairs.Tragically, Howard died in the Crimea in 1790 from the very prison fever he sought to eradicate. He draws comparisons between the elimination of scurvy at sea and maintaining the health of prisoners and refers to the scholarship of Sir John Pringle and James Lind, both eminent contemporary physicians of the scurvy problem.Garrison & Morton, 1598; Goldsmiths', 12059; HBS, 7975; Printing and the Mind of Man, 224; Rothschild, 1163-1164.

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED "D. CLAUS," FROM DANIEL CLAUS TO CAPT. MATHEWS, REPORTING ON INDIAN CAPTIVES DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION]

Montreal. March 23, 1780.. [2]pp. written on folio sheet. Old folds. Four small pin holes. Very good. Accompanied by a typed transcription. Daniel Claus (1727-87) came to North America from Germany in 1749 and settled for a time in Philadelphia. Almost immediately upon his arrival he became interested in the various languages of the tribes of the Six Nations. He worked under William Johnson, and in 1760 was based in Montreal, becoming deputy agent to the Canadian Indians and reporting to both Johnson and the local military government. By the mid-1760s he had married and had acquired considerable land in the vicinity of Albany, New York. His life changed, both administratively and personally, when in 1774, Sir William Johnson died suddenly, and Sir Guy Carleton replaced Claus with John Campbell. Shortly thereafter, with the outbreak of the American Revolution and the subsequent defeat of Burgoyne at Saratoga, the Loyalist cause in the upper Hudson valley was lost, and Claus and his family fled to Canada, leaving behind their lands and their possessions. In 1778, Frederick Haldimand, Carleton's successor, appointed Claus deputy agent of the Six Nations in Canada, with special emphasis on the Mohawks. In this hurriedly written letter (probably the original draft of the letter, containing many manuscript corrections), which pertains to one Peter Hansen, "active in ye Rebellion," whom the Indians had taken for the British "for intelligence," Claus also mentions in an afterthought: "The Mohawk Village here is somewhat sickly within this short time."

Fragmente uber Capitain Cooks letze Reise und sein Ende

Gottingen,: bei Johann Christian Dieterich, 1780.. 6 parts (St¸cke) bound in two volumes, small octavo, with 10 plates (including 5 folding plates: one on blue paper and one folding sheet of music); a fine set in later blue marbled boards, black labels, a little chipped at extremities. First edition: the entire first series of this very important journal which, among many firsts, includes Georg Forster's important report on Captain Cook, 'the earliest authentic and substantial information concerning Cook's Third Voyage, his discovery of Hawaii, and his death at Kealakekua...' (Forbes). Forster co-edited the G?ttingisches Magazin with the Anglophile scholar Lichtenberg, whose own biography of Cook, subsequently published as a separate work, appears here. The importance of this volume to Cook's third voyage is remarkable, including as it does three important biographical studies and an important engraved portrait, as well as the first scientific notice of the natural history of Hawaii (Georg Forster's "Beschreibung des rothen Baumlaufers von der Insul O-Waihi" (pp. 346-51), an ornithological treatise which Forbes notes as 'the earliest scientific notice on any aspect of the natural history of Hawaii'). The set also includes both parts of Georg Forster's extremely early account of Tahiti, in part based on the Spanish voyages to Tahiti in the 1770s, and the most significant of the bare handful of contemporary reports to take notice of the voyages of Don Juan de Langara y Huarte and Don Domingo Buenechea, commanders of two of the three Spanish voyages to the region in the 1770s.The portrait of Cook is after the Dance portrait (first published in 1779) and newly engraved by D. Berger. This is one of the earliest portraits of Cook ever issued: it was preceded, of course, by the Dance/Sherwin original, and by an inferior portrait issued with the Westminster Magazine for January 1780 (known to us because Johann Forster here complains to readers of the G?ttingisches Magazin that it was a poor likeness at best). The most significant inclusion is Georg Forster's "fragment" on the life of Cook, the first serious biography ever attempted and the only significant biographical document attempted by one of his fellow voyagers. Prior to Forster's attempt, there had really only been brief newspaper and journal reports, most if not all of which openly plagiarised from each other (even Lichtenberg's effort in one of the earlier issues here is evidently cobbled together from newspaper accounts). Forster's account is a very different proposition. It appeared before the two earliest separately published firsthand narratives of the voyage, those by Rickman and Zimmermann; indeed Zimmermann's book, apparently written at Forster's suggestion, draws upon the Fragmente. That the publication dates from after the return of the Resolution and Discovery in September 1780 is shown by the fact that Forster names Zimmermann and Barthel Lohmann as the two members of the expedition whom he had personally interviewed. As well as reports from these actual participants in the voyage, Forster, who sailed as a naturalist on the second voyage, benefited from his own knowledge of Cook and the Pacific in compiling the Fragmente. After Forster's return to Germany following his involvement in Cook's second voyage, he had continued to take a close interest in Pacific exploration, editing and translating a number of German texts on the subject. He enjoyed a considerable reputation in scholarly circles, and his standing is high today as 'the only man to travel with Cook who embraced the whole critical program of the Enlightenment, and probably the most intelligent and farsighted of them all' (Bernard Smith, in Fisher & Johnston, p. 183).The remaining issues of the G?ttingisches Magazin contain a mass of articles of literary, philosophical, musical and scientific interest. Each annual issue contains six parts. Publication lapsed in 1784, but resumed briefly in 1785 when a fourth issue containing just two parts appeared.Although this is a very important source, it is not recorded by Beaglehole, Beddie or Holmes, though the latter makes a passing reference to it, ignoring the Forster essay, in a note about Lichtenberg's life of Cook (44n). As O'Reilly and Reitman point out, given that Forster conducted serious interviews of two men on the voyage, and managed to piece together an authentic narrative of the voyage and the circumstances of Cook's death, it is surprising that this important account does not figure in any bibliography of Cook.Forbes, 'Hawaiian National Bibliography', 13; Goedeke, VI, 246 14; Kroepelien, 736; O'Reilly-Reitman, 413, 450, 512.

He saw virtually every major canal, including the Bridgewater, Trent & Mersey, Leeds & Liverpool, Oxford, Staffordshire & Worcestershire, and Coventry as well as the Thames navigation. The book was compiled from the notes he made and describes locks (the Bingley five rise), aqueducts (Barton), weirs (Brindley's circular weirs on the Staffs & Worcs), feeders (the terminal basin on the Bridgewater at Castlefields, tunnels (at Fenny Compton), sluices (on the Witham at Boston) etc, all charmingly illustrated from his drawings. In order to broaden the scope of the work, Hogrewe included a survey of canals in Europe, China, Russia and the ancient world drawn from several authorities, notably Belidor.       in Pisa, per Francesco Pieraccini, 1780.2 volumi in-4° grande (330x230mm), pp. XXXI, 572, (4) con errata finale; (4), 660, (4) con errata finale; cartonatura coeva bicroma marmorizzata con dorso imitante la pergamena adorno di tassello bicromo con titolo, tomaison e decori impressi in oro. Freschissimo esemplare a pieni margini e in barbe, impresso su carta forte. Una delle prime edizioni italiane, splendidamente impressa, di una delle più cospicue opere storiografiche del Robertson, la "History of the Discovery and Settlement of America" (1777), forse il più importante studio settecentesco sulle vicende storiche del Centro e del Sud America. "Its vivid descriptions and philosophical disquisitions on aboriginal society captivated the literary world, while the outbreak of the American war lent the book pertinent public interest and rendered it more popular than either of its predecessors. Keats, who read it with enthusiasm many years after, owed to it the suggestion of his famous simile of 'Cortez and his men'" (Dictionary of National Biography). L'opera, fondata su un giudizio sostanzialmente positivo in merito alla colonizzazione spagnola dell'America Centrale e Meridionale, fu elogiata al suo apparire dalla Edinburgh Review come "abounding in the finest descriptions, the most pleasing delineations of character, the most dignified and judicious mixture of reflections. the full flow of his narration. will render his works immortal in the hands of the bulk of mankind". Un giudizio entusiastico fu espresso anche da Walpole, sorpreso che un uomo come Robertson avesse potuto comporre "what all the world now allows to be the best modern history" e potesse scrivere "in the purest English and with as much seeming knowledge of men and courts as if he had passed all his life in important embassies." The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V", "Historical Disquisition concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India", "View of the Progress of the Society in Europe from the Subversion of Roman Empire to the beginning of the sixteenth Century".         Britannicae Insulae in quibus Albion seu Britannia Major, et Ivernia seu Britannia Minor?" Venezia: Francesco Santini, a Santa Giustina a Venezia; Paolo Remondini, 1780

VENEZIA: FRANCESCO SANTINI, A SANTA GIUSTINA A VENEZIA; PAOLO REMONDINI, 1780 1780 Incisione su rame all'acquaforte e bulino in due fogli incollati di mm 556 x 485. Bella vergata veneziana. Filigrana AV e stelle. Foglio a larghi margini. Titolo entro ricco cartiglio in alto a sinistra. Robert (Jean) Janvier: working in Paris in the second half of the eighteenth century, Jean Janvier (1746 ? 1776) produced a series of maps in the later half of the century. While there is some confusion about his Christian name, his maps usually were inscribed ?Le Sieur Janvier?. He is best known for his collaboration with engraver Jean Lattre for an Atlas Moderne first released in 1762 and in several later editions some by C. F. Delamarche and by Chez Remondini. He also produced several maps used in general atlases by William Fadan and P. Santini.

Bibliografia: Tooley, The Mapping of America 104. Dimensioni 650x470. An Italian edition of Joseph Nicolas De L?Isle's important map of the north Pacific. De L?Isle spent many years working as a cartographer in Russia, founding the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and producing the first Russian Atlas. In 1747, De L?Isle returned to France with a manuscript map of the north Pacific, including information on northeastern Asia, northwestern America and the strait between the two. He produced an engraved map, which was presented to the French Academy of Sciences in 1750. This map was very advanced in some areas, being based on Russian expeditions of 1723, 1732 and 1741, along with Vitus Bering's first and second voyages and the explorations of a number of others such as Tchirkow and Frondat. Unfortunately, the cartography of northwestern America is based on the fictitious account of Admiral de Fonte, showing a huge inland sea, the "Mer de L'Ouest," and waterways leading off towards Baffin's Bay-the long sought for Northwest Passage. Delisle's rendering became the standard for the region until Cook's explorations later in the century. Delisle's map was copied by many publishers, including the Italian Santini, whose map was later issued by Remondini. The Italian versions have a handsome rococo title cartouche balanced by text and images of a native of Kamchatka and one of Louisiana. Copper engraving, contemporary outline colour, in excellent condition. Venezia Venice Tooley, The Mapping of America 104. Dimensioni 650x470.

Folio (333 x 225mm). With 1 colour-printed frontispiece and 602 colour-printed engraved plates, 4 engraved plates (2 plates of 'Observations microscopiques' of which 1 coloured and 2 plates 'Tableaux des Genres'), and 11 (of 12) engraved tables 'années 1-12'. Folio. pp. viii, 242, 10 (9 colour-printed) engraved plates. Bound in 7 uniform contemporary red half morocco bindings, spines with gilt lines and lettering. A very fine and attractively bound copy. As usual it does not contain the second volume of the text of the 'Histoire des Champignons de la France'. The second part of this volume was published posthumously by Ventenant in 1812 and was destroyed by fire soon after printing and is found in only a few copies. The present work is one of the most interesting colour-printed natural history works. The fine delicate plates are of a great scientific exactness, all by Bulliard who drew, engraved, and printed the plates himself. The colour-printing without retouching by hand, is in the Le Blon-Gauthier method, using a separate plate for each colour. A technique rarely employed for botanical books. "Bulliard was his own printer. He mixed colored inks with great delicacy and, in general, accuracy, and inked his tint plates with minute attention to detail. Some of his tintings seems to have relied on the additional effect of a rich ink tone to give greater local 'solidity'. The three tint plates were overprinted on the 'key' plate with hair's-breadth accuracy, and evidence of his method of obtaining such precise positioning, or register, can be seen in pin holes at upper right and lower left corners of the line frame. The final effect is delicate, pleasing and botanically accurate, and the whole collection has a unique quietly individual flavor. The degree of craftmanship necessary to create these prints is only apparent when one studies them in close detail' (Printing in the service of Botany, 39). The 'Herbier de la France' is composed as follows: Herbier de la France. Première division: Histoire des plantes vénéneuses et suspectes de la France. Paris 1784. pp. (4), x, 177, (1). Herbier de la France seconde division: Histoire des champignons de France, Tome premier. Paris 1791. pp. (2), xvi, 368, ix. Our copy contains plates 601 and 602, missing in most copies. Pritzel mentions 600 as a total and says: 'les planches 601 et 602 manquent habituellement' and according to Dr W. Junk they might have been destroyed during the revolution. Raspail in 1840 republished these 2 plates, plate 602 is in the later Raspail issue. Our copy does not have the engraved 'table année 11', which is an index to plates 481-528. Of the 602 plates 384 show fungi. 3 plates with some waterstaining at the upper margin. Provenance: Bookplate of Dr. Jean Mennerat, the greatest French chess collector of our age. Blind pressed stamp of Librairie Lechevalier, Paris. Great Flower Books, p. 52; Nissen BBI, 296; Dunthorne 70; Stafleu & Cowan 905-912; Junk, Rara p. 176; Volbracht 300.

John Newbery (1713-1767), called "The Father of Children's Literature," is known as the English publisher who first made children's literature a profitable literary market. The Newbery Medal was named in his honor. He was known for his small-format books that fit a child's hand and for his moral themes that sought to show the child that he could rise in life by being of good character. Upon Newbery's death, his firm was continued by his son Francis, his nephew Francis, and his nephew's wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth, who ultimately published 310 juveniles and 210 books of other sorts, was the first Newbery to publish a thumb Bible—that is a paraphrased or abridge Bible, printed in miniature and decorated with pictures, for the use of children.

One of the very first books to draw on the Commentaries, Laws Concerning the Election is a landmark in the history of its reception by the English bar. It is also a remarkably thorough work that considers causes determined by parliamentary committee and the House of Commons and the laws of England, Scotland and Wales from 1382 to 1780. Some reference attribute this work to William Bohun. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:151 (21).
