Raynal wrote an history of British Parliament (L'Histoire du parlement d'Angleterre, London, 1748) but he is renowned for his major work about European commerces in New World (L'Histoire philosophique et politique des etablissements et du commerce des Europeens dans les deux Indes, Amsterdam, 1770). This account of his observations of plantation societies in the Americas portrayed the horrors of colonial slavery and predicted the end of European colonialism in the Americas. Raynal was also a gifted polemicist and supporter of the American Revolution. In his 1782 pamphlet, Revolution d'Amerique, written before the war concluded and published simultaneously in France and America, Raynal justified American independence and France's participation in the war. He advised the newborn United States to avoid the pitfalls that had plagued "old" Europe since the 16th century -- greed, empire-building, and religious intolerance. Raynal dreamed a peaceful revolution also in France: but he realized the impossibility of this, and, in terror of the proceedings for which the writings of himself and his friends had prepared the way, he sent to the Constituent Assembly an address, which was read on 1791, deprecating the violence of its reforms. During the Terror, Raynal lived in retirement at Passy and at Montlhery. On the establishment of the Directory in 1795 he became a member of the newly organized Institute of France, one year before his death. The American War of Independence was an international matter from its very beginning. The conflict involved participants from the British Isles, France, Germany, Africa, and the Caribbean -- not to mention the diverse populations of the 13 colonies and the many Native American tribes. This linguistic, cultural, and political diversity was also reflected in contemporary writings about the conflict. The earliest histories of the American Revolution, written between 1783 and 1815, self-consciously crafted narratives that celebrated republican institutions and the pursuit of liberty and freedom. These works aimed to create a unified, "national" history. They did not reflect the forebodings of earlier observers, such as Raynal, who saw the many real and potential conflicts that existed among the colonists, for example, the struggles between "patriots" and "loyalists." By the last decades of the 19th century, George Bancroft's History of the United States had all but erased from the story both the British loyalists and, more importantly, the initial purpose of the North American colonies as political and economic extensions of Great Britain. In France, meanwhile, the history of the American Revolution became linked to that of the French Revolution by way of the marquis de La Fayette, who played important roles in both events. With the rise of diplomatic history and a second wave of European colonization at the end of the 19th century, the earlier Franco-British imperial rivalry assumed greater prominence in the work of many European historians of the American Revolution, just as it did in the work of Francis Parkman and other historians in the United States. -- A folio edition of the work (with illustrations) was printed by Zatta in the same year (1778). Two years later (in 1780) a third octavo volume appeared, entitled "Storia dell'America Settentrionale in continuazione di quella del sig. ab. Raynal fino alla primavera del 1799." PROVENANCE: early inscription inside front covers of both volumes: "Per me Ippolito Calini" (presumably Conte Ippolito Calini, of Mairano). A BEAUTIFUL COPY of one of the early sources of the history of United States of America. Sabin 68109.

The Plays of William Shakspeare [sic]. In Ten Volumes

London: C. Bathurst, W. Strahan, J. F. and C. Rivington [and 30 others, all London]., 1778. With the Corrections and Illustrations of Various Commentators; to which are added Notes by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. The Second Edition, Revised and Augmented. 10 volumes, octavo (219 × 131 mm). Contemporary calf skilfully rebacked to style, two-line gilt border on sides, marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare after the Droeshout version, engraved portrait after that which appeared in the Poems (1640), plate of facsimile signatures, folding plate of Morris dancers (in volume V). Some scattered foxing. A very attractive set of Johnson and Steevens's edition, first published in 1773. "The production was similar to 1773 , the publishing syndicate not quite the same but almost as numerous; preliminary essays, lists and so forth had grown substantially, to 346 pages; an 'Extract of Entries on the Books of the Stationers' Company' was followed by Malone's long 'Attempt to Ascertain the Order in which the Plays attributed to Shakespeare were written'" (Franklin). Jaggard calls for the presence of a version of the Chandos portrait but this is not substantiated by Franklin. This set carries the engraved book label of Lord Henry Fitzroy (dated 1811) in each volume (possibly Henry Fitzroy, earl of Euston, 1790-1863, politician); with marginalia, perhaps in his hand, and blank leaves inserted between the individual plays.

Die Hausmutter in allen ihren Geschäfften (5 Bände).

Leipzig, Junius, 1. Ausgabe 1778/81.. Jahrhunderts gelten".

Nouvelle Description du Cap de Bonne-Esperance

1778. BRINK, Carol Fredrik. Nouvelle Description du Cap de Bonne-Esperance. Two parts in one volume. [8], 130, [2], 100 pp. With 16 folding plates, of which 15 depict African game and 1 of an African tree. 8vo., 205 x 123 mm, bound in contemporary Dutch mottled calf, spine gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Amsterdam: J.H. Schneider, 1778. |~||~||~||~||~||~| |~| First Edition in French. The original Dutch edition was published by the same printer in the same year. A fascinating account of the Cape of Good Hope which features an historical journal of an expedition into the interior of Africa undertaken by 85 men who were "diligent observers, and one of them had the advantage of being conversant with the Hottentot language. This document is therefore not only highly interesting, but of great permanent worth" (Theal). The work is illustrated with 16 fine engraved plates of African game; moreover, it contains insightful notes compiled by J.S.N. Allamand (a Leiden professor), M. Klockner (an Amsterdam physician) and other members of the expedition. The journal is based on the diary kept by Carol Fredrik Brink (or Brinck), who served as a land-surveyor on the expedition. There is much information on the African tribes, fauna and flora, and minerals that the caravan encountered during their tour to Namaqualand, which lasted from 16 July 1761 until 27 August 1762. Corners bumped, headcap worn, but a very good copy in unsophisticated condition. Theal, History of South Africa, 1691-1795 (erroneously calling for 13 plates).

Etat des gouvernemens tant généraux que particuliers et des Etats Majors du Royaume déterminés par le Roi Louis XVI suivant l'Ordonnance de sa Majesté du 18 mars 1776

1778. Manuscript book. Pages ruled in green and brown borders. [5], 101, [3] ff. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary dark brown morocco gilt, arms of Louis XVI on upper and lower covers within gilt ruled borders with fleurs-de-lys at corners, spine gilt with fleurs-de-lys, morocco label, a.e.g. Short start in foot of upper joint, else fine. Bookplates of Mortimer L. Schiff, Henry du Rosnel, and three others. State of the French Government: Louis XVI attempts Reform, 1776-8 In a law dated 18 March 1776, Louis XVI attempted to rationalize the organization of provincial governments, and the present manuscript is the resulting report on the actual ranks and classes of the various provincial government officials. The principal governors are listed by name, with emoluments, and the ranks and numbers of subordinate officials are also noted. The principality of Monaco, a French protectorate, gives genealogical information in addition to the names and fiscal details. The government of Corsica is described as the last of the second class provinces (ff. 99-101). The manuscript includes a table of contents for the provinces and concludes with six pages of financial summaries. This volume is of particular interest as it documents the French military and civil hierarchy on the eve of French involvement in the American Revolution. Notable figures with connections to the French participation include the Maréchal le Duc de Broglie, governor of Metz, who refused Lafayette's request to join. The Duc de Broglie was also patron of the Baron de Kalb. The Duc de Noailles, governor of the royal house at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, was the grandfather of Lafayette's wife. The comte de Rochambeau, not named here, was appointed in 1776 as governor of Villefranche; his rank is given as Major-Commandant, 2,600 livres. Rare and beautiful and dense with information on French administrative practice under the ancien régime.

A woman?s remarkable Revolutionary War-dated caretaker?s journal including the hiring out of slaves to such notables as a wounded Benedict Arnold, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Gouverneur and/or Robert Morris

From a clearly penned journal kept by Miss Faney Clifton, 14 loose pages, 4.25? x 6.5?, some front and verso. On laid paper. [Philadelphia], 1778-1781. Fine condition. On June 19, 1778, the day after the British withdrew from Philadelphia for New York, General George Washington, wrote a letter to General Benedict Arnold beginning, ?You are immediately to proceed to Philadelphia and take the command of the troops there...? On July 8, 1778, from Philadelphia, Gen. Arnold wrote to Gen. Washington, in part, ?My extreme illness has prevented my writing as often as I wished; at present I am entirely free from the disorder in my stomach; my wound is in a promising way and pretty free from pain...? He was still recovering from the severe leg wound suffered at Saratoga nine months earlier. Arnold was not well enough to return to the field, so Gen. Washington put him in command of Philadelphia.Entry for July 13, 1778: ?Hired Jenny to General Arnold at £4-15 pr month hard money.? Arnold was living in one of the largest houses in Philadelphia. Built in 1767, it had been the home of Richard Penn, the Lieutenant-Governor of the colony, and a grandson of Pennsylvania?s founder, William Penn. From ?Arnold lived in the house for about a year beginning in June 1778. He married Philadelphia belle Peggy Shippen the following April, and the two lived here for a few months. It has been established that Shippen was involved in Arnold?s treason, and may have encouraged him to betray his country. Arnold hired Joseph Stansbury to redecorate the dining room of the house. According to Stansbury?s testimony after the Revolutionary War, he was the courier who carried the messages between Arnold in Philadelphia and Major Andre in New York City.?Jenny, identified by first name, was most probably a slave.         Tardes Americanas

1778. GRANADOS Y GALVEZ, Joseph Joaquin. 36 ff, 540 pp. Illustrated with 3 copper engravings, woodcut in text, copper engraved coat of arms on first page of introduction. Small quarto, bound in nineteenth-century Mexican half calf over green pebbled boards, smooth spine gilt, sprinkled edges. Mexico: En la nueva Imprenta Matritense de Felipe de Zuniga y Ontiveros, 1778. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. "This interesting history of ancient Mexico, written in the form of a dialogue between an Indian and a Spaniard, and divided into seventeen 'Nights,' is very little known in Europe, and is very rare in Mexico. The author held several important offices in the latter country, among which was the superintendence of the Missions among the Mexican Indians... On pp. 90-94 will be found a fragment of Aztec poetry, written by a poet of the euphonious name Notzahaulcoyotl, and translated into Spanish by the author. One of the most curious subjects treated in this work is that of the Mexican Calendar with the names of the days in Mexican and in Spanish" (Field). Medina refers to this as "este curioso libro." The seventeen chapters, or "Tardes," relate the history of Mexico from the arrival of the Toltecs in Anahuac (8 chapters), through the coming of the Spaniards and their contributions to the country. Medina especially notes Chapter 15, in which is discussed the particular "genius" of the Mexican people. Palau notes that the work is rare and valuable, and that most copies that become available are defective or damaged. Very minor worming in 16 leaves of the preliminaries, not affecting text; some traces of damp at end, but a very nice copy of a rare book with an interesting provenance. PROVENANCE: Dr. Manuel Ramirez de Arellano, a well-known, and somewhat disreputable "bibliomaniac" who had the misfortune to be shot by the forces of Pancho Villa in Saltillo, with his ex-libris. Medina 7000. Palau 108425.

Le Parfait Boulanger, ou Traité Complet sur la Fabrication & le Commerce du Pain

Paris: 1778. 8vo (195 x 123 mm). liii, [2], 639 pp. Woodcut head- & tail-pieces and royal device on title. Very good; repaired tear in H4, marginal tear or paper flaw in M3. Contemporary tree calf, flat spine gilt paneled, red morocco gilt lettering-piece, blue-speckled edges. Provenance: ?"E. Glasgow / 82,?" 19th-century inscription on front pastedown. *** First Edition of this classic treatise on the essential French foodstuff. The first substantial publication of the influential agronomist Antoine-Augustin Parmentier, it provides an exhaustive overview of the bread-making process, from wheat field to oven. In the introduction Parmentier gives a brief history of la boulangerie, deploring the present low social status of bakers, and states his obligation to the master baker Brocq, "boulanger des Invalides et de l'École militaire," who helped him in his research. Five of the six long chapters are devoted to the essential ingredients and stages of the complex process leading to the final loaf: the wheat, the production of flour, leavens, the dough, and the baking. Parmentier concludes his technical investigation of breadmaking with a survey of the different kinds of breads produced in France (barley, rye, buckwheat, etc.). Included is potato bread, a novelty, and a subject to which Parmentier would return in detail in a work published the following year. Conjuring up the abundance of a French bakery, he enumerates the shapes and consistencies of different breads: "Il y a des pain longs, ronds, troués, fendus, cornus, à bourlets, à couronne; des pains à café, à mie, à soupe & à potage; des pains de Nevers, à la navette, à la Reine & à la Duchesse… " (pp. 542-3). The last chapter surveys the commerce and regulation of the bread trade. Parmentier discusses bread taxes and the laws governing bread weights and proposes a restructuring and self-policing of the bakers' guild, evoking the difficult, sleep-deprived lives of bakers, the team-work required to produce good bread, and the vital role of the boulanger in ancien régime France as purveyor of a practically sacred substance, considered the purest and most perfect form of nutrition. While borrowing from Paul-Jacques Malouin's 1767 description of the baker's art (published as part of the Description des arts et métiers), Parmentier's treatise, more thoroughly researched and motivated by the desire to improve the baker's lot, is far more detailed and analytical , and contains a number of recommendations for the rationalization of the bread-making process. In 1780 Parmentier opened a school of bakery in Paris with the chemist and philanthropist Cadet de Vaux, where he put his theories into practice. Many of his suggestions, notably a greater and more controlled application of yeast, were adopted by bakers throughout France and remained in use for the next century and a half.

William Heath orders John Hancock's brother, Deputy Paymaster Ebenezer Hancock, to pay for his aide de camp, Seth Loring

War date Autograph Document Signed, "W Heath M Genl," 1 page, 7.25" x 9", Boston, April 3, 1778, to Ebenezer Hancock, John Hancock's brother and Deputy Paymaster General for the Continental Army, ordering pay for his aid de camp. Mounted to a mat board, moderate toning and soiling, a few minor tears not affecting text, else good to very good condition. Heath requests, in most part: "Sir Pay Major Jona. Pollard one Hundred Dollars in full of his pay as my aid De Camp for the Months of February & March 1778, for which this shall be your Sufficient Warrant Given at Head Quarters ..." At the bottom left, Heath names the payee, "Seth Loring". Ebenezer Hancock (1741-1819) was John Hancock's brother. Unlike his more famous brother, Ebenezer was not successful in business. Sympathetic to his plight, John used his influence to have his brother appointed to the post of Deputy Paymaster General.

Remarks on Mr. Forster's Account of Captain Cook's last Voyage round the World, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775

London: J. Nourse, 1778. Octavo; some staining, marginal defects to a few leaves at the end made good with a dozen words on the last leaf supplied in facsimile; a large and uncut copy in modern quarter calf. Extremely rare Cook controversy pamphlet. One of the scarcest of all the Cook publications and nowadays only very rarely seen on the market, this is a particularly interesting product of the second voyage. The account of the voyage by George Forster published in 1777 had been a controversial affair: as Beaglehole describes the reaction, 'The Forster temper and the Forster recklessness being so prominently displayed in certain passages, it could hardly escape criticism. This was applied by Wales, 'our accurate and indefatigable astronomer', in an octavo pamphlet of 110 indignant pages...'Wales frankly disbelieved that George had written the book, its prejudices were so much and so transparently those of Reinhold - in which his acumen as a literary critic certainly failed him. But he made some damaging points. Not only did he spring to the defence of the 'poor seamen' but he took a series of specific statements that outraged him and rebutted them with a vigour and heat that are still alive, far removed from the genial fun he had poked in the private pages of his journal... Apart from the controversy, he adds to our knowledge a little that is valuable in the annotation of Cook. George could not let this attack go unnoticed, and produced a quarto "Reply"...' (Beaglehole, Journals, II, pp. cli-clii).This is a particularly large copy with its edges uncut; the ink correction on p.48 has been noted in all copies seen to date - it removes the words "and his son" from an accusation that Dr Forster lied about the existence of calabashes on Easter Island. It may all seem rather anodyne now but it was a terrific quarrel then.
