        Grotta di Pozzuoli

circa 1780. Gouache painted on board. Very good condition apart from a few barely visible water stains in the bottom margin. 16 15/16 x 25 1/4 inches. 18 x 26 inches. A charming view of the famous Crypta Neapolitana, an ancient architectural marvel in the Italian town of Pozzuoli, near Naples. Designed by the architect Cocceio during the reign of Augustus, the grotto was a heavily trafficked tunnel used to facilitate trade and transportation between Naples, Pozzuoli and Baiae. Legend has it that the ancient poet Virgil, author of The Aeneid, The Bucolics, and The Georgics and a resident of the environs of Naples, magically created the grotto in the Hill of Posillipo for the benefit of the town's citizens. Situated directly above it is the Tomb of Virgil, the fabled columbarium where the poet was allegedly buried, which is commemorated by an imposing funerary monument located to the left of the cove's mouth. The façade of this monument, which is visible on the left side of this beautiful work, also served as an epitaph on which Sebastiano Bartolo recorded information discovered in his analysis of the water of the two thermal springs (Astroni's Bath) he found in the area in 1668. An impressive feat of Roman engineering, the Crypta Neapolitana has been depicted by many artists through the centuries, among them Seneca and Alexandre Dumas.

Original manuscript catalogue of Books in Mr Christian's Library

Cumberland,: (Workington Hall?),, 1780.. Tall folio; 405 x 160 mm., 20 pp. (eight of which are blank), manuscript in ink; sewn in old wrappers entitled "Catalogue Books Aug 1780 Many added since". A remarkable insight on the Bounty mutineer's family and intellectual background: the original manuscript catalogue of the library of his cousin John Christian (later Christian Curwen, 1756-1828). John Christian's library, which included about 550 volumes, can be seen to have been dominated by works in the category of 'History, Lives, Novels etc', with as yet few books on agriculture, in which Christian/Curwen, later founder of the Agricultural Society, was later to take such an interest. The library inventory is enlightening for the perspective it provides of the family background of the famous Bounty mutineer. The Christian family were descended from the prominent Christians of Milntown in the Isle of Man, but had been settled in Cumberland for three generations by the time John Christian was born. The family were well-read and educated: Fletcher Christian's uncle Ewan Christian was a barrister, and his elder brother Edward a prominent jurist and Downing professor of laws at Cambridge. The catalogue is accompanied by a single leaf titled on the verso "Mr John Christian's Account from February to August 1772...", receipted at the foot by Humphry Christian, and an original photographic reproduction of the Christian family memorial plaque erected at Milntown in 1922, setting out the family lineage from 1380 to 1904. The account relates to John Christian's education and other costs, at the age of sixteen. They include some routine expenses (clothing, pocket money, hay for his horse), others less so ("Mourning Cloaths for Princess Dowager of Wales") - but of most interest are his purchases of books: four are named (including Smart's Horace), at least one of which appears in the 1780 catalogue.

Examen de la Question, Si les Decimateurs ont l'Intention Fondee

1780. [Massez, C.]. Examen de la Question, Si les Decimateurs ont l'Intention Fondee en Droit a la Perception de la Dime des Fruits Insolites en Flandre, Tant Ceux, Qui Sont Insolites Parmi Toute la Province, que de Ceux, Qui ne Sont Insolites que pour Quelques Villages en Particulier. Ghent: Chez P.F. Cocquyt, 1780. vi, 84, [2] pp. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in plain wrappers, untrimmed edges, early hand-lettered title to front, fragments of title label to spine. Some soiling and edgewear, later owner bookplate to verso of front wrapper. Some toning, light soiling to title page, internally clean. * Only edition located. Massez wishes to limit the rights of the church to raise tithes in Flanders. He notes that "God himself established tithes for the Jewish people, where it was part of the dividing-up of the lands, which God himself ordered: [however] amongst the Christian nations, it is men who have ordered this division, men have also introduced tithes there; thus [such a tax] depends on the civil law of each nation" (iii-iv). Massez discusses statutes from 1520 and 1530 onward and disputes their interpretation by Zeger Bernhard van Espen [1646-1728], the distinguished Flemish canon lawyer. OCLC locates 8 copies, 2 in North American law libraries (Columbia, UC-Berkeley). Not in the British Museum Catalogue.

[Attributes: First Edition]

        [Lady Elizabeth Taylor]

circa 1780. Mezzotint. State ii/ii, with engraved inscription. In pristine condition. Image size: 15 7/8 x 12 3/4 inches. 17 3/4 x 12 13/16 inches. 19 7/8 x 13 1/2 inches. A superb proof impression of Sir Joshua Reynolds' portrait of Lady Taylor by William Dickinson. This is a truly stunning proof impression of this exquisite portrait. This excellent impression allows the viewer to see how Dickinson's distinctive engraving style perfectly captures Reynolds' beautiful portrait. William Dickinson was a master of English mezzotint; his delicate images distinguish themselves with their unique style and superior technique. His loose painterly approach has an ephemeral quality, extremely difficult to convey in mezzotint. Unlike other contemporary engravers, Dickinson uses light and shade in his mezzotints to produce a paint-like effect, lending his mezzotints a sense of delicacy. Dickinson began his career as a caricaturist, but soon found that his true talent lay in portrait engraving. He worked with some of the most notable painters in England, artists such as Reynolds, Stubbs, and Kauffman, producing hauntingly beautiful mezzotints of some of their most famous paintings. First Dutch translation of this important and famous account of the Royal Danish Expedition (1761-67) to the Middle East, Egypt, Persia and India, the first scientific expedition to this area. The original German edition was published in Copenhagen in 1744-1778 under the title "Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und anderen umliegenden Ländern". - ''In volume II, p. 317 he [Niebuhr] begins his description of the journey from Beit el Fakih in the coffee mountains. This is accompanied by three engravings'' (Hünersdorff). There are some 40 other references to coffee in this work, including the journey from Sana'a to Mocha. The plates, the same as used for the first German language edition, include many views of cities, antiquities and statues, natives in traditional dress, hieroglyphs, Arabic script, musical instruments, a reception with the Iman of Sana'a (Yemen) and views of the mosque in Meshed Ali. The 31 maps and plans are of Constantinople, the Nile, Dschidda (Jeddah) in the province of Mecca, Bombay, the palace of Persepolis, Muscat, the Persian Gulf, Baghdad, Mosul, etc. Niebuhr's map of Yemen, the first exact map of the area ever, remained the standard for the next 200 years. - ''The expedition had been proposed by the Hebrew scholar Johann David Michäelis of Göttingen for the purpose of illustrating certain passages of the Old Testament, and initially envisaged only a single traveller, possible an Arabic scholar. Light toning to text, faint dampstaining to a few leaves, spark burns to a few others, internally clean. * First edition (one of two issued the same year). This canon-law pamphlet addresses issues concerning the arrival of a Jesuit visitor from Belarus, where, despite bans elsewhere, the Society was allowed to continue with the approval of Pope Pius VI. The anonymous author marshals arguments that display respectful resistance to papal policy. A poignant frontispiece shows a group of Jesuits attempting to prop up a crumbling pyramidal Jesuit edifice as it is struck by a lightning bolt emanating from a cloud emblazoned with papal insignia. A tomb with the inscription "and it is buried" stands alongside; other inscriptions read "in vain have they worked who build it" and "the stone is cracked."         A STATE OF THE EXPEDITION FROM CANADA, AS LAID BEFORE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, BY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL BURGOYNE, AND VERIFIED BY EVIDENCE; WITH A COLLECTION OF AUTHENTIC DOCUMENTS

London. 1780.. viii,140,lxii pp. plus [1]p. entitled "Advertisement," five partially colored folding plans (two with overlays), and folding map. Large quarto. Mid-19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Old repaired tear in first map. Scattered foxing, light tanning. Light dampstain affecting upper and lower margins of four leaves toward rear of text. Some off-setting on the maps. Overall just about very good. The first edition, in large quarto format, of Burgoyne's defense of his conduct as commander of the British expedition down the Hudson Valley from Canada in 1777. Intended to cut the New England colonies off from the rest of rebellious America, the expedition ended in disaster at Saratoga, where American forces soundly defeated Burgoyne and forced his capitulation. Herein Burgoyne answers the inquiry of the House of Commons, demonstrating that the forces he was given were not sufficient to accomplish the task. This is the most important source for information about the campaign, illustrated with excellent maps and plans. The "Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army under His Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Swords House on Hudson's River near Stillwater..." depicts, among other particulars, the "First and Second Positions of that part of the Army engaged on the 19th of September." Tipped to the margin of that plan, as an overlay, is a section of a similar map depicting the "Third and Fourth Positions..." of the Army on that same date. The "Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army under his Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Braemus Heights..." also has an overlay tipped to the margin of the plan indicating the position of Burgoyne's Army on Oct. 8. On the printed plan beneath the overly is indicated the General's camp from Sept. 20 to Oct. 7. STREETER SALE 794. LANDE 69. TPL 503. SABIN 9255. HOWES B968, "aa."

MINUTES OF TREATY KEPT BY GENERAL ROBT. V. RENSILEAR WITH THE INDIANS IN SCHENECTADY [manuscript docket title]

Schenectady. Aug. 28, 1780.. 5pp. plus docketing leaf. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor soiling and wear. Very good. A manuscript transcript of a mediation between Gen. Robert Van Rensselaer and the chiefs of the Oneida nation, regarding an Indian warrior who was found with a wampum belt which represented an alliance with the British against the American colonists. The Americans confronted the Oneida, demanding an explanation. During the spring of 1780, Indian war parties were constantly leaving British-held Fort Niagara for the frontiers of New York, Pennsylvania, and as far south as Virginia. The raiding parties ranged in size from six to seventy-five men. Returning to Fort Niagara, the parties brought prisoners, livestock, and reports of settlers killed and barns burned. Of the Six Nations that comprised the Iroquois Confederacy, the Oneida were the most sympathetic to the colonial cause. Though they tried to maintain neutrality, the Oneida eventually sided with the colonials, even fighting along side them in several battles. In the present document, the General puts forth four questions into the nature of the wampum belt and the man found with it, which the Oneida chiefs answer after questioning the prisoner. The prisoner also makes a speech, which is recorded here. The document reads, in part: "The following are questions asked by General Robt. Van Rensselaer at a Council held with the Sachems of the Oneida Nation this day at which was present General Van Rensselaer, and some gentlemen of this city. When the General [said] to them as follows... 1st, Brothers, does any of you know this Belt? 2ndly, What is the intention or meaning of the said Belt? 3dly, Whether it is customary for a warrior to carry such Belt unless sent on some extraordinary occasion? 4thly, Do you know how the prisoner came by this Belt, or can imagine what was his inducement for going off with it." Van Rensselaer's questions are followed by the response of the Sachems: "Brothers who are now in this room, and have called us by that name, attend to our answer concerning a Belt taken yesterday on suspicion, now before us, and questions added thereon, we are all strangers to the Belt and know not from whence it came. We will call a council of all the warriors, and endeavour to find out from whence it came, and the intention of it, as it may be off [sic] bad consequence both to you and us. Our head man, the Grasshopper, is gone to Albany, we wish for his return which will be between this and evening. An evil spirit is now working in the hearts of some of your brothers to do mischief. We will examine the prisoner who had the Belt, and endeavour to find out from him where he got the Belt, and what is the meaning of the Belt. Brothers let the prisoner be brought before us." It is then recorded that the prisoner confessed that the Belt was given to him by one Sehonendo, after which he was possessed by an evil spirit, though he is now repentant and apologetic. The council adjourned until the afternoon, at which point the Sachems have acquired some answers to Van Rensselaer's questions. They continue: "Brothers hear what we are going to say of the affairs that have happened unfortunate to us this day. We had a counsel in the morning and are now going to conclude. That Belt which was taken yesterday, we have some light of the speech intended to carry with it. The prisoner when he came to Fort Schuyler had that Belt. Sehonendo made a speech on it at Oneida, and then gave it to him the purport of which was, to deliver that silently to Sehonendo's son, and the meaning of the Belt, was, Son draw off. The son would not pay any attention to the Belt sent by his father, and it was his son's answer going by this Belt, which was that he would have nothing to say to his father but remain steady to the Americans, that when they came to Fort Herkimer Sehonendo's son gave the Belt to the prisoner, and would not carry it farther. This is the meaning of the Belt you now see, and the intention of this Belt's returning is to seduce our warriors. There is now no intention of any returning but will remain true to the thirteen states this is all the Belt belongs to the King let it go where you please, you now understand all we know...." The General's response follows, saying "That he imagines him a very bad fellow and has endeavoured not only to carry off Sehonendo's son, but many more of our brothers, and means to send him to Mr. Low at Albany to be there dealt with as he may think proper; that is he was one of our men, he would be immediately tryed and if guilty suffer death." They have, essentially, uncovered an Indian spy behind enemy lines, and this document records his trial, so to speak. A fascinating Revolutionary-era document illuminating relations between whites and Indians and their alliances during the war.

Carte des Declinaisons et Inclinaisons de L'Aiguille Aimantee redigee d'apres la table des observations Magnetiques faites par les Voyageurs depuis l' Annee 1775

[Paris].. Ca. 1780.. Map, copperplate engraving, uncolored, 22 x 22 inches, multiple fold as issued. Good condition: there is light offset from folding, a few small areas in the margin of very light dampstaining which is barely visible (just entering image in a two spots), a few short edge tears well outside of image. This is one sheet of a series, this one showing the eastern coast of Asia, with countries marked from south to north: Cochin Chine, Chine, Coree, Tatarie Chinoise, Tungusi, Tartarie Russe, Kamtchatka, Koriaki and Tschuczki. Among the islands in the Pacific Ocean mapped are:Philippines, Carolines, Hainan, Formose, Lekeyo, Isles du Japon, Isle de Sahalien. At the north east corner the coast of present day Alaska is partially mapped, including Oonalaschka. Much of the mapping of the coast lines reflects a very primitive knowledge, notably in the shapes of Korea and Japan. Compass readings are marked at many points in the ocean. This is apparently from Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle." .

        WORKS OF LAURENCE STERNE

Dublin: np, 1780. 7 volumes. Early Dublin edition, presumed second such and one year after the first Dublin edition. Each volume with a handsome engraved titlepage, volume one with a portrait of Sterne of by Reynolds and a frontispiece by Hogart, 4 additional engravings by Hogart and others as frontispieces to volumes 2 through 5. 12mo, simply but handsomely bound in full contemporary calf, the spines with raised bands and each with one red morocco label lettered in gilt. A fine and attractive set of these classic works, volume one expertly rebacked to match preserving the original morocco label, some volumes with a touch of wear to the joints but all holding firm. An early and important Dublin printing, this was the first edition to include the engraved title pages. It includes Sterne’s masterpiece volumes of TRISTRAM SHANDY as well as THE SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY THROUGH FRANCE AND ITALY, THE LETTERS and THE SERMONS. Also, prefixed to TRISTRAM SHANDY is an account of the life and writings of the author. Sterne, and Tristram Shandy in particular, are generally regarded as innovators of the highest originality. With this work we see the beginning of a long line of writers interested in the “stream-of- consciousness” style which Sterne largely credited to his interest in the nonfictional works of John Locke. Throughout his works he often parodies, with an unmatched virtuosity, the style, form and conventions of the then still very new “novel” and points out the problems with the art form for presenting reality, space and time. His sly, often salacious and always sharp wit is balanced by an obvious affection and tolerance for the delights and absurdities of life.

        William Pitt

Paris: Published by Drouhin, circa 1780. Colour printed mezzotint with plate registration points. Proof before letters. In excellent condition apart from some minor foxing. Small skillfully mended tear on left margin. Image size: 15 x 11 3/8 inches. 16 7/8 x 12 7/8 inches. 18 9/16 x 14 7/16 inches. A magnificent French colour printed portrait of William Pitt, the influential British Prime Minister. William Pitt is considered one of the most influential Prime Ministers in British history. During his time in office he restored British confidence and prosperity after the American Revolution and was a resolute leader of the nation in the war against revolutionary France. Pitt's political objective was to revive the national spirit through peace and economy. He was an excellent financial manager, and he restored Britain's prestige in Europe. Progressive in his politics, he adamantly argued for the abolition of the slave trade, but his entreaties were rejected by Parliament. During his time in office Australia and India were established as British colonies, and a grand period of British supremacy began. Pitt was a superb speaker, and an intelligent caring politician. This magnificent proof print shows the dignity of this great politician and is a wonderful example of early colour printing in France. This method of reproducing colour was a painstaking and meticulous process which produced truly breathtaking images but was soon abandoned for the faster "à la poupée" technique. The colour effect was achieved by inking separate plates, each with a different colour, and then laying them onto the paper using registration holes to line up the image. As in this lovely portrait of Pitt, the process achieves a sense of tonal variation and subtlety which is unrivaled with later colour printing.
