Miscellanies ? containing: I. The Pupil of Nature. II. The Princess of Babylon. III. Zadig; or the Book of Fate, an Oriental history. Translated from the French with notes, historical and critical by T[obias] Smollett and T[homas] Francklin

Philadelphia: Printed by Robert Bell, 1778. First American edition of this translation. 8vo. Contemporary sheep, later red morocco label. Spine and edges worn, joints cracked but stitching firm, some browning and spotting of text, but interior is sound. With the signatures of Solomon Drown and James Gifford on the endpapers and title. This would be Solomon Drowne, (1753-1834) who was known as a surgeon and physician, who travelled through Europe visiting hospitals and medical schools, had been a surgeon on the privateer "Hope" (his journal from that journey was published), and was recognized for his knowledge of botany as well. In a leather-tipped brown cloth open end case. First American edition of this translation. 8vo. Apparently from Smollett and Francklin's edition of Voltaire's 38 volume "Works" first published in 1761-74 with a second edition appearing in 1778. Francklin's involvement in this work appears to have but in the loaning of his name as his only contributions to the "Works" were "Orestes" and "Electra." (DNB) "The Pupil of Nature" was first published in English in 1771. It had originally been published in 1767 as "L'Ingenue." "The Princess of Babylon" was first published in 1768 and the first edition in English appeared the same year. "Zadig" was first translated into English in 1749. It had originally appeared under the title "Memnon" in 1747 and then as "Zadig" in 1748. Zadig is the first title included in the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list. In the early years of the nation there was a great interest in Voltaire, Condillac and other French writers of "free-thought," members of the "intellectual liberalism." Voltaire works were apparently "favorite deist reading." (Nye). Voltaire and the others of the French Enlightenment were of great influence to the American Enlightenment. Voltaire's works had been published in six editions before 1800. Evans 16162

George Washington, amassing troops to fight the Battle of Rhode Island recommends that the Massachusetts militia join the brigade headed by General John Glover, who ferried Washington Across the Delaware in 1776

[White Plains], [August 2, 1778]. 8" x 12.75". "Important Letter Signed, ""Go: Washington,"" as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, 1 page, 8"" x 12.75"", [n.p., n.d., but White Plains, August 2, 1778]. An important letter, accomplished in the hand of aide Robert Hanson, written to Massachusetts Council President Jeremiah D. Powell. Light to moderate toning, minor glassine remnants at top margin, loss at top right infilled on verso, horizontal fold separation repaired with archival tissue, else very good.Washington makes arrangements to augment the Continental brigade commanded by General John Glover (then en route to Rhode Island) with Massachusetts militia, writing in full: ""Sir As General Glover's brigade has been detached to Rhode Island, and is intended to form a part of the Troops?"which are to operate in that Quarter, I take the liberty to request, that such of the recruits of your State as have not actually marched, may proceed and join him. This will not only place them in a way of rendering immediate service; but will prevent them the trouble of a long and fatiguing march at this season. Your recruits now here will join the Massachusetts [sic] Brigades?"which compose a part of this Army."" Washington was sending Glover's brigade from the main army in White Plains to reinforce General James Sullivan's army near Newport, Rhode Island that culminated in the Battle of Rhode Island (also known as the Battle of Quaker Hill or the Siege of Newport) on August 29, 1778. Glover's brigade joined that of James Mitchell Varnum, both under the leadership of the Marquis de Lafayette in the march to Rhode Island. Powell did indeed send Massachusetts militiamen directly to Rhode Island, though it took more time than expected to organize them. The battle was one of the first attempts at collaboration between French and Continental forces, but resulted in an American loss due to poor communication between the two armies, and a large hurricane that scattered the French fleet?"forcing them to sail to Boston for repairs. Provenance: Given to director Michael Curtiz (1886-1962) in 1945 during a broadcast of Vox Pop, a popular radio show of the period. This particular episode was dedicated to the promotion of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, and featured Curtiz, the stars of his most recent film Mildred Pierce (including Joan Crawford and Jack Carson), and Jack Warner. A copy of the radio show will be made available to the buyer.Published in Fitzpatrick, Writings, 12:261. "

AT A GENERAL ASSEMBLY, BEGUN AND HELD AT THE CAPITOL, IN THE CITY OF WILLIAMSBURG, ON MONDAY THE FIFTH DAY OF OCTOBER, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND SEVENTY EIGHT

Williamsburg: Alexander Purdie, [1778].. 46pp. Folio. Antique-style three quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt, leather label. Minor foxing, text trimmed a bit close. Very good. A rare and important Revolutionary War-era collection of Virginia session laws. One act relating to the Revolutionary War encourages soldiers in the Continental Army to continue in service by providing higher pay and discounts on common luxuries like wine, coffee, chocolate, and sugar. Later in the session, the assembly partially recanted this act, declaring that it "cannot be carried fully into execution without greatly distressing the publick treasury." As a result, the provisions of the act were executed at the discretion of the governor and council. Another act calls on the governor and council to supply the American army and navy with grain and flour, and yet another act lays out guidelines for terms of service and pay for recruitment of more Virginia soldiers for the Continental Army. Other measures include an act preventing the further importation of slaves, an act extending the boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina, an act suspending payment to clergy of the Church of England, and "An act for Establishing the county of Ilinois" on the western side of the Mississippi river. "The General Assembly passed two acts at this session, both of which had an immediate effect throughout the colony. It prohibited the further importation of slaves into Virginia; and (because of a severe grain shortage) it prohibited the distilling of spirits from corn, wheat, rye, and other grains for a period of eight months" - Berg. Rare, with only five copies recorded in Berg. Printing would soon end in Williamsburg, as the government fled westward to escape the British in 1779. BERG 265. EVANS 16154. SWEM 7113.

- New edition after the first French (translated by Demeunier) in 1775. Illustrated two frontispieces Eisen (representing slaves under British rule and the British Army in India) and a folding map of India. Full Sheepskin textured contemporary. Smooth back decorated. As part of Volume I missing. Rubbing the back. Volume II joints open tail. Corners lightly bumped. Frontispiece frayed at low margins. It seems, according to a commentary in the book that Bolt himself had written the article on Bengal in the philosophical and political history of the two Indies. Criticism in this book follows in fact that the book of Raynal, namely a denunciation of the exploitation of peoples, slavery, trade ... Bolt was a Dutch adventurer who worked for the East India Company. He was later deported to England where he wrote his book, which remains an important documentation on India in the eighteenth. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

        Autograph Letter Signed

1778. Signed. BLACKSTONE, William.Autograph Letter Signed.Lincolns Inn Fields: February 22, 1778.Fine autograph letter signed by the great English jurist, judge and politician William Blackstone, attractively framed with an engraved portrait. The letter reads: "I have received the copies of the draught, for which I thank you. Notwithstanding all our diligence, I observe, from looking over Sir S. J. Janssen's lists in Mr. Howard's book, that we have omitted to get in any account of the transports, from the sessions of the division of the lower hamlets which (like Westminster) has a separate commission from the rest of the County of Middlesex. The omission is of no great consequence, any further than as it impeaches the accuracy of the table, and may make a small alteration in the average for the County of Middlesex. If Mr. Hatsel will write a line to the Sheriff of Middlesex, the deficiency may be supplied in the course of two days. In your list, have you the name of Mr. Elwes, Member for Berks, a man of excellent understanding and a very good Justice of Peace? Believe me sincere when I assure you, that the qualities you have shewn in the progress of this business have made me earnestly wish to improve the acquaintance that we have thus happily, though accidentally begun."Blackstone's Commentaries on the laws of England (1765-69) helped clarify the English legal system by introducing to the public the traditions that had influenced its formation. Before the publication of this work, most English saw the law as something distant and mysterious, intended largely to punish; afterward, it became something common people could use to their benefit. This letter clearly demonstrates that Blackstone was a stickler for details and accuracy.Fine condition.

HISTORICAL REMARKS ON THE TAXATION OF FREE STATES, IN A SERIES OF LETTERS TO A FRIEND.

London. 1778. - [2],82,[2]pp. (final two pages are the translations of the Greek notes in the text). Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, leather label. Spine rubbed, minor wear to corners. Bookplate on front pastedown with ink notes. A near fine copy, internally clean and fresh. Meredith responds to William Barron's HISTORY OF THE COLONIZATION OF THE FREE STATES OF ANTIQUITY., published in London in 1777. Barron attempted to justify the taxation of the American colonies by drawing on the precedent of ancient Athens. The fifteen letters in Meredith's effort are dated from April 30, 1778 to Oct. 14, 1778. According to Howes, only thirty copies were issued, which rates a "b" in his system. This information is corroborated by John Almon's biographical note on Meredith in his BIOGRAPHICAL, LITERARY AND POLITICAL ANECDOTES (1797). This is one of two issues noted by Adams, this one with a three-line quotation from Thucydides on the titlepage. Among the rarest of American Revolutionary tracts. HOWES M532, "b." SABIN 47944. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 78-71b.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Klopstock").

Hamburg, 21.1.1778. 2 SS. 4to. Wolten Sie mir indeß einmal schreiben, so werd ich vielleicht wegen meines Nicht-schreibens in mich schlagen, u. mich wo mögl. bessern. Ausg. (ed. Gronemeyer et al.), Bd. VII (1776-1782) oder in den Nachträgen.

        Da Asia. Nova edicao.

Lisboa, na Regia Officina Typografica, 1778-1788.. 24 vols. 12mo. With engr. portraits of Barros, Couto, Henry the Navigator, and Afonso de Albuquerque and 6 maps, one in duplicate. 19th-century Spanish mottled sheep, spines gilt with titles and number of volume on two labels. Top edge red (the others uncut).. The best and most complete edition of what is considered the most comprehensive work on Portuguese colonial history by Joao de Barros (decades I-IV) and Diego de Couto; the first edition to include decades X and XI. Books 2 and 3 of the "Decada Segunda" offer a detailed narrative of Afonso de Albuquerque's expedition to the Arabian Gulf and his conquest of Ormuz in 1507; the island remained under Portuese occupation from 1515 to 1622. As vassals of the Portuguese state, the Kingdom of Ormuz jointly participated in the 1521 invasion of Bahrain that ended Jabrid rule of the Arabian archipelago. - This is "the best edition of this famous work on Portuguese colonial history. The first edition appeared at Lisbon, Madrid and Paris from 1552 to 1645. It consists of 12 "Decadas" (decades), comprising the history of the years 1420-1600. Only Decadas I, II, III and a part of IV are by J. de Barros, the rest is by D. de Couto, who begins his part also with Decada IV, so that there are two Decadas IV" (Laures). De Barros (1496-1570), head agent for the Portuguese overseas trade authority "Casa da India", managed to persuade King Joao III to commission from him a history of the Portuguese in India (including Asia and southeast Africa). The result earned him renown as one of the first great Portuguese historians, and the the title of a "Portuguese Livy". The 'Decades' contain "the early history of the Portuguese in India and Asia and reveal careful study of Eastern historians and geographers, as well as of the records of his own country. They are distinguished by clearness of exposition and orderly arrangement. They are also lively accounts" (Enc. Britannica). - Binding slightly rubbed; numerous underlinings and marginal notes in graphite, red and blue pencil. A very good copy, clean and crisp. - Cordier, BJ, 34 and BS, 2309. Innocencio, III, 322. Laures 642. Streit IV, 667 (with extensive list of contents) & VI, 630. This edition not in Borba de Moraes. For the maps cf. Gole, India, 8.

Travels through the interior parts of North America, in the years 1766, 1767, and 1768

printed for the Author, sold by J. Walter and S. Crowder, London 1778 - (8 1/4 x 5 inches). [20],xvi,543,[1]pp. 2 folding engraved maps, 4 engraved plates. (Early Scottish bookseller's ticket on front pastedown). Contemporary calf, rebacked preserving the original red morocco lettering piece. Provenance: Alexander Mackintosh (inscription on title dated 1831) First edition of this landmark work on the exploration of the American West. Jonathan Carver, who was born in Massachusetts, served in the colonial militia during the French and Indian War rising to the rank of Captain and mastering the techniques of surveying and map making. He left the army in 1763 with the intention of exploring the new territories acquired by the British as a result of the war. In 1766 Robert Rogers appointed Carver to lead a semi-official expedition to find a route via lakes and rivers to the Pacific Ocean and the East Indies. Carver left Fort Michilimackinac at Mackinack Island in the spring of 1766, travelling along the northern coast of Lake Michigan, before cutting across to what is now the Door County peninsula in Wisconsin and continuing along the western edge of the bay until reaching what is now Green Bay, Wisconsin. From here he traveled up the Fox River to the Winnebago Indian village at the north end of Lake Winnebago. He continued up the Fox River until he arrived at the "Grand Portage" (a well used portage between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River). Carver then crossed to the Wisconsin River and traveled down to the Mississippi emerging at the great trade encampment at Prairie du Chien. He then turned north into what is now Minnesota. By the late summer he had reached the Saint Anthony Falls (Minneapolis). He spent some time near the falls but turned south, down the Mississippi to find a more suitable place to spend the winter, setting camp in a tribal village in what is now eastern Iowa. The next spring he continued exploring and mapping the Mississippi River through what is now Minnesota and Wisconsin before eventually returning in 1768 to the British fort at Mackinack. In pursuit of a claim for compensation from the British Government for the work he had put into the expedition, Carver travelled to London and it was here that the present work was published. "Carver's book was an immediate success when first published in 1778, and a second London edition followed the next year; over thirty editions and versions have been published since in several languages. A very important book in the history of the exploration of the American West as Carver was the first English-speaking explorer to venture west of the upper Mississippi River. He anticipated the idea of a continental divide as he was the first to mention a large mountain range to the west (presumably the Rocky Mountains) that blocks the westward passage. Further, the name 'Oregon' appears in print here for the first time, both in the text, and on one of the maps. Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution and stimulated curiosity concerning routes to the Pacific, later satisfied by Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark."

1778. ZAMBONI, Baldassare Camillo. Memorie intorno alle pubbliche fabbriche piu insigni della città di Brescia. viii, 163, [5] pp. Illustrated with an engraved title-page featuring a large vignette of female figures in an outdoor classical setting, signed by Pietro Beceni; 12 folding plates showing different views of the Palazzo delle Ragioni, engraved by Beceni at Brescia after Gaspare Turbini; ten headpieces engraved by F. Zucchi after F. Battaglioli, of Brescian monuments; five engraved tailpieces of putti in various poses; and ten engraved historiated initials, especially designed for this printing. Folio, 404 x 283 mm, bound in original Italian rustic paper boards with marbled paper spine. Uncut, on thick paper. Brescia: Pietro Vescovi, 1778. |~||~||~| First Edition of the most significant work on municipal buildings in Brescia. Compiled by Baldassare Zamboni (1723-1797), Abbe of Calvisano, who divided the text into nine chapters treating the architectural history of city offices, piazze, and palazzi, before and after occupation by the Venetian Signoria, with copious footnotes adding historical details and references. The folding plates illustrate views of the Palazzo delle Ragioni, including the original plan as well as a prospectus by the Neapolitan architect Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-1773) to repair damage from the fire of 1573. A selection of Vanvitelli's writings appears in the Appendix, along with letters and lists by other local architects and artists: Jacopo Sansovino, Galeazzo Alessio, Giulio Todeschini, Agostino Covo, Lelio Buzzi, Lorenzo Binago, Andrea Palladio writing about the duomo in 1575, and Titian corresponding with city officials in 1565 about very specific designs for three paintings. Rich with detail, this is a fascinating study of Brescian aesthetics and a fine example of Lombardian printing in near original condition. Light stain on just a few leaves and one small hole in middle of outer margin throughout, probably where the sheets were tied for delivery to the binder. Cicognara 4128 ("Opera ben fatta, e utilissima"). Schlosser-Magnino, p. 569. Berlin Katalog 2724. Raccolta Palladiana 224.
