The best-known of them is Eloisa en dishabille: being a new version of that lady's celebrated epistle to Abelard, done into familiar English metre by a lounger (1780), which is a parody of Pope's 'Eloisa to Abelard'. It was reprinted in 1801, and again in 1822, when the bookseller put on the title-page that it was 'ascribed to [Richard] Porson'.

Troyes: Jean-Antoine Garnier, 1780. 4to (220 x 169 mm). 76 pp. Roman type, double columns. 60 woodcut illustrations, including title-cut, of which 44 oblong and half-page, the others various sizes, including a few repeats; one block signed "VERNIE." Type-ornament head and tail-pieces and a border. Discreetly repaired tears to upper blank corner of fol. C1, occasional foxing as usual. Modern binding (by Lobstein) of 18th-century marbled paper over boards, red morocco longitudinal title label on backstrip with uneven, deliberately "dancing" gold-tooled letters, 3 holes in gutters from the original stab-stitching. A large copy, with deckle edges. *** A classic of the chapbook publications known as the Bibliothèque bleue, after their originally blue paper covers. This 18th-century Dance of Death is illustrated with woodcut copies of the illustrations from Guy Marchant's editions of the Danse macabre, printed between 1485 and 1492. The present undated edition, one of at least three from the Garnier press, is often misdated to 1728, based on the privilege, for this and other chapbook titles, reprinted verbatim from the edition issued in 1728 by Jean-Antoine Garnier's grandfather Pierre. Born in 1742, Jean-Antoine Garnier was active as a printer-bookseller from 1766 to 1780. Earlier Troyes editions were published by members of the Oudot family, founders of the Troyes chapbook series. Brunet (II, 495) noted that the Troyes chapbook publishers were suppliers of popular books to all the fairs in France; hence the many Troyes editions of this eternally evocative illustrated book. The Danse macabre proper ends on page 53 and is followed by several other verse texts: La Mort menace l'humain Lignage; Le Débat du corps et de l'âme, illustrated with a pair of woodcuts, printed twice; La douloureuse complainte de l'âme damnée; L'Exhortation de bien vivre et de bien mourir, with a large cut of Death carrying a coffin in a graveyard, also used on p. 2 to illustrate the "Author"; La Vie du mauvais Ante-Christ; Les quinze signes [preceding the Last Judgment]; and Le Jugement. The text of the original French Danse macabre was heavily altered during the course of the 17th century, as were, no doubt, these additional verse texts; thus the text of this edition differs greatly from that published in editions up to and including the Troyes 1641 edition of Nicolas Oudot (transcribed on Martin Hagstrøm's website). But the text is mainly a support to the woodcuts, in which Death appears as artfully posed pairs of cadavers, many with their lower torsos sliced open showing their intestines, arriving to take away those whose time has come, from every walk of life and of every age and social class. These illustrations retained their power and grim fascination throughout the centuries, and still do. Arthur Hind incorrectly claimed (Introduction to a History of Woodcut II: 647) that a number of the woodcuts of the Garnier editions were printed from the 15th-century blocks used in Marchant's editions. Those original woodcuts, attributed to Pierre le Rouge, were based on manuscripts reproducing an early 15th-century mural in the Cimitière des Innocents in Paris, painted on a wall which was destroyed in 1669. The Le Rouge blocks were handed down to his son Guillaume, and thence to Guillaume's cousin Nicolas le Rouge, who used them in his own editions in Troyes in the 1520s and 1530s. Many of these blocks survived to the mid-17th-century, when they resurfaced in the 1641 edition of Nicolas Oudot, but later editions, including this one, are illustrated with copies of the original blocks, and often copies of copies. (When a block was lost, it ceased to be copied, and that iconographic theme disappeared from subsequent editions.) Two of the cuts in this edition were indeed printed from 15th-century blocks, from Marchant's editions of the Compost et kalendrier des bergers: that of the souls of the damned in hell, on p. 26, and the portrait of the author, on p. 33, which originally represented the month of April; both have damaged or missing borders. Some of the woodcut copies are quite exact: for example, the second of the two nearly identical blocks of the African (Moor) sounding a horn, on pages 25 and 27, is a very close copy of the cut used in Nicolas Le Rouge's ca. 1510 and 1531 editions (the 1510 edition, Bechtel D-53, is reproduced in Christie's sale catalogue of the Vershbow library, part 2, 10 April 2013, lot 155, and the Arsenal copy of the 1531 edition is digitized on Gallica). There are other instances of two different blocks of the same illustration: the title cut of the four cadaver-musicians, for example, is repeated on p. 54, but what appears to be the same illustration on page 3 is from a different, and better, block. A possible explanation for these duplications lies in the acquisition, in the late 1760s, by either Jean-Antoine Garnier himself or his father Jean Garnier (sources differ) of the Oudot premises at the Rue du Temple in Troyes, purchased from Jean IV Oudot's widow (that address appears in the imprint of this edition, which was therefore published later). Along with the house Jean Garnier acquired the Oudot stock, which would have included the block used on page 3. (Martin Hagstrøm speculates that Jean-Antoine Garnier used the inferior block on the title-page out of respect for his grandfather, who had commissioned it for his 1728 edition.) Morin, Catalogue descriptif de la Bibliothèque bleue de Troyes, 434; Nisard, Histoire des livres populaires II: 284-311; Fairfax Murray French 108; cf. Minns catalogue (Illustrated catalogue of the notable collection of Miss Susan Minns of Boston, Mass. New York: American Art Association, 1922), 143 (one of three undated editions with Jean-Antoine Garnier's imprint). See also Martin Hagstrøm's website on the Dance of Death, www.dodedans.com, for information on the text and blocks of the Troyes editions.

Autograph Letter, signed ("B Arnold"), to the Adjutant Quartermaster General, requesting fresh horses

Headquarters, Robinson House [Garrison, N.Y.], 1780. [1] p. pen and ink on paper. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor wear and soiiling, some separation starting at folds. About very good. [1] p. pen and ink on paper. Folio. Requesting Horses For Courier Duty, Possibly to the English. A letter written by General Benedict Arnold the day after receiving word that British General Henry Clinton had agreed to his price for turning his coat.  In his letter, Arnold requests fresh horses to run express courier routes - some of which surely carried treasonous information to the British.  He writes:   "Sir,  I have sent the brave Sergeant Pike for six or eight of the best horses you have in pasture for the purpose of relieving the light horse employed here to go express.  With hard service and want of forage they are worn down & unfit for use.  You will please to deliver him eight of the best horses you have if we can find so many that will answer.  Also, a pair of the best waggon horses you have in lieu of two which were sent to me by Col. Hay who will not draw."  The letter was clearly drawn up in some haste, as there are several words stricken through where Arnold has changed his mind about phrasing or information.   In June 1778, Washington placed Arnold in command of Philadelphia, where he lived and entertained extravagantly, and his private business dealings, haughty and dismissive behavior, and close association with the Shippens and other quasi-Loyalists excited the enmity and wrath of the Executive Council of Pennsylvania.  On Feb. 3, 1779, a courier served him with a copy of eight formal charges filed against him by the Pennsylvania Council.  Outraged, Arnold demanded a court martial to clear the allegations against him.  "From this period began the plot that would end, eighteen months later, with Arnold's defection to the British side. ... He used those channels to inform General Henry Clinton, commanding the British army, that he was ready to serve the Crown.  He explained to Clinton that he had lost faith in the revolutionary cause when the United States allied itself with France.  No evidence before May 1779 supports this claim.  Clinton was cautious but interested in the chance that Arnold might betray a key point in American defenses.  He left the matter in the hands of young staff officer, John André." - ANB. By July Arnold had named his minimum price - £10,000 - and on August 1 became commander of the critical American fortress at West Point. By the time this letter was written, important information was passing from Arnold to Clinton, and the plot to betray West Point was well advanced.   A wonderful letter, hastily written and clearly showing Arnold's agitation as he slid deeper into infamy.

This scarce and unusual twin hemisphere map is presented on a polar projection. The approximate position of the northern magnetic pole, indicated by a large shaded area, is located just north of the Arctic Circle. The variations in terrestrial magnetism at different points on the earth's surface are indicated throughout the map. The boldly engraved map shows only the continental outlines with few country and place names. Alaska is in a rudimentary shape, the southern coast of Australia is still unknown and Tasmania is thought to be connected to the mainland. The chart reflects the latest discoveries with evidence of Capt. Cook's Pacific surveys, La Perouse's last voyage to the Pacific in 1775, and also the work of Jean-Charles Borda who is credited with the first observations on the variations in terrestrial magnetism. The map is sometimes attributed to La Perouse, but was published in the scarce mineralogy section of Buffon's Historie Naturelle. Original Etching/engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Explorers, seeking a 'westward passage' to the Pacific, believed an inland water route was not only reasonable, but highly likely. With no concept that the vast barrier of the Rocky Mountains stood in their way, they mapped out the likely courses for this route, as depicted on this map. They believed one could pass through the Great Lakes and, roughly following the current US-Canada border, pass upriver to Rainey Lake (L. Tecamamiouen)and then, through another River, to the Lake of the Woods (Lac des Bois), then, via another river, to (though it does not appear on this map) Lake Winnipeg. Here the water route westward ends - though at the time they didn't know it. Throughout this map, Bonne attempts to document rivers, mountains, forts, and American Indian tribes and villages with the most recent data obtainable. He identifies the lands of the Sioux, the Iroquois (Five Nations), the Algonquians, the Illinois, and many others. Chicago (Chicagou) and Detroit both appear as forts. The Great Lakes are mapped with a rough approximation of accuracy, though Lake Superior does include a number of apocryphal islands including I. Ponchartrain and I. Minong (also known as Phillipeaux). These islands first appeared Bellin's mapping of the region in 1750s and continued to appear until the 1820s. Also of note are the possible headwaters of the Mississippi, which the map describes as 'La Source en est inconnue.' Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Rigobert Bonne' after an anonymous artist. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795 ) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Condition: Good, given age.

Troyes: Jean-Antoine Garnier, [ca. 1770-1780]. Autograph Letter, Signed, "Peter Freneau," to John Covenhoven of Freehold, New Jersey, written during the Revolutionary War period

Philadelphia, 1780. 2 pp. pen and ink on paper. 8vo. Old folds with several perforations, portion of last leaf missing, with no loss to text, else Vg. 2 pp. pen and ink on paper. 8vo. THE OTHER FRENEAU. A letter complaining bitterly of compensation recieved for a horse. Reading in part: "I am informed that you have recd. £50 for the Horse that I lost in Mr. Budinot's service, this sum is so far from making me any satisfaction that I am determined not to take it, the Horse cost me upwards of of £20 in Specie, I think it is just that I should have more than £50 Continentals which at the present Exchange is only 16/8 a very Small Compensation for lying out of my property upwards of two years... inform Mr. Budinot that I had rather Loose the horse than take a mere Shaddow in pay for him."Born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, in 1757 Peter Freneau set out for Charleston, South Carolina 1782, and would remain a South Carolinian until his death. Politician, printer, newspaper founder and editor, land speculator, ship owner, slave trader, and Jeffersonian champion, Freneau served as South Carolina's secretary of state from 1787 to 1795. As editor of the influential, Carolina Gazette, Freneau was the "voice of Republicanism in South Carolina" and played a key role in securing the state for Jefferson in the brutally contested presidential election of 1800. In 1806, Freneau was elected to the the state House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 1808, but resigned to accept an appointment by Jefferson as commissioner of loans for South Carolina. Plagued by finical reverses, he died in Charleston, in 1813. Overshadowed in history by his older brother, Philip, "the Poet of the American Revolution," Richard B. Davis and Milledge B. Seigler wrote in the Journal of Southern History (Vol.13, no. 3, August 1947) that "Seldom has oblivion swallowed a man of powerful intellect and political stature as completely as it has Peter Freneau…"Elias Boudinot (1740-1821) was Commissary General of Prisoners from 1777-1778, a member of the New Jersey Provincial Congress, and then a delegate to the Continental Congress. He left congress in 1795 and was appointed as Director of the US Mint by George Washington.John Covenhoven (b.1734) of Freehold, N.J., was a colonel in the milita, Vice-President of the Provincial Congress and served in the general assembly from 1781 to 1782.This letter was published in the Appendix to Mary Austin's 1901 biography of Philip Freneau, with a note that it was in the possession of W. Jay Mills, author of "Historic Houses of New Jersey."

The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with preliminary observations, and an account of some foreign prisons and hospitals.

Warrington: William Eyres; and sold by T. Cadell... and N.Conant... London, 1780. Octavo, with ten folding engraved plates including seven highly detailed architectural plans; a superb copy in original condition, edges completely uncut, in original boards, spine lettered in ink preserved in a quarter morocco case. A very fine copy of the second and best edition of John Howard's exhaustive and highly influential examination of the prisons of Britain and Europe, considerably enlarged from the first edition of 1777 and with an additional seven engraved folding plates. Howard's criticism of British gaols was contemporary with recent discoveries in the Pacific, marking IT out as one of the fundamental works in the debate that would culminate in the establishment of the penal colony at Botany Bay.Howard's study is a landmark in the history of criminology. Like his successor Jeremy Bentham, Howard took great interest in the architecture of prisons and demonstrated that an improvement of the penal environment could promote rehabilitation. The extended series of plates prepared for this edition includes seven detailed plans of existing prisons including Newgate and the Bastille. In 1773 Howard accepted the office of high sheriff of Bedford and was appalled by the conditions in the local gaol. As a result, he began an exhaustive examination of British gaols and in 1774 gave evidence to a parliamentary committee which legislated for gaolers to be paid a fixed salary to minimise their extorting money from prisoners, while all those detained without charge were immediately released. Howard continued to agitate for better food and medical care and launched a systematic inspection of British and continental gaols. The State of Prisons is a rich source of statistical data and detailed description alike. Interestingly, this second edition expands upon the condition of the Thames hulks based on a series of visits made in 1779. Howard reports that the pursers' weights were doctored for personal gain and that new rations of cloth and bedding had been issued specifically for his visits to the Justicia and her sister hulk the Censor. He reports horrific mortality rates on the hulk Justicia: between August 1776 and March 1778 a staggering 176 of the 632 prisoners had died. The appalling conditions and vice on the hulks led to their widespread condemnation and calls for transportation as a preferable state of affairs. He draws comparisons between the elimination of scurvy at sea and maintaining the health of prisoners and refers to the scholarship of Sir John Pringle and James Lind, both eminent contemporary physicians of the scurvy problem. Tragically, Howard would die in the Crimea in 1790 from the very prison fever he sought to eradicate. Provenance: Private collection (Sydney). A little appropriate wear to binding; generally in admirable original condition.

Johann Daniel Preissler (1666, Nuremberg – 1737) was a notable member of a German artistic family, originating in Bohemia. His children included Johan Martin Preisler, Georg Martin Preisler and Johann Justin Preissler, all artists. Most notable for his portraits, nudes and history paintings, he also produced drawings and frescoes. He was also known beyond Nuremberg for his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" (full title: "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic oder Gründlich verfasste Reguln deren man sich als einer Anleitung zu berühmter Künstlere Zeichen-Wercke bestens bedienen kann"), a sequence of works on art-theory – the individual works were translated into several other languages and served as textbooks for students such as the Swiss Salomon Gessner right up until the 19th century. By the time of his death in 1737, Johann Caspar Füssli spoke of Preissler and Jan Kupecky as the two most famous Nuremberg artists of the early 18th century. He received his first artistic training in his home town under his father, the history painter and portraitist Daniel Preissler (1627–1665), continuing his education in the studio of Johann Murrer. From 1688 to 1696 he stayed in Italy, including periods in Rome and Venice. In 1705 he became the director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts, which under his leadership turned into a city institution. In 1716 he founded the Zeichenschule (drawing school), open to "poor people's children" – it proved a great success. With 71 students entering in the first year, its intake was so large that in 1721 Preissler began producing the teaching materials which later became his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" – he had previously only published academic works, such as ones on anatomy. Preissler also wrote on the academically neglected topics such as ornament and flower-drawing (in 1725) and landscape drawing (1739), though throughout his writing he insisted that these were only beginners' lessons.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
