New York, 1780. unbound. 4 pages, each two-page spread measuring 9 x 14.5 inches, New York, June 27, 1780. Fine content espionage war-date letter addressed to "Esteemed Friend," discussing the breakdown in diplomatic relations between Great Britain and France with a mention of Butler's Rangers and other intelligence. In part: "...At the Court of St. James, the 17th of April 1780 the King's majesty in council...since the commencement of the war in which Great Britain is engaged...by the unprovoked aggression of France and Spain, repeated memorials have been presented by His Majesty's ambassador to the States General of the United Provinces...the above is copied from a paper enclosed to Franklin by your bother who says a convoy was expected to be appointed in a few days from the sailing of this packet. It appears that no fleet has sailed from Brest nor any apprehension of one here..." Robinson (who is mistaken in his assumption) is referring to the anticipated French fleet which would carry the force of Rochambeau' to Newport. Very good(+) condition.         Storia dell'America. Traduzione dall'Inglese.

Candido esemplare a pieni margini e in barbe, impresso su carta forte. Una delle prime edizioni italiane, splendidamente impressa, di una delle più cospicue opere storiografiche del Robertson, la "History of the Discovery and Settlement of America" (1777), forse il più importante studio settecentesco sulle vicende storiche del Centro e del Sud America. "Its vivid descriptions and philosophical disquisitions on aboriginal society captivated the literary world, while the outbreak of the American war lent the book pertinent public interest and rendered it more popular than either of its predecessors. Keats, who read it with enthusiasm many years after, owed to it the suggestion of his famous simile of 'Cortez and his men'" (Dictionary of National Biography). L'opera, fondata su un giudizio sostanzialmente positivo in merito alla colonizzazione spagnola dell'America Centrale e Meridionale, fu elogiata al suo apparire dalla Edinburgh Review come "abounding in the finest descriptions, the most pleasing delineations of character, the most dignified and judicious mixture of reflections. the full flow of his narration. will render his works immortal in the hands of the bulk of mankind". Un giudizio entusiastico fu espresso anche da Walpole, sorpreso che un uomo come Robertson avesse potuto comporre "what all the world now allows to be the best modern history" e potesse scrivere "in the purest English and with as much seeming knowledge of men and courts as if he had passed all his life in important embassies." The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V", "Historical Disquisition concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India", "View of the Progress of the Society in Europe from the Subversion of Roman Empire to the beginning of the sixteenth Century".         Victualling Board Document Signed by Jonas Hanway, Joah Bates and John Slade, ordering a payment to William Wilkinson, owner of the Three Sisters Victualler, which had been chartered 27 December 1779 'to carry Provisions for the use of His Majesty's Ships on the West Indies'].

London 1780 - London: Victualling Office, 15 November 1780. Folio (ca. 30,5x20 cm). 2 pp. Brown ink in secretarial hand on 'R. Williams' laid paper, numbered and docketed on verso. Signed 'Bates', 'Jonas Hanway', 'J. Slade'. Fold marks, slightly trimmed on the upper and lower margins, otherwise a very good document. Interesting document illustrating the posterior career of a renowned British traveller Jonas Hanway. He is most famous for his travel to Persia and Russia in 1743-45 which he undertook in order "to sell English broadcloth for Persian silk and to evaluate the potential of trade with Persia, then ruled by the last great steppe conqueror, Shah Nadir Kuli Khan (1688-1747). [.] Hanway was robbed on the way to Persia, by the rebellious Khars on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea and was rescued by merchant colleagues. [.] He was later partially compensated by Nadir Shah, who desired cordial relations with the British in order to enlist British artisans to construct a Persian navy for the Caspian. [.] In 1753 he published the description of his adventures "An Historical Account of the British Trade over the Caspian Sea" (4 vols., 1753), the most original entertaining of all his books" (Oxford DNB). Our document relates to Hanway's activities as the chairman of the Marine Society (which he founded in 1756) and the Commissioner for victualling the British navy, the latter post he held for almost 20 years (1762-1783). The official paper of the Victualling Board orders to pay to a certain Wilkinson, the owner of a ship engaged in supplying British ships at the Caribbean Theatre of the American War of Independence (1775-1783). The document is signed by two other members of the board, Joah Bates (ca. 1741-1799) and John Slade (d. 1801).

THE COMFORTS OF MATRIMONY; OR, LOVE'S LAST SHIFT: CONSISTING OF MATRIMONIAL DIALOGUES BETWEEN PERSONS OF ALL RANKS AND DEGREES, FROM THE PEER TO THE PEASANT; DESCRIBING THE PAINS AND THE PLEASURES CONSEQUENT ON MATRIMONY, AND INCLUDING A THOUSAND INCIDENTS MOST INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING TO EVERY MARRIED PERSON: COMPRIZING MANY PIECES WELL WORTHY THE NOTICE OF THE UNMARRIED OF BOTH SEXES

London: Printed for Fielding and Walker, 1780.. xv,[9],216pp. 12mo. Later cloth, gilt leather spine label. Bookplate on pastedown, residue of another and old inscription on binder's free endsheet, small paper flaw in three leaves affecting a word on each leaf, scattered light foxing and tanning, else a good copy, bound without the plate noted in the ESTC collation. First (and only 18th century) edition of this scarce collection of sixty-eight dialogues in verse on all aspects of interrelations between the sexes, both within and without the confines of matrimony, accompanied by a substantial preface. Many of the dialogues are equally concerned with exposing the foibles of members of various classes, including the clergy. Titles include: "Between a Man of Rank and his Kept Mistress, who he had seduced from the House of her Father in the Country," "Between an Agent for Matrimonial Concerns, commonly called a Marriage Broker, and his Decoy Duck," "Between a Precise Husband and his Sluttish Wife," "Between a Captain in the African Slave-Trade and his Wife," and "Between a very Old Husband, and his very Young Wife." The publication of this collection under the name "Ned Ward, Jr." was no doubt an attempt to capitalize on the reputation of the actual Edward Ward (1667- 1731), the extremely prolific author of ribald and satirical verse and tracts, including THE PLEASURES OF MATRIMONY (1689, and reprinted often thereafter). ESTC/Online locates eight copies. ESTC T124875.

Hanover, 1780. Hogrewe, J. L. Beschreibung der in England seit 1759 angelegten, und jetzt grosstenteils vollendeten schiffbaren Kanale, zur inneren Gemeinschaft der vornehmsten Handelsstadte. . . . 4to. [12], iv, [2], 164pp. 10 folding engraved plates. Hannover: M. Pockwitz, 1780. 238 x 198 mm. Original boards, later marbled paper spine, worn. One or two minor stains, otherwise a very good copy. Ownership inscription and library stamps on title and front free endpaper; bookplate of the Bibliothecae Comitatus Simighiensis. First Edition of the first history of English canals. Hogrewe, an engineer and cartographer in the Hanoverian army, made two journeys to England, about ten years before the work appeared, at the behest of the Elector of Hanover, George III of England. He saw virtually every major canal, including the Bridgewater, Trent & Mersey, Leeds & Liverpool, Oxford, Staffordshire & Worcestershire, and Coventry as well as the Thames navigation. The book was compiled from the notes he made and describes locks (the Bingley five rise), aqueducts (Barton), weirs (Brindley's circular weirs on the Staffs & Worcs), feeders (the terminal basin on the Bridgewater at Castlefields, tunnels (at Fenny Compton), sluices (on the Witham at Boston) etc, all charmingly illustrated from his drawings. In order to broaden the scope of the work, Hogrewe included a survey of canals in Europe, China, Russia and the ancient world drawn from several authorities, notably Belidor.

Elegy on Captain Cook. To which is added, An Ode to the Sun

London: J. Dodsley, 1780. Small quarto, 23 pp., mildly foxed, a good copy in marbled wrappers. 'With piercing shrieks bewail thy Hero's doom!'. Rare: second edition of Seward's famous tribute, published the same year as the first edition, and 'one of the most influential odes on Captain Cook' (Forbes). Numerous footnotes refer to events on the voyages, including mentions of kangaroos, surf, increasing modesty in Tahitian women, New Zealand hemp, the islanders' morais, and so on.There were to be very many editions and anthology appearances of Seward's Ode, showing that this - the first of many literary tributes - was quite a significant monument to the great man. Holmes quotes the Gentleman's Magazine (September, 1780, p. 432): 'With the assistance of the Muses, she has raised a trophy worthy of the memory of one of the greatest men this or any age or nation has produced.'Later critics have not been so generous. Holmes himself states that the modern reader is likely to find '238 lines of rather turgid verse'. Seward's sympathies for Cook's widow, however, are eloquently and poignantly expressed: "Go, wretched Mourner!-weep thy griefs to rest!" (p. 18).Seward (1747-1809), the "Swan of Lichfield," produced so many poetic elegies and odes that it seemed impossible that anyone important could die during her lifetime without being memorialized. In a vein similar to the wag who remarked that Lydia Sigourney, "The Sweet Singer of Hartford," had added "a new terror to death" by her poetic eulogies, Scott remarked that he could not ignore Sewell for fear of "my death being prematurely announced by a sonnet or an elegy" (DNB XVII, p. 1218).

He sympathized with the Lady Huntingdon and George Whitfield faction of Methodism but after 30 years this very controversial work advocating Polygamy - this led to a furore. Madan argues that monogamy can be harmful to women and his descriptions of the suffering of women under monogamy provoked charges of blasphemy. The work was in fact an important argument in the evolution of the legal rights of women for which the author had to resign his living and retire into private life. Scarce and rare first edition of a controversial book.

One of the very first books to draw on the Commentaries, Laws Concerning the Election is a landmark in the history of its reception by the English bar. It is also a remarkably thorough work that considers causes determined by parliamentary committee and the House of Commons and the laws of England, Scotland and Wales from 1382 to 1780.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM RICHARD VARICK TO DIRCK ROMEYN, CONCERNING THE BUSINESS OF THE NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATURE].

Albany. March 28, 1780. - 3pp., docketed on verso. Folio. Old fold lines. Light soiling. Silked. Good. Letter written by Col. Richard Varick to his friend Rev. Dirck Romeyn, discussing news of the New York State Legislature at Albany. Varick (1753-1831) was studying law at the outbreak of the Revolution and subsequently served in the Continental Army. At this point in his career, Varick's commission as one of General Schuyler's officers had not been renewed and he had just left his father's house in Hackensack where he was pondering the renewal of his law career. He visited Albany to observe the legislature before taking the post of inspector general at West Point. Dick Romeyn (1744-1804), minister of the Reformed Church in Hackensack and later founder of Union College, was staying at the home of Varick's father, where he had just endured a British attack, barely escaping by hiding himself and others in the attic. Varick writes, in part: "As the person I write by is to go off this morning, I shall barely take time to give you a little sketch of the business done by our legislature this session, which will break up to now. Soon after my learning how many of the numbers of the Upper House had got it in their noodles that they had a right & it was exped[ient] to declare Vermont an independent state (as Congress had not obliged on the subject) & to settle a line of jurisdiction between us." The Governor, however, intervened, pointing out that such a resolution was the business of the Congress and if they proceeded he would "prorogue the House. The message was received with a degree of chagrin by some & pleasure by others." Varick also reports that the legislature has passed a law to raise two regiments, among other laws. He closes by informing his friend that he plans "to leave in May. I cannot afford to live here nor can I get land money to defray the enormous expenses of 4 dollars per meal for myself and horse. . I can get books. I shall go to Kingston in May. Of this I have some small hopes yet. I have no idea of remaining in lbany at a monstrous expense. . I hope in five days to write you further. In the mean time let me congratulate you on your escape from the hands of your enemies a few weeks since & for the signal interposition of heaven in disappointing the miscreant wretches in the base designs." Varick went on, later in 1780, to become the chief aide to Benedict Arnold at West Point. As such, he came under considerable suspicion when Arnold's treason was discovered in September, 1780. He was completely exonerated, and went on to be an aide to Washington and a prominent New York politico, including a stint as Mayor of New York which got a street named after him.

Esemplare ben conservato.
