TORFAEUS, Thormod.
Köpenhamn, A. H. Godiche, 1777. 4:o. Grav. porträtt,+ XXVI,+ 183,+ (blank),+ (49) s.+ utvikbar tryckt tabell (paginerad 184). Häftad, oskuren och ouppsprättad i samtida gråpappersomslag. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Bibl. danica III, sp. 32. Fiske 606. Warmholtz 2601 not.

GESSNER, Salomon.
Zurich, for the author, 1777. With 2 engr. titles with a small etched vignette, 20 etched plates, and 39 etched vignettes in the text, all by Salomon Gessner. 191 pp.; 194 pp. 4to. Contemp. half calf, with 2 spine labels, spines gilt (repaired, slightly rubbed). Zurich, for the author, 1777-78. Only German quarto edition of the works of Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), only few copies printed. It is considered the finest of all editions, and one of the best illustrated works produced in Switzerland, comparable to the edition of Marguérite de Navarre's "Heptameron François" with the illustrations by Dunker and Freudenberger. Gessner himself was responsible for the illustrations, the ornaments and the printing. In this German version he included the pastoral play "Evander und Alcimna" and the poem "An den Wasserfall" which the French "Oeuvres" of 1777 did not contain; on the other hand, he omitted the "Contes" of Diderot which the French edition offered. There are four new illustrations as well, and three were left out. - A clean, wide-margined copy. - Leemann-van Elck, Salomon Gessner, p. 113 and no. 539; Maler und Dichter der Idylle Salomon Gessner, cat. TENIERS, After David II (1610-1690)
London: John Boydell, 1 July 1777. Engraving, coloured by hand, by J.B. Michel. (Expert repair to upper margin just touching image area). 16 5/8 x 22 7/8 inches. 19 1/8 x 24 inches. A lively scene from the Flemish master of the interior genre picture. Born in Antwerp, David Teniers was the son of David Teniers I. He became a master of the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1632-3 after an apprenticeship to his father, with whom he also collaborated. In 1637 he married Anna, the daughter and heiress of Jan Breughel I. From the outset Teniers the younger was an extremely productive painter, thanks to his good relationship with Antwerp art dealers. During the 1630s he produced small-format religious scenes on commission for Chrysostoom van Immerseel, who supplied the Spanish market. However, it was Teniers's genre pieces that were greatly prized by the Antwerp dealers and made him famous. Teniers quickly became one of Antwerp's pace-setting and most successful painters, which probably accounts for his assumption of functions that carried a degree of social prominence, such as the office of Master of the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament in the St Jacobskerk between 1637 and 1639, and Dean of the Guild of St Luke in 1645. He also received such prestigious commissions as the large group portrait of the Arquebusiers Company (1643). During this same Antwerp period he also executed commissions for Antonine Triest (1576- 1657), Bishop of Bruges, one of the most prominent patrons of the arts in the southern Netherlands. By 1647 Teniers was working for Archduke Leopold William, Governor o … [Click Below for Full Description]

G.B. Piranesi
1777. John Wilton-Ely plate 745The watermark is present on the companion print "Braccio di citta pensile, e navigata al di sotto" but is indistinguishable due to the heavy ink.this plate is from the series "Le Antichita Romane"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fon … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maseres, Francis:
London. 1777-1779.. Three volumes. 483; xxii,404; xlii,[399]-810pp. Half titles. Original plain boards, uniformly rebacked in period-style plain paper. Covers detached from first volume. Else near fine, internally crisp and untrimmed. Maseres was the attorney general of Canada from 1766 to 1769 and a staunch proponent of the rights of Canadians as British subjects, and particularly the religious liberty of the French Canadians, even though he was himself a devout Protestant. He was convinced that the harshness of the Quebec Act was a disaster for the Canadian merchants whom he represented in London, and for England's chances of holding its American empire together. This long argument, published over three years and in the form of a dialogue between a British gentleman and a Catholic Canadian freeholder, covers most of the pressing political concerns of the American colonies. It is interesting both from a Canadian perspective and as part of the larger argument over the more southern colonies. Maseres was one of the firmest Whig friends of the American colonies at the time of the Revolution. This is his longest and most elaborate political work, and the volumes are rarely found together. The present set includes the second state of the first volume titlepage, stating "in two dialogues," with the third volume stating "in three dialogues." LANDE 615. TPL 521. GAGNON I:658. JUDAICA ISRAELI Isaac ben Joseph
1777. First Edition . (JUDAICA) ISRAELI, Isaac ben Joseph. Yesod Olam [The Foundation of the World]. Berlin: Baruch Szyk of Shklov, 1777. Octavo, 20th-century half black cloth. $1600.First edition of this important astronomical text originally written in 1310.“Israeli (first half of the 14th century), was a Spanish astronomer who worked in Toledo. [He] is best known for his book Yesod Olam written in 1310, which was considered the most important contribution to Hebrew literature in this field. It dealt with the geometrical problems of the earth in the Ptolemaic system of the universe as revised by al-Bitsuji, the seasons, etc., and included astronomical tables. The high esteem in which this book was held over several centuries led to an edition in 1777 being published in Berlin” (Encyclopedia of Judaica). The two folding plates issued with this book are here provided in excellent facsimile; the plates are often missing from this book, as orthodox readers used to remove them for fear of being accused of reading forbidden literature. Baruch Szyk writes in his introduction: “I felt a great urge to raise the status of our people by translating books into Hebrew, in every study of science… Finally, I found what I have been looking for; in the archival collection of the Rabbi of Berlin, I found a manuscript of the book Yesod Olam… I am thankful for his permission to publish this book, in order to spread its light for all students who crave its wisdom.” Text lightly embrowned. A very good, clean copy.

No Author Given
No Publisher Given(1777). A Parliamentary Chronicle: or accounts of the proceedings and debates of the House of Commons, upon the opening of the present sessions. This spans from October 30, 1776 to February, 25 1777. No author. These proceedings open with an address by King George to parliament, regarding the American Revolution. It begins, "Nothing could have afforded me so much satisfaction as to have been able to inform you, at the opening of this session, that the troubles, which have so long distracted my colonies in North America, were at an end; and that my unhappy people, recovered from their delusion, had delivered themselves from the oppression of their leaders, and returned to their duty [...]".After this address various members of parliament respond, some with support for the war and others advocating granting America its independence. Some of these speeches go into detail in regard to troops, morale, conduct, propaganda in the US press, especially propaganda by General Gage. Also discussed within are Britainn's defenses against Spain and France, Jamaica, and many other interesting topics. The debates over the war with America are amazing historical references, serving to frame the Revolutionary War through the eyes of the British. This book has been re-bound in blue cloth with the title in gilt in a small strip of leather on the spine. VERY GOOD condition with light soiling, light fading and moderate scuffing, mostly noticeable to the top and bottom of the spine. Light bumping and edgewear. Pages clean and solid but browning. [IRONSIDE, Gilbert]
London, Printed for N. Conant (Successor to Mr. Whiston), , 1777. Comprising the Principles of Military Duty, in a Series of Orders issued by Commanders in the English Army. To which are added, some other Military Regulations, for the Sake of connecting the Former. Octavo (208 × 128 mm). Modern half calf on marbled boards, to style, red morocco label to the spine. Half-title present. P.297 is a folding table, errata leaf on thicker stock tipped-in before it. First and last few leaves marginally browned through paste-action from the previous binding, but overall a very good, clean copy. First Edition. Uncommon, ESTC traces only three copies in America. The attribution is drawn from the Asiatic Annual Register, vol. IV, 1802, pp. 43-44. Ironside, a colonel in the service of the HEIC, here compiles a comprehensive and timely digest covering all aspects of military duties: "I am aware that some of the Remarks may at first appear slight and inconsiderable; but be it remembered by those who comprehend not the 'valor in tenui' that Trifles are usually the first Things forgot in a Period of Inactivity and Repose; that the Elements of every Science, however trivial in Detail, become collectively of Importance; that it is an Assemblage of Units which compose a Million, and of Points that form the most valuable Theorems of Mathematical Demonstration. Time, indeed, can alone ascertain the actual Use or Inefficacy of this Work. It is at least concise, adapted to the plainest Capacity, and may serve as a Memorial of Duty to those who stand in Need of such a Monitory" (preface).

FADEN, William (1750-1836)
[London]: Faden, 1777. Copper-engraved map with full original colour. 22 x 28 7/8 inches. The Parent Plan of Faden's extraordinary sequence of maps of the United States Faden's sequence of maps of the United States represents one of the most important cartographic depictions of the newly independent republic. The present map, made at the beginning of the Revolution, is the first of what would be fourteen total appellations (this and thirteen subsequent issues), and is one of the extremely rare first five appellations of this series which almost never appear on the market. The Faden sequence comprises a critical and fascinating series of historical documents regarding the political development of the United States, especially since each issue captures a distinct stage in America's process of transformative change. Faden was the mapmaker most closely involved in the cartographical representation of the events of the war, as his great battle plans attest, and this map provided a broad view of the contested land. It is one of the few of the large number of his publications that he engraved himself. Much of the geography derives from John Mitchell's great 1755 map, of which Faden was to published the 5th edition in 1778. A number of corrections and improvements have been made, all of Florida is depicted. But the greatest change in the political geography of the Colonies and what makes this map so extraordinarily interesting is the greatly enhanced Province of Quebec, which has spilled down to the Ohio River. This was the result of the Quebec Act of 1774, in which … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Fougt, Henrik]:
Stockholm. 1777.. 32pp. plus folding map, 10 x 16 1/4 inches. Contemporary plain stiff wrappers. Paper soiled, torn along spine. Early ownership signatures on front pastedown. Quite clean and neat inside. Very good. In a half morocco box. A little-known and scarce Swedish guide to the American colonies, issued in the early years of the Revolution. Each of the thirteen colonies is discussed in its own section, with details on counties and towns, early exploration, colonization and history, climate, inhabitants, and more. The formerly Swedish colony of Delaware gets surprisingly little attention. The very interesting (and apparently quite scarce) Revolutionary map is entitled "Seat of War in America 1777" in English and Swedish, but is otherwise all in English. It has a small inset of the entire East Coast, but the main part of the map shows the region from the Chesapeake Bay up to Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It is a well-drawn map, the focus of which is the location of forts and large landholdings. OCLC locates a total of ten copies. Scarce. SABIN 5047. HOWES B398, "aa." OCLC 187040219, 187040219.

Stockholm and Leipzig, Swederus. 1779. 8vo, 95, (3 blank) pp. Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek and Berlin records call for xxxi preliminary pages as well as 95 numbered pages. Utrecht, Union Catalog Hesse, Bayrische Staatsbibliothek Munich records match our collation. First edition of this extremely scarce and important book which contains the announcement of Scheele’s discovery of oxygen, made independently of, and two years prior to, Priestley. Scheele’s monumental discovery was made by 1773; he had begun his experiments on oxygen in 1770. The publication of this book was delayed due to the fact that Tobern Bergman was two years late in delivering his promised preface. The work is fittingly bound with Bergman’s own lectures on the nature and application of chemistry, a rare work that is not included in his collected works Opuscula Physica et Chemica."The independent discovery of oxygen is here described and the composition of air by two gases is illustrated. One of these is necessary for combustion and respiration and it is absorbed by a number of solid substances and can be artificially produced; the second gas (nitrogen) prevents combustion. HUME (David)
London: Printed for T. Cadell...and A. Donaldson, and W. Creech, at Edinburgh, 1777. 2 volumes. 8vo, pp. [iv], 571 [572 blank]; [viii], 527 [528 adverts], contemporary calf, spines gilt in compartments, red and olive morocco labels; upper joints of volume 2 cracked, some large chips to spine of volume 2, which is noticeably darker than the spine of volume 12, tops and base of spines chipped, but a good set, with the armorial bookplate of the Earl of Kinnoul on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. The bookplate of the Earl of Kinnoull marks this copy out as of special interest. David Hume knew the son of the 8th Earl of Kinnoull personally. See, for example, the letter to Adam Ferguson of February 1767 in which Hume mentions recently making a strong recommendation to "the Archbishop of Yorke". At this time, the Archbishop of York was Robert Hay Drummond (1711-1776), second son of the deceased 8th Earl of Kinnoull, and brother of the then present 9th Earl of Kinnoull (see The Letters of David Hume, ed. by J. Y. T. Greig, [Oxford University Press, 1932], Vol. 2, p. 120-121, though Greig uses the less common spelling "Kinnoul", and mistakenly states Robert to be son of the 7th Earl). The Earls of Kinnoull in the eighteenth century were among the most visible and well-connected peers of the realm, no doubt partly due to the 8th Earl of Kinnoull having married the youngest daughter of Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford, one of the most powerful politicians of the first half of the century. Alexander Pope knew the 8th Earl, and took him as his model for the charac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whately, Thomas]
London: T. Payne and Son, 1777. Fourth edition (257 pp.). Tall octavo, contemporary decorative calf with remnants of gilt decoration; marbled epps (remnant of bookplates); hinges starting but holding, corners worn. As illustrations, Whately has chosen various garden features from Wotton, Blenheim, Tinturn Abbey, Painshill, Stowe, and Moore Park among others. These examples are produced in support of a largely analytic description of the elements of a garden (Trees are separated into different types by their different shapes, shades of green, and growths). ‘Gardens' here are more properly pleasure gardens and the design principles bear on landscapes. An early, influential treatment of landscape design by Thomas Jeffereson's favourite gardener. A clean, attractive copy.
