FORSTER, Georg
London: B. White ...; J. Robson ...; P. Elmsly ...; and G. Robinson, 1777. 1777 1st ed Captain James Cook Second Voyage Forster Antarctica Arctic Australis"Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it." - James CookJames Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for this three major world voyages. His second voyage, which was supported by the British government, was set out to circumnavigate the world by means of going as far south as possible. This voyage, which is significantly less reported on than his third and final voyage, took Cook to locations such as Easter Island, Tahiti, and the Arctic Circle - Cook became the first to cross the Arctic Circle. Perhaps the most important discovery from this voyage was proving that no continent existed between New Zealand and South America - a common theory amongst centuries of European navigators and historians. This first edition, an unsupported and unofficial account, was written by Georg Forster, the son of an historian who published the contents of his father's journals and notes regarding Cook. This work is notable as it was published three weeks before the first official account was released. Sabin notes:"The author's father was a naturalist to the expedition, and his account anticipated the official report, and forms a necessary adjunct to Capt. Cook's voyages."According to Lowndes,"This account of the second voyage of Capt. Cook is chiefly devoted to the description of scientific and philosophical subjects."Item number: #6500 Price: $1500FORSTER, GeorgA voyage round the world in His Britannic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo FORMALEONI (Fiorenzuola d'Arda 1752 - Mantova 1797)

( CATANI Francesco Saverio )
Per Gaetano Cambiagi, 1777. In 8, pp. 140 con 9 tavv. f. t. inc. all'acquaf. da M. Carboni di cui 6 ritr. 2 figure allegoriche e 1 veduta di palazzo Pitti. Molti finalini xil. n. Fresco esemplare in barbe. Timpanaro Morelli in: Diz. Biogr. ital. Jacob MOUNTAIN
[Poetry, Verse] ~ FIRST ANGLICAN BISHOP OF QUEBEC MOUNTAIN, Jacob Poetical reveries London. Printed by J. Dodsley...And Sold by J. Woodyer at Cambridge, 1777. Quarto. 32pp. Uncut, stitched in original publisher's blue paper wrappers. Worn, with some tearing and creasing to wrappers and page edges. Inscribed 'Hor. Hamond Benet Coll. Cambridge' to upper wrapper. An unsophisticated copy, with evidence of contemporary Cambridge ownership, of the sole published collection of poetry by Jacob Mountain (1749- 1825), British clergyman and fellow of Caius, Cambridge, whose friendship of Pitt the Younger secured him various sinecures culminating in his appointment as the first Anglican Bishop of Quebec in 1793. He was later to serve on the Legislative Councils of both Lower and Upper Canada. The contemporary owner of this volume was presumably Horace Hamond (matric. 1775, BA 1779, MA 1782), rather than his father, of the same name, the prebendary of Norwich. Both first and second editions of this collection of nine odes, sonnets, songs and elegies are uncommon; of this second edition ESTC locates copies at only Oxford, within the UK, and nine further libraries in North America. Arnold, Benedict
Watertown. [1]p. plus integral address leaf. Folio. Small loss in margin from wax seal, repaired. Minor soiling. Silked. Very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. An anxious letter written by a smitten Benedict Arnold to Boston society matron Lucy Flucker Knox, enclosing a letter for delivery to young Miss Betsy De Blois. The love-struck hero of Fort Ticonderoga writes: "Dear Madam, I have taken the liberty of incloseing a letter for the heavenly Miss Deblois, which by the favour of your delivering, with the trunk of gowns &c., which Mrs. Colburn promis'd me to send to your house, I hope she will make no objections against receiving them. I make no doubt you will soon have the pleasure of seeing the charming Mrs. Emery, and have it in your power to give me some favourable intelligence. I shall remain under the most anxious suspense until I have the favour of a line from you, who (if I may judge) will from your own experience, conceive the fond anxiety, the glowing hopes, and chilling fears, that, alternately possess [me]." In February 1777, in Mrs. Knox's drawing room, Arnold was introduced to Boston society and - more importantly - to the "beautiful.straight, tall, elegant" Tory belle, Elizabeth (Betsy) De Blois. A widower for a little over a year, Arnold immediately fell headlong in love with the sixteen-year-old Betsy - twenty years his junior - and asked Mrs. Knox to present his case. Delighted with her role as matchmaker, Lucy Knox dutifully delivered Arnold's ardent letters, along with a trunk of gowns and other lavish gifts, designed to … [Click Below for Full Description]

[History, Politics] ~ PRESENTATION COPY YOUNG, William The spirit of athens, being a political and philosophical investigation of the history of that republic London. Printed for J. Robson, 1777. 8vo. x, [1], 296pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Lightly rubbed, some surface loss to lower board, slight splitting to joints. Armorial bookplate to FEP, ownership inscription of 'Tho. Cook' to same, recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to recto of FFEP, internally clean and crisp. Presentation copy, inscribed to head of title-page; 'Ad amicum suum J. Royds D.D. / W. Young', final two characters of 'Young' shaved. A presentation copy of the first edition of politician Sir William Young's (1749-1815) history of Athens, a work which garnered the then 28 year old a measure of fame. A revised second edition appeared in 1786, and a third and final in 1804. Young is remembered primarily for his governorship of the colony of Tobago and for his opposition to slavery - albeit his views being somewhat naive and in opposition to the campaign of abolitionist William Wilberforce, perhaps due to his inheritance of four sugar plantations and 896 African slaves. Lessing, Gotthold Ephraim; Hernn Pastor Goeze (Johann Melchior)
Wolfenbüttel i.e. Hamburg, Braunschweig: Buchhandlung des Fürstl. Waisenhauses, various - many without publisher information. Published 1777-1778. Octavo, brown library cloth gilt stamped on spine, various publications each with its own title page, various paginations, totalling about 500 pp. Good copy, institutional marks including bookplate and due slip on endpapers, small embossed blindstamp on first title page, once or twice to text, otherwise good clean copy. The central publications of the controversy that erupted when Lessing published 'fragments' of the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus that attacked Lutheran orthodoxy and argued for a rational deism, rejecting the theology of revelation. This led to an exchange of polemical pamphlets between Lessing and the principle defender of Lutheranism, Johann Melchior Goeze, a pastor from Hamburg. These culminated in Lessing's 11 'Anti-Goeze' tracts, that contain the seeds of his thoughts regarding religion that became the foundation of 'Nathan the Wise.' The so-called Fragmentes Dispute is considered the most important theological controversy of the 18th century, pitting Lessing's Enlightenment philosophy against Lutheran orthodoxy. Good.

Holtzendorff, (Georg Ernst Von)
1777. (MILITARY MANUAL-EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FRENCH) HOLTZENDORFF, (Georg Ernst von). ELEMENS DE TACTIQUE, DEMONIRES GEOMETRIQUEMENT; OUVRAGE ALLEMAND; ...Two volumes bound in one. Paris: chez Nyon, 1777. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, leather label. (ii), xvi, 334, (1) pages, 10 folding plates; (ii), 165, (3) pages, 7 folding plates. First edition. Scarce French military tactical manual with only six copies in the U.S. -Library of Congress, Columbia University, New York Public Library, Universities of Michigan and Pittsburg, and Society of the Cincinnati. Georg Ernst von Holtzendorff was a Prussian officer who was elevated in 1767 to the hereditary Prussian aristocracy for his services. In 1770 he received the command of the 1st artillery regiment as supreme lieutenant. He was promoted in 1779 by King Frederick II, the Great, as General-Major, Chief and General Engineer of the entire artillery and their magazines. He was also a member of the artillery school (Ecole d'Artillerie). It does include four pages of subscribers, primarily French offices. While we have not identified any contemporary American, British or French military who owned this book, the mid-war date of the book suggests that it would most likely to be in the hands of French officers, for we know that Rochambeau did own Holtzebdorff's other book, Campagne do Roi du Prusse, (1784). One corner of cover bumped with rubbing to hinges and tips of binding, else an excellent copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(MILITARY MANUAL-EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FRENCH) HOLTZENDORFF, (Georg Ernst von). ELEMENS DE TACTIQUE, DEMONIRES GEOMETRIQUEMENT; OUVRAGE ALLEMAND; Two volumes bound in one. Paris: chez Nyon, 1777. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, leather label. (ii), xvi, 334, (1) pages, 10 folding plates; (ii), 165, (3) pages, 7 folding plates. First edition. Scarce French military tactical manual with only six copies in the U.S. - Library of Congress, Columbia University, New York Public Library, Universities of Michigan and Pittsburg, and Society of the Cincinnati. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario)
(ENGRAVED CONCERT TICKET) (PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario). FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. PIOZZI, WILL BE A GRAND CONCERT OF VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. (London): n.d., (circa 1777 to 1780). Etched and engraved ticket in red on heavy stock (3 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches). A rare eighteenth century engraved ticket not located anywhere else. Gabriel Mario Piozzi (1740-1809), Italian singer and composer, was the music and singing teacher of the daughter of Dr. Johnson's close friend, Mrs. Hester Thrale. To the consternation of Dr. Johnson, Fanny Burney, and other society friends, Piozzi, an Italian Catholic, became the second husband of Mrs. Thrale in 1784. The ticket was engraved by C. Barnes, Coventry Street, London, engraver of British and American bookplates. The date of this ticket has two possibilities. First, it could possibly be a ticket for the benefit for Mr. Piozzi held on April 18, 1777, as advertised in the Public Advertiser, #243, March, 1777. Piozzi advertised tickets available from himself at half a guinea each. Secondly, and more intriguingly, it is possible this was the benefit given for him by Mrs. Thrale in 1780. Mrs. Thrale met Piozzi at a party at Dr. Burney's in 1777. On August 8 she wrote in her Thraliana, "Lady Shelley & I shall get him a pretty Benefit, & he will have ten guineas from me besides, for teaching Hester to sing; his journey to Brighton will be a lucky one, he has lost some of his voice by relaxation-the Sea will restore it." Mrs. Thrale and Piozzi were married July 23, 1784.
