Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren.

Amsterdam, heirs of David Klippink, 1780.. 8vo. 2 parts in 1 vol. XXVI, 182 pp. (4), 190 pp. With engr. frontispiece and including both half-titles. Contemp. half calf with gilt title and emblems on spine. Portrait frontispiece of "Mohammed, son of Abdullah, of the tribe of Koreis, the descendant of Ishmael".. Very rare sole edition of this biography of Mohammed and history of the Arab people, painting a picture of him as a strong leader who brought the Arab tribes out of barbarity and into modern civilization. A distinct product of the European Enlightenment - in which ingrained attitudes towards religious were suddenly thrown into question - the present work marks a fascinating turning point in European views of the Prophet, adopting the rather admiring tone which would be echoed throughout 19th century biographies. - "Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the first major re-assessments of Muhammad came from a Dutchman, Johan Nomsz; after all, historians nowadays agree that it was in the relatively tolerant culture of the Northern Netherlands that the Enlightenment was actually born and came to fruition. In 1780, Nomsz published Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren, 'Muhammad, or the Reform of the Arabs'. The text is part prose play, part historical analysis. In it, Nomsz sketches the rise of Islam through the life of Muhammad as he had been able to reconstruct it from a number of scholarly works that had become available in Europe. His Muhammad is both a true prophet and a great statesman" (Rietbergen, Europe: A Cultural History, p. 143). In his preface, Nomsz insists on the name 'Mohammed' rather than the 'Mahomet' favored by other, misinformed European observers. - Half-title of Part 1 with closed repaired tear, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh. Very rare. OCLC shows just a handful of copies outside the Netherlands - and just one in American institutional libraries, at Yale. - OCLC 898979382.

Fine. Chez Pissot, à Amsterdam & se trouve à Paris 1780, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in-12 (9,5x17cm), reliés. - First edition of the translation and abstract conducted by the Marquis of Paulmy Contant and Orville. Copy the arms of Rohan Chabot, certainly from the date of publishing, Louis-Antoine de Rohan-Chabot said the chevalier de Rohan. 2 twins and two sculpin crowned in the corners. We know that the Cardinal de Rohan library (infamous!) It was twins on the way back iron. Binding full fair calf ice period. Back smooth decorated. Part of title and volume number in brown leather. 3 slashes on upper cover of Volume II without consequence. Nice copy. The sun knight is a translation of the Spanish novel of chivalry Diego Orthunez of Calahorra, the first part was published in 1555, the suites appeared later, second and third parts are not of the author. Interesting preface to the Marquis de Paulmy, celèbre medievalist at the time, which asserts that the cycle of Amadis is a continuation of the knight of the sun. A table of contents allows to find the chronology of each character. The Marquis de Paulmy and his sidekick Contant d'Orville did not simply translate the knight of the sun, they compiled not only the result of the History of the knight soelil, but also the last 21 novels Amadis, and romance novels by Duverdier, allowing to follow the fate of all the characters of the Spanish romantic chivalry two books. Seems the strangest musical scores introduction and philidor songs and celebrating Grétry chivalry, testimony to the perception of the eighteenth of a romantic chivalry.

The Devil upon Two Sticks. Translated from the Diable Boiteux of M. Le Sage. To which are prefixed Asmodeus's Crutches, a Critical Letter upon the Work; and Dialogues between Two Chimneys of Madrid.

London: Harrison of Paternoster-Row, 1780. - Octavo, pp.xvii; 18-145; [1], blank. Two volumes in one, text printed in two columns, illustrated with four superb hand-coloured plates by Stothard. Bound in full laticed calf, later respine with red morocco title label, gilt ruling to board edges. This edition with Sothard's engravings after designs by Walker is scarce. In excellent condition; faint rubbing to endcaps, a little edgeworn with a loss of gilt detailing in places, corners bumped, colour plates remain vivid. 'The Devil upon Two Sticks', or 'Le Diable Boiteaux' is a satirical fantasy set in Madrid, on the follies and vices of mankind, written by the French comic writer A.R. Le Sage. The story, which deals with the weakness and gullibility of men, follows Asmodeus' journey after being liberated from a bottle in which he was imprisoned by an astrologer. The character of Asmodeus became the model for numerous narratives – including Dickens' Jacob Marley – in which demons provide humans with a magical tour of contemporary life and vice.         Storia dell'America. Traduzione dall'Inglese.

"Its vivid descriptions and philosophical disquisitions on aboriginal society captivated the literary world, while the outbreak of the American war lent the book pertinent public interest and rendered it more popular than either of its predecessors. Keats, who read it with enthusiasm many years after, owed to it the suggestion of his famous simile of 'Cortez and his men'" (Dictionary of National Biography). L'opera, fondata su un giudizio sostanzialmente positivo in merito alla colonizzazione spagnola dell'America Centrale e Meridionale, fu elogiata al suo apparire dalla Edinburgh Review come "abounding in the finest descriptions, the most pleasing delineations of character, the most dignified and judicious mixture of reflections. the full flow of his narration. will render his works immortal in the hands of the bulk of mankind". Un giudizio entusiastico fu espresso anche da Walpole, sorpreso che un uomo come Robertson avesse potuto comporre "what all the world now allows to be the best modern history" e potesse scrivere "in the purest English and with as much seeming knowledge of men and courts as if he had passed all his life in important embassies." The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V", "Historical Disquisition concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India", "View of the Progress of the Society in Europe from the Subversion of Roman Empire to the beginning of the sixteenth Century".         Storia antica del Messico

Cesena: Gregorio Biasini, 1780 - 81. First edition. 4 vols., quarto [24x17.5 cm], pp I: [i-ii] iii-vii [1], 1-303 [1, blank], 303-306, 1 folded map, 2 plates, folded chart -- II: [1-2] 3-268, 273-276, 17 plates (5 folded) -- III: [1-2], 3-260, 1 folded map, 1 plate -- IV: [1-2] 3-331 [1, colophon]276, with 17 engravings, some folding. Total map & plate count: 2 folded copper-engraved maps; 20 copper-engraved plates (5 folded); 1 folded letterpress chart (genealogical chart of Mexican kings). Titles and text with wood-engraved ornamentation, head and tail-pieces, initial letters. The engravings are of a very high quality. This is the first complete history of ancient Mexico as far as it was known at that time and was the most complete edition of the work until modern times. Subsequent editions were bowdlerized due to Spanish authorities?' negative reaction to what they considered the author?'s alleged hispanophobia and exaggeration of the value of Mexican culture to a point that Spain appeared to suffer by comparison. Clavigero (1731 - 87) was a native born Mexican (of Spanish stock), proud of his country, and a true Enlightenment scholar. Some typical judgments of his work are: Glass, p. 585: ?"Major, late Enlightenment survey of pre-Hispanic Mexican Indian culture and history. A very influential work, which constituted the most ambitious treatment of its subject since Torquemada. Illustrations include details from such manuscripts as Codex Mendoza... Mention of Codex Cospi is among the earliest published references to that manuscript.?" Griffin 1351n: ?"An eighteenth-century Jesuit?'s reconstruction of native history, principally from Torquemada and other standard sources, with some further data on native life of the colonial period. One of the late writings that reveals the emergence of a sense of local identification and patriotism. A work of exceptional interest from many points of view.?" Stevens, Biblioteca Historica 377: ?"All the other books that have been elaborated since on the same subject, instead of superseding Clavigero?'s, have tended rather to magnify its importance.?" Streeter Sale 194 (London edition). Wilgus, pp. 236-237: ?"A mine of information on archaeology and antiquities of Mexico, and it listed many manuscripts—including Indian picture writing—and documents not only from the Mexican archives but from the Vatican, Italian, and Spanish collections. The author listed thirty Indian and Spanish writers who gave accounts of Mexico, showing that Clavigero was indeed a bibliographer and historiographer of the first rank.?" Winsor II, p. 425.The Italian edition is the true first of Clavigero's fundamental work on Mexican history: he began the work in Spanish, but soon decided to start it again in Italian, and it was completed in its final form in that language. He was expelled with the other Jesuits from Mexico in 1767 and came to reside in Italy, and so it was that the work first saw the light in this Italian translation. The original text in Spanish became lost and was only found in the early 20th century. Bound in a contemporary Italian binding, hand-colored boards over vellum. This is a fine set of this seminal work.

DEN ENGELSMAN OP ZYN UITERSTE / L'ANGLOIS A TOUTE EXTREMITEZ

Lyon. [1780].. Engraving with letterpress text beneath, the whole measuring 9 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches. Mounted at corners to modern heavy paper. Lightly soiled. Trimmed a bit close at top edge, but not into image. Very good. Engraving with printed enumerated text beneath in French and Dutch, satirizing England's condition in the face of Dutch, French, and Spanish support for America during the American Revolution. Behind him is a chamber pot, and to the right is an apothecary wearing a mask and holding a large syringe. Behind him is an American with feathered headdress. In the doorway to the left are doctors and other apothecaries, being fended off by a Frenchman and a Spaniard. To the far right is an open window with ships at anchor. All the images are accompanied by explanatory text.         LES EPOQUES DE LA NATURE TOME PREMIER,

DE L'IMPRIMERIE ROYALE, PARIS 1780 - In 16. Dim. 17,5x11 cm. Pp. (4)+246+VI. All'interno sono presenti sei planches. Tagli marmorizzati. In ottime condizioni. Legatura in ottime condizioni. Scarce first separate edition of 1780 of the most important work by the naturalist George Louis Le Clerc Conte di Buffon (1707-1788) which signed the beginning of geological history. Buffon was an exponent of the scientific movement connected to illuminism and his theories inspired the next generations of naturalists in particular Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. In the work Buffon elaborates important theories, then condemned by Sorbonne University. He proposes a new chronology of the history of earth divided into seven epochs with an age of 75.000 years with hypothesis about appereance of first human beings, their migration before separation of continents and their differentiation in function of environment. The work, appeared for the first time in 1778 as tome V of supplement to "Histoire Naturellle", was made up oof two tomes, unfortunately we only have the first tome. Inside there are six planches. Marbled external edges of pages. In very good conditions. Full leather cover of XIX century with golden title and decorations in the spine in very good general conditions slightly worn in the edges and spine. Binding in very good conditions. Inside pages are in very good conditions with occasional foxings.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM DR. MALACHI TREAT TO MAJOR NICHOLAS FISH, DISCUSSING INDIAN RAIDS IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY].

Albany. June 28, 1780. - 3pp. Quarto. Old fold lines. A few slight separations and small edge tears. Light soiling and foxing. Good. In a blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. A friendly letter written by Dr. Malachi Treat, Physician General of the Northern Department of the Continental Army, to Major Nicholas Fish, in which he mentions Indian raids on settlers in the Mohawk River Valley. Treat was a New York City physician called upon during the American Revolution to serve in the hospitals of the Continental Army. Nicholas Fish, also from New York, served with Treat and Alexander Hamilton, with whom he became good friends. In his letter Treat expresses pleasure that Fish's brigade has arrived safely at West Point; though this may have been the case, it is likely that Fish was already gone from West Point by the time this letter was written, as he was appointed brigade inspector with General James Clinton's brigade, which was sent with Major General John Sullivan's force to fight the Iroquois in the Mohawk Valley in early July 1780. Thus Treat's letter is particularly interesting, as it involves the campaign on which Fish was currently embarking. He writes, in part: "I feel a real pleasure in knowing your brigade is safely arrived at West Point, as the enemy are coming up against you in force; you will now be a match for them, and have a fine opportunity to reconnoiter their position, numbers, and intention, from the various [?] of this celebrated place. The prospects are very intrusive and commanding, take care not to perform the retrograde in their presence, but the [?], or offer them a charte blanche, all and [similar?] of these things will be very affecting to all yr. friends. This Gibraltar of America, and the brave troops that defend it will do honor I make no doubt to the cause they contend for, and have their temples crowned with immortal laurels if occasion offers of showing their pro[w]ess and fortitude. "I expect soon to see you at West Point if nothing turns up to prevent me. Alarms are frequent from the westward, the savages appear here and there in small parties, as forerunners of a larger [force] composed of Tories and Indians who are acoming down, to scatter destruction and horror around them. The inhabitants on the Mohock [sic] River are exceedingly distress'd, and I am afraid will leave their fine farms and luxuriant crops to the merciless hands of their unrelenting savage enemy if not supported. Today we have a report that great part of Stone Roby is destroyed by a party of Indians. All this is distressing, yet my motto is never despair, that Providence.has determined that this should be the grand epoch of American independence, and altho clouds gather over our heads, and grow thicker and heavier every moment, yet they will disperse and leave us in the noble possession of all we wish and contend for." He closes with personal asides and enquiries after mutual friends. A fine war letter.

Tabulae regni animalis, omnes VI classes animalium comprehendentes. Tabellen des Thierreichs. Regni animalis classis II Avium ordines I-VI.

. Augsburg, Kaiserlich Franzische Akademische Handlung [1780-1786]. Folio (52 x 36 cm). 24 contemporary hand-coloured copper engravings and 24 black & white copper engravings. Beautiful, contemporary style, pastiche binding, half calf over paper boards. Richly gilt decorated spine with seven raised bands; gilt ornaments and title.l Exceedingly rare, especially in this double suite, including contemporarily hand-coloured plates. This is the complete set of ornithological plates. These bird plates bear the printed signature of Gottlieb Friedrich Riedel in the margin. He was born in 1724 in Dresden, Germany and died in 1784 in Augsburg, Germany. He was a well-respected and accomplished porcelain painter and the teacher of Friedrich Kirschner in the Ludwigsburg-based porcelain factory, where he worked from 1770 as a painter of birds, insects and flowers. Friedrich Kirschner was born in about 1748 in Bayreuth, Germany, and died in Augsburg, Germany, in 1788. Complete copies of this work are extremely rare; globaly there is only one known copy in the UB in Augsburg. Other libraries - such as the UB Tübingen, Frankfurt, Staatsbibliothek München, UB Strasbourg, UB Basel, Amsterdam, ÖNB, Library of the British Museum (NH) and the French National Library - only possess incomplete copies. Coloured copies are almost unheard of; the fish and amphibian section of the coloured version has only come to auction once, in 1964; the coloured birds, apparently, have never been auctioned. No known coloured sections exist in any institutional library. Some staining or soiling to plate margins and two marginal paper restorations. The plates with a nice strong impression and the contemporary colouring very well-executed and vivid.         Universal History of the Religious Rites, Ceremonies, and Customs of the Whole New World; Or, A Complete and Impartial View of All the Religions in the Various Nations of the Universe. Both Antient (sic) and Modern, from the Creation down to the present Time.

Alexander Hogg, London 1780 - Folio (13 6/8 x 9 1/3"). [8], 1704 (i.e. 704), XIIpp. Modern half calf over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Raised bands. Modern endpapers and fly leaves. Engraved frontispiece. Originally published in 60 fascicles, William Hurd's brilliant work on comparative religion and obscure religious practices is a translation and abridgment of Bernard Picart's celebrated work "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde." The author's goal was to record the religious rituals and beliefs of the world in all their diversity as objectively and authentically as possible. Breaking with all the previous models the work presented religions, even those of the "idolatrous peoples" as even-handedly as possible. It argued for religious toleration by showing the ill effects of fanaticism, wherever it could be found, and by praising those religions, such as Islam, that offered toleration to others. At a time of widespread anti-Semitism, it offered one of the most sympathetic portraits then available of European Jewry. The book is embellished with 60 stricking copper engravings depicting the rites, ceremonies and customs of over 40 world religions, including the ancient and present state of religion amongst the Jews, Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Chinese, Japanese, Peruvians, Floridans, Native Americans, Africans, Muslims, Greeks, Christians, etc. The plates have been engraved by the finest artists of the period, such as Robert Pollard (Frontispiece), James Walker, Joseph Collyer, and Charles Taylor. Includes a 4-page list of subscribers which the binder placed between the title page and the Introductory Preface instead of placing it at the end. Minor shelf wear. Frontispiece, title page, and Preface remargined (not affecting text or illustration). Page 21/22 remargined, with a tiny loss of text at lower corner. Moderate and sporadic water-staining throughout the first half of the book, slightly affecting a few plates. The year of publication of the remargined title having been trimmed, it is hard to determine precisely which edition this copy is. However, a note at the end of the list of subscribers stating that "A new edition of the beginning numbers [of the fascicles] being now ready, this day is published, Dr. Hurd's Religious Rites and Ceremonies. Adorned with sixty elegant copper-plates, and neatly bound in calf and lettered" can be an indication that this copy is indeed the first book form edition. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in fair to very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Physique du Monde, dediee au Roi. Tomes I-IV.

. Paris, Quillau, De Conti & Lafosse, 1780. Four parts in four. 4to. Over 2,200 pages, 20 large, folded, and partly hand-coloured plates. Original uniform full mottled calf. Spines with five raised bands, gilt vignettes and red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges red.l Very rare and well-illustrated cosmological work, dealing with the study of celestial bodies, in particular Earth, and, consequently, of light, colours, and chemistry. The large folded maps by Louis Jacques Goussier are excellent. Goussier (1722-1799) also worked for Diderot's Encyclopedie. "Some call Goussier the third encyclopedist, after Diderot and d'Alembert." (Wikipedia). Indeed this work is in the style of the Ecyclopedie and one might wonder why it is not a part of it, except perhaps for being far more elaborate, in particular in the execution of the plates. Baron de Marivetz (1728-1794) "...was the son of an extremely wealthy ice manufacturer in Dijon but later in his life he made poor investments where he lost much of his fortune. Early on he became interested in astronomy and physics, moving to Paris where he studied the sciences with great determination. A few months after the success of the Montgolfier brothers, he carried out his own aerostatic experiments. From 1784 he lived in Langres, and when the Revolution reached the town, Marivetz was sent back to Paris, where he was guillotined" (Curtis Shuh's bibliography of mineralogy). According to Shuh, this work is "...Rare. This is the only and unfinished edition of an ambitious project that ultimately bankrupted the author. Prepared in collaboration with Louis Jacques Goussier..., there are 20 partly hand-colored plates in folio that includes very good renderings of a microscope, a camera obscura, a telescope, and astronomical systems. The work's scope was to provide a description and general theory of physical geography by developing the theory from principals of celestial physics. Thus in this cosmogony Marivetz would attempt to explain the earth's and particularly France's geography and physical history and attempt through the framework of their theory to forecast future events. Hoefer calls the work very rare because the unsold copies were confiscated during the Revolution and destroyed after Marivetz's execution. The work was never completed and ended with the publication of the second part of volume five." The work contains three separate sections: a descriptive part; a dictionary/glossary of the key words used in this work; and (sometimes very elaborate) explanations to the large and detailed plates. At the end of the fourth volume a letter is printed: "lettre de M. le baron de Marivetz a M. Bailly, de l'Academie des Sciences, sur un paragraphe du troisieme volume de l'histoire de l'astronomie moderne", which starts with the ominous observation "L'histoire est le depot des erreurs des Hommes". We have the first four volumes, the extremely rare fifth, "Sur le feu", published in 1787, is wanting. Some rubbing to the boards, pencilled annotations in one text section of volume III, otherwise a very good clean set. Poggendorf 2, p. 55. Not in Houzeau & Lancaster..

Physique du Monde, dédiée au Roi. Tomes I-IV
