        Triumph of Britannia]

1780 - Engraving. Unfinished working proof. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on all sides. Some creases in image. Image size: 15 1/8 x 20 ½ inches. An extremely rare working proof of James Fittler's striking engraving of Britannia. James Fittler was a skilled etcher and engraver, who established a reputation as an exceptional marine engraver. His oeuvre included portraits and book illustrations but he was best known for his appealing marine scenes. Trained at the Royal Academy schools, Fittler became an associate in 1800. He was a regular exhibitor at the Academy and was appointed "Marine Engraver" to George III. This stunning image of Britannia is an excellent example of his skill and a fascinating glimpse of the etching process. This intriguing print shows a unique step in the printmaking process before an image is ready for publication. Before the image is completed the engraver has printed a trial impression to view this stage of the engraved plate. It is incredibly rare to find prints in this unfinished experimental stage. Impressions which were pulled as working proofs are unique and were almost never duplicated Dictionary of National Biography ; Benezit, Dictionnaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , Vol. 5, p. 492.         des Carl Wilhelm Gödicke: "Carl Wi[l]helm Gödicke widmete dieses Buch seinen Gönnern, Freunden und Freundinnen.

Volume II has scattered foxing a nd some tanning in text. In all, VG internally, text unworn and unmarked, with untrimmed edges. >> Holbach's most famous book. "The third and properly philosophical stage of Holbach's output began in 1770 with the Système de la nature. This first-and only-example in the Enlightenment of a comprehensive, unmitigated defense of atheistic materialism was the culmination of a whole trend of ideas already expressed in varying degrees by La Mettrie, Helvétius, Diderot, and others. It caused much consternation in France, not only among spokesmen for the official faith but among the deistic philosophes as well.Système de la nature.defines man as a product entirely of nature, subject to the laws governing the physical universe, which, in turn, constitutes the whole of reality. The soul, or spiritual substance, is an illusion; the moral and intellectual attributes of man are simply his organic machine considered in certain of its special, less visible operations. Since sensibility is a primary function of the animal organism, all our higher faculties are derived ultimately from the different forms that sensation takes" - Encyclopedia of Philosophy IV , pp 49-51. "Holbach's influence was perhaps never very great, but the confident dogmatism, and the comprehensiveness of the Système de la nature, which even provoked Voltaire to reply in defense of religion, have ensured its survival as the bible of materialism." - PMM 215.         A dictionary, Persian, Arabic, and English. To which is prefixed a dissertation on the languages, literature, and manners of Eastern nations.

Oxford, printed at the Clarendon Press, sold by J. Murray and D. Price, 1777-1780. - Folio (275 x 407 mm). 2 vols. (4), XLVIII, (16) pp. 2144 (but: 2136: skipping 441-448) cols. (4) pp., XX cols., (6) pp., 2286 cols. 19th century English calf. First edition of the first Persian-Arabic-English dictionary, edited by the orientalist Sir John Richardson (1740/41-1795). The first volume includes a dissertation on the languages, literature and manners of Eastern nations. ''An excellent work. As the first vol. or Persian, Arabic and English part was published separately, many more copies were sold than of the second or English, Persian, and Arabic. A few broken sets of the first volume being left, the booksellers were led to reprint several deficient sheets, and so with the copies left on hand of the second vol. they made up some perfect sets. But these are easily known from the original'' (Clarke), as they are printed in London in 1800. - "On 12 November 1767 [Richardson] was proposed for the Society of Antiquaries of London as of Furnival's Inn. In London he pursued both the law and the study of Arabic and Persian. In his oriental interests Richardson was much influenced by another young man, William Jones, who was already coming to be regarded as a prodigy of learning in Asian languages. With the growth of British territorial power in India the potential market for a Persian dictionary had aroused the interest of London publishers and by 1770 Jones and Richardson were working on a new version of Franciscus Meninski's 'Thesaurus linguarum orientalium', first published in 1680-87. Progress was very slow, and Jones withdrew to concentrate on his legal career, leaving the field to Richardson. Thanks to his 'ingenuity and perseverance' (memorial of A. Hamilton and G. Nicol to East India Company, 6 Feb 1776, BL OIOC, E/1/60, no. 26), an abridged version of the original project eventually appeared in two volumes in 1777 and 1780 as A Dictionary, Persian, Arabic and English. Fundamentally revised by others, notably by Charles Wilkins in 1806 and 1810, the dictionary was to have a long life, but although the company took 150 sets, there were few other subscribers and Richardson got little reward for the huge effort he had expended on it" (Marshall). - Bindings rubbed and worn, inner hinges partly split, endpapers renewed. Some staining and marginal repairs to interior; larger tears to 5 leaves, staining to both titles, ownership inscriptions partly inked out; both titles showing central repaired clipping as well as marginal strenghtening and collector's stamp. A large part of both volumes shows worming to gutter; a few leaves with repairs. Zaunmüller 189. Vater/Jülg 25. Graesse VI, 113. Cf. Brunet IV, 1285 (later ed. only, 1806-1810). Clarke, John. (1806). The Bibliographical Miscellany - Supplement, vol. 1 (London, 1806) pp. 273-274; for Richardson: Marshall, "Richardson, John [styled Sir John Richardson, ninth baronet] (1740/41-1795), orientalist", in: ODNB (online ed.).

THE COMFORTS OF MATRIMONY; OR, LOVE'S LAST SHIFT: CONSISTING OF MATRIMONIAL DIALOGUES BETWEEN PERSONS OF ALL RANKS AND DEGREES, FROM THE PEER TO THE PEASANT; DESCRIBING THE PAINS AND THE PLEASURES CONSEQUENT ON MATRIMONY, AND INCLUDING A THOUSAND INCIDENTS MOST INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING TO EVERY MARRIED PERSON: COMPRIZING MANY PIECES WELL WORTHY THE NOTICE OF THE UNMARRIED OF BOTH SEXES.

London: Printed for Fielding and Walker, 1780. - xv,[9],216pp. 12mo. Later cloth, gilt leather spine label. Bookplate on pastedown, residue of another and old inscription on binder's free endsheet, small paper flaw in three leaves affecting a word on each leaf, scattered light foxing and tanning, else a good copy, bound without the plate noted in the ESTC collation. First (and only 18th century) edition of this scarce collection of sixty-eight dialogues in verse on all aspects of interrelations between the sexes, both within and without the confines of matrimony, accompanied by a substantial preface. Many of the dialogues are equally concerned with exposing the foibles of members of various classes, including the clergy. Titles include: "Between a Man of Rank and his Kept Mistress, who he had seduced from the House of her Father in the Country," "Between an Agent for Matrimonial Concerns, commonly called a Marriage Broker, and his Decoy Duck," "Between a Precise Husband and his Sluttish Wife," "Between a Captain in the African Slave-Trade and his Wife," and "Between a very Old Husband, and his very Young Wife." The publication of this collection under the name "Ned Ward, Jr." was no doubt an attempt to capitalize on the reputation of the actual Edward Ward (1667- 1731), the extremely prolific author of ribald and satirical verse and tracts, including THE PLEASURES OF MATRIMONY (1689, and reprinted often thereafter). ESTC/Online locates eight copies. ESTC T124875.

Paris: 1780. 12mo (149 x 82 mm.). [2] ff., xxxvi, 319, [1] pp. Engraved frontispiece of a gardener in classical setting, by Benoît Louis Prévost, Barbou’s woodcut device on title, woodcut, typographic and engraved head- & tailpieces. Publisher’s list of other works from the Collection d’Auteurs Latins on last page. Printed on pale blue paper (papier bleuté). Fine. Contemporary French gold-tooled red morocco, covers tooled to a dentelle design, smooth spine gilt with flower tools, gilt edges, blue watered silk liners (light scuffing to extremities, faint stain on front cover). Provenance: bookplates of Charles Lormier (oval monogrammed booklabel with motto Vita sina litteris mors est; sale, 7 parts, Paris, 1901-1907); Jules Lemaître (sale, Paris, 18 June 1917, no. 443); Henri Beraldi (sale, part 3, Paris, 18 Dec. 1934, no. 212); Alain de Rothschild.***A bibliophilic copy of an erudite edition, the first with Brotier’s commentary, of Rapin’s influential neo-Latin poem on gardening, first published in 1665. Brotier added a biographical introduction, exhaustive notes, and two long essays, on classical horticulture and on gardens in general, with an index of plant names in Latin and French. Rapin, whose poem is packed with classical allusions, was one of the only modern writers to be included in Joseph-Gérard Barbou’s Collection d’Auteurs Latins, all 68 volumes of which could be purchased (bound in calf) for 395 livres, as advertised on the last page. This copy was evidently highly prized and passed from one eminent bibliophile’s library to the next.

1780 - 1780 Pamphlet Questioning the Church's Right to Raise Tithes in Flanders [Massez, C.]. Examen de la Question, Si les Decimateurs ont l'Intention Fondee en Droit a la Perception de la Dime des Fruits Insolites en Flandre, Tant Ceux, Qui Sont Insolites Parmi Toute la Province, que de Ceux, Qui ne Sont Insolites que pour Quelques Villages en Particulier. Ghent: Chez P.F. Cocquyt, 1780. vi, 84, [2] pp. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in plain wrappers, untrimmed edges, early hand-lettered title to front, fragments of title label to spine. Some soiling and edgewear, later owner bookplate to verso of front wrapper. Some toning, light soiling to title page, internally clean. * Only edition located. Massez wishes to limit the rights of the church to raise tithes in Flanders. He notes that "God himself established tithes for the Jewish people, where it was part of the dividing-up of the lands, which God himself ordered: [however] amongst the Christian nations, it is men who have ordered this division, men have also introduced tithes there; thus [such a tax] depends on the civil law of each nation" (iii-iv). Massez discusses statutes from 1520 and 1530 onward and disputes their interpretation by Zeger Bernhard van Espen [1646-1728], the distinguished Flemish canon lawyer. OCLC locates 8 copies, 2 in North American law libraries (Columbia, UC-Berkeley). Not in the British Museum Catalogue. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Batt. Piranesi

1780. |~||~|WITH THREE ADDITIONS IN PIRANESI'S HAND PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista. Catalogo delle Opere Date Finora alla Luce da Gio. Battista Piranesi. Etching on laid paper. Printed on lower center of upper sheet: "Si vendono presso il medisimo Autore nel palazzo del Conte Tomati a Strada Felice, vicino alla Trinita de' Monti." Sheet size: 553 x 425 mm. Etched image: 395 x 295 mm. Professionally matted and framed. Roma: [NP], ca. 1761. This broadsheet has three annotations in brown ink, in Piranesi's own hand: the number "60" before the final printed Vedute del Pantheon paoli tre, the full title of the unlisted Vedute del Tempio della Sibilla in Tivoli, as well as the price of Dell Emissario del Lago Albano "2.50," which was left empty in this state of the printed version. An original, illustrated single etched sheet, Piranesi's Catalogo offered a periodically-updated list of the works engraved and published by Piranesi. Each work is briefly described, and a short statement of the contents and sometimes the price is provided. The physical design comprises advertising text surrounded by a receding entablature of several framed vedute of Rome within a setting of Roman antiquities. Piranesi's Catalogo remains an intriguing association item that was reissued by Piranesi throughout his career. This is the second state of the Catalogo according to Hind, with vedute listed up to 60. Wilton-Ely calls it the first state, supplying a reproduction of the same impression as our printed version. However, recent research by Andrew Robison has identified up to 31 individual states, this impression matches the sixth state from his list. Advertised on this sheet are the: Antichita Romanae, Carceri D'Invenzione, Architetture Diverse, Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de' Romani, etc. For the Vedute di Roma a full list of the individual etchings is given in rough chronological order. Since the vedute were executed over a number of years, succeeding states of the Catalogo contain ever-increasing numbers of etchings under the Vedute di Roma heading. Overall, a nice example of this appealing and now increasingly rare Piranesi item. Robison VI of 31. Hind, p. 6, #2 of 13. Wilton-Ely, Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchings, I, A. (p. 14) and reproduction, p. 15. Ficacci, Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchings (Cologne: Taschen, 2000), p. 52, who cites 25 separate states or printings of the Catalogo.

Ca. 1780. Copper engraving ca. 19x31 cm (7 ½ x 12 ¼ in). Margins slightly trimmed, otherwise a very good bright engraving. An attractive copper engraved view of the Berlin Palace (Berliner Schloss), which was constructed in the 15-18th centuries, and served as a winter residence of the Prussian kings and German emperors. The view shows a busy square in front of the palace, full of pedestrians, carriages and street vendors; a glimpse of the Spree River is seen on the right. The view was apparently engraved by Johann David Schleuen, a prolific master, court engraver, known for his plans and views of Berlin. Berlin Palace was heavily damaged during the Allies' bombardment of Berlin in February 1945 and was demolished in 1950. Work on the palace reconstruction started in 2013; the completion is expected in 2018-2019.
