KAMADA, Natae
Edo: Fujiwara Gyomyō zōhan, 1779. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'New Blade.' "Shintobengi" is a study on Japanese swords published in 1779 by Kamata Natae, a samurai and a sword researcher in the late Edo period. His work is renown among Japanese sword enthusiasts as one of the original works for swords that helped define what distinguished a new sword from an old sword. At the beginning of the book, "Sword theory," he describes his ideas on the appraisal of swords and their differences with earlier periods. It describes the history of swordsmiths and connoisseurs at the end of the book. This rare 1779 first edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades masters as well as the 'hamon,' the pattern created along the edge of the blade in its finale quenching, often considered the most important part of the blade! [Click Below for Full Description]

1779. Très bon exemplaire. Rare. Justice. Droit. [Click Below for Full Description]

Claude de Visdelou, Antoine Galand
J. Neaulme; Nicolas van Daalen, A la Haye [The Hague], 1779. [2], viii, 600 pp. + 5 fold-out tables, folio, quarter brown leather, six raised bands, paste-paper sides; title page printed in red and black, decorative border surrounds the text on each page, uncut. Claude de Visdelou (1656-1737) was a French Jesuit who, as a missionary to China under Louis XIV, gained a deep knowledge of its language, literature and history. This work thus naturally covers China and, quite extensively, a history of Tartary, as well as material supplementary to Barthélemy d’Herbelot’s 1697 landmark work of the same name. Indeed, Visdelou honors d’Herbelot with the latter’s engraved frontispiece portrait. Originally issued as volume 4 to the 1777-79 quarto edition of d’Herbelot, this folio format was produced to perhaps sit side by side with the d’Herbelot 1697 folio, or to even be bound together. Included is a 46-page reprinting of Galand’s collection of Oriental maxims (Les maxims des Orientaux) followed by an extensive index with cross references to the quarto and a later folio edition. (For an excellent discussion of d’Herbelot’s Bibliotheque Orientale, see Alexander Bevilacqua: "How to Organise the Orient: d’Herbelot and the Bibliotheque Orientale," in Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, vol. 79 [2016], pp. 213-261). With the bookplate of The Law Society and a Mendham Collection shelfmark. Interior generally very good, pages clean, edges a little dusty, a few small wormholes; edges of covers and spine worn, head and tail of leather spine chipped, with about a one-inch piece chi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam [but Leipzig], 1779. 8vo, pp. [2], iii-xvi, [5], 6-304, with 12 copper-engraved emblematic vignettes by Hejonagogerus Nugir; slightly foxed in places but a very good copy, uncut in contemporary blue paper boards, gilt red morocco lettering-piece to spine, later ink imprint at foot; from the Charlesworth Masonic Library, with morocco ownership label to upper board and printed shelfmark labels to front pastedown and spine.First edition of a Rosicrucian emblem book with twelve alchemical engravings, signed (most likely pseudonymously) 'Hejonagogerus Nugir', combining Christian tradition with cryptic symbols and Hermetic occultism. A very rare revelation of the rites of the Order of the Golden and Rosy Cross, the Freymäurerische Versammlungsreden were published anonymously in Leipzig, with the 'Amsterdam' false imprint. In his preface the author claims to have bought the detailed transcriptions of masonic gatherings from a local while travelling between Ravenna and Rimini, where a mason had allegedly fallen from a coach at night and been unable to recover his papers. After waiting almost two years in the hope of finding the rightful owner of the texts, the author decided to publish them, despite knowing that they were intended 'nur für geheime Freunde'. An organization of Master Masons for the study of alchemy and promotion of Hermeticism, the Order of the Golden and Rosy Cross was founded in Frankfurt circa 1757 by Hermann Fichtuld, although its origins were claimed to be considerably earlier, and soon grew to be the leading Rosicrucian association, with centres thro … [Click Below for Full Description]
