Carver, J., Esq. or Jonathan Carver (1710-80)
Dublin: Printed for S. Price, [et al], 1779. Having served in a Massachusetts regiment during the French and Indian Wars, Carver was sent in 1766 by Robert Rogers, then governor of Mackinac, to map the main rivers of Wisconsin and Minnesota in preparation for an expedition to search for an overland Northwest Passage. He traveled the Fox-Wisconsin route, then up the Mississipii and Minnesota rivers to a point west of the Falls of St. Anthony where he wintered with the Sioux Indians. In 1767, he joined the party sent by Rogers to find a route to the Pacific. They traveled as far as Grand Portage on Lake Superior, when they were forced to turn back for lack of supplies. This account, based on his journal, includes vivid descriptions of the Wisconsin and Minnesota territories, Indian life and customs, and a short treatise on tobacco. It was tremendously popular in both America and Europe, and is thought to be the first work to mention a large mountain range to the west, presumably the Rocky Mountains. Two copper plates. Octavo. The period calf binding has been expertly rebacked with a new brown leather spine and modern endpapers. The contents are a trifle toned, with some occasional mild soiling and smudging. Period previous owner's ink signature to the title page and two concluding blank leaves. Lacking the folding frontispiece map and the preceding leaves. Howes C215; Sabin 11184. Good. MESMER, Franz Anton
P.Fr. Didot le jeune, Paris, 1779. Demi vélin pastiche Un volume in-8 (190x124 mm), (2))vi-85-(1 bl.) pages / 23 pages . . Exemplaire très frai, relié sur brochure, à toute marge Crabtree [10 : "A foundational work in the history of modern psychology. Mesmer, Anton
chez P. Fr. Didot le jeune, 1779. First edition, pp. [2], vi, 85; 20th-century blue half morocco, gilt lettered spine; fine. Printing and the Mind of Man, 225: Anton Mesmer, an Austrian physician "maintained that a magnetic fluid pervades the universe, exists in every living being, and affects the nervous system...He found that there was a healing magnetic power in his own hands, and that he could obtain results in treating nervous disorders without a magnet, a faculty he called 'animal magnetism'...Fantastic scenes took place in his magnificent consulting rooms, where patients sat around a special tub, while Mesmer appeared, clad in lilac silk, waving an iron wand: perfume, theatrical costumes and dramatic illumination were all part of the treatment. Louis XVI set up a committee, with Benjamin Franklin as chairman and Lavoisier [and others] as some of the members, to investigate 'animal magnetism'. Their report condemned 'mesmerism' medically; but the idea had taken hold and spread all over Europe...There were also many serious disciples such as Puysegur, who developed hypnotism on scientific lines...Much more important scientifically were the experiments of Braid in Scotland and Charcot in Paris, and the development of psychoanalysis: Freud's first experiments were on hypnotic patients; and Jung was particularly close to mesmerism in his belief that consciousness could transcend time and place." *** [English … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANKLIN, Benjamin (1706-1790)
Printed for J. Johnson, London, 1779. (8 5/8 x 5 1/4 inches). xi, [1], 567, [7]pp. Engraved portrait frontispiece, three engraved plates (one folding), and folding table. Contemporary calf, rebacked preserving original morocco lettering piece Provenance: Earl of Fife (armorial bookplate) First edition of a noted lifetime collection of Franklin's essays published during the American Revolution. Edited by his close friend Benjamin Vaughan and published in London during the American Revolution while Franklin served as the Ambassador to France, this is the "only edition of Franklin's writings (other than his scientific), which was printed during his lifetime; [and] was done with Franklin's knowledge and consent and contains an 'errata' made by him for it" (Ford). Many of the pieces published here relate to the Revolution, including the transcript of Franklin's famous appearance before Parliament in 1766 in which he argued successfully for the repeal of the Stamp Act. Also present here is the culmination of his sagacious Poor Richard advice, his The Way to Wealth. And although the compilation is predominantly political or social essays, the collected work also includes his paper on the effectiveness of lightening rods. The work closes with Franklin's famous mock epitaph: "The body of / B. REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Philadelphia, PA, 1779. No binding. Fine. The Pennsylvania Packet or the General Advertiser. Newspaper. The Pennsylvania Packet or the General Advertiser, John Dunlap: Philadelphia, Pa., July 15, 1779. 4 pp., 10 1/2 x 16 1/2 in., untrimmed. The front page prints a lengthy letter from ""A Farmer of Virginia"" on inflation, taxation, and monetary policy. Excerpts""There are three principal causes of the depreciation of our paper-currency. First, the great quantity in circulation. Second, the want of confidence in the will and ability of the States to redeem it by taxes and specie. Third, the deranged State of the public business, and the want of effectual laws for regulating the conduct of, an bringing to account, all such as are employed in the service of the public....I shall endeavor to shew by what methods the quantity in circulation may be lessened, and the value restored, without violating the public faith or oppressing the citizens of these United States. The paper-money of these States differs from that of any country in Europe, because the principle on which it is emitted is different. The principle is taxation; and if it be not duly applied, the quantity must encrease according to the exigencies of the States, and the credit or value will be diminished in proportion as the quantity emitted exceeds the sum necessary for a circulating medium. This will generally be ascertained by comparing the price of commodities purchased with paper-money, to that which shall be purchased with specie. Taxation, then, being the principle on which the paper money was emitted, if it … [Click Below for Full Description]
