1778. Antique print, titled: 'Les Isles Britanniques ' - A map of the British Isles, with a small edge of the Netherlands. Outline hand coloured engraving on laid paper. Description: "Nouvel Atlas Portatif destine principalement sur l'Etude de la Geographie par le S.Robert Vaugondy a Paris 1778 de la Societe Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres de Nancy et Conseur Royal", Paris: S. Robert Vaugondy, 1778. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'E. Dussy' after 'Robert de Vaugondy'. We have found little about E. Dussy. A Paris draughtsman and map engraver, active 1754-1784, best known for his long collaboration with the Vaugondy's. The cartouches on the maps are engraved by Groux and Arrivet. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c.1723-1786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. Charles Francois Delamarche (1740-1817) founded the important and prolific Paris based Maison Delamarche map publishing firm in the late 18th century. A lawyer by trade Delamarche entered the map business with the acquisition from Jean-Baptiste Fortin of Robert de Vaugondy's map plates and copyrights and later addes many plates from other sources as well. Charles Delamarche eventually passed control of the firm to his son Felix Delamarche (18th C. - 1st half 19th C.) and geographer Charles Dien (1809-1870). It was later passed on to Alexandre Delamarche, who revised and reissued several Delamarche publications in the mid-19th century. The firm continued to publish maps and globes until the middle par … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BEAUMARCHAIS, P.A. CARON DE.)
No place, 1778. 74 pp. 8vo. Sewn, old blind covers with stamp of the Fürstlich-Starhemberg'sche Familien Bibliothek, Schloß Eferding. Not in Cordier, Bibliographie des Oeuvres de Beaumarchais; Sabin 4178; Fay 11 (listing the first edition only); Echeverria & Wilkie 778/7; Muller 1585; Howes B.290; Tchemerzine-Scheler, i, 511 (without collation); Echeverria, p. 68; not in JFBL; not in Leclerc. Second issue of the first edition according to Echeverria & Wilkie. One of the rarest anti-british publications of the period. The aim was to present Britain as having imperialistic plans and to support the independence of the Americans. Beaumarchais was an ardent defender of American liberty and American independence and was instrumental in getting the French involved on the American side in the war. He was also allowed to help setting up a fictitious business called Rodrigue Hortalez and Company which was being used to funnel secret aid (guns, amunitions, clothes, etc.) to the rebelling army. This policy came to fruition in 1777 when John Burgoyne's 's army capitulated at Saratoga to a rebel force largely clothed and armed by the supplies Beaumarchais had been sending; it marked a personal triumph for him. Beaumarchais was injured in a carriage accident while racing into Paris with news of Saratoga.

The work established once and for all that basalt, a rock important scientifically because of its distinctive characteristics, its widespread occurence, and the manner of its association with other kinds of rocks, was the product of volcanic action" (DSB).
NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
