John Adams Repeats Good Battle News, Notes Capture of 55 British Ships

Amsterdam 1780 - Autograph Letter Signed, to William Churchill Houston, Amsterdam, September 17, 1780. 2 pp., with integral blank with recipient's docket, 7 1/2 x 9 in. "You will not mistake this for a Promise or an Hope of Peace. This cannot be. The Heads of a King and Ministers is at Stake."John Adams, having heard just the day before that his fundraising trip to the Netherlands had become official, was grateful for a letter with good news to counter prevailing "unfavourable impressions" in Europe about the war. David McCullough's biography of Adams references the arrival of Francis Dana, who brought Adams the news along with William Churchill Houston's letter. Here, he responds to Houston, a professor, lawyer, politician, and patriot leader from New Jersey. Among the good news, he tells Houston that he has just seen General Nathanael Greene's report of Baron von Knyphausen's defeat at Springfield, New Jersey, and reports his own news on the capture of 55 ships by a combined French and Spanish fleet which has "cast down the English Cause to such a degree, as to put them upon the compassionate List, even with some who detest their Tyranny." Transcript Amsterdam Septr. 17. 1780SirLast night Mr. Dana[1] arrived here, from Paris and brought me your Favour of the 11. of July. You cannot imagine, Sir how much Pleasure, this Letter gave me. I shall make a good Use of this and every other authentic Information, in order to prevent the unfavourable Impressions, you are aware of. It has been my greatest Affliction Since I have been in Europe that I have had so seldom Letters from my friends, or Intelligence from America of any Kind. That Business which is every Bodeys, is never done. Most of the Letters I receive tell me, "you will be so fully informed, both officially, and by your other Friends, that I shall not trouble you with public Affairs." And thus it is that I learn, nothing. My Friend Lovel,[2] indeed remembers me, now and then, and considering his indefatigable Labours in other Things, is very good. Heaven reward him for his Virtues, Exertions and sufferings! And Earth too Say I!General Greens[3] Report, of Kniphausens[4] Exploit is much admired in Europe. Yet I am almost wicked enough to wish that even my friend Green had been beaten, because his defeat would have insured the Captivity of Kniphausen and all his Banditti. The late Accounts from America, from all Quarters, have had a good Effect in Europe. And the Capture of 55 ships at once by the combined Fleets of France and Spain, with the Captures by Don Barcelo[5] and that of the Quebec Fleet, have cast down the English Cause to such a degree, as to put them upon the compassionate List, even with some who detest their Tyranny. You will not mistake this for a Promise or an Hope of Peace. This cannot be. The Heads of a King and Ministers is at Stake, in the negotiation for Peace, at least they Suspect so. The new Parliament, will not alter the System, unless it should make it more insidious. As to Money, I can promise nothing but my Utmost Exertions to procure it. It is lucky that I had been here 4 or 5 Weeks before my Commission arrived, because I have had an opportunity to reconnoitre the Country.Mr. Searle[6], shall have every Attention and Assistance, from me that may be in my Power.I most earnestly request the Continuance of your Correspondence, and remain, with the highest Esteem, sir your very humble servant John AdamsHistorical BackgroundAfter having been relieved of duties as minister to Versailles, John Adams travelled to Holland as a private citizen on a mission to secure war financing. On September 16, 1780, Francis Dana arrived in Amsterdam from Paris with news that Congress had approved the mission. Dana also bore this letter from William Churchill Houston, sent from Philadelphia on July 11, 1780, noting some long-awaited good news on the military front.[7] On September 17, Adams responded with the letter offered here. Dana had been sent . (See website for full description)

Tabulae regni animalis, omnes VI classes animalium comprehendentes. Tabellen des Thierreichs. Regni animalis classis II Avium ordines I-VI

Augsburg, Kaiserlich Franzische Akademische Handlung [1780-1786]. Folio (52 x 36 cm). 24 contemporary hand-coloured copper engravings and 24 black & white copper engravings. Beautiful, contemporary style, pastiche binding, half calf over paper boards. Richly gilt decorated spine with seven raised bands; gilt ornaments and title.l Exceedingly rare, especially in this double suite, including contemporarily hand-coloured plates. This is the complete set of ornithological plates. These bird plates bear the printed signature of Gottlieb Friedrich Riedel in the margin. He was born in 1724 in Dresden, Germany and died in 1784 in Augsburg, Germany. He was a well-respected and accomplished porcelain painter and the teacher of Friedrich Kirschner in the Ludwigsburg-based porcelain factory, where he worked from 1770 as a painter of birds, insects and flowers. Friedrich Kirschner was born in about 1748 in Bayreuth, Germany, and died in Augsburg, Germany, in 1788. Complete copies of this work are extremely rare; globaly there is only one known copy in the UB in Augsburg. Other libraries - such as the UB Tübingen, Frankfurt, Staatsbibliothek München, UB Strasbourg, UB Basel, Amsterdam, ?-NB, Library of the British Museum (NH) and the French National Library - only possess incomplete copies. Coloured copies are almost unheard of; the fish and amphibian section of the coloured version has only come to auction once, in 1964; the coloured birds, apparently, have never been auctioned. No known coloured sections exist in any institutional library. Some staining or soiling to plate margins and two marginal paper restorations. The plates with a nice strong impression and the contemporary colouring very well-executed and vivid. Ludwig, p. 171, p. 287 and p. 342-43; Nissen IVB, 781; ZBI, 3421; Schlenker, 288.1; Thieme & Becker, vol. 20, p. 379 and vol. 28, pp. 316-317; Wood, p. 538.

- Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren.

Amsterdam, heirs of David Klippink, 1780.. 8vo. 2 parts in 1 vol. XXVI, 182 pp. (4), 190 pp. With engr. frontispiece and including both half-titles. Contemp. half calf with gilt title and emblems on spine. Portrait frontispiece of "Mohammed, son of Abdullah, of the tribe of Koreis, the descendant of Ishmael".. Very rare sole edition of this biography of Mohammed and history of the Arab people, painting a picture of him as a strong leader who brought the Arab tribes out of barbarity and into modern civilization. A distinct product of the European Enlightenment - in which ingrained attitudes towards religious were suddenly thrown into question - the present work marks a fascinating turning point in European views of the Prophet, adopting the rather admiring tone which would be echoed throughout 19th century biographies. - "Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the first major re-assessments of Muhammad came from a Dutchman, Johan Nomsz; after all, historians nowadays agree that it was in the relatively tolerant culture of the Northern Netherlands that the Enlightenment was actually born and came to fruition. In 1780, Nomsz published Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren, 'Muhammad, or the Reform of the Arabs'. The text is part prose play, part historical analysis. In it, Nomsz sketches the rise of Islam through the life of Muhammad as he had been able to reconstruct it from a number of scholarly works that had become available in Europe. His Muhammad is both a true prophet and a great statesman" (Rietbergen, Europe: A Cultural History, p. 143). In his preface, Nomsz insists on the name 'Mohammed' rather than the 'Mahomet' favored by other, misinformed European observers. - Half-title of Part 1 with closed repaired tear, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh. Very rare. OCLC shows just a handful of copies outside the Netherlands - and just one in American institutional libraries, at Yale. - OCLC 898979382.

Fine. Chez Pissot, à Amsterdam & se trouve à Paris 1780, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in-12 (9,5x17cm), reliés. - First edition of the translation and abstract conducted by the Marquis of Paulmy Contant and Orville. Copy the arms of Rohan Chabot, certainly from the date of publishing, Louis-Antoine de Rohan-Chabot said the chevalier de Rohan. 2 twins and two sculpin crowned in the corners. We know that the Cardinal de Rohan library (infamous!) It was twins on the way back iron. Binding full fair calf ice period. Back smooth decorated. Part of title and volume number in brown leather. 3 slashes on upper cover of Volume II without consequence. Nice copy. The sun knight is a translation of the Spanish novel of chivalry Diego Orthunez of Calahorra, the first part was published in 1555, the suites appeared later, second and third parts are not of the author. Interesting preface to the Marquis de Paulmy, celèbre medievalist at the time, which asserts that the cycle of Amadis is a continuation of the knight of the sun. A table of contents allows to find the chronology of each character. The Marquis de Paulmy and his sidekick Contant d'Orville did not simply translate the knight of the sun, they compiled not only the result of the History of the knight soelil, but also the last 21 novels Amadis, and romance novels by Duverdier, allowing to follow the fate of all the characters of the Spanish romantic chivalry two books. Seems the strangest musical scores introduction and philidor songs and celebrating Grétry chivalry, testimony to the perception of the eighteenth of a romantic chivalry.

The Devil upon Two Sticks. Translated from the Diable Boiteux of M. Le Sage. To which are prefixed Asmodeus's Crutches, a Critical Letter upon the Work; and Dialogues between Two Chimneys of Madrid.

London: Harrison of Paternoster-Row, 1780. - Octavo, pp.xvii; 18-145; [1], blank. Two volumes in one, text printed in two columns, illustrated with four superb hand-coloured plates by Stothard. Bound in full laticed calf, later respine with red morocco title label, gilt ruling to board edges. This edition with Sothard's engravings after designs by Walker is scarce. In excellent condition; faint rubbing to endcaps, a little edgeworn with a loss of gilt detailing in places, corners bumped, colour plates remain vivid. 'The Devil upon Two Sticks', or 'Le Diable Boiteaux' is a satirical fantasy set in Madrid, on the follies and vices of mankind, written by the French comic writer A.R. Le Sage. The story, which deals with the weakness and gullibility of men, follows Asmodeus' journey after being liberated from a bottle in which he was imprisoned by an astrologer. The character of Asmodeus became the model for numerous narratives – including Dickens' Jacob Marley – in which demons provide humans with a magical tour of contemporary life and vice.         Storia dell'America. Traduzione dall'Inglese.

"Its vivid descriptions and philosophical disquisitions on aboriginal society captivated the literary world, while the outbreak of the American war lent the book pertinent public interest and rendered it more popular than either of its predecessors. Keats, who read it with enthusiasm many years after, owed to it the suggestion of his famous simile of 'Cortez and his men'" (Dictionary of National Biography). L'opera, fondata su un giudizio sostanzialmente positivo in merito alla colonizzazione spagnola dell'America Centrale e Meridionale, fu elogiata al suo apparire dalla Edinburgh Review come "abounding in the finest descriptions, the most pleasing delineations of character, the most dignified and judicious mixture of reflections. the full flow of his narration. will render his works immortal in the hands of the bulk of mankind". Un giudizio entusiastico fu espresso anche da Walpole, sorpreso che un uomo come Robertson avesse potuto comporre "what all the world now allows to be the best modern history" e potesse scrivere "in the purest English and with as much seeming knowledge of men and courts as if he had passed all his life in important embassies." The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V", "Historical Disquisition concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India", "View of the Progress of the Society in Europe from the Subversion of Roman Empire to the beginning of the sixteenth Century".       Cesena: Gregorio Biasini, 1780 - 81. First edition. 4 vols., quarto [24x17.5 cm], pp I: [i-ii] iii-vii [1], 1-303 [1, blank], 303-306, 1 folded map, 2 plates, folded chart -- II: [1-2] 3-268, 273-276, 17 plates (5 folded) -- III: [1-2], 3-260, 1 folded map, 1 plate -- IV: [1-2] 3-331 [1, colophon]276, with 17 engravings, some folding. Total map & plate count: 2 folded copper-engraved maps; 20 copper-engraved plates (5 folded); 1 folded letterpress chart (genealogical chart of Mexican kings). Titles and text with wood-engraved ornamentation, head and tail-pieces, initial letters. The engravings are of a very high quality. This is the first complete history of ancient Mexico as far as it was known at that time and was the most complete edition of the work until modern times. Subsequent editions were bowdlerized due to Spanish authorities?' negative reaction to what they considered the author?'s alleged hispanophobia and exaggeration of the value of Mexican culture to a point that Spain appeared to suffer by comparison. Clavigero (1731 - 87) was a native born Mexican (of Spanish stock), proud of his country, and a true Enlightenment scholar. Some typical judgments of his work are: Glass, p. 585: ?"Major, late Enlightenment survey of pre-Hispanic Mexican Indian culture and history. A very influential work, which constituted the most ambitious treatment of its subject since Torquemada. Illustrations include details from such manuscripts as Codex Mendoza... Mention of Codex Cospi is among the earliest published references to that manuscript.?" Griffin 1351n: ?"An eighteenth-century Jesuit?'s reconstruction of native history, principally from Torquemada and other standard sources, with some further data on native life of the colonial period. One of the late writings that reveals the emergence of a sense of local identification and patriotism. A work of exceptional interest from many points of view.?" Stevens, Biblioteca Historica 377: ?"All the other books that have been elaborated since on the same subject, instead of superseding Clavigero?'s, have tended rather to magnify its importance.?" Streeter Sale 194 (London edition). Wilgus, pp. 236-237: ?"A mine of information on archaeology and antiquities of Mexico, and it listed many manuscripts—including Indian picture writing—and documents not only from the Mexican archives but from the Vatican, Italian, and Spanish collections. The author listed thirty Indian and Spanish writers who gave accounts of Mexico, showing that Clavigero was indeed a bibliographer and historiographer of the first rank.?" Winsor II, p. 425.The Italian edition is the true first of Clavigero's fundamental work on Mexican history: he began the work in Spanish, but soon decided to start it again in Italian, and it was completed in its final form in that language. He was expelled with the other Jesuits from Mexico in 1767 and came to reside in Italy, and so it was that the work first saw the light in this Italian translation. The original text in Spanish became lost and was only found in the early 20th century. Bound in a contemporary Italian binding, hand-colored boards over vellum. This is a fine set of this seminal work.

The Devil upon Two Sticks. Translated from the Diable Boiteux of M. Le Sage. To which are prefixed Asmodeus's Crutches, a Critical Letter upon the Work; and Dialogues between Two Chimneys of Madrid

London: Harrison of Paternoster-Row, 1780., 1780. Octavo, pp.xvii; 18-145; [1], blank. LES EPOQUES DE LA NATURE TOME PREMIER,

DE L'IMPRIMERIE ROYALE, PARIS 1780 - In 16. Dim. 17,5x11 cm. Pp. (4)+246+VI. All'interno sono presenti sei planches. Tagli marmorizzati. In ottime condizioni. Legatura in ottime condizioni. Scarce first separate edition of 1780 of the most important work by the naturalist George Louis Le Clerc Conte di Buffon (1707-1788) which signed the beginning of geological history. Buffon was an exponent of the scientific movement connected to illuminism and his theories inspired the next generations of naturalists in particular Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. In the work Buffon elaborates important theories, then condemned by Sorbonne University. He proposes a new chronology of the history of earth divided into seven epochs with an age of 75.000 years with hypothesis about appereance of first human beings, their migration before separation of continents and their differentiation in function of environment. The work, appeared for the first time in 1778 as tome V of supplement to "Histoire Naturellle", was made up oof two tomes, unfortunately we only have the first tome. Inside there are six planches. Marbled external edges of pages. In very good conditions. Full leather cover of XIX century with golden title and decorations in the spine in very good general conditions slightly worn in the edges and spine. Binding in very good conditions. Inside pages are in very good conditions with occasional foxings.
