Exemplaire très frai, relié sur brochure, à toute marge Crabtree [10 : "A foundational work in the history of modern psychology.         Revolutionary War

July 4, 1779. (American Revolution: Manufacturing Munitions) Manuscript Document Signed "Jonth Dimon Lt Colo", one page, quarto (7.75" x 7.25"), Fairfield, [Connecticut], July 4, 1779, an invoice for funds due veteran Gershom Hubbel for "running Balls" and "making cartridges". Hubbell was a former prisoner of war (captured at Fort Washington) who following his exchange decided to remain out of active service. Instead he performed work in support of his former comrades, many of whom are mentioned on this document including Elisha Bradley, Sergeant Stephen Stratton, Ensign George Burr. All of these men, together with Hubbell served in a militia company commanded by Dimon in May 1775. Gershom Hubbell (1732-1802) served as a Lieutenant in Capt. Dimon's Compnay from Fairfield in May 1775. Hubbell also Served as a member of Captain Abel's Company in Bradley's Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade From June 20 to Nov. 16, 1776. According to the records he was taken prisoner at Fort Washington. According to pension records he was born on July 29, 1729 in Fairfield Co. and served in Abel's company for 2 years beginning May 1776. He married in 1769 to Sarah St. John and died on April 14, 1802. According the pension narrative of the widow of Ichabod Perry, another member of Abel's company, was imprisoned aboard a ship in New York after the fall of Ft. Washington and was paroled in February 1777 and exchanged in May. Arron Bennitt, another member of that company, was also captured at Fort Washington, and his narrative reports he was paroled in late January 1777 for eight months. Jonathan Dimon was from Fairfield and began as a Captain of his own Fairfield Company in May 1775. He served in the Connecticut militia in the 4th Regiment commanded by Col. Gold S. Silliman of Fairfield from May 1775 to October 1776, and then by Col. Samuel Whiting from October 1776 to 1780. Dimon assumed command 1780 and continued in that position to 1782. It is interesting to note here that Hubbell also charged the state for the services of his son as an express rider. A fascinating document illustrating the small-scale domestic industry which proved indispensable to supplying American forces during the Revolutionary War.Light toning, slightly irregular margins, else fine condition.

(volume I).

One of a pair of engravings after Jakob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807). The view shows the ruins of the bridge of Augustus over the River Nera with the hill-top town of Narni visible in the background. Jacob Philipp or Johann Philipp Hackert was born in Prenzlau. He travelled extensively within Europe and was one of a group of artists who achieved a notable degree of success with their images of picturesque landscapes. He spent a great deal of his time in Italy, particularly Rome, Florence and Naples. He worked both for Catherine the Great of Russia and for King Ferdinand of Naples. His brother Georg Hackert (1755-1805) accompanied him to Naples and set up as an engraver and print-seller in 1786. Etching, in very good condition.

- 4°, modern stiff vellum, manuscript title and date written vertically on spine. Minor repairs to final printed leaf and terminal blank leaf, without loss. Clean and crisp. In very good condition overall. (1 l.), 43 pp., (1 blank l.). A-F . Text with the Manifiesto and Exposicion in 2 parallel columns. *** First separate edition in Spanish - apparently preceded by publication in the Gazeta de Madrid of August 20, 1779 - and the first to contain the lengthy commentary outlining the position of the Spanish government. This important document consists of two texts: the French government's justification of its support for American independence (here in Spanish translation), and a much longer commentary justifying Spain's declaration of war against England on June 21, 1779. Spain's grievances (English harassment of its shipping and encroachment on its American possessions) are summarized. Most of the commentary, however, details Spanish attempts over the preceding year to mediate an Anglo-French truce and de facto English recognition of American independence.Originally published in Paris in July, 1779 under the title Exposé des motifs de la conduite du Roi de France, relativement à l'Angleterre, the French text was quickly reprinted in several journals and in other pamphlet editions, both in Paris and in Madrid. An English translation appeared in The Annual Register for 1779 as well as in pamphlet form. Edward Gibbon replied on behalf of the British government in his Mémoire justificatif pour servir de réponse à l'Exposé, published in London the same year in English and French editions.*** Palau 148724: citing also a Barcelona, 1779 reprint. Sabin 44282. Not in JFB, Howes, or Streeter sale. Cf. Adams, The American Controversy 79-38 and 79-45 for the various French and English editions. Copac cites only the Barcelon 1779 reprint, at British Library. Not located in Melvyl.         A View of the Hulks, at Woolwich in Kent, with some of the Convicts heaving up Ballast, and others on Show wheeling it to the Places where the Embankments are made by them

Printed & Sold by Carington Bowles, Published as the Act directs, London 1779 - Handcoloured engraving, 360 x 505 mm. in fine original condition, mounted. Earliest issue of this fascinating depiction with vibrant contemporary handcolouring of convicts from the hulks labouring on the dockyards at Woolwich on the river Thames. The use of derelict ships as floating prisons really began with the loss of the American colonies following the War of Independence. The hulks were unpopular, but as this image vividly shows, they were considered a source of useful prison labour: a description of Woolwich in 1785 by Duncan Campbell, a contractor and overseer of the hulks, corresponds to this scene, with particular notice of convicts raising gravel for ballast and construction, sawing timber and constructing earthworks and embankments. The departure of the First Fleet under Captain Arthur Philip and the foundation of a penal colony in New South Wales in 1788 was largely motivated by chronic overcrowding of the Thames hulks, but actually did little to alleviate conditions; indeed, it has been established that around the time that the Fleet sailed 'the hulk establishments at Portsmouth and Woolwich were expanded because of the demand for labour in the dockyards' (A.G.L. Shaw, Convicts and the Colonies, p. 49).This is an example of the earliest and rare issue "Printed for & Sold by Carington Bowles, at his Map and Print Warehouse, No. 69 in St. Pauls Church Yard, London"and "Published as the Act directs, 24 June, 1779". This can be compared with later examples in both the State Library of New South Wales and the National Library, which have a different caption and imprint for "Bowles & Carver" at the same address. Carington Bowles was a print and mapseller principally associated with the sale of local travelling maps and town guides. He died in 1793 and after his death the business passed to his son Henry Carington Bowles who is known to have gone into business with Samuel Carver in the premises at St. Pauls. A View of the Hulks, at Woolwich in Kent, with some of the Convicts heaving up Ballast, and others on Show wheeling it to the Places where the Embankments are made by them

London: Printed & Sold by Carington Bowles, Published as the Act directs, 1779. Small expert paper repair to lower margin,. Handcoloured engraving, 360 x 505 mm. in fine original condition, mounted. Pauls.

        Revolutionary War

, 1779. 1779. Book: Considerations upon the American Enquiry, 55pp, 5" x 8.5", antique half calf. A very critical study of the British army under General Howe's command, and of the commanders themselves. "Jonathan Boucher attributed this to Joseph Galloway on his copy of the third edition, now in the Bodleian Library. The attribution to Sir Robert Dallas (1756-1824), who was twenty-three years of age at the time, seems less likely. He had been admitted as a student at Lincoln's Inn only two years before and was not called to the bar until 1783. On the other hand, the author of this tract displays a familiarity with both political and military affairs in America going back to the early stages of the dispute, and he takes a position that is consistent with the one known to be held by Galloway". Very good. Howe was engaged in the American Revolution (1776-78); defeated the Americans on Long Island (1776); captured New York City and defeated the Americans at White Plains and Brandywine (1776).

An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of the Colonies of South Carolina and Georgia.

Alexander Donaldson, London 1779 - Two volumes: [16 incl. final blank leaf] 347 pp.; [10] 329 [last p. mis-numbered 309] pp. Three-quarter calf over marbled boards with blind rules in the leather where it abuts the boards. Spines have five raised bands, and gilt lettering and decoration. End papers marbled. Edges stained red that matches marbling. Two different decorative bookplates neatly pasted on the front paste downs and ffeps: Charles C. Jones, Jr ("Vince Malem Bono") and C. l. F. Robinson of Newport, R. I. ("Virtute Non Verbis"). A bookseller's inventory number sticker on front paste downs. At the very top of the title pages (not affecting text) a printed identification has been inked out and the name M. Read added. Corners are bumped and extremities rubbed with boards exposed. Some scratches and scuffs generally to the leather, but lettering on spine is sharp and legible. Some scuffs to page edges. Binding and text block are very tight and solid. The pages are generally toned and foxed as expected for a book from this period. The text is remarkably clean and legible throughout. The last two blank pages of Vol. II have pencil notes in tiny and very neat script referring to pages of interest in the text. Alexander Hewatt (Hewat) (1739-1824) was a Scottish-born Presbyterian minister who presided in a Charleston, South Carolina church from 1763 to 1777, when his property was seized and he was expelled for being a loyalist. Considered the earliest and best account of Colonial South Carolina and Georgia. His book remains important to this day because it is based on his own observations, a first-hand source, as well as his research. He discussed the immigration of British, French and other European migrants because of religious persecution and the lives and economy they created in the Carolinas. He described in detail the customs and lives of Native Americans of the region. He also deals with the introduction of African slaves and the institution of slavery which he opposed. An exceptionally nice set of this very scarce history. Howes H452 ("Earliest history of this region."); Sabin 31630. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[FREYCINET] A series of manuscript preparatory notes for the Annales Maritimes et Coloniales, 1833

The great French navigator Louis de Freycinet (1779-1841) sailed with Baudin on his famous expedition in Australian waters (1800-1803), and his map, subsequently published in 1811 in Péron's Voyage de découvertes aux terres australes, was the first to show a complete outline of the coastline of Australia. He later circumnavigated the globe in the Uranie in 1817-1820 - one of the most important scientific voyages of the nineteenth century. Comparison with other manuscript material by Freycinet which we have previously handled confirms the attribution of these documents. These preparory notes for journal articles were written in 1833, when Freycinet was an experienced and well-established authority on all matters relating to navigation and hydrography. The group of manuscripts includes the following: [1] Rapport sur les méthodes de Mr Richard, pour avoir la longitude. Three single sheets enclosed in a folded folio sheet, the front cover with a note in another (contemporary) hand identifying Freycinet as the author of the article and dating it 1833; four pages of manuscript notations demonstrating the calculation of geographical longitude. Three drafts of the same article, manuscript in ink on folded folio paper. Two of the drafts with considerable editing and small tears to margins, the third clean and legible. The article concerns the so-called 'Longimètre', a navigational device designed by Mr Andral. Two drafts of the same article, manuscript in ink on recto and verso of single sheets of paper (one draft including a folio sheet, folded to create four pages). Each copy comprises 6 pages of handwriting. Manuscript in ink on folio sheet, folded to create four pages (detached for the most part at fold), heavily edited; small tears to lower margin (not affecting legibility); browning and fading due to age; otherwise well-preserved. [5] Le premier objet... Untitled draft article for the Annales Maritimes et Coloniales. Manuscript in ink on folio sheet, folded to create four pages, text heavily edited; browning and fading due to age, very minor tears to outer edges (not affecting legibility); otherwise well-preserved. [6] Invention très utile et très importante... Untitled draft article for the Annales Maritimes et Coloniales. Manuscript in ink on verso of single sheet of paper, writing heavily edited; minimal edgewear, slight browning due to age; otherwise well-preserved and legible. The Annales Maritimes et Coloniales, which first appeared in 1816, was a monthly publication produced by the Ministry of Marine and the Colonies. The Annales gathered a significant amount of data relating to navigation, naval policy and voyages and exploration during the nineteenth century, aiming to serve the interests of the Navy, as well as to fulfil a utilitarian function for naval officers, captains, sailors and other maritime experts. These contributions from Freycinet, a respected authority in the field of navigation, reflect the rigorous and almost encyclopaedic aims of the Annales. Freycinet was admitted into the French Academy of Sciences in 1825, and was one of the founders of the Paris Geographical Society. Provenance: the family of Louis de Freycinet, thence by descent.

Backer & Sommervogel III, 332 (6). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A Youth Rescued from a Shark

1779]. 1779 - Hand-coloured mezzotint (measuring 462 by 598 mm) cut within original platemark to the edges of the image, mounted on larger sheet (measuring 568 by 710 mm) with a watercolour border. A few small stains to the print, very good otherwise. Larger sheet is slightly dust-soiled and has some minor closed tears to the margins. We cannot provide the state, as the lettering (found below the image in untrimmed examples) is not present. [London, A remarkable mezzotint, made by arguably the best British engraver of the period, after Copley?s dramatic painting. When Watson and the Shark was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778, it generated a sensation, partly because such a grisly subject was an absolute novelty. In 1749, 14-year-old Brook Watson had been attacked by a shark while swimming in Havana harbour. Copley?s pictorial account of the traumatic ordeal shows nine seamen rushing to help the boy, while the bloody water proves he has just lost his right foot. To lend equal believability to the setting, Copley, who had never visited the Caribbean, consulted maps and prints of Cuba. The rescuers? anxious expressions and actions reveal both concern for their imperilled companion and a growing awareness of their own peril. Time stands still as the viewer is forced to ponder Watson?s fate. Miraculously, he was saved from almost certain death and went on to become a successful British merchant, soldier and later Lord Mayor of London. Although Copley successfully created a scene of extreme tension and immediacy, the seemingly spontaneous poses were actually based on art historical precedents. The harpooner?s pose, for example, recalls Raphael?s altarpiece of the Archangel Michael using a spear to drive Satan out of heaven. The oil painting?s enormous acclaim ensured Copley?s appointment to the prestigious Royal Academy and was reproduced in several engravings, bringing the image to a wider audience and further popularising its appeal. Green, who was Britain?s most skilled proponent of mezzotint engraving, produced three plates of Copley?s work; all of which display his marvellous adeptness at the translation of paint into print.

        Revolutionary War

July 4, 1779. (American Revolution: Manufacturing Munitions) Manuscript Document Signed <I>"Jonth Dimon Lt Colo"</I>, one page, quarto (7.75" x 7.25"), Fairfield, [Connecticut], July 4, 1779, an invoice for funds due veteran Gershom Hubbel for <I>"running Balls"</I> and <I>"making cartridges"</I>.
