Behind him is a chamber pot, and to the right is an apothecary wearing a mask and holding a large syringe. Behind him is an American with feathered headdress.         LES EPOQUES DE LA NATURE TOME PREMIER,

DE L'IMPRIMERIE ROYALE, PARIS 1780 - In 16. Dim. 17,5x11 cm. Pp. (4)+246+VI. All'interno sono presenti sei planches. Tagli marmorizzati. In ottime condizioni. Legatura in ottime condizioni. Scarce first separate edition of 1780 of the most important work by the naturalist George Louis Le Clerc Conte di Buffon (1707-1788) which signed the beginning of geological history. Buffon was an exponent of the scientific movement connected to illuminism and his theories inspired the next generations of naturalists in particular Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. In the work Buffon elaborates important theories, then condemned by Sorbonne University. He proposes a new chronology of the history of earth divided into seven epochs with an age of 75.000 years with hypothesis about appereance of first human beings, their migration before separation of continents and their differentiation in function of environment. The work, appeared for the first time in 1778 as tome V of supplement to "Histoire Naturellle", was made up oof two tomes, unfortunately we only have the first tome. Inside there are six planches. Marbled external edges of pages. In very good conditions. Full leather cover of XIX century with golden title and decorations in the spine in very good general conditions slightly worn in the edges and spine. Binding in very good conditions. Inside pages are in very good conditions with occasional foxings.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM DR. MALACHI TREAT TO MAJOR NICHOLAS FISH, DISCUSSING INDIAN RAIDS IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY].

Albany. June 28, 1780. - 3pp. Quarto. Old fold lines. A few slight separations and small edge tears. Light soiling and foxing. Good. In a blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. A friendly letter written by Dr. Malachi Treat, Physician General of the Northern Department of the Continental Army, to Major Nicholas Fish, in which he mentions Indian raids on settlers in the Mohawk River Valley. Treat was a New York City physician called upon during the American Revolution to serve in the hospitals of the Continental Army. Nicholas Fish, also from New York, served with Treat and Alexander Hamilton, with whom he became good friends. In his letter Treat expresses pleasure that Fish's brigade has arrived safely at West Point; though this may have been the case, it is likely that Fish was already gone from West Point by the time this letter was written, as he was appointed brigade inspector with General James Clinton's brigade, which was sent with Major General John Sullivan's force to fight the Iroquois in the Mohawk Valley in early July 1780. Thus Treat's letter is particularly interesting, as it involves the campaign on which Fish was currently embarking. He writes, in part: "I feel a real pleasure in knowing your brigade is safely arrived at West Point, as the enemy are coming up against you in force; you will now be a match for them, and have a fine opportunity to reconnoiter their position, numbers, and intention, from the various [?] of this celebrated place. The prospects are very intrusive and commanding, take care not to perform the retrograde in their presence, but the [?], or offer them a charte blanche, all and [similar?] of these things will be very affecting to all yr. friends. This Gibraltar of America, and the brave troops that defend it will do honor I make no doubt to the cause they contend for, and have their temples crowned with immortal laurels if occasion offers of showing their pro[w]ess and fortitude. "I expect soon to see you at West Point if nothing turns up to prevent me. Alarms are frequent from the westward, the savages appear here and there in small parties, as forerunners of a larger [force] composed of Tories and Indians who are acoming down, to scatter destruction and horror around them. The inhabitants on the Mohock [sic] River are exceedingly distress'd, and I am afraid will leave their fine farms and luxuriant crops to the merciless hands of their unrelenting savage enemy if not supported. Today we have a report that great part of Stone Roby is destroyed by a party of Indians. All this is distressing, yet my motto is never despair, that Providence.has determined that this should be the grand epoch of American independence, and altho clouds gather over our heads, and grow thicker and heavier every moment, yet they will disperse and leave us in the noble possession of all we wish and contend for." He closes with personal asides and enquiries after mutual friends. A fine war letter.

Tabulae regni animalis, omnes VI classes animalium comprehendentes. Tabellen des Thierreichs. Regni animalis classis II Avium ordines I-VI.

. Augsburg, Kaiserlich Franzische Akademische Handlung [1780-1786]. Folio (52 x 36 cm). 24 contemporary hand-coloured copper engravings and 24 black & white copper engravings. Beautiful, contemporary style, pastiche binding, half calf over paper boards. Richly gilt decorated spine with seven raised bands; gilt ornaments and title.l Exceedingly rare, especially in this double suite, including contemporarily hand-coloured plates. This is the complete set of ornithological plates. These bird plates bear the printed signature of Gottlieb Friedrich Riedel in the margin. He was born in 1724 in Dresden, Germany and died in 1784 in Augsburg, Germany. He was a well-respected and accomplished porcelain painter and the teacher of Friedrich Kirschner in the Ludwigsburg-based porcelain factory, where he worked from 1770 as a painter of birds, insects and flowers. Friedrich Kirschner was born in about 1748 in Bayreuth, Germany, and died in Augsburg, Germany, in 1788. Complete copies of this work are extremely rare; globaly there is only one known copy in the UB in Augsburg. Other libraries - such as the UB Tübingen, Frankfurt, Staatsbibliothek München, UB Strasbourg, UB Basel, Amsterdam, ÖNB, Library of the British Museum (NH) and the French National Library - only possess incomplete copies. Coloured copies are almost unheard of; the fish and amphibian section of the coloured version has only come to auction once, in 1964; the coloured birds, apparently, have never been auctioned. No known coloured sections exist in any institutional library. Some staining or soiling to plate margins and two marginal paper restorations. The plates with a nice strong impression and the contemporary colouring very well-executed and vivid.         Physique du Monde, dediee au Roi. Tomes I-IV.

. Paris, Quillau, De Conti & Lafosse, 1780. Four parts in four. 4to. Over 2,200 pages, 20 large, folded, and partly hand-coloured plates. Original uniform full mottled calf. Spines with five raised bands, gilt vignettes and red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges red.l Very rare and well-illustrated cosmological work, dealing with the study of celestial bodies, in particular Earth, and, consequently, of light, colours, and chemistry. The large folded maps by Louis Jacques Goussier are excellent. Goussier (1722-1799) also worked for Diderot's Encyclopedie. "Some call Goussier the third encyclopedist, after Diderot and d'Alembert." (Wikipedia). Indeed this work is in the style of the Ecyclopedie and one might wonder why it is not a part of it, except perhaps for being far more elaborate, in particular in the execution of the plates. Baron de Marivetz (1728-1794) "...was the son of an extremely wealthy ice manufacturer in Dijon but later in his life he made poor investments where he lost much of his fortune. Early on he became interested in astronomy and physics, moving to Paris where he studied the sciences with great determination. A few months after the success of the Montgolfier brothers, he carried out his own aerostatic experiments. From 1784 he lived in Langres, and when the Revolution reached the town, Marivetz was sent back to Paris, where he was guillotined" (Curtis Shuh's bibliography of mineralogy). According to Shuh, this work is "...Rare. This is the only and unfinished edition of an ambitious project that ultimately bankrupted the author. Prepared in collaboration with Louis Jacques Goussier..., there are 20 partly hand-colored plates in folio that includes very good renderings of a microscope, a camera obscura, a telescope, and astronomical systems. The work's scope was to provide a description and general theory of physical geography by developing the theory from principals of celestial physics. Thus in this cosmogony Marivetz would attempt to explain the earth's and particularly France's geography and physical history and attempt through the framework of their theory to forecast future events. Hoefer calls the work very rare because the unsold copies were confiscated during the Revolution and destroyed after Marivetz's execution. The work was never completed and ended with the publication of the second part of volume five." The work contains three separate sections: a descriptive part; a dictionary/glossary of the key words used in this work; and (sometimes very elaborate) explanations to the large and detailed plates. At the end of the fourth volume a letter is printed: "lettre de M. le baron de Marivetz a M. Bailly, de l'Academie des Sciences, sur un paragraphe du troisieme volume de l'histoire de l'astronomie moderne", which starts with the ominous observation "L'histoire est le depot des erreurs des Hommes". We have the first four volumes, the extremely rare fifth, "Sur le feu", published in 1787, is wanting. Some rubbing to the boards, pencilled annotations in one text section of volume III, otherwise a very good clean set. Poggendorf 2, p. 55. Not in Houzeau & Lancaster..

Goussier (1722-1799) also worked for Diderot's Encyclopédie. "Some call Goussier the third encyclopedist, after Diderot and d'Alembert." (Wikipedia). Indeed this work is in the style of the Ecyclopédie and one might wonder why it is not a part of it, except perhaps for being far more elaborate, in particular in the execution of the plates. Bailly, de l'Académie des Sciences, sur un paragraphe du troisieme volume de l'histoire de l'astronomie moderne", which starts with the ominous observation "L'histoire est le dépôt des erreurs des Hommes". We have the first four volumes, the extremely rare fifth, "Sur le feu", published in 1787, is wanting. Some rubbing to the boards, pencilled annotations in one text section of volume III, otherwise a very good clean set. Poggendorf 2, p. 55. Not in Houzeau & Lancaster.

The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with preliminary observations, and an account of some foreign prisons and hospitals

London: William Eyres for Cadell and Conant, 1780. Octavo, with ten folding engraved plates including seven highly detailed architectural plans; occasional inoffensive offsetting, some water-staining to the margins of the text and affecting the plates, but overall a good copy in contemporary tree calf, spine panelled in gilt between raised bands, some wear to joints and extremities. Prison reform in the 1780s. Second and best edition of John Howard's exhaustive and highly influential examination of the prisons of Britain and Europe, considerably enlarged from the first edition of 1777 and with an additional seven engraved folding plates. Howard's criticism of British gaols was contemporary with recent discoveries in the Pacific, marking the work out as one of the fundamental works in the debate that would culminate in the establishment of the penal colony at Botany Bay.Howard's study is a landmark in the history of criminology. Like his successor Jeremy Bentham, Howard took great interest in the architecture of prisons and demonstrated that an improvement of the penal environment could promote rehabilitation. This second edition features eleven folding plates of which seven are detailed plans of existing prisons including Newgate and the Bastille. In 1773 Howard accepted the office of high sheriff of Bedford and was appalled by the conditions in the local gaol. As a result, he began an exhaustive examination of British gaols and in 1774 gave evidence to a parliamentary committee which legislated for gaolers to be paid a fixed salary to minimise their extorting money from prisoners, while all those detained without charge were immediately released. Howard continued to agitate for better food and medical care and launched a systematic inspection of British and continental gaols. The State of Prisons is a rich source of statistical data and detailed description alike. Interestingly, this second edition expands upon the condition of the Thames hulks based on a series of visits made in 1779. Howard reports that the pursers' weights were doctored for personal gain and that new rations of cloth and bedding had been issued specifically for his visits to the Justicia and her sister hulk the Censor. He reports horrific mortality rates on the hulk Justicia: between August 1776 and March 1778 a staggering 176 of the 632 prisoners had died. The appalling conditions and vice on the hulks led to their widespread condemnation and calls for transportation as a preferable state of affairs.Tragically, Howard died in the Crimea in 1790 from the very prison fever he sought to eradicate. He draws comparisons between the elimination of scurvy at sea and maintaining the health of prisoners and refers to the scholarship of Sir John Pringle and James Lind, both eminent contemporary physicians of the scurvy problem.

MÉMOIRES SECRETS POUR SERVIR À L'HISTOIRE DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE DES LETTRES EN FRANCE, DEPUIS MDCCLXII JUSQU'À NOS JOURS; OU JOURNAL D'UN OBSERVATEUR - TERRIFIC ASSOCIATION COPY

London: John Adamson, 1780-1789. Second Edition. Preceded by the First Edition published in 1777. 36 volumes. A complete set of this landmark work of 18th century France. The Mémoires Secrets were a collection of news and gossip about the current events of it's time. Information and criticism about art, architecture, literature (books which were suppressed or prohibited by the censor), and scandals of the day were recorded in a register or journal within the salon of Madame Doublet de Persan (1677-1771). Louis Petit de Bachaumont (1690-1771), born of a noble family and brought up at the court of Versailles, presided as "Master of Ceremonies" in the salon of Madame Doublet de Persan, and his name is now synonymous with the authorship of the Mémoires. Bachaumont died in 1771, and would have edited the record for perhaps the first six volumes; authorship of the remaining volumes are credited to Pidasant de Mairobert and Durey De Meinieres, among others. The critical work pertaining to the study of French life and culture during the reign of Louis XVI. The set is uniformly quarter bound in speckled calf over decorated boards, with the spines ornately stamped in gilt "fruit and floral" pattern and the labels in maroon and black morocco. Matching endpapers uniformly hand-marbled and page edges stained bright red, with matching fabric bookmarks bound into each volume. Light trace of foxing evident throughout several volumes. Volumes 32 and 34 have sustained some loss to the leather at the crown of the spines (the loss to vol. 34 being the more significant of the two). Quarter binding on all volumes is lightly rubbed along the front and rear panels, consistent with age and use. The extraordinary feature of this set is the hand written note bound into volume 1; the note is addressed to a Monsieur and Madame Mem'ere in Paris, written and signed by Bachaumont (no date), bearing a broken wax seal with his family crest stamped into it. It describes a great project which Madame Doublet has saddled on him (presumably the undertaking of so many volumes), and is signed by Bachaumont at the bottom. Bachaumont died in 1771, some nine years before this set was printed, so it is likely that the note was written to the couple prior to his passing, and that they bound it in to their set of the finished work. In addition to the 36 volume set, we are offering a copy of the TABLE ALPHABÉTIQUE - AUTEURS ET PERSONNAGES CITÉS DANS LES MÉMOIRES SECRETS (Bruxelles, 1866), published in an edition of 200 copies; it is an alphabetic glossary and index absolutely indispensible for using the Mémoires. A Near Fine volume in plain printed wraps, with the pages uncut. While OCLC/WorldCat locates some 50 locations for this title, the majority of the sets are either incomplete, facsimiles from the original edition, or on microfilm; locations with complete sets are significantly fewer, and outside of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, we have not been able to conclusively locate anything written in Bachaumont's hand. A Near Fine, complete set.

Eighteenth-century manuscript map of Lima, signed by the artist, and in contemporary color. N.d. [ca. 1780]. [Lima]. Fine pen and ink, manuscript map with wash color, drawn on laid, watermarked paper. 365 mm x 481 mm. Magnificent manuscript cartographic rendering of Lima, executed in pen and ink, with absolutely contemporary wash color; comprises the entire city, as well as the outskirts, allowing a clear view of the appearance of the city in the 18th century. Although undated, we can establish it´s date in the later decades of the 18th century, both for it´s maker and his participation in the towers of the Cathedral of Lima. North is oriented to the upper left. A numbered key identifies 70 locations within the walled city (churches, hospitals, chapels, the bridge, parishes); a further numbered key points out 14 additional locations (gates, and locations outside the city). Cartographically, the map resembles the one printed by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, however this is far superior, clearly having made use of more updated sources of information.Martorell (d. 1835 - Lima) was born in Catalonia, although he apparently spent most of his life in Peru: first under Spanish rule, and later during the Republic. As an architect, he can be defined as a neoclassicist. Amongst his most illustrious legacies are the Towers of the Cathedral of Lima. "Identica trascendencia tuvieron las torres (c. 1796 ?" 1800) para la arquitectura local, previa modificacion del aspecto que inicialmente les habia otorgado Martorell" (Kusunoki Rodriguez, Entre Roma clasica y Jerusalen santa: utopias urbanas en Lima ilustrada). Martorell can be named amongst the great architects active in Lima by the second half of the 18th century and beginnings of the 19th. Most of his works are not yet identified, as pointed by San Cristobal "Habrá que investigar en lo sucesivo más ampliamente cuales fueron las obras ejecutadas por Martorell. No aparece mencionado por el Diccionario de Mendiburu". Vargas Ugarte mentions him as having participated in the towers of the Cathedral of Arequipa as well.San Cristobal, Antonio, "Ignacio Martorell y las Torres de la Catedral de Lima", Historica, Vol. XIX, N 2 (1995).

PREMIÈRE ÉDITION, comprenant le catalogue initiale des 45 nébuleuses et amas d'étoiles identifiés par Messier à cette date. // FIRST EDITION, containing Messier's initial catalogue of 45 objects: "the most celebrated nebulae and clusters, including M1, the Crab Nebula; M13, the globular star cluster in Hercules; and M31, the Andromeda Galaxy" (DSB). First published in 1771, but with an additional 23 new objects observed by Messier since its publication. Most interested in comets, Messier is attributed with the initial discovery of twelve or thirteen from the appearance of Comet 1759 III to Comet 1798 I and three additional independent discoveries. His famous catalogue of objects which retain his M for Messier numbers to this day came about only because "the nebula I discovered above the southern horn of Taurus on September 12, 1758, while observing the comet that year... had such a resemblance to a comet, in its form and brightness, that I endeavoured to find others, so that astronomers would not confuse these same nebulae with comets just beginning to shine" (Messier Connaissance des Temps 1800/1801 recorded in DSB). // Photos available upon request.

First edition of this superb printing of Cervantes's timeless masterpiece, one of the great monuments of Spanish typography. This is a fine large paper copy. The idea for an edition illustrated by the best Spanish artists of the day, members of the Academia de San Fernando, was conceived in 1773 by Vincente de los Ríos (1732-1779), soldier and Cervantista, and Francisco Antonio de Angulo, secretary of the Academia Real. Some 1600 copies of the work were printed, on special paper from the Guarro mill in Catalunya and with specially designed type cast from matrices made by Jerónimo Gil. The text is that of Juan de la Cuesta's 1605 second edition, which at the time was thought to be the first edition.

We know that the Cardinal de Rohan library (infamous!) It was twins on the way back iron.Binding full fair calf ice period. Back smooth decorated. Part of title and volume number in brown leather. 3 slashes on upper cover of Volume II without consequence. Nice copy. The sun knight is a translation of the Spanish novel of chivalry Diego Orthunez of Calahorra, the first part was published in 1555, the suites appeared later, second and third parts are not of the author. Interesting preface to the Marquis de Paulmy, celèbre medievalist at the time, which asserts that the cycle of Amadis is a continuation of the knight of the sun. A table of contents allows to find the chronology of each character. The Marquis de Paulmy and his sidekick Contant d'Orville did not simply translate the knight of the sun, they compiled not only the result of the History of the knight soelil, but also the last 21 novels Amadis, and romance novels by Duverdier, allowing to follow the fate of all the characters of the Spanish romantic chivalry two books. Seems the strangest musical scores introduction and philidor songs and celebrating Grétry chivalry, testimony to the perception of the eighteenth of a romantic chivalry.         Weidengehölz im Sumpf mit Satyr und Satyrknaben.

      - Radierung, auf Velin. 26,3:33 cm. Chodowiecki (1726-1801) und A.J. Carstens (1754-1798).
