Veduta dell'Arco di Benevento nel Regno di Napoli

1778 - - PRIMO STATO DI QUATTRO - Acquaforte e bulino, 1778 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. - THE FIRST STATE OF FOUR - Etching and engraving, 1778, signed on plate at the lower left. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB", with margins, very good condition. The view of Benevento was made after the return from Paestum, 1778. So is one of the latest Piranesi's work and it's very rare to found it in the contemporary edition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. Hind 135 I/IV, Focillon 823.

Map Forum 1, p. 58. Dimensioni: 1280x1300. Geographic wall map, made of 12 sheets yet to be joined together. Taken from Zatta’s Atlante Novissimo published in Venice between 1778 and 1782. The map is based on J. Mitchell’s, which was used to establish the borders of the colonies during the peace treaty of Paris in 1783, after the Independence War, becoming henceforth the first, official map of the United States. Zatta’s map is the first, Italian edition of this legendary map; it has been realized in the characteristic eighteenth-century Venetian style, including also a cartouche depicting the map of the Bermuda Islands. Nevertheless, the map of Zatta differs quite a lot from its prototype for it shows many geographic details which were inferred from other cartographic sources. For instance, the State of Virginia derives from the 1753 map of Fry and Jefferson, while around the cities of Saratoga, Philadelphia and Charleston there are some information about the independence war. Noteworthy is also the fact that this is one of the first maps to define the British colonies the "United Colonies". Copper engraving, contemporary outline colour, in excellent condition. Sabin 68109; Stephenson, A la Carte, p. 113; cf P 650, 651. Map Forum 1, p. 58. Dimensioni: 1280x1300. Dimensioni [Attributes: First Edition]

File of Incoming Letters to Merchant and Ship Owner Benjamin Delano (and Joshua Delano) Kingston, MA, 1799 - 1861.

The Delanos were a prominent Massachusetts family of merchants and ship owners. Benjamin Delano, 1778 - 1868, was an important member of the family. Delano's Wharf, built by him in 1803, still stands today. This is a file of eighty-five letters to Benjamin (and Joshua) Delano from forty-five individuals - ship captains, other merchants, agents, lawyers, and business partners - from locations up and down the east coast, between Halifax, NS and New Orleans, LA. Subjects include prices current, availability and disposition of various cargoes, charter parties, ship building and repair, reports on labor, sailing and political conditions, financial arrangements, and the myriad situations that occurred over half a century of trading activity. Cargoes mentioned include fish, timber, corn, cotton, molasses, cement, and coal. The series begins in a rather startling manner in 1799, with a letter returned to Joshua Delano, in which he has placed an ad in the local newspaper stating that "my wife has imprudently absconded from my bed & board," and urging mutual friends to "not pay one cent she may contract on my account." He receives legal and personal advice, and the incident fades into history. One of Delano's captains and business partners, Jacob Fuller, gets into a squabble with the British in Halifax, causing a minor international incident. There is a letter here from Delano's Washington agent, as well as several earlier letters from Fuller. Communications continue right up to the beginning of the Civil War, when an ominous note appears in the correspondence. In October 1860 Capt. Linel Churchill writes Delano, "Somebody had better stir up the Negroes." Two months later Capt. Levi Morton writes from the Mississippi Delta, "There is such a feeling here on account of politicks that it is almost impossible to do business." The letters in this series cease a month later, with Morton and "a large fleet" ready to sail to the West Indies. The letters are all legible and in good to very good condition, many with integral covers, some with unusual stampless covers.

Nachdruckausgabe der deutschen, in Berlin 1778-80 bei Haude und Spener herausgekommenen Übersetzung der 1778 in London erschienenen Originalausgabe Observations made during a voyage round the world. Travels through the interior parts of North America in the years 1766, 1767, and 1768`

London: Printed for the author and sold by J. Walter, 1778. FIRST EDITION. Complete with all blanks. With 2 folding engraved maps and 4 engraved plates. Contemporary calf, rebacked, morocco spine label; very small tear to folded crease on first map, some browning and soiling of leaves, but overall a good copy from the library of Hugh Montgomerie (1739-1819), 12th Earl of Eglinton, Scottish peer, politician, and well known composer, with his armorial bookplate. First edition. Carver's work, a classic of American travel, is one of the earliest and best accounts of pre-Revolution exploration. He "penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution" (Howes). Part of a small expedition to map uncharted territory west of the Mississippi, he visited many of the Native American groups residing in the area. "His positive, though generalized, portrayal of their manners and customs helped dispel the eighteenth-century image of Indians as savages. In some cases Carver's is the earliest description published of the Sioux and Chippewa groups he encountered" (Mary B. Davis, Huntington Free Library). In addition to his comments on the natural history and the Native Americans of the West, this work contains the first published mention of the word "Oregon." Carver's book helped to stimulate curiosity about routes to the Pacific.Carver (1710-1780) was an explorer, mapmaker, author, and one of the first white men to explore and map areas of Minnesota and Wisconsin, including what later became Carcer Country. He kept a detailed journal account of his expedition to discover a Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean which became the focal point of his writing. After failing to find money to publish his journal, Carver went to London. He left his wife and seven children never to see them again. Although his journal(see above) was received with praise and popularity, he never received any money for his book and died in poverty. Howes, C215; Sabin, 11184.

Het Vogelconcert - naar Frans Snyders, 1778.

?A Concert of Birds?.

Prijs: ?2.250,- (incl. lijst).

New York and New Jersey - Homann Heirs, 1778.

FINE MAP OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY, MADE DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ?Mappa Geographica Provinciae Novae Eboraci ab Anglis New York dictae... cura C. J. Sauthier cui accedit Nova Jersey...?, copper engraved map on two joined sheets. Original hand colouring with later additions, publised in Nuremberg by Homann Heirs in 1778. Size: 73,5 x 58,5 cm.The map is derivative of Claude Joseph Sauthier?s (1736-1802) greatest production, a large manuscript map of the provinces of New York and New Jersey which was first published on three sheets in 1776. That map also included details taken from Bernard Ratzer?s survey of New Jersey. Sauthier continued to improve his manuscript during the first years of the Revolution, and in 1779 it was published again, but on six sheets. The present map is a reduced version of this mapping sequence. The Sauthier map contains a vast amount of information lacking in earlier works, particularly in upstate New York, the Catskills, and Vermont. It is a great record of New York and New Jersey from the Revolutionary War period.Alsatian by birth, Claude Joseph Sauthier accompanied Governor William Tryon to North Carolina in 1769. He surveyed several North Carolina towns before accompanying Tryon to New York in 1771. He subsequently conducted many surveys of New York, and during the revolution he served as a military engineer producing a number of fine maps for the British Army. Our map was made by Germany?s premier printer of cartographic works, originally founded by Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724). Homann had established himself in Nuremberg, and by 1715 was appointed Geographer to the Emperor, producing some of the finest maps and atlases of the age. After Homann?s death, the prolific business was taken over by his son, Johann Christoph. From 1730, the firm was entrusted to a committee of family members, the Homann Heirs, who published maps and atlases for the next two generations, maintaining the high standards set by Johann Baptist.Price: ?1.650,- (excl.       Bound in full red morocco, flat spine decorated with jewels, pattern Star and flower, castors and golden lace, as an exhibit in black morocco, triple net gilded frame of the boards, gilded finials corner, gold badge in the center boards representing the papal coat of arms of Pius VI ( "gules money Zephyr blowing on a natural bouquet of lilies lying on a plain Vert, a chief argent three gold stars"). Fine golden hatching affixed roll on turns, double frame golden hatching on contreplats. Very small wormhole leading back, two small gaps without gravity on the cuts, smaller galleries to the second contreplat and last flyleaf, Central wetness on the second cover page, wetting coaching the second contreplat. All edges gilt.Bookplate applied in relief as buffer on the second page of custody and bearing the inscription "The e Visconte The enor".The book is presented as a succession of new criticism against theologians who, according to the author, abandoning spirituality to prefer materialism considered dangerous. willingly mocking, tone of Louis Etienne de La Croix is virulent attack when naming the two professors, one member of the prestigious theological faculty of the Sorbonne. This bellicose position potentially explains the rarity of this book. It is particularly interesting, in that case found that Pius VI had possessed a copy with a binder bearing his weapons. The pontiff is placed symbolically on the side of a theological tradition based on the transcendence of God's word and God the principle of all things, even human thought. Pope died in exile in Valencia following the occupation of Rome by French troops, he saw his rule overshadowed by growing tension with revolutionary France; This binding to the papal arms shines in a new light his pontificate and we part on information in its decision-theological positions.Rare book set in an elegant binding in full red morocco struck with the arms of Pius VI.         Die Hausmutter in allen ihren Geschäfften (5 Bände).

Leipzig, Junius, 1. Ausgabe 1778/81.

[Attributes: First Edition]
