Album amicorum 1779-1797.

Bound in leather, large 8°-oblong, with ca 35 inscriptions and some watercolours by E.C. Vorwerck. The owner was a young man, probably from Mühlhausen in Germany, who lived in Stockholm from 1779 until March 1783. In April he then traveled via Norköping, Borahs, Göteborg and Helsingborg to Copenhagen (May 1783), and afterwards he went to Amsterdam by boat (June 1783). Finally he traveled to Mühlhausen via Strassbourg (Septembre 1783). The name of this German traveler remains unknown, although the initials N.W. are at the back cover of the book. Perhaps he is adressed once as 'Carolus'. His 'Freund und Bruder' signs himself as 'Samuel Gottfried F[...]kel' (in Breslau) but this might be a brother freemason. Some surnames of the persons that made contributions to the album are: Backhausen, Settelmeyer, Eckhardt, Dettman(s), Weber, Kratzius, Ott, Engelmann, Frembike, Hübner, Mantz, Wasmüht, Moll, Unfraun, Langlet, Singohl, Schirmeister, Borg, Prévot, Pohland, Falkenholm, Valentin, Magnus, Lischgen and Brach. The work is justly celebrated as the first book on Exotic Butterflies arranged in accordance with the Linnean system and provided with coloured plates. Pieter Cramer, died 1777 after the eighth installment was ready for press and the publication was continued by Stoll. "By trade Cramer was a Dutch merchant; his company traded in 'Spanish woolens'(sic). He was a man of some wealth, and he indulged quite lavishly his large cabinet of 'natural curiosities'. Cramer corresponded extensively with fellow butterfly-lovers all over Europe and knew of their collections and publications. He became fascinated by the butterflies of the East and West Indies in particular and purchased many specimens for his own collection. Having decided to start work on his great magnum opus, he employed the Dutch artist Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to paint the specimens both from his own cabinet and many others... some 1,650 different species are illustrated with both the upper und underside of the wings" (P. Gilbert, Butterfly Collectors and Painters p. 56). Throughout the book names of the following owners of Cabinets are mentionned such as: Pieter Boddaert, Houttuin, P. Luchtmans, Prince Willem, Baron van Rengers and many others. The descriptive text is printed in double columns in Dutch and French. A fine copy of one of the most splendid works on butterflies.//Landwehr 53; Nissen ZBI, 985.

He was also a prolific author of botanical books in the latter half of the 18th century. Born in Metz (France), Buchoz was meant for a career in law, but soon turned to medicine, and was appointed as the physician to King Stanislaus of Poland when he was 28. Accused of not fulfilling his duties, Buchoz quit, and devoted his energies to the study of botany, medicine, economics and mineralogy, eventually publishing over 300 volumes on these subjects. Although he is held in low esteem by the scientific botanists, due to his persistence in re-using plates with different attributions, his decorative and artistic sense places him high in the ranks of eighteenth-century flower book authors.

REFLECTIONS On The DOCTRINE Of MATERIALISM And The RELIGIOUS PURPOSES To WHICH MODERN PHILOSOPHERS HAVE APPLIED IT.

Printed for W. Flexney, Holborn,, London: 1779 - Shepherd was a "Church of England clergyman and theological writer, . who matriculated from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, on 1 December 1749 at the age of seventeen. . After considering a military career he took orders in the Church of England and eventually was appointed chaplain to Thomas Thurlow, bishop of Lincoln and later of Durham; Thurlow's nomination gained Shepherd the archdeaconry of Bedford in July 1783. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in May 1781, and in 1788 he was Bampton lecturer at Oxford. In 1792 he was instituted to the rectory of Wetherden and Helmingham in Suffolk by Lord Chancellor Thurlow, brother of the bishop, and he held these preferments until his death.Shepherd published a wide selection of writings, including poetry and drama, although he came to concentrate on theology. His poetry was not unsuccessful: his Ode to Love (1755?) was reprinted in 1760 and The Nuptials (1761) went into three editions. Most of his poetic and dramatic pieces were included in the two-volume Miscellanies (1775). Several of Shepherd's theological works went into two or more editions, including his response to Soame Jenyns in The Review of a Free Enquiry (1759), The Requisition of Subscription to the Thirty-Nine Articles (1771), and Reflections on the Doctrine of Materialism (1779), addressed to Joseph Priestley. Shepherd published regularly throughout his life; his last piece was No False Alarm, or, A Sequel to Religious Union (1808). He died at the parsonage at Wetherden on 3 January 1809." [ODNB]. MIDNIGHT THE SIGNAL

London: Sold by Dodsley, 1779. n. Hardcover. Inveighing against Nocturnal Diversions. 165 x 102 mm (6 1/2 x 4"). Complete, with usual jump in pagination in volume II. Two volumes. Pleasant contemporary crimson morocco bound for Jonas Hanway by his second binder, covers gilt with twining border enclosing a frame of roses with sunburst cornerpieces, upper cover with Greek cross at center, encircled by the motto "O save us from ourselves," lower cover with winged hourglass and the motto "Revere the appointment of Nature"; raised bands, spine compartments gilt in a checkerboard pattern punctuated by daisies, one olive and one black morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Engraved title pages with emblem depicting Death hovering over socializing persons, with a lutist in the background. A Large Paper Copy. Verso of front free endpapers with armorial bookplate from which the name has been excised. Spines a bit darkened, with muted gilt, leather on covers varying in color (from fading or soiling), but the bindings entirely solid and with only trivial wear to the joints. Leaves with a hint of offsetting and isolated soiling, faint dampstain to lower fore edge of one gathering, otherwise extremely pleasing internally, the text clean, fresh, and bright, and with vast margins. These bindings were specially crafted for Jonas Hanway (1712-86), an eccentric philanthropist and prolific pamphleteer who designed custom bindings for edifying works, usually his own, which he often presented to libraries, friends, and even the king; our binding was, in fact, probably intended for presentation, though the recipient is unknown. In his "English Bindings in the Library of J. R. Abbey," G. D. Hobson has done a census of 26 Hanway bindings, but the present one is not listed there. Hobson states that Hanway has been unjustly overlooked, whereas another 18th century eccentric "who took an interest in the art of decorating bookcovers, Thomas Hollis, has appeared in every account of English binding" after J. A. Arnett's "The Books of the Ancients" appeared in 1837. "The bindings executed for [Hanway] are of better material," says Hobson, "and the tools which decorate them are more amusing than those of his contemporary; perhaps they have been neglected because they are comparatively rare." Hanway employed two different binders to translate his ideas into leather, and the present volumes represent the work of his second binder, who entered his employ in 1765. This binder has not been identified by name, but his work is known, as here, by the appearance of a small number of tools used in various combinations. For example, our winged hourglass, rose ornaments, twining roll, sunburst, and checkerboard design on the spine also appear on Hobson's "Abbey" #91 and on item #155 in Maggs Catalogue 1212. An enthusiastic and effective philanthropist concerned with child welfare, Hanway founded schools to teach boys farming, trades, and seamanship. He also wrote some 150 books and pamphlets, and perhaps his reputation as an eccentric derived from his being the first male in London to use an umbrella. Nixon notes in "Oldaker Collection" that he was "a highly estimable character, but one of the greatest bores of his day." An advocate of such practices as the consumption of whole wheat bread and abstinence from tea drinking, he inveighs in the present work against "nocturnal diversions" and the keeping of late hours. Midnight should be the signal to end dancing, music, and other amusements, if one wishes to preserve one's health and virtue. Thankfully, the author's bindings remain more interesting than the written works he produced.

A Voyage to New Guinea, and the Moluccas, from Balambangan : Including an account of Magindano, Sooloo, and other Islands... performed in the Tartar galley, belonging to the honourable East India Company

London: G. Scott, 1779. Quarto, with a portrait and a splendid series of 32 plates and maps, most of them folding or double-page; a large copy with good margins (a couple of plates just touched by binder at extreme edges nonetheless, as often); some occasional light browning but a very handsome copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, expertly rebacked to style preserving original spine label. Significant English voyage to New Guinea. First edition: a handsome copy of this classic account of experiences in New Guinea and the East Indies. Forrest was involved in the 1770 settlement of Balambangan, a colonising project based on recommendations by Alexander Dalrymple; from 1774 he was in the service of the East India Company, who wanted to extend their sources of trade in the direction of New Guinea. Along with two English officers and a crew of eighteen Malays Forrest pushed the exploration as far as Geelvink Bay in New Guinea. Here he gives the details of his 'journey of exploration from 1774-1776, on behalf of the East India Company, to western New Guinea (now the Indonesian province of West Papua). The Company traveled in search of spices beyond the Molucca Islands, which were then claimed by the Dutch. Forrest's travels took him from the north coast of Borneo, through the Moluccas, to New Guinea, and then to Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines. His detailed observations lack the moral judgments found in so many other European accounts of the time…' (Cornell University, {i Treasures of the Asia Collections }- online resource). The numerous maps and coastal profiles published here show the detailed observations that Forrest was making on this voyage 'of examination and inquiry rather than of discovery' (Hill). There is some discussion, in the Introduction and elsewhere, of the voyages of Schouten and Le Maire, Dampier and Tasman. A wonderfully purple dedication on the first of the topographical views is worth quoting in full: 'In Testimony of Esteem & Regard to Joseph Banks Esq; President of the Royal Society, Who thirsting after Knowledge, left the Enjoyment of Opulence and Ease, to sail round the World'. This fine copy of the book has the bookplate of George Leaton of Hoppyland Park (the location of a great 19th century adultery scandal). It later belonged to the Australian collector Sir Rupert Clarke and has his bookplate and ink ownership stamps.

[Bound Manuscript]: Qui casse les Verres les paye [Who breaks the glasses must pay for them] Comedie-Proverbe en un acte, en prose

[Paris]. 1779. Octavo. 43pp. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt stamped morocco spine label, gilt tooling, marbled endpapers. The front joint is partially cracked, light scuffing to the boards, about near fine. A complete unpublished play by Louis Claude Person de Berainville, skillfully written in a beautiful calligraphic script. Set in a Paris prison with Picard, a coachman, in the lead role, and eight other personages: Madame Picard, Casseborne, Martin, a jailer, an inspector, two soldiers, and a corporal. There appears to be only one reference anywhere to this play -- French scholar Clarence Brenner, author of the definitive Bibliographical List of Plays in the French Language, 1700-1789, cites the play in his study of the French dramatic proverb: "a manuscript of which, dated 1779, was advertised in a catalogue, Les Arts du Spectacle of the Librairie Garnier Arnold, Paris, 1961," (i.e., the conference catalog of the fifth Congres International de Biblioteques-Musees des Arts du Spectacle that took place in Paris in June, 1961). We believe the present manuscript to be the same copy last noted in 1961. This 18th Century French proverb play appears to be otherwise unknown and unstudied. 1779 - Pierre Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807) Les Dons Merveilleux et Diversement Coloriés de la Nature dans Le Règne Vègètale Paris” 1779-1783 Hand-colored copperplate engravings Sheet size: 18 ½” x 11 ¼” Pierre Joseph Buchoz (also spelled Buc'hoz) was a French lawyer, physician, botanist and naturalist and was very interested in the medicinal virtues of various plants.

Excellent, iconic portrait of American naval officer and hero John Paul Jones (1747-1792).Jones is depicted three-quarter length, in uniform, holding a telescope in his right arm. Jones is considered America's most famous naval hero of the Revolution, and the British reviled him as a pirate because of his raids along the Irish coast and his bold attack on the British port of Whitehaven. - This noted merchant, land speculator, canal and agricultural promoter and businessman began as a Revolutionary War patriot who acted as courier for George Washington and others; in 1779 he was sent to France with dispatches for Benjamin Franklin; by 1789 he was an Albany businessman and one of the founders of the Bank of Albany; in 1791, together with Jeremiah Van Rensselaer, Stephen Bayard and Philip Van Cordtlandt, he explored western New York to purchase land and explore the idea of a canal connecting the Hudson River with Lake Erie -- making him one of the originators of the idea of the Erie Canal. ALS, 2pp, 7½" X 12½", New York, NY, 1798 June 22. Addressed to "Dear friend" -- Jeremiah Van Rensselaer (1738-1810) of the influential Van Rensselaer family, a New York representative, president of the Bank of Albany from 1798-1806, lieutenant governor from 1801-04. Very good. Light age toning. Superb content, mainly concerning various financial matters. In part: " I know you have no Confidence in Perkins Points -- But Our Old [ ? ] has no Rest without their Aid every Evng. -- this is proof in Point -- So let me advise you to borrow a Set -- & have yourself Well Stroked. The Ill Natured Mac Grigor has absolutely Refused to pay Nobles draft. But I am happy to add, Mr. Noble will be with you Next Week & will positively pay it. I am distressed to Death for Mony -- Mony -- & if I Could git the House off my Hands, I Should Risk Seriously of Quitting Here -- What think you of Hudson -- or Poughkipsie?" Intriguing, if cryptic: "Those best acquainted I find Viced [vexed?] with the utmost horror at impending Fate -- GOD only knows -- but we deserve & will surely be Severely Chastised -- Let me beg you will Still keep my old friend Richard the Prophet in Sight -- compare events & appearances with his predictions." Fascinating if at times cryptic -- worthy of further research. Very scarce. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
