A View of Society in Europe, in its Progress from Rudeness to Refinement:

      - or, Inquiries concerning the History of Law, Government, and Manners, First Edition, xx, 433pp plus errata leaf, quarto, a fine copy in contemporary half russia, spine with raised bands with blind dice rules in compartments, gilt lettered, with the shelf mark "D.c.14. Lauderdale History" in ink on title-page, Edinburgh, Bell and Murray, 1778.FROM LAUDERDALE'S LIBRARY. A FINE COPY OF AN IMPORTANT TEXT OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT Goldsmith 11665; Kress B.159. An important text from Lauderdale's library. The dispersal of Lauderdale's extraordinary library commenced in a series of Sotheby auction sales in the late 1980's. The majority of the books were purchased for two Japanese university libraries in Tokyo. This work by Gilbert Stuart (1742-1786), noted by DNB as his "most important treatise", is one of a group of texts of the eighteenth century that have as their aim the elucidation of the contemporary state of society and its organisation through an analysis of history. Interestingly, these texts also often comment on each other, and taken together, provide the reader with a key to the British enlightenment and an insight into how the structure of western society evolved. The present work is centred on the early and medieval period and is concerned with law, customs, and government and the relationship between them: "it is in the records of history, in the scene of real life, not in the conceits and the abstractions of fancy and philosophy, that human nature is to be studied. But while it is in the historical manner that laws, customs and government are to be inquired into, it is obvious that their dependence and connection are close and intimate. they all tend to the same point, and to the illustration of one another. It is from the consideration of them all, and in their union, that we are to explain the complicated forms of civil society, and the wisdom and accident which mingle in human affairs." The author speaks of his work as a kind of moral archaeology; "my materials were buried in the midst of rubbish, were detached and unequal. I had to dig them up anxiously, and with patience; and, when discovered and collected, it was still more difficult to digest and fashion them." Citing extensive but often obscure authorities, (with examples chosen from as wide a range as from the ancient Romans to the American Indians) Stuart here presents the origins of moral and societal bonds, tracing in them the beginnings of ideas that became effective archetypes of behaviour. Of particular interest is Stuart's pioneering examination of the role of women in society. Examples of chapters that specifically concern women are: An Idea of the German Women; Of Marriage and Modesty; Of the Property of the Women. The Dower, the Morgengabe and the Marriage-portion. The Communication to them of the Powers of Succession and Inheritance. The Advancement of Manners; The Institutions of Chivalry, the Pre-eminence of Women, Politeness, and the Point of Honour; Of Manners and Refinement, the Dissolute Conduct of the Women amidst the Decline and Oppressions of the Fiefs. The General Corruption which invades Society.Stuart's main thesis was that the sensitive and careful treatment of women in any particular society bears a direct relationship to the overall prosperity and wellbeing of that society.

Details of the Column and Entablature at Shelburne House, London]

London 1778 - An elegant engraving the columns and entablature at Shelburne House in Berkeley Square, in London. Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57, Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi, which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book, on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia, is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam, and the greatest single factor, other than his own talent, in the work Adam produced on his return to England. Upon his return, the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London, which although not a commercial success at the time, included one of London's most cherished buildings, the Adlephi Theatre. Together, the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England, including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House, Keddlestone Manor, and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses, the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches, lunettes, festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house, an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square, and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'. The work was published in three volumes over an extended span of time, beginning in 1773, with the final volume being published posthumously in 1822. Cf. Brunet I.47; cf. Lowndes I, p.8; DNB; Wilton-Ely, The Mind and Art of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Copper engraving. Engraved by Alex Finnie. In excellent condition.

Etat des gouvernemens tant généraux que particuliers et des Etats Majors du Royaume déterminés par le Roi Louis XVI suivant l'Ordonnance de sa Majesté du 18 mars 1776

n.p., 1778 - In a law dated 18 March 1776, Louis XVI attempted to rationalize the organization of provincial governments, and the present manuscript is the resulting report on the actual ranks and classes of the various provincial government officials. The principal governors are listed by name, with emoluments, and the ranks and numbers of subordinate officials are also noted. The principality of Monaco, a French protectorate, gives genealogical information in addition to the names and fiscal details. The government of Corsica is described as the last of the second class provinces (ff. 99-101). The manuscript includes a table of contents for the provinces and concludes with six pages of financial summaries. This volume is of particular interest as it documents the French military and civil hierarchy on the eve of French involvement in the American Revolution. Notable figures with connections to the French participation include the Maréchal le Duc de Broglie, governor of Metz, who refused Lafayette's request to join. The Duc de Broglie was also patron of the Baron de Kalb. The Duc de Noailles, governor of the royal house at Saint- Germain-en-Laye, was the grandfather of Lafayette's wife. The comte de Rochambeau, not named here, was appointed in 1776 as governor of Villefranche; his rank is given as Major-Commandant, 2,600 livres. Rare and beautiful and dense with information on French administrative practice under the ancien régime (LOUIS XVI) 8vo. Manuscript book. Pages ruled in green and brown borders. [5], 101, [3] ff. Contemporary dark brown morocco gilt, arms of Louis XVI on upper and lower covers within gilt ruled borders with fleurs-de-lys at corners, spine gilt with fleurs-de-lys, morocco label, a.e.g. Short start in foot of upper joint, else fine.         TRAITE D'AMITIE ET DE COMMERCE, CONLU ENTRE LE ROI ET LES ETATS-UNIS DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE, LE 6 FEVRIER, 1778

Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1778.. 23pp. Quarto. Gathered signatures. Outer leaf separated along lower half of spine. Old ink note on titlepage. Light foxing, slight soiling in margins of outer leaves. Overall, very good. In a half morocco and marbled folder within a red morocco and marbled paper slipcase. The official French printing of the first French-American treaty, the first treaty between the United States and any other country, and a decisive moment in the American Revolution. Having struggled to find allies in their fight against England, the fledgling United States achieved recognition from France when news of Burgoyne's defeat reached Paris. In February 1778 the American commissioners, Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee, and Silas Deane, negotiated both the treaty of amity and commerce, published herein, and a treaty of military alliance. Because France wished to consult with its ally, Spain, the alliance treaty was not immediately published in France, and probably first appeared in print in Philadelphia; the amity and commerce treaty was published immediately, however, first appearing in this Paris edition. France and the United States grant each other most- favored-nation trade status and agree to protect each others' commercial vessels. Both parties also agree to abstain from fishing in each others' waters, with the United States especially agreeing to refrain from fishing on the banks of Newfoundland. Howes records two Paris editions of 1778: this official twenty-three-page printing, and another of eight pages, both of which appear in the NUC, and OCLC records regional printings in Aix and possibly Grenoble. The NUC locates seven copies of this official royal printing. In twenty-five years, this is only the second copy of this Paris printing that we have handled. A rare edition of a treaty of the greatest importance to the United States, marking its first recognition by another power and the beginning of a relationship crucial to the winning of American independence.
