Revolutionary War letter written by observant British Naval Officer aboard the HMS Blonde, with extensive content about capturing American ships

Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1778. 7.875" x 12.875". "ALS penned by Lieutenant Edward Down of the H.M.S. Blonde to his wife Mary, handwritten in precise and elegant cursive on watermarked cream paper. 3pp bifold letter measures approximately 7.875" x 12.875" and is dated May 17, 1778 from aboard the Blonde in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The letter is a duplicate copy annotated with the date, location, and an internal numbering system. In very to extra fine condition, with expected wear including fold marks, and blank infilled top to third page. Comes with weathered address leaf addressed to "Mrs. Down, Ilfracombe near Barnstaple, Devon", with various philatelic markings and partial red wax seal.Down addresses his letter to "My dear Life", as he called Mary, who lived in southwestern England with at least five children, Will, James, Edward, Sally, and Mary. While Down discusses domestic matters, his letters are also extremely informative. He updates his wife about the H.M.S. Blonde and her activities, often giving precise accounts of movements, the capture of enemy vessels, and even the weather. Please see below for letter excerpt with uncorrected spelling and grammar errors:BlondeMay 17th 78" ... it is the general Complaint in America of the Miscarriage of Letters ... on the 5th April retook a Brig from Cork with Provisions, on the 8th took a Brig from Salem in Ballast, on the 21st a Brig from Bilboa for Boston, on the 23d a Sloop Privateer 6 Guns and 30 Men, the same night a brig Privateer of 10 Guns surrenderd to us but a thick fog and blowing weather coming on, she got away, the next day, we drove on Shore in Liverpoole Bay a French frigate call'd Le Duc de Choseil of 24 Guns and 120 Men, loaded with Arms, Cloathing &c for Boston, we were very unfortunate in not being able to get her off, had we carried her into Halifax, my Share would have been full fifteen Hundred Pounds, we got out of her five thousand stand of Arms, as many suits of Cloathing, Twelve Brass, and thirty two Iron Cannon, and many other Articles, she had on board a great quantity of Tea, Silks, Cambricks, &c which the Saltwater damaged so much as to be of no Service to us. They had the presumption to engage us for a short time, but after having eight of their Men Kill'd, and as many wounded, they submitted, thus ends our Cruize, now for all these Prizes, I don't expect to get more than 250£, had they been carried to any other port suppose it would have been double that Sum"."I hope your Sweetmeats are preserv'd. I got out of the french Ship a few Jars, very excellent, and a great Variety which shall send by the first conveyance to Bristol, likewise two pieces of Chintz for Gowns. They were design'd for some American fair one, poor Lady, it will be no small Disappointment"."I am much indebted to Governor Arbuthnot for his great Civilities, frequently dine with him, he is soon to be recall'd being appointed an Admiral and I think it not all unlikely that I shall return to England with him, and be again under his command"."The Blonde, now Clean, is the first sailing Frigate in America".Edward Down served as a lieutenant on the H.M.S. Blonde, a ship confiscated from the French in February 1760 during the Battle of Bishop's Court during the Seven Years' War. Following its capture, the Blonde was outfitted as a 32-gun fifth-rate frigate in the British Royal Navy, meaning it was in the next to highest class for a fighting vessel. Typically, frigates of this class were double-deckers, ranged between 700 and 1450 tons, and had about 215-294 crew members including marines. Fifth-rate frigates were often fast and well-armed, and were frequently dispatched on special assignments to interrupt enemy shipping. Although there was considerable risk in serving on a fifth-rate frigate like the Blonde, there was also considerable opportunity, as crew members received shares of the profits depending on their rank.Down mentions some important individuals in his letters, like "Governor Arbuthnot" or Mariot Arbuthnot (1711-1794) here. This seasoned war veteran served as the naval commissioner at Halifax during the earlier part of the American Revolution, and was appointed commander-in-chief of the North American station only a year after Down's letter was written. Nova Scotia was the target of American as well as foreign navies during the Revolutionary War. The Royal Navy maintained a presence at Halifax to doubly protect its settlements and harass its harassers. Down mentions prize money frequently throughout his letters. The Blonde intercepted American and French vessels carrying arms, fabric, tea, foodstuffs, and lumber from Europe, the Caribbean, and the colonies. Confiscated goods were sold at Halifax, where Down often complained they were sold at a depressed value. Lieutenants were second only to the ship captain in how much prize money they collected by size of share. His letters to Mary carefully record his various winnings, as he had a large family to support.Down's whereabouts are unknown after the winter of 1779. We might assume, however, that this career naval officer was still aboard the Blonde during the rest of the American Revolution. About three years after this last letter was written, the Blonde was shipwrecked off Nova Scotia's southeastern tip at Seal Island (now known as Blonde Island). The Blonde's British crew as well as sixty American prisoners were rescued by Captain Noah Stoddard, an American privateer. The Blonde's crew were allowed to embark the H.M.S. Observer, a vessel that was shortly engaged in the Battle of Halifax while en route to port. If Edward Down was aboard the Observer at this time, the chances that he was wounded or killed were very small; three British were killed and five wounded in the battle with the American privateer Jack. The odds of survival for other frigates were not very good, as the majority were wrecked, burnt, or captured by war's end.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which was then followed by two series of pyrotechnical shots and music, dan

B.M. Gough, Britain, Canada and the North Pacific: maritime enterprise and dominion, 1778-1914, p. 94. The book is divided into three chapters: the first dealing with the eastern entrance of the strait up to Punta Arenas (Sandy Point), the second with the strait from Punta Arenas to the west, and the third with the various channels west of Chili, the so-called Gulf of Peñas. Mentioned are the different bays, channels, reefs, rivers, capes, islands, ports etc., with comments on the weather, anchorages, and even occasionally details about the native inhabitants of the region. With a manuscript note and stamps. Only slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing, overall in very good condition.         Vaso di marmo

1778 - Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1778, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Etching and engraving, circa 1778, signed at lower right. Magnificent proof, with good contrast and sharp details, printed on contemporary laid paper, with "Bracciano" watermark (Robison 59), wide margins, in very good conditions.         Veduta dell'Arco di Benevento nel Regno di Napoli

1778 - - PRIMO STATO DI QUATTRO - Acquaforte e bulino, 1778 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. - THE FIRST STATE OF FOUR - Etching and engraving, 1778, signed on plate at the lower left. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB", with margins, very good condition. The view of Benevento was made after the return from Paestum, 1778. So is one of the latest Piranesi's work and it's very rare to found it in the contemporary edition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. Hind 135 I/IV, Focillon 823.

Map Forum 1, p. 58. Dimensioni: 1280x1300. Geographic wall map, made of 12 sheets yet to be joined together. Taken from Zatta’s Atlante Novissimo published in Venice between 1778 and 1782. The map is based on J. Mitchell’s, which was used to establish the borders of the colonies during the peace treaty of Paris in 1783, after the Independence War, becoming henceforth the first, official map of the United States. Zatta’s map is the first, Italian edition of this legendary map; it has been realized in the characteristic eighteenth-century Venetian style, including also a cartouche depicting the map of the Bermuda Islands. Nevertheless, the map of Zatta differs quite a lot from its prototype for it shows many geographic details which were inferred from other cartographic sources. For instance, the State of Virginia derives from the 1753 map of Fry and Jefferson, while around the cities of Saratoga, Philadelphia and Charleston there are some information about the independence war. Noteworthy is also the fact that this is one of the first maps to define the British colonies the "United Colonies". Copper engraving, contemporary outline colour, in excellent condition. Sabin 68109; Stephenson, A la Carte, p. 113; cf P 650, 651. Map Forum 1, p. 58. Dimensioni: 1280x1300. Dimensioni [Attributes: First Edition]

File of Incoming Letters to Merchant and Ship Owner Benjamin Delano (and Joshua Delano) Kingston, MA, 1799 - 1861.

The Delanos were a prominent Massachusetts family of merchants and ship owners. Benjamin Delano, 1778 - 1868, was an important member of the family. Delano's Wharf, built by him in 1803, still stands today. This is a file of eighty-five letters to Benjamin (and Joshua) Delano from forty-five individuals - ship captains, other merchants, agents, lawyers, and business partners - from locations up and down the east coast, between Halifax, NS and New Orleans, LA. Subjects include prices current, availability and disposition of various cargoes, charter parties, ship building and repair, reports on labor, sailing and political conditions, financial arrangements, and the myriad situations that occurred over half a century of trading activity. Cargoes mentioned include fish, timber, corn, cotton, molasses, cement, and coal. The series begins in a rather startling manner in 1799, with a letter returned to Joshua Delano, in which he has placed an ad in the local newspaper stating that "my wife has imprudently absconded from my bed & board," and urging mutual friends to "not pay one cent she may contract on my account." He receives legal and personal advice, and the incident fades into history. One of Delano's captains and business partners, Jacob Fuller, gets into a squabble with the British in Halifax, causing a minor international incident. There is a letter here from Delano's Washington agent, as well as several earlier letters from Fuller. Communications continue right up to the beginning of the Civil War, when an ominous note appears in the correspondence. In October 1860 Capt. Linel Churchill writes Delano, "Somebody had better stir up the Negroes." Two months later Capt. Levi Morton writes from the Mississippi Delta, "There is such a feeling here on account of politicks that it is almost impossible to do business." The letters in this series cease a month later, with Morton and "a large fleet" ready to sail to the West Indies. The letters are all legible and in good to very good condition, many with integral covers, some with unusual stampless covers.
