CATON, James]
Bristol July 20, 1779. folio, 3 + (1)pp., folded for posting with docket title, the docket a little soiled, a few minor spots, unbound. A good copy. The detailed description of the arrest of James Caton by a press-gang, his imprisonment in disgusting conditions, and eventual release as a result of a writ of Habeas Corpus being obtained by his friends. 'On Monday the 12th of this instant, July, about one o'clock, while transacting my business on the Exchange, I was violently seized by Lieutenant Lane, and a press-gang under his command. Astonished at so unexpected an attack, I demanded the reason for it, and was answered only by oaths and imprecations, and required to go with them. Surrounded by such a band of ruffians, I saw resistance was in vain, and I submitted .'. It is worth noting that Edmund Burke, then M.P. for Bristol, was also involved in Caton's release: 'It only now remains for me', writes Caton, 'to acknowledge with gratitude my obligations to those numerous citizens who interested themselves in my favor. My particular thanks are due to Messrs. P. Farr and T. Millet, who undertook the fatigue of a rapid journey to London, and with so much expedition obtained the writ of Habeas Corpus: - to Edmund Burke, Esq; for his unremitting attention and successful perseverance in my cause .'.

London: for P. Elmsly and H. Payne, 1779. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (207 x 122 mm). lxviii, 302, [18] pp. Engraved folding plate (some offsetting of text onto). (Lightly browned, some spotting.) Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with gilt-lettered label (heavy chipping toward spine ends and extremities, corners scuffed, boards rubbed, joints split but holding firm). Text little browned only, occasional minor spotting. Provenance: Rothamsted, Lawes Agricultural Trust collection. Very good copy internally. ---- Dibner 29; Henrey 866; Grolier/Horblit 55; Norman 1141; DSB VII, p.12-13; Garrison-Morton 103; Wellcome III, p. 329. - FIRST EDITION. Ingen-Housz's work on photosynthesis is thought to have been stimulated by Joseph Priestley's (1733-1804) Observations on different kinds of air (1772) in which he outlined the discovery that growing plants "restored" air depleted by combustion or animal respiration. In his work Ingen-Housen "advanced the understanding of the subject considerably. He established that only the green parts of a plant can 'restore' the air, that they do this only when illuminated by sunlight, and that the active part of the sun's radiation is in the visible light and not in the heat radiation. In addition he found that plants, like animals, exhibit respiration, that respiration continues day and night, and that all parts of the plant - green as well as nongreen, flowers and fruits as well as roots - take part in the process" (DSB). - Visit our website for additional images and information. [Click Below for Full Description]

The former had served with distinction during the both the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. Following the latter conflict, Keppel held his subordinate admiral Palliser responsible for the poor state of the Navy's fortunes, in particular the defeat at the First Battle of Ushant, considering Palliser's conduct as a deliberate betrayal. Keppel began a campaign of calumny, the outcome being a series of scandalous scenes in parliament and subsequent trials - each side accusing the other of treason. Carver, J., Esq. or Jonathan Carver (1710-80)
Printed for S. Price, [et al], 1779. First Edition. Hardcover. Having served in a Massachusetts regiment during the French and Indian Wars, Carver was sent in 1766 by Robert Rogers, then governor of Mackinac, to map the main rivers of Wisconsin and Minnesota in preparation for an expedition to search for an overland Northwest Passage. He traveled the Fox-Wisconsin route, then up the Mississipii and Minnesota rivers to a point west of the Falls of St. Anthony where he wintered with the Sioux Indians. In 1767, he joined the party sent by Rogers to find a route to the Pacific. They traveled as far as Grand Portage on Lake Superior, when they were forced to turn back for lack of supplies. This account, based on his journal, includes vivid descriptions of the Wisconsin and Minnesota territories, Indian life and customs, and a short treatise on tobacco. It was tremendously popular in both America and Europe, and is thought to be the first work to mention a large mountain range to the west, presumably the Rocky Mountains. Two copper plates. Octavo. The period calf binding has been expertly rebacked with a new brown leather spine and modern endpapers. The contents are a trifle toned, with some occasional mild soiling and smudging. Period previous owner's ink signature to the title page and two concluding blank leaves. Lacking the folding frontispiece map and the preceding leaves. Howes C215; Sabin 11184. Good. Lu, Ji [original text by] ; Fuchi, Keizan
Kitamura Shirobe c [et al.] An`ei 8 [1779], Kyoto. The earliest Japanese encyclopedia of animals, plants, and products found in `The Classic of Poetry` (`Shijing`, 1046-256 B.C.), China`s oldest collection of poems. Meanings of many terms in the collection were in disuse in China as early as the 3rd century A.D. Realising this, literary critic Lu Ji (261-303) wrote a Chinese encyclopedia on the zoological and botanical words used in `The Classic` to help readers. While Lu`s original text is now lost, Fuchi`s text, with 232 entries and many charming woodblock-printed illustrations, is a copy of Lu`s original text with added commentary and descriptions in Japanese. The first four volumes define animals (and a few mythological creatures) and plants, while the supplementary fifth volume introduces products of the Zhou dynasty culture (i.e. musical instruments, pottery, clothing, and weaponry). DES BARRES, J.F.W. (1721-1824)
[London: British Admiralty for 'The Atlantic Neptune'], 1779. Etching with roulette work, original outline color on laid paper watermarked "JBates" and countermarked "JB" This excellent example of Des Barres' craftsmanship details a portion of the strait between New Brunswick and what is now Prince Edward Island (then St. John's Island). It includes on the New Brunswick side: Shediac, Cocagne and Boutouche. The chart includes soundings throughout the Straits and Baie Verte. This is one of the many regions Des Barres himself surveyed during the 1760's Des Barres, of Swiss-Huguenot extraction, studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before continuing on to the Royal Military College at Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the future legendary explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. From 1762, Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, while his colleague, Samuel Holland charted the New England coast. He also managed to gain access to some surveys of the American South, Cuba and Jamaica. In 1774, Des Barres returned to England where he began work on The Neptune. His dedication to the project was so strong, that often at his own expense, he continually updated and added new charts and views up until 1784. Tha … [Click Below for Full Description]

DES BARRES, J.F.W. (1721-1824)
London: Published by J.F.W. Des Barres in 'The Atlantic Neptune', 1779. Etching with aquatint, printed in sepia.Printed on laid paper with `J Bates' watermark and `JB' countermark. A fine series of profile views of the extraordinary Sable Island, from the remarkable marine atlas 'The Atlantic Neptune'. These views were intended as an aid to navigating the treacherous waters around the island. Sable Island is a 20 mile long crescent of sand, south east of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The island is the last offshore remnant of a time when the sea levels were much lower. It is theorized that the vast mound of sand that forms the island was deposited there by glaciers at the end of the last ice age. The shifting nature of the shoals off the island, allied with treacherous sea currents have meant that, until the invention of modern navigational techniques, it was extremely hazardous to ships. Over 350 wrecks have been recorded since 1583, the most recent in July 1999. [CATON, James]
Bristol, July 20, 1779. folio, 3 + (1)pp., folded for posting with docket title, the docket a little soiled, a few minor spots, unbound. Surrounded by such a band of ruffians, I saw resistance was in vain, and I submitted .....'. P. Farr and T. Millet, who undertook the fatigue of a rapid journey to London, and with so much expedition obtained the writ of Habeas Corpus: - to Edmund Burke, Esq; for his unremitting attention and successful perseverance in my cause .....'.

Contemporary brown calf, rebacked in 20th century with gilt decorated spines with red and black morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers; xvi + 264 pp, 46 illustrations; iv + 240 + [4] pp., 50 illustrations; iv + 287 + [3] pp., 6 engraved plates, 51 illustrations; iv + 294 + [2] pp., 37 illustrations; viii + 432 + [12] pp., 47 illustrations and 1 folding engraved plate; engraved vignette to each title page; all three volumes have the bookplate of Lord Rootes, the Coventry car magnate, to front endpaper, the second also has the bookplate of David Lyons, who built Goring Hall in Sussex in 1840; scuffing to cover, otherwise a very good copy. First French edition. This very important work appeared simultaneously in a German edition entitled Theorie der Gartenkunst. Hirschfield takes as his starting point the contrast between the French and English styles in landscape design, and comes down on the side of English romantic 'nature' parks. He also displays a theoretical approach to garden history that was groundbreaking and which gives his work an enormous significance. His intellectual background was in the rationalism of the Enlightenment, which shows in his discussion of aesthetics, but the approach he adopted to landscape design emphasised the effect of nature on the emotions rather than the more formulaic strategies of his forerunners. This work came to be regarded as indispensable by contemporary gardeners.BAL 1505.#307054
