Etat présent des Indes Hollandaises, contenant une Peintre vraie et Fidelle du Gouvernement, de l'Administration, et la Conduite des Hollandais dans les Indes-Orientales

Batavia (but Amsterdam?): n.p., circa, 1780. Octavo, 96pp., booksellers label to inner front cover, engraved vignette on the title; uncut in contemporary patterned wrappers fashioned from a booksellers catalogue, handwritten title-label to upper cover, spine repaired, title page and A2 neatly remounted, very good. A remarkable eighteenth century pamphlet detailing the political, economic and military conditions in the Dutch East Indies. Although anonymous, the work was written by an evidently well-informed author who provides sensitive strategic insights into the weakness of Dutch interests in the region, stressing their vulnerability to British and French aggression.Translated from a simultaneously issued Dutch edition (Nederlandisch India), the report was written either shortly before or at the beginning of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784). The unknown author's frank and candid discussion of the weaknesses of the VOC generally and Batavia particularly, has led to much speculation about the intentions of the work. 'The economy was precarious, persons in both Europe and Southeast Asia were Jekyll and Hyde. There were those who tried to warn of VOC troubles but, when corruption reaches the highest places and when statistical cooperation can be secured between production and sales, what to do! The Heeren XVII knew less than they should have known about affairs abroad. They "regulated" to a degree only, whereas the truth of minimal salaried men bringing fabulous fortunes home... was easily and constantly very visible in Asia to anybody who looked. This author was writing from a position of prominence; he too had money; he was equally fluent in Dutch and French: he tried to warn. Where did he print? And - what was his name?' (Smith Diehl, Printers and Printing in the East Indies to 1850: Batavia, 1990, p.151-152).The susceptibility of Batavia to a British or French attack is a central concern and in compelling detail the author outlines the weakness of the various garrisons defending the VOC administrative capital. '[Batavia] un château qui tombe entièrement en ruine... J'oserais assurer que trois ou quatre vaisseaux Anglais, Français ou de route autre nation, emporteraient Batavia dans deux ou trois jours.' It is unclear then why the report was immediately rendered into French (as well as English), but these translations did raise the hackles of contemporary commentators in London particularly: was the work in fact some sort of ruse de guerre? The volume is bound in a bookseller's catalogue (from which we can suppose a publishing date sometime around 1780) which has been overprinted in red ink in a striking diamond pattern. The catalogue likely belonged to Geneva bookseller Jean François Bassompierre, whose ticket is pasted down on the inside cover. The title page notes printing in Batavia, although Landwehr suggests very plausibly that it may in fact be Amsterdam.

A View of Quebec from the South East

London: Published by J.F.W. Des Barres in 'The Atlantic Neptune', 1780. Etching with aquatint printed in sepia. On laid paper with `J Bates' watermark and `JB' countermark. Short marginal tears. A very fine full-sheet view of Quebec. This image is one of the most important of all the views included in Des Barres masterpiece: 'The Atlantic Neptune'. Spendlove writes that the 'large prints from The Atlantic Neptune are among the finest and most beautiful pictures of Canada ever made... Des Barres was an artist of great ability... [and his] delineation of ships was particularly effective, and one could hardly find anything finer' (The Face of Early Canada, pp. 18-19). The present view is apparently taken from on board a ship on the St. Lawrence River, looking northwest towards the citadel of Quebec. In the foreground are two finely-observed merchant ships, their flags and pennants flying in the wind.Des Barres, of Swiss-Huguenot extraction, studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before continuing on to the Royal Military College at Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the future legendary explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. From 1762, Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, while his colleague, Samuel Holland charted the New England coast. He also managed to gain access to some surveys of the American South, Cuba and Jamaica. In 1774, Des Barres returned to England where he began work on The Neptune. His dedication to the project was so strong, that often at his own expense, he continually updated and added new charts and views up until 1784. That year he returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, and living to the advanced age of 103.The Atlantic Neptune, the most celebrated sea atlas, contained the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America. Des Barres's synergy of great empirical accuracy with the peerless artistic virtue of his aquatint views, created a work that "has been described as the most splendid collection of charts, plates and views ever published" (National Maritime Museum Catalogue). Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was charged with this Herculean task, publishing the first volume in London in 1775, which was soon followed by three further volumes. Des Barres's monumental endeavor eventually featured over two-hundred charts and views, many being found in several states. Des Barres's charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, and in many cases remained the most authoritative maps of the regions covered for several decades.National Maritime Museum (Greenwich), Henry Newton Stevens Collection, 125B; Cf. Des Barres and The Atlantic Neptune"; pp. 18-22; Debard, "The Family Origins of Joseph Fredericks Wallet DesBarres: A Riddle Finally Solved", Nova Scotia Historical Review, Vol 14, No. 2 (1994), p.15.

Piatti cartonati. Candido esemplare a pieni margini e in barbe, impresso su carta forte. Una delle prime edizioni italiane, splendidamente impressa, di una delle più cospicue opere storiografiche del Robertson, la "History of the Discovery and Settlement of America" (1777), forse il più importante studio settecentesco sulle vicende storiche del Centro e del Sud America. "Its vivid descriptions and philosophical disquisitions on aboriginal society captivated the literary world, while the outbreak of the American war lent the book pertinent public interest and rendered it more popular than either of its predecessors. Keats, who read it with enthusiasm many years after, owed to it the suggestion of his famous simile of 'Cortez and his men'" (Dictionary of National Biography). L'opera, fondata su un giudizio sostanzialmente positivo in merito alla colonizzazione spagnola dell'America Centrale e Meridionale, fu elogiata al suo apparire dalla Edinburgh Review come "abounding in the finest descriptions, the most pleasing delineations of character, the most dignified and judicious mixture of reflections. the full flow of his narration. will render his works immortal in the hands of the bulk of mankind". Un giudizio entusiastico fu espresso anche da Walpole, sorpreso che un uomo come Robertson avesse potuto comporre "what all the world now allows to be the best modern history" e potesse scrivere "in the purest English and with as much seeming knowledge of men and courts as if he had passed all his life in important embassies." The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V", "Historical Disquisition concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India", "View of the Progress of the Society in Europe from the Subversion of Roman Empire to the beginning of the sixteenth Century".         Emblems of 1760 & 1780

London by Robt Wilkinson 1st Jan 1780 - Broadside, folio, mezzotint, cut close, printed one side as issued. A Satire on the debilitating effects of years of War (American War) on the populace. The illustration shows a plump ,cheerful and well dressed lady representing 1760, looking across a table at a thin, slovenly dressed and gin soaked lady representing 1780. A note on the internet relating to this print relates it to the question of women's Bedgowns and Manteaus-de-Lit. Exceedingly rare. Not in British Museum Catalogue, but now listed by them as recently purchased. No other copy traced.

Victualling Board Document Signed by Jonas Hanway, Joah Bates and John Slade, ordering a payment to William Wilkinson, owner of the Three Sisters Victualler, which had been chartered 27 December 1779 'to carry Provisions for the use of His Majesty's Ships on the West Indies'].

London 1780 - London: Victualling Office, 15 November 1780. Folio (ca. 30,5x20 cm). 2 pp. Brown ink in secretarial hand on 'R. Williams' laid paper, numbered and docketed on verso. Signed 'Bates', 'Jonas Hanway', 'J. Slade'. Fold marks, slightly trimmed on the upper and lower margins, otherwise a very good document. Interesting document illustrating the posterior career of a renowned British traveller Jonas Hanway. He is most famous for his travel to Persia and Russia in 1743-45 which he undertook in order "to sell English broadcloth for Persian silk and to evaluate the potential of trade with Persia, then ruled by the last great steppe conqueror, Shah Nadir Kuli Khan (1688-1747). [.] Hanway was robbed on the way to Persia, by the rebellious Khars on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea and was rescued by merchant colleagues. [.] He was later partially compensated by Nadir Shah, who desired cordial relations with the British in order to enlist British artisans to construct a Persian navy for the Caspian. [.] In 1753 he published the description of his adventures "An Historical Account of the British Trade over the Caspian Sea" (4 vols., 1753), the most original entertaining of all his books" (Oxford DNB). Our document relates to Hanway's activities as the chairman of the Marine Society (which he founded in 1756) and the Commissioner for victualling the British navy, the latter post he held for almost 20 years (1762-1783). The official paper of the Victualling Board orders to pay to a certain Wilkinson, the owner of a ship engaged in supplying British ships at the Caribbean Theatre of the American War of Independence (1775-1783). The document is signed by two other members of the board, Joah Bates (ca. 1741-1799) and John Slade (d. 1801).

London: Printed for Fielding and Walker, 1780.. xv,[9],216pp. 12mo. Later cloth, gilt leather spine label. Bookplate on pastedown, residue of another and old inscription on binder's free endsheet, small paper flaw in three leaves affecting a word on each leaf, scattered light foxing and tanning, else a good copy, bound without the plate noted in the ESTC collation. First (and only 18th century) edition of this scarce collection of sixty-eight dialogues in verse on all aspects of interrelations between the sexes, both within and without the confines of matrimony, accompanied by a substantial preface. Many of the dialogues are equally concerned with exposing the foibles of members of various classes, including the clergy. Titles include: "Between a Man of Rank and his Kept Mistress, who he had seduced from the House of her Father in the Country," "Between an Agent for Matrimonial Concerns, commonly called a Marriage Broker, and his Decoy Duck," "Between a Precise Husband and his Sluttish Wife," "Between a Captain in the African Slave-Trade and his Wife," and "Between a very Old Husband, and his very Young Wife." The publication of this collection under the name "Ned Ward, Jr." was no doubt an attempt to capitalize on the reputation of the actual Edward Ward (1667- 1731), the extremely prolific author of ribald and satirical verse and tracts, including THE PLEASURES OF MATRIMONY (1689, and reprinted often thereafter). ESTC/Online locates eight copies. ESTC T124875.

Pay Voucher for Revolutionary War Brigadier General Samuel Holton Putnam

[Connecticut: The Committee]. 1780. Partially printed document. Approximately 7.5" x 7". Deckle edge a bit irregular, else very near fine. Dated 16 August 1780. No place, but Connecticut. The document orders the state of Connecticut to pay Brigadier General Samuel H. Parsons, 984 pounds and change. Signed by Finn Wadsworth and Samuel Lyman for "Committee"; and signed in type by "John Lawrence, Esq; Treasurer." Docketed on the reverse by Zedlmon Read(?). Samuel Holden Parsons was an agitator for independence from England, and wrote to Samuel Adams suggesting a congress of the colonies in 1772. He lead a militia regiment at Bunker Hill, was shortly thereafter made a Brigadier General in the Continental Army and fought the British at Battle Hill on Long Island and later at the Battle of White Plains. He commanded West Point in 1778-79, but left to rejoin his command. Upon the discovery, in September 1780 (a couple of weeks after this voucher was issued), of Benedict Arnold's treacherous scheme to surrender West Point to the British, Parsons served on the board of officers which tried Arnold's accomplice, Major John Andre, and sentenced him to death. In civilian life after the war Parsons was appointed Chief Justice of Ohio. A very attractive document. .
