        Antique Map-NORTH AMERICA-SOUTH-USA-CANADA-MARTINIQUE-Vaugondy-Delamarche-1778

      - Map: 'Amerique ou Indes Occidentales .' (Map of America or the West Indies). Map of North and South America with inset maps of Martinique and Saint-Domingue / Santa Domingo. Including separate sheet with key. De Vaugondy's map of America, pre-dating information from any of the Cook Voyages. The NW Coast of America is shown wildly distorted to the west, with a number of mythical rivers flowing from the Pacific eastward, including the River of the West. The discoveries of Admiral De Font and Martin D'Aguilar are noted. Much of the Southwestern US is also shown as being traversed by branches of these long rivers, searching for a watercourse to the Mississippi. Large insets of Martinique and Haiti. A few minor in the lower margin, one just crossing neatline. Text panel on the right. Copperplate engraving and etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This map originates from an unrecorded composite Atlas compiled around 1795 (based on youngest dated map) which contained many maps originally published in the famous 'Atlas Universel.', by de Vaugondy, first published in 1757. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In the late 18th c. the plates of these maps were acquired by Delamarche. This map has reference to Le Sr. Robert de Vaugondy and Delamarche in it's cartouches. Date reference in cartouche: 1778.Artists and Engravers: Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (16881766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c.17231786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. Charles Francois Delamarche (1740-1817) founded the important and prolific Paris based Maison Delamarche map publishing firm in the late 18th century. A lawyer by trade Delamarche entered the map business with the acquisition from Jean-Baptiste Fortin of Robert de Vaugondy's map plates and copyrights and later addes many plates from other sources as well. Charles Delamarche eventually passed control of the firm to his son Felix Delamarche (18th C. - 1st half 19th C.) and geographer Charles Dien (1809-1870). It was later passed on to Alexandre Delamarche, who revised and reissued several Delamarche publications in the mid-19th century. The firm continued to publish maps and globes until the middle part of the 19th century. Condition: General age related toning and light staining. L. Croegaert, The African continent, p. 124; Huntress 198C; not in Hogg. First edition of the English translation of an eye-witness account of slavery in Africa. The French writer Jacques Salbigoton Quesné (1778-1859) mentions in the introduction that one day he heard of a man returning to Paris after being enslaved for 34 years in Africa. Reckoning his tale must be very suitable for publication, he invited this man, Pierre Joseph Dumont, to his house. "It was agreed between us, that he should repair to my house every day, to furnish me with data that were to serve as a basis of an history of the thirty-seven years of his absence" (introduction). Dupont gives detailed information on the lives of Christian slaves: where they live, what they wear and eat, what happens when one gets sick or commits suicide, how the Arab masters treat them, etc.Offsetting of the frontispiece to the title-page, some occasional foxing. Otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed.

Rare offprint of 2 letters, originally published in Charles Marie de la Condamine's Relation abregée d'un voyage fait dans l'interieur de l'Amérique méridionale (Maastricht, 1778). The first letter gives an acount of Condamine's journey aimed at measuring the circumference of the earth. The second is a letter by the French Isabel Godin des Odonais (1728-1792) to Condamine. In this letter, she describes her terrible journey from the province Quito (Ecuador) to Cayenne (French Guiana) via the Amazon. At first Isabel would join her husband, Jean, on his expedition to measure the earth, but couldn't because she got pregnant. When Jean wanted to return home, he was refused permission by the Spanish and Portuguese authorities because he was a Frenchmen. Isabel decided to sail with a small crew down the Amazon, a 3000-mile journey. Most of the crew either died or abandoned Isabel, and after being on her own for nine days, she met some Indians who helped her to reach Cayenne. With a few faint stains on some of the last pages, otherwise in good condition.

- 2 vols., 8vo (18 x 11 cm.): viii, iii-xxxviii, 366 pages; xii, 366, [2] pages. Detailed indexes ("tables des matières") at the end of each volume itemize contents and topics covered. Bound in contemporary pink paper boards, uncut, occasional light dampstains and foxing. FIRST EDITION OF RICHARD'S SCARCE HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF NORTH VIETNAM. Jérôme Richard, born in Dijon around 1720, served as canon of Vézelay and was elected to the Institut de France in 1795 as a member of the zoology section. Richard's comprehensive treatment of North Vietnam touches on the mores and customs of its people (including cock fighting, sexual practices, and burial customs), natural history, religion, government, agriculture, commerce (especially with the English and the Dutch), and diseases and medicine. Richard also includes descriptions of important cities and villages. French involvement in Vietnam started in the early 17th century with the mission of the Jesuit missionary Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660). French and European relations continued throughout the 18th century, with deepening trade and missionary activity. Richard's work is based on memoires and documents left behind by one of these dedicated missionaries, the Abbé de Saint-Phalle, priest of the diocese of Autun, France, who according to Richard spent 12 years as a missionary in North Vietnam before his death in 1766 (cf. "Introduction," vol. I, pp. x-xi). A second edition of Richard's work appeared in 1788, and an English translation was published in London in 1808-1814. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

MÉMOIRES DE MAXIMILIEN DE BÉTHUNE DUC DE SULLY...NOUVELLE ÉDITION, REVUE & CORRIGÉE

Londres [but actually Paris], 1778. Eight volumes, with frontispiece portrait in first volume. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spines gilt. Spines very chipped and worn, hinges cracked. Boards crudely repaired at some corners and edges. Bookplate of James Monroe in front of each volume. Some foxing and dampstaining, but generally clean internally. A good, solid set with an impeccable provenance. In two black half morocco boxes. James Monroe's copy of Sully's MÉMOIRES, which is, in fact, a very free adaptation by "M.L.D.L.D.L." (i.e. Pierre Mathurin de L'Ecluse des Loges). Jefferson and Madison both considered this book required reading for American statesmen. It was included in the list of books that Madison prepared for Congress in 1783, and was "usually included in Jefferson's lists of recommended reading" (Sowerby). Jefferson owned a copy of this same edition, one of several 18th-century reprints of a work first published in 1638, recounting the nation-building of a great French statesman. Jefferson's copy, acquired in 1788, was present when his library was acquired by the Library of Congress in 1815. James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson, who was fifteen years Monroe's senior, enjoyed a lifelong friendship from the time Monroe began his law studies with Jefferson in 1780. Both were Francophiles, and in that regard Monroe may well have surpassed his mentor. A United States minister to France from 1794 to 1796, Monroe championed the French in defiance of his mandate to promote neutrality. No doubt he embraced French history and culture with a similar though less dangerous zeal. This set of books was quite likely one of many works that Monroe acquired during his years in France (1794-97 and 1803). In fact, Monroe began acquiring French books as early as 1784, when Jefferson sold him twenty-five duplicate French titles; the list, preserved in the Jefferson Papers, does not, however, include a copy of Sully. According to the catalogue of Monroe's library reconstructed in 1967 by Gordon W. Jones, French books comprised nearly one-third of Monroe's library, which, according to Monroe's own estimate, approached nearly 3,000 volumes. Based on Monroe's own manuscript catalogue (the library sold at auction in 1849) and a small group of books retained by his descendants, Jones was able to identify a total of some 450 titles, many in multiple volumes - enough to suggest that Monroe's estimate was not exaggerated. Only a tiny portion of Monroe's extensive library has been preserved intact, and copies from the library rarely turn up on the market. As of 1967 the Monroe Memorial Library in Fredericksburg housed some twenty-eight titles in fifty volumes. These are known to have belonged to Monroe because they descended through the family; most, according to Jones, do not have Monroe's bookplate. Only two other books belonging to Monroe are located by Jones, both in the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia. Doubtless other works are scattered throughout various other public and private collections, but the general lack of a bookplate makes these nearly impossible to identify. All of which makes this 18th-century edition of a classic French historical text, complete with Monroe's bookplate in all eight volumes, a welcome artifact that exemplifies Monroe's library and evokes Thomas Jefferson's early influence on James Monroe as a book collector, and recalls the future president's experience as a young diplomat in the service of an infant republic. Several books from Monroe's library have appeared recently at auction. His copy of Necker's DE L'ADMINISTRATION DES FINANCES DE LA FRANCE, 1784, complete in three volumes with his bookplate, sold for $18,750 at Christie, Dec. 3, 2007, while a single volume of a seven-volume set of Linnaeus, also with his bookplate, sold for $12,500 at Christie's on June 12, 2008. In the December 2007 sale Jefferson's set of this same edition of Sully sold for $43,000. Gordon W. Jones, THE LIBRARY OF JAMES MONROE (Charlottesville, 1967), p.59, listing this copy of Sully as item 168 in Monroe's manuscript catalogue. SOWERBY, JEFFERSON'S LIBRARY 199. ESTC T143312.

The East Prospect of the Ruins of Furness Abbey in Lancashire.

1778 - Pen and ink drawings. [234 x 415 mm]. A vertical tear at the centre has been expertly repaired, there is small loss to the corners, and the sheet has been backed. It is signed at the bottom left "Thomas Cheesman jun.r delin. 1778". The character sitting with a sketch pad might perhaps be a self-portrait. The other couple are rather small in comparison. Little is known about the early life of Thomas Cheesman (1760-c.1834), but like so many engravers of his generation he was trained in the studio of Francesco Bartolozzi, and has been described as one of his most outstanding pupils. His output was mainly portraiture, after the old masters and on commission from modern artists. In 1816 Ackermann published his Rudiments of Drawing the Human Figure from Cipriani, Guido, Poussin, Rubens, which is described in the Oxford DNB as "uninspired and conventional" and "formulaic". Between 1830 and 1834 Cheesman was employed by the Society of Dilettanti in documenting the sculptures in the British Museum. Furness Abbey is located in the Valley of Nightshade near Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. It dates back to 1123, and became the second richest Cistercian Abbey in England after Fountains. It was disestablished and destroyed in 1537, becoming a tourist attraction (it always helps to have a few resident ghosts). Wordsworth refers to the Abbey in The Prelude and Turner made a series of etchings of the ruins. Cheesman's drawing is accompanied by a lithograph of the Abbey from the North East by W. L. Walton after J. Shaw, printed by C. Hullmandel, dated 1843. There were some significant losses to the structure over the intervening 65 years.
