[Holland. ca. 1780].. Broadside, 12 x 13 inches (image size approximately 10 x 11 inches). Early vertical and horizontal folds, else near fine. Matted. Title from George and Stephens, who list a captioned variant; the present engraving is not captioned. A fabulous Dutch satirical cartoon engraving depicting an embattled England during the American Revolution. A table, representing the Bank of England, hangs tipped over a Dutch landscape from a chain attached to the horn of a celestial unicorn. Seated at its edge is a fat Englishman, whom a Frenchman is pulling off the table by his ankle as a kneeling Spaniard looks on. A bemused American Indian baby in feathered headdress is seated at the center of the table, apparently giving England a small shove, and a Dutchman stands opposite the Frenchman, holding one of the table's legs and speaking to an accountant seated among piles of wealth. Below the scene is a tablet engraved in parallel English and Dutch text, a portion of which reads: "Amazing Fool - ! yet tottering on thy bench, Tho' scorn'd by Spain, and cozen'd by the French -- . Only the Dutch, not laughing at your nose, Good-natur'd helps, to snatch what-e'er you lose." Very rare, with only one copy located by OCLC, at Yale. M.D. GEORGE & F.G. STEPHENS, CATALOGUE OF POLITICAL AND PERSONAL SATIRES 5721 (variant).

        I. VUE DU FORT ROYAL DE LA MARTINIQUE...[plus two others with same caption title]. [with:] II. VUE DU PORT DE LA TRINITÉ ET TOUT LE NORT DE LA MARTINIQUE [caption title]

[Augsbourg: F.X. Habermann, ca. 1780].. Four engravings, each approximately 19 x 15 1/2 inches. Moderate edge wear and creasing. Minor dampstaining on first engraving. One print with two- inch piece torn from upper right corner. Light vertical fold line through center. Good. Archivally matted, protected with mylar sheet. A charming set of four views of Martinique. The first three images show Fort Royal from several approaches, including a detailed view over the fort into the harbor which best displays the fort's layout. The fourth view, of Port de la Trinité, shows the settlement in the distance with several ships of the line, including a British vessel, in the foreground. Habermann (1721-96) was a prolific artist who produced several engravings of American scenes for a series he called "Collection des Prospects," which appears in the upper left corner of each of the present images. They were often executed with exaggerated perspectives, and produced in Paris, London, and Augsbourg. The images were produced as "vues d'optique," and travelling showmen would go from city to city with viewing machines with special mirrored lenses which would render the images in a three-dimensional effect. The reversed caption at the top would be legible, and the showman would read the caption aloud. The upper classes often owned their own viewing machines through which to enjoy the images. A rare and unusual series of views of Martinique.

A Voyage to New Guinea, and the Moluccas, from Balambangan

London,: G. Scott,, 1780.. Quarto, with 31 engraved maps and plates, many double-page or folding; a very good copy in modern quarter calf. The second edition of an important and early work on New Guinea, with extensive mapping.Forrest, on the recommendation of Alexander Dalrymple, had pioneered the English East India Company's settlement at the island of Balambangan in Borneo. In 1774 he commanded two English officers and eighteen Malays on a voyage to the Moluccas in a native prahu named the Tartar. He reached as far as Geelvink Bay in western New Guinea, present-day Irian Jaya, on his voyage 'of examination and enquiry rather than of discovery' (Hill). By the time his journey was abandoned at the entreaty of his crew, he had sailed some 4000 miles, returning to Aceh in Sumatra. This was his most famous voyage of exploration, but he also made another important voyage in 1782 when he surveyed the Mergui Archipelago.Hill, 623.

[John Paul Jones, Commander in a Squadron in the Service of The Thirteen United States of America, 1779]

circa 1780. Mezzotint. Scratch lettered impression without title or publication details. Scratched initials R.B in left corner of title space. In good condition with the exception of some minor yellowing to paper. Image size: 12 7/16 x 10 inches. 14 x 10 inches. 21 7/8 x 14 1/2 inches. This stunning print is a rare portrait of John Paul Jones, the father of the American Navy, and one of the most celebrated American heroes. During this period naval portraits adopted a certain compositional formula in which the sitter was positioned in front a scene illustrating his most noteworthy victory. Thus, this striking portrait of John Paul Jones. Jones holds a telescope, his hand resting on a large anchor, calmly facing the viewer, while his ship explodes in the background, prelude to his famous victory over Captain Pearson of the Serapis. John Paul Jones is the father of the American Navy and one of the nation's heroes. Fought in the English Channel, Jones's surprising victory over the Serapis and the merchantmen she was escorting was his most famous engagement, and became a great morale booster to the American side. It was during this heated battle when his ship, Bon Homme Richard was sinking, and he was requested to surrender that he said, "I have not yet begun to fight".         The Water-cress Girl; The Flower Girl. Engraved from the original in the posession of Jacob Wilkinson Esqr

London: [the first:] J.R. Smith, W. Humphreys & Birchall; [the second:] J. Young, 9 September 1780 and 12 September 1784. Mezzotints, the first by John Raphael Smith, the second by John Young. 13 5/8 x 10 3/4; 13 5/8 x 10 5/8 inches. 18 3/8 x 13 1/2; 17 5/8 x 12 3/4 inches. Two very fine mezzotints by two of the greatest engravers of their day, after the society artist Joseph Zoffany. These two fine character studies represent what are probably Zoffany's only two works in this genre, and perhaps were one of the inspirations for Francis Wheatley's well-known series: the Cries of London. It is interesting to note that John Young produced his own version of The Water-cress Girl' (published 1 January 1785), at which time both of the original paintings were in the collection of Jacob Wilkinson. Given the publication date of the present John Raphael Smith version of The Water-cress Girl, it seems likely that both paintings were produced shortly after Zoffany's return from Italy in 1779. The second image was printed after Zoffany had left for India in 1783. John Young, presumably in an effort to capitalise on the success of the present two images, published two works in a similar vein after J.G. Huck (The Oyster Girl and The Grape Girl) in April 1786.

- Etwas berieben, tls. leicht fleckig. Insgesamt schönes Exemplar!

A South-East View of the City of Boston in North America

London: Printed for Carington Bowles, [circa 1780]. Engraving, on laid paper, full period hand colouring. Linen backed at a very early date. 12 1/4 x 18 3/8 inches. The third state of this important early view of Boston, based on an original drawing by William Burgis. "This interesting view of Boston from the bay, showing the waterfront with the Long Wharf in the foreground, was apparently based on the first state of the 1723 Burgis prospect of the New England city. When John Carwitham prepared the engraving, he added the Old South Meeting House and Hollis Street Meeting house, both built in 1731. The spire of Christ Church seen in the Burgis view -- then an architectural projection rather than a reality -- was retained by Carwitham even though the spire would not be built until about 1740" (Deák p.53). Brightly hand-colored in a thick gouache, the engraving was intended by Bowles as part of a series of prints to be used in a peep show or optical viewer. Operating one of the largest print "warehouses" in London, Bowles capitalized on the interest in the American colonies brought about by the Revolution and issued several such views of American cities. This is the third state of the Boston view, with the number 34 added to the plate just to the left of the title. Deák Picturing America I,86; cf. J. Winsor Memorial History of Boston II,pp.531-2; Stokes and Haskall American Historical Prints p. 14; Cresswell 496.

Quand l'Hymen dort, l'Amour veille [When Marriage sleeps, love awakens)

Paris: Chez Vidal, Graveur, Rue de la Harpe, No. 181, circa 1780. Colour- printed stipple engraving. In excellent condition. Image size: 13 3/4 x 16 3/4 inches. 15 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. 16 1/16 x 18 3/4 inches. A magnificent impression of this breathtaking colour-printed genre print, exhibiting the best of French Rococo art. French genre prints frequently had to do with romance, unlike English genre prints which avoided the topic. This wonderful print by Mauclerc after Schall [Challe in the title] epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art, and is, as well, a fine example of French colour printing. The scene depicts an elegantly dressed young woman sitting on the lap of her sleeping husband. She deposits and points to a letter in the quiver of a statue of Cupid, while her lover watches in happy expectation. Fountains in the background symbolize their hopes. This impression is a lovely example of early colour printing, which was developed as a means of reproducing the effects of painting in oils. It exemplifies the single plate colour printing technique used in England, then adopted in France, at the close of the eighteenth century The effect is achieved by inking a single plate with several different colours, using a rag stump, known as "a la poupée". The outcome achieved by this laborious method has a wonderful painterly effect and creates a delicacy of image which is charming to behold. Nevill, French Prints of the Eighteenth Century p. 121

Biographical Memoir of Daniel Boone, the First Settler of Kentucky: Interspersed with Incidents in the Early Annals of the Country

8vo, contemporary cloth, illustrated with frontispiece portrait of Boone, and 9 full page illustrations, 252pp. Binding shows some wear, and book has slight tilt. Frontispiece somewhat faded, the usual foxing, and a little staining. Has been rebacked, and overall is in very good condition. This is a first edition, second issue of Flint?s (1780-1840) popular biography of Boone. This work appeared in some 14th editions, and did much to establish Boone as a frontier legend. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of exaggeration in the work, which is illustrated with several illustrations showing Boone, in a coonskin hat, shooting panthers, fighting bears, and exploring the ?wild frontier?. In reality, Boone (1734-1820) did live a colorful life, even if he didn?t shoot panthers off the backs of buffaloes. He was an Indian fighter, an explorer, and even fought in the French and Indian War. While Boone will forever be linked with the early settlement of Kentucky, he did live in West Virginia for ten years, and ended up settling in Missouri.

CHRONOLOGICAL INDEX ; Years and Times from Adam unto Chris 3. Postscript 4 TABLES or Scripture Measures 5. Brief Chronolgical Catalogue of Apostles 6. Directions to the Binder 7. List of subscribers. list of 318 subscribers. We believe this is a rare first edition, 1773, according to the British Museum which was printed in only 1 volume. The title page does indicate a presumptive printing of the second volume containing the New Testament, but it is not part of this copy, nor are there any indications that this was printed with the New Testament contents. However, all of the charts, indexes, etc are contained. Which allows us to conclude that this was the complete first, with the second printing in 2 volumes, re-issued in 1774. There are several minuscule tears which can be easily repaired with archival tape. There is also, occasional foxing, here and there spotting, and a few creases. Top of age toned. Some of the plates are age spotted. As a bonus, included are several pages of writing. 1. Loosely inserted is a handwritten page of "Family Merchandise" dated 1833, New York, written by William Pittman. 2. In verso of the GATES OF GAZA print, in the JUDGES section, there is a neatly written brief family history containing birth, death and marriage data for the SMITH -PITTMAN's between the years 1776 - 1804. HEAVEY and OVERSIZED, additional postage may apply. .
