[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM BENEDICT ARNOLD TO THE ADJUTANT QUARTERMASTER GENERAL, REQUESTING FRESH HORSES]

Headquarters, Robinson House [Garrison, N.Y.], 1780. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor wear and soiling, some separation starting at folds. About very good. General Benedict Arnold writes the day after receiving word that British Gen. Henry Clinton had agreed to his price for turning his coat. In this letter Arnold requests fresh horses to run express courier routes, some of which surely carried treasonous information to the British: "Sir, I have sent the brave Sergeant Pike for six or eight of the best horses you have in pasture for the purpose of relieving the light horse employed here to go express. With hard service and want of forage they are worn down & unfit for use. You will please to deliver him eight of the best horses you have if we can find so many that will answer. Also, a pair of the best waggon horses you have in lieu of two which were sent to me by Col. Hay who will not draw." The letter was clearly drawn up in some haste, as there are several words stricken through where Arnold has changed his mind about phrasing or information. In June 1778, Washington placed Arnold in command of Philadelphia, where he lived and entertained extravagantly, and his private business dealings, haughty and dismissive behavior, and close association with the Shippens and other quasi-Loyalists excited the enmity and wrath of the Executive Council of Pennsylvania. On Feb. 3, 1779 a courier served him with a copy of eight formal charges filed against him by the Pennsylvania Council. Outraged, Arnold demanded a court-martial to clear the allegations against him. "From this period began the plot that would end, eighteen months later, with Arnold's defection to the British side....He used those channels to inform General Henry Clinton, commanding the British army, that he was ready to serve the Crown. He explained to Clinton that he had lost faith in the revolutionary cause when the United States allied itself with France. No evidence before May 1779 supports this claim. Clinton was cautious but interested in the chance that Arnold might betray a key point in American defenses. He left the matter in the hands of young staff officer, John André" - ANB. By July, Arnold had named his minimum price of £10,000, and on Aug. 1 became commander of the critical American fortress at West Point. By the time this letter was written, important information was passing from Arnold to Clinton, and the plot to betray West Point was well advanced. A wonderful letter, hastily written and clearly showing Arnold's agitation as he slid deeper into infamy.

[CHART OF THE COAST OF GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA]

[London, 1780. Sheet size: 31 1/4 x 23 7/8 inches. Minor age toning, minor chips at sheet edges, else very good. An important and quite scarce chart of the coast of Georgia and parts of South Carolina and Florida, as well as an important Revolutionary War battle plan. This fine chart is from THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, one of the finest large scale sea atlases of the United States and Canadian Atlantic coastline ever produced. The maps in the atlas were produce over a seven-year period (1775- 82), and are well known for their accurate portrayal of various sounds, bays, bars, harbors as well as navigational hazards. This atlas was used extensively by the Royal Navy during the American Revolution. This is a detailed chart of the Georgia, lower South Carolina and upper Florida coastlines, covering an area between the St. John River to John's Island. The towns of Savannah, Beaufort, Hardwick and Sunbury are shown and the coastal Parishes in Georgia are names. To the west is noted "Indian Boundary Line." With an inset titled "Plan of the Siege of Savannah, And the Defeat of the French and Rebels on the 9th Oct. 1779, By His Majesty's Forces under the Command of Major General Augustin Prevost. Surveyed by John Wilson A. Engineer." This is the third and most important state of the map. The very important feature of this state of the map is the large (7 3/4 x 11 7/8 inch) inset map showing the Siege of Savannah: "British defenses of the city delineated in detail, keyed by number to separate explanation sheet. The Rebel camp and French encampments are indicated as are lines of march and approaches for the siege" (Nebenzahl).

Amsterdam, Jan Christiaan Sepp, 1788. Large-4to. pp. (2), 172, with handcoloured engraved frontispiece and 41 handcoloured engraved plates. Recent half calf, spine in 6 compartments with gilt lettering, marbled sides. A beautifully illustrated entomological publication of which the two works are mostly found bound together. Our copy contains the general title for both works dated 1780. The work describes the Cicadidae and bugs of all parts of the world, many from Surinam, the Cape and the Coromandel coast. Caspar Stoll was the first entomologist to devote himself almost entirely to Hemiptera. The two frontispieces are particularly attractive and show a wreath of flowers with insects.Caspar Stoll was born in Hessen-Kassel between 1725 and 1730 and lived in The Hague and later in Amsterdam. William V of Orange-Nassau was the godfather of two of his children. He was 'commies ter Admiraliteit' at Amsterdam and published several works on entomology.Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811) was a bookseller and publisher and his publishing house produced some of the finest Dutch natural history colour-plate books of the 18th century. Apart from that, he was an entomologist, artist and engraver and wrote together with his father a large work on Dutch insects illustrated by himself. He also made the illustrations for the above 2 works. The first work depicts 173 insects on 29 plates and the second volume depicts 298 insects on 41 plates. The text is in Dutch and French. The two works are bound in a somewhat confusing order, but both are complete and in fine condition.Provenance: Signature of Kikumaro Okano on inside frontcover and his Japanese monogram stamp on titles.Landwehr 191; Nissen ZBI, 3999 & 4000. Part I contained information on the construction and use of sextant and octants and was not reissued. Usually known by the French version of his name, J. H. de Magellan (1723 - 1790), descended from the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, was a Portuguese scientist whose work focused primarily on scientific instruments. He is credited with introducing English scientific instruments, and the work of Joseph Priestley to the scientific community in France. After travels throughout Europe he settled in England in 1764 to pursue his scientific studies. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of London in 1774 and was also a member of the Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg, and of the Royal Academy of Madrid. As an instrument maker and designer, supplying the governments of Europe, he proposed changes and improvements to astronomical and nautical observation instruments such as the quarters of a circle (English sextants and octants), in the reflection circle, in the sextant and in the pendulum clock. As far as meteorological instruments are concerned, he put forward improvements in barometers, thermometers and presented a meteorographer. As regards physical instruments, worthy of mention are his improvements to Atwood?s machines and to the precision scale, very important for the advances of chemistry. In Traite V in our book he deals with astronomic clocks and watches, marine compasses, protection against lightning, and the theodolite. The final Traite is actually an extract from a letter from Magellan to a doctor friend in Paris describing the construction and use of a new inhaler or respirateur invented by a fellow member of the Royal Society, the physician John Mudge, and believed to cure infallibly catarrhal coughs. After his death in Turkey his letters and travel notes were published in these volumes, which has become a classic of Swedish travel literature. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1780, 1780 - in-folio, 20 Pergamentbl. recto-verso in kalligraph. Schönschrift beschrieben, auf das Titelblatt in dt. Sprache folgt der Vertragstext, in jeweils 2 Spalten in dt. u. franz. Sprache u. Treaty of Alliance. Manuscript of an important treaty between France and the Swiss states concluded in 1777. This handwritten copy, probably executed for the canton of Fribourg, has the hw. ex-libris ,Philippe de Diesbach? on the first fly leaf. He was the grandson of the most important colonel of the Swiss troups serving Louis XVI of France. He became Lieutenant General in 1780 (date of this copy). As most of the Swiss states are of German tongue, the text of this treaty is bilingual (German/French), in a beautiful (Swiss ?) full marocco binding.

Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren.

Amsterdam, heirs of David Klippink, 1780. - 8vo. 2 parts in 1 vol. XXVI, 182 pp. (4), 190 pp. With engr. frontispiece and including both half-titles. Contemp. half calf with gilt title and emblems on spine. Portrait frontispiece of "Mohammed, son of Abdullah, of the tribe of Koreis, the descendant of Ishmael". Very rare sole edition of this biography of Mohammed and history of the Arab people, painting a picture of him as a strong leader who brought the Arab tribes out of barbarity and into modern civilization. A distinct product of the European Enlightenment - in which ingrained attitudes towards religious were suddenly thrown into question - the present work marks a fascinating turning point in European views of the Prophet, adopting the rather admiring tone which would be echoed throughout 19th century biographies. - "Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the first major re-assessments of Muhammad came from a Dutchman, Johan Nomsz; after all, historians nowadays agree that it was in the relatively tolerant culture of the Northern Netherlands that the Enlightenment was actually born and came to fruition. In 1780, Nomsz published Mohammed, of de Hervorming der Arabieren, 'Muhammad, or the Reform of the Arabs'. The text is part prose play, part historical analysis. In it, Nomsz sketches the rise of Islam through the life of Muhammad as he had been able to reconstruct it from a number of scholarly works that had become available in Europe. His Muhammad is both a true prophet and a great statesman" (Rietbergen, Europe: A Cultural History, p. 143). In his preface, Nomsz insists on the name 'Mohammed' rather than the 'Mahomet' favored by other, misinformed European observers. - Half-title of Part 1 with closed repaired tear, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh. Very rare. OCLC shows just a handful of copies outside the Netherlands - and just one in American institutional libraries, at Yale. OCLC 898979382. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ordinances made and passed by the Governor and Legislative Council of the Province of Quebec

William Brown, Quebec 1780 - (11 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches). [3], 1-86, [1, blank] pp (p.1 beginning on verso of French title resulting in even number pages on recto). Titles and text in English and French, woodcut royal seal on titles, ornamental headpieces. Expertly bound to style in half russia over 18th century marbled paper covered boards Ordinances of the government of Quebec in the midst of the American Revolution, printed by Quebec's first printer. Several of the ordinances made in 1779 and 1780 concern the regulation of wheat and flour, no doubt due to high demand and inflation brought about the American Revolution. Other laws passed concern regulations relating the police, public ferries and carriages, the payment of debts, judicial fees, etc. The printer's journal reveals that 200 copies of these ordinance were printed for the government. William Brown, following an apprenticeship to William Dunlap in Philadelphia and a brief period of printing in Barbados, began printing in Quebec in 1764 on the first press in the province and among the earliest in all of Canada. He is noted for his publication there of the Quebec Gazette , the first periodical in the province, but also printed on behalf of the government, including the present Ordinances, as well as private publications. Brown's press is described by Tremaine as "the most important printing office in eighteenth century Canada both in the amount and variety of its production and as a source of supplies and personnel for other printers." The document reads: "I do hereby certify, That the Bearer, [blank] late [blank] on board the [blank] under my command, is entitled to whatever share or portion of prize-money may accrue to him from [blank] to [blank] [signed] John Barry Capt." Following the war, Barry was made a senior captain in the new United States Navy and effectively protected U.S. shipping interests in the West Indies during the Quasi War with France. Eigenh. Brief mit U. („Mirabeau fils").

[Paris?], 14. XI. 1780. - 4to. 2 SS. An zwei Stellen Tintenfrassschaden. Beilage: koloriertes, gestochenes Portrait Mirabeaus, leicht gebräunt.

[FIVE LEGAL DOCUMENTS COMPRISING THE APPEAL CASE OF THE AMERICAN SHIP, NICHOLAS, SEIZED BY THE BRITISH SLOOP OF WAR, SAVAGE, IN 1776]

[London. 1780].. Five documents, totaling [23]pp. Large folio sheets, folded into four panels, with docketing information on verso of final leaf. Minor soiling. Near fine. In a blue half morocco and cloth box. Court documents relating to the appeal case of the Massachusetts ship Nicholas, captained by Nathaniel Atkins, which was seized by the British while in port in Halifax in January 1776. Following the opening shots of the Revolutionary War, in April 1775, King George III passed an Act prohibiting "all manner of trade and commerce" with the American colonies while they were in a state of open rebellion. The Act further stated that any ship belonging to the colonies, with their cargoes, "which shall be found trading in any port or place in the said colonies, or going to trade or coming from trading in any such port or place," shall be subject to seizure. The Nicholas set sail in December 1774, prior to open rebellion, sailing to England and Europe, and finally back to Halifax a year later. She left England with all the proper paperwork in place in October 1775, arriving in Halifax in January 1776. The Nova Scotia authorities adjudged in May 1776 that the ship was subject to confiscation, and these documents comprise the appeal made before the Lords Commissioners of Appeals for Prize Cases. The defendant's case argues that since the ship did not sail from an American port, or to an American port, on the final leg of her journey, she should not be subject to seizure by the government. The documents arguing both sides of the case are present here, as is a document detailing the instructions which the British captain, Samuel Graves, acted under. Such documents are relatively scarce, with only four locations noted by ESTC for any of these five items: British Library, British National Archives, Harvard Law, and the John Carter Brown Library. An interesting piece of Revolutionary Americana. ESTC T6759-T6763.

        Unknown European Gentleman

1780 - Pastel on laid, watermarked paper. The sheet retains signs of having been stretched, as these types of portraits typically were. Dampstain upper right corner, tear lower right corner, otherwise excellent condition. A strikingly well done portrait of a successful European gentleman with piercing eyes Pastel portraits were popular in Europe, Great Britain and America during most of the 18th century, especially in the 1770's and 80's. They provided a more rapid way of rendering a likeness in bright colors that didn't yellow. This was a golden age for portrait painting, which exemplified the optimistic views of the Enlightenment: a sitter was not ashamed to show his or her wealth, contentment or character. Our self -assured subject looks directly at the viewer with piercing eyes, calm, practical, not likely to be fooled. It is an astounding accomplishment; we feel that this was exactly how he was. The artist allowed himself or herself (there were a number of excellent female pastel portraitists, particularly in France) to be subject entirely to what was seen and sensed about this strong, indomitable personality. PEEPSHOW: RIVER JOUSTING

ENGLEBRECHT. PEEPSHOW. PRESENTATION EINES FISCHERSTECHENS [WATER JOUSTING] by Martin Engelbrecht. Augsburg, Germany, no date, circa 1780. There are 6 hand-colored panels with margins untrimmed, each 10 1/4" wide X 7 3/4" high (regular trimmed sets measure approximately 8" wide x 6 1/4" high). Except for a stain in the corner of 1 panel, this is in Fine condition with the original label on the back of the last panel. Each panel has cut-out hand colored scenes which, when viewed at spaced intervals, provide a three dimensional view of a river jousting outing. Men and even women in boats try to send their opponents overboard as they come near until only 1 boat is left and that is the winner. Dozens of men and women in fancy clothing are watching from the riverbank. Sold with a modern folding wooden stand used for display, allowing the full 3 dimensional effect to be seen. Martin Engelbrecht and his brother began their publishing house in Augsburg, Germany in 1719. Amongst other items, they produced the first peep shows, an early form of family entertainment. Engelbrecht peep shows were not bound together like their 19th century offspring, but were meant to be viewed on wooden frames with slats so that a family could have several different peep shows and view them interchangeably. This is a larger format, early peep show with unusual subject matter
