Überschriften. Nebst Opitzens, Tschernings, Andreas Gryphius und Adam Olearius epigrammatischen Gedichten. (Herausgegeben von Karl Wilhelm Ramler).

Leipzig, bey Weidmanns Erben und Reich, 1780 - Mit gestochenem Frontispiz und gestochener Titelvignette (J.W. Meil del.). XXXII, 436 S., 1 Bl. (Trauzettel Bl. Nr.1141). - Hinterer Deckel leicht berieben, Vorsätze etwas stockfleckig. - Sehr schönes Exemplar. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Reisen durch die innern gegenden von Nord-Amerika.aus dem Englischen.

C.E. Bohn, Hamburg 1780 - First German edition and first edition in a foreign language, 8vo, pp. xxiv, 456; engraved folding map; nice copy of a scarce edition in 20th century 3/4 red morocco gilt by Stikeman. A seminal book in the history of the exploration of the American west, and a cornerstone in Minnesota history. Peace between Great Britain and France at the close of the French and Indian Wars in 1763 brought eastern Minnesota under the British flag for the first time, thus opening the vast territory to British fur traders. "Carver spent the winter of 1766-67 a short distance up the Minnesota River with the Sioux. He was then serving as mapmaker and advance man on an expedition, led by Captain James Tute and inspired by Maj. Robert Rogers, commandant at Fort Mackinac, intended to cross the continent in quest of the Northwest Passage. The plan had to be given up, but Carver later wrote and published an account of his travels which became a "best seller" of its day, and gave to thousands on both sides of the Atlantic their first information about the Minnesota country" (Fridley, A Sketch of Minnesota, p. 3). The whole is laid in two separate half morocco clamshell boxes. A substantial portion of this extremely rare history of the American Revolution, printed in Boston, and apparently based on British sources, including William Russell's HISTORY OF AMERICA and Burke's AN IMPARTIAL HISTORY OF THE WAR IN AMERICA. The present offering consists of the following: 1) A nearly complete example of the first volume, with eighty-eight of ninety pages present, lacking only the final text leaf. 2) An incomplete, though extensive, set of the unbound sheets of the second volume, lacking leaf K8 (pages 159-169) and pages 225-288 and 353-358, but all other parts are present. The third and final volume, consisting of 84,[4] pages (not present here) brought the account up to 1779. 3) A variant printing of the first section (eighty pages) of the second volume, in which dashes are not used in the chapter summaries at the head of each chapter.         Préjugés militaires, par un officier autrichien.

'A Kralovelhota' (author's private press at Beloeil Castle) 1780 - 2 volumes in 8vo. [4] + 224p; [2] + 148p including engraved dedication leaf, and 2 leaves of addititional index at end; with 20 engraved plates (mostly folding) showing arms and military tactics, 2 folding tables; 14 exquisitely engraved vignettes of battles by Choffard in the text. Ornamental vignettes. Half calf, marbled boards. First edition of one of the most charming 18th century illustrated book, a witty discussion of contemporary army tactics by an Austrian field marshal. The Prince de Ligne (1735-1814) first distinguished himself during the Seven-Years' War against Frederick the Great whom he greatly admired and who appears to be the only authority not questioned here. Ligne seems to have been a follower of the French tactician Guibert, who in turn had been influenced by the Prussian method. The first volume comprises general observations on cavalry and infantry, artillery, fortification, discipline etc, as well as chapters on military medicine and hospitals; it is adorned with exquisite miniature textual illustrations (48 x 73mm) of famous battles of the Seven Years' War (1756-63), engraved by Choffard after designs by the author, making it one of the most charming of 18th century books. The second volume, entitled 'Fantaisies Militaires', is devoted to battle orders, composition of army units, and general manoeuvres. This edition is also interesting as a typographical curiosity, having been printed at the author's private press at Beloeil Castle, famous for its gardens, and published with a spurious imprint. It was later reprinted at Dresden and translated into German in 1783. A few occasional insignificant light traces of usage, but a very good copy from the Liechtenstein collection with armorial bookplate on verso of front flyleaf of each volume.         The New Building on Shrubs Hill

1780 - A beautifully coloured print of the newly constructed Fort Belvedere in Windsor Forest, Berkshire. Erected by the Duke of Cumberland in 1755, Belvedere was expanded into a hunting lodge for King George IV. The triangular turreted structure was set amidst a dense plantation of trees and overlooked Virginia Water, a man-made body of water constructed by Thomas and Paul Sandby at the behest of the Duke. Belvedere was later renovated and inhabited by Edward VIII, Prince of Wales. Brother of the celebrated artist Paul Sandby, the architect and draughtsman Thomas Sandby was an eminent artist in his own right. Essentially self-taught, he moved to London, where he assumed the position of draughtsman and personal secretary of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, whom he attended on his military campaigns in Scotland and the Netherlands from 1743 to 1748. On these expeditions, he made many detailed sketches of the various battles, encampments, and scenery he observed. Upon being chosen ranger of Windsor Park in 1746, Cumberland appointed Sandby deputy ranger, a position he would hold for the duration of his life. During his tenure as deputy ranger, Sandby inhabited the lower lodge and was responsible for overseeing modifications made to the park's land and any renovations to its buildings including Cumberland Lodge. He illustrated the many projects he undertook, and several of his drawings and designs were engraved and published as folios. In addition to his duties at Windsor, Sandby designed a number of houses in the adjacent neighborhood and was appointed architect and master-carpenter of his majesty's works in 1777 and 1780 respectively. Like his brother, he was an original member of the Royal Academy, where he regularly taught and lectured on architecture. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography. Hand-coloured engraving, printed on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and a few small losses and skillfully repaired tears along the edge of the top margin. A few small surface abrasions along the exterior of the platemark. Trimmed virtually to the platemark on the right side.

(Garnier, n°1337. Goldsmiths, n°12061. INED, n°3039). Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The famous account of the Royal Danish Expedition (1761-67) to the Middle East, Egypt, Persia and India, the first scientific expedition to this area. Niebuhr's "work on Arabia was the first European attempt at a complete account of Arabia, its people and their way of life. He amassed a vast quantity of factual information which he relates in a simple unrhetorical fashion, distinguishing clearly between things observed personally and things learned from others. The expedition, which lasted six years, was sponsored by the Danish king, and included the brilliant Swedish scientist, Peter Forsskal, who died while in Yemen" (Cat. Sotheby‘s, 13 Oct 98, lot 1010). Of the five scientists, Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the sole survivor, and his work represents an important contribution to the study of the Middle East. His map of the Yemen, the first exact map of the area ever, remained the standard for the next 200 years. - Old stamps erased from title pages (leaving insignificant waterstain), otherwise a perfect set in immaculate original French bindings.         Reflexiones imparciales sobre la humanidad de los Españoles en las Indias, contra los pretendidos filósofos y políticos. Para ilustrar las historias de MM Raynal y Robertson

lii+315 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Translated with notes by Pedro Varela y Ulloa. (Palau 196692.) First Spanish edition.A text that engaged the well-studied debates about the natural history of the Americas and Spain?s colonial history. In 1780, in Venice, Juan Nuix published Riflessioni imparziali supra l'umanita degli spagnuoli nell' Indie contro i pretersi filosofi e politici. Nuix, a Catalan living in Italy since the expulsion of the Jesuits, wrote the book to defend Spanish colonialism and historiography against the attacks of Robertson and Raynal. It sailed by the censors in the Council of the Indies, and two separate translations appeared in succession, one in 1782, edited by a member of the Royal Council, Pedro Varela y Ulloa, and another in 1783, by Joseph Nuix, Juan's brother. The Spanish edition sponsored by the crown opened with an essay by Varela y Ulloa, in which he first offered a searing Critique of traditional forms of colonialism, not unlike that put forth by Raynal. After describing military campaigns in foreign lands, from Alexander the Great to Genghis Kahn, as butcheries, Varela y Ulloa went on to claim that the Spanish colonialism was unique. The crimes attributed to Spain in the Indies had been committed by private individuals, who did not represent the nation as a whole, and who had acted as they did while surrounded by hungry cannibals. Moreover, compared with the atrocities committed by other European colonial powers, the actions of the Spaniards looked like misdemeanors. Varela y Ulloa's effort to portray Spanish colonialism as unique benign captured the essence of Nuix's thesis well. Nuix's defense of the record of Spanish colonialism opened with passages that sought to bolster his credibility by stressing that he was a Catalan, and that Catalans had not really participated in the Spanish colonization of the Indies, so that he could not be accused of being partisan. He then articulated a five-pronged defense of Castilian colonial behavior in America, seeking to demonstrate the unreliability of the sources used by Robertson and Raynal, and of their interpretations. Nuix First set out to prove that charges of Spanish cruelty to Amerindians were exaggerations, originally put into circulation by writers such as Las Casas, whose reports on the destruction of the Indies were at the root of most foreign criticisms of Spain. According to Nuix, Las Casas was of Flemish origin, which explained why he had sought to undermine Spain. Las Casas also often contradicted himself, Nuix argued no impartial jury could trust such "an inept" witness. Foreign historians who had echoed Las Casas's allegations were not credible either, not Robertson, whose moderation had prompted him to dismiss Las Casas. Robertson had selected and reinterpreted the testimony of Spanish witnesses when recounting various colonial massacres. Instead of quoting them, moreover, Robertson had manipulated the testimony of witnesses to depict the Amerindians as passive victims of Spanish cruelty. History was not a matter of interpretation, however, but of faithfully presenting the testimony of witnesses, and in that respect, Robertson lacked credibility. In order to prove that Spaniards in America had not behaved like greedy barbarians, Nuix argued that the alleged depopulation caused by the Conquest was the product of factors outside human control. The infantile susceptibility of the natives to disease, for example, was why epidemics had wiped them out. The barrenness of the Americas and the idleness of the originally small number of natives had moved the conquerors to create economies based on mining and large estates. Such economies along with the foreign monopoly on colonial trade, not Spanish cruelty and greed, Nuix contended, were responsible for having slowed both markets and population growth.Condition:Provenance: Book plate of Alberto Parreño, formerly president of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce in New York, to front paste down.         A CHART OF THE BAY AND HARBOUR OF PENSACOLA IN THE PROVINCE OF WEST FLORIDA SURVEYED BY GEORGE GAULD A.M.

London: J.F.W. Des Barres in the ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, August 1st, . 1780 - Copper-engraved sea chart with aquatint, and details heightened in original color. Sheet size: 21 3/16 x 31 5/16 inches. Very good. A very rare and highly important sea chart of Pensacola Harbor and northwestern Florida from THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, the finest marine atlas of North America's east coast, produced during the Revolutionary War. This superbly drafted map features the magnificent natural harbor of Pensacola on the Florida panhandle. Des Barres based this rendering on manuscript survey maps by the British military engineer George Gauld. The town, with its fort and carefully laid out streets is featured in the left-centre of the map. Another settlement "Campbell Town" is located further up the harbor toward the entrance of the "Scambia" (Escambia) River. The borders of various land grants are demarcated, and the countryside is elegantly detailed with aquatint features, and colored in a light brown-green wash. The chart precisely captures the features of the coast, showing how the harbor is protected by two sandy bars of land, the outer being Santa Rosa Island. The chart features a great deal of quantitative hydrographic information, and instructions to mariners are written in the lower right of the map, ensuring that it was by far the most accurate and comprehensive pilot for the harbor produced in the 18th century. The present example is the second of two variants of this chart distinguished by the heightening of the townscapes in a brilliant red hue of original color. It is important to note that the very year that this map was printed the region was caught up in the dramatic action of the Revolutionary War. The Spaniards, who had just joined the war on the American side, seized the British garrison at Fort Barrancas, and West Florida remained in their possession for the duration of the war. Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres was born in Switzerland, where his Huguenot ancestors had fled following the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. He studied under the great mathematician, Daniel Bernoulli, at the University of Basel, before immigrating to Britain where he trained at the Royal Military College, Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the legendary future explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. With these extremely accurate surveys in hand, Des Barres returned to London in 1774, where the Royal Navy charged him with the Herculean task of producing the atlas. He was gradually forwarded the manuscripts of numerous advanced surveys conducted by British cartographers in the American Colonies, Jamaica, and Cuba. The result was THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, which became the most celebrated sea atlas of its era, containing the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America. Des Barres' synergy of great empirical accuracy with the peerless artistic virtue of his aquatint views, created a work that "has been described as the most splendid collection of charts, plates and views ever published" (NMM). THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE eventually consisted of four volumes and Des Barres' dedication to the project was so strong that often at his own expense he continually updated and added new charts and views to various editions up until 1784, producing over 250 charts and views, many appearing in several variations. All of these charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, such that in many cases they remained the most au

At the time it was common for wealthy travelers to be accompanied by an artist. Salt made many paintings on this voyage, some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's publication of his travels, published in 1809 as "Twenty-four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia, and Egypt". This set of hand-colored aquatint engravings, executed by Robert and Daniel Havell, is often compared to Thomas and William Daniell's publication "Oriental Scenery" (1795-1808) and David Roberts' "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia" (1842-1849). Salt was a skilled draughtsman, portraying both the sweeping panoramic landscapes of India, Abysinnia and Egypt, and the costume and lifestyle of the peoples inhabiting those lands. After finishing this publication, Salt was summoned back to Abyssinia in 1809 by the British government to establish diplomatic and trading links. In 1816 Salt was given the post of British Consul-General of Egypt. His position gave him unique opportunities to pursue his growing interest in the monuments and antiquities of Egypt. He employed archeologists such as Giovanni Belzoni to excavate ancient Egyptian sites, such as Thebes, Giza and Abu Simbel, and undertook important archeological research at the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Salt also collected a large number of artifacts, such as the head of Ramses II, most of the antiquities Salt collected were purchased by, and can be seen at, The British Museum and the Louvre. In 1825, Salt published an important essay on the deciphering of hieroglyphs, a subject at the forefront of research at the time. Salt passed away in 1827 and was buried in Alexandria. This print is in very good condition overall with some foxing/staining and a few ink stains in margins.

He sympathized with the Lady Huntingdon and George Whitfield faction of Methodism but after 30 years this very controversial work advocating Polygamy - this led to a furore. Madan argues that monogamy can be harmful to women and his descriptions of the suffering of women under monogamy provoked charges of blasphemy. The work was in fact an important argument in the evolution of the legal rights of women for which the author had to resign his living and retire into private life. Scarce and rare first edition of a controversial book. 2 volumes.
