PERGOLESI, Michele Angelo (d. 1801)
Published By the Author, London 1777-1792. Broadsheet folio (550 x 394 mm.). 67 etched plates by and after Pergolesi, numbered 1-66 (two plates numbered 56), containing designs numbered irregularly 1-435, a number of the plates printed in sepia or bistre. Without title or text, as published. Central medallions of plates 20, 30, 40 and 55 signed by Francesco Bartolozzi after G. B. Cipriani; central medallion portrait of the duke of Northumberland on plate 56[b] signed by Ignatius Joseph Van den Berghe after Pierre Violet. (A few minor marginal repairs to the plates in Part 1.) Stab-stitched in the 13 original parts, in original salmon wrappers, upper covers each with the part number written in black crayon in a large contemporary hand (half of lower wrapper to part 1 restored, a few other small repairs to wrappers, sewing renewed), housed in a morocco-backed folding box. First edition of this splendid collection of neo-classical designs for every conceivable type of ornament: "ceilings, doors, wall panels, silverware, urns and vases, marquetry, etc. - interspersed with arabesques and grotesques" (Millard). A veritable encyclopedia of neo-classical ornament, the plates were the work of an otherwise little-known Italian artist, who was hired in Italy ca. 1760-1763 by the brothers James and Robert Adams as an assistant for their architectural projects. Although Pergolesi's only firmly documented work was at Syon House in Middlesex, where he was paid for painting the 62 pilasters in the Long Gallery, as part of Robert Adam's famous remodeling of the house for the First Duke of N … [Click Below for Full Description]

FADEN, William (1750-1836)
[London]: Faden, 1777. Copper-engraved map with full original colour. 22 x 28 7/8 inches. The Parent Plan of Faden's extraordinary sequence of maps of the United States Faden's sequence of maps of the United States represents one of the most important cartographic depictions of the newly independent republic. The present map, made at the beginning of the Revolution, is the first of what would be fourteen total appellations (this and thirteen subsequent issues), and is one of the extremely rare first five appellations of this series which almost never appear on the market. The Faden sequence comprises a critical and fascinating series of historical documents regarding the political development of the United States, especially since each issue captures a distinct stage in America's process of transformative change. Faden was the mapmaker most closely involved in the cartographical representation of the events of the war, as his great battle plans attest, and this map provided a broad view of the contested land. It is one of the few of the large number of his publications that he engraved himself. Much of the geography derives from John Mitchell's great 1755 map, of which Faden was to published the 5th edition in 1778. A number of corrections and improvements have been made, all of Florida is depicted. But the greatest change in the political geography of the Colonies and what makes this map so extraordinarily interesting is the greatly enhanced Province of Quebec, which has spilled down to the Ohio River. This was the result of the Quebec Act of 1774, in which … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Fougt, Henrik]:
Stockholm. 1777.. 32pp. plus folding map, 10 x 16 1/4 inches. Contemporary plain stiff wrappers. Paper soiled, torn along spine. Early ownership signatures on front pastedown. Quite clean and neat inside. Very good. In a half morocco box. A little-known and scarce Swedish guide to the American colonies, issued in the early years of the Revolution. Each of the thirteen colonies is discussed in its own section, with details on counties and towns, early exploration, colonization and history, climate, inhabitants, and more. The formerly Swedish colony of Delaware gets surprisingly little attention. The very interesting (and apparently quite scarce) Revolutionary map is entitled "Seat of War in America 1777" in English and Swedish, but is otherwise all in English. It has a small inset of the entire East Coast, but the main part of the map shows the region from the Chesapeake Bay up to Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It is a well-drawn map, the focus of which is the location of forts and large landholdings. OCLC locates a total of ten copies. Scarce. SABIN 5047. HOWES B398, "aa." OCLC 187040219, 187040219.

FORSTER, [Johann] Georg [Adam] [1754-1794].
London: Printed for B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson, 1777. 2 Volumes. 4to. pp. xviii, [2], 602; 2 p.l., 607. without the errata leaf at the end of Vol. I. folding engraved map (frontis.). An attractive set in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, corners renewed, spines tooled in gilt (Vol. I title-leaf professionally remargined at lower edge & upper outer corner with small repair, marginal repair to GG2-3 affecting part of headline, occasional spotting). First Edition of this important account of Cook s second voyage, which preceded the publication of the official record by some six weeks. The author and his father, Johann Reinhold, served as naturalists on the expedition. While the elder Forster was originally to have written the account, he was forbidden to do so because of a dispute with the Admiralty concerning his emoluments. It is based on his journal and also draws from Cook s own although no acknowledgement is given. Humboldt said that he was indebted to this work more so than to any other for his early love of nature and tropical beauty. On his second, and historically most important voyage, Cook determined that the Terra Australis Incognita , which supposedly lay between New Zealand and South America did not exist, and accomplished the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. Cook revisited New Zealand, and discovered, or re-explored and charted many of the islands in the Pacific, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahita and the Society Islands, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, and New Caledonia. A vast amount of scientific and ethnog … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stockholm and Leipzig, Swederus. 1779. 8vo, 95, (3 blank) pp. Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek and Berlin records call for xxxi preliminary pages as well as 95 numbered pages. Utrecht, Union Catalog Hesse, Bayrische Staatsbibliothek Munich records match our collation. First edition of this extremely scarce and important book which contains the announcement of Scheele’s discovery of oxygen, made independently of, and two years prior to, Priestley. Scheele’s monumental discovery was made by 1773; he had begun his experiments on oxygen in 1770. The publication of this book was delayed due to the fact that Tobern Bergman was two years late in delivering his promised preface. The work is fittingly bound with Bergman’s own lectures on the nature and application of chemistry, a rare work that is not included in his collected works Opuscula Physica et Chemica."The independent discovery of oxygen is here described and the composition of air by two gases is illustrated. One of these is necessary for combustion and respiration and it is absorbed by a number of solid substances and can be artificially produced; the second gas (nitrogen) prevents combustion. HUME (David)
London: Printed for T. Cadell...and A. Donaldson, and W. Creech, at Edinburgh, 1777. 2 volumes. 8vo, pp. [iv], 571 [572 blank]; [viii], 527 [528 adverts], contemporary calf, spines gilt in compartments, red and olive morocco labels; upper joints of volume 2 cracked, some large chips to spine of volume 2, which is noticeably darker than the spine of volume 12, tops and base of spines chipped, but a good set, with the armorial bookplate of the Earl of Kinnoul on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. The bookplate of the Earl of Kinnoull marks this copy out as of special interest. David Hume knew the son of the 8th Earl of Kinnoull personally. See, for example, the letter to Adam Ferguson of February 1767 in which Hume mentions recently making a strong recommendation to "the Archbishop of Yorke". At this time, the Archbishop of York was Robert Hay Drummond (1711-1776), second son of the deceased 8th Earl of Kinnoull, and brother of the then present 9th Earl of Kinnoull (see The Letters of David Hume, ed. by J. Y. T. Greig, [Oxford University Press, 1932], Vol. 2, p. 120-121, though Greig uses the less common spelling "Kinnoul", and mistakenly states Robert to be son of the 7th Earl). The Earls of Kinnoull in the eighteenth century were among the most visible and well-connected peers of the realm, no doubt partly due to the 8th Earl of Kinnoull having married the youngest daughter of Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford, one of the most powerful politicians of the first half of the century. Alexander Pope knew the 8th Earl, and took him as his model for the charac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whately, Thomas]
London: T. Payne and Son, 1777. Fourth edition (257 pp.). Tall octavo, contemporary decorative calf with remnants of gilt decoration; marbled epps (remnant of bookplates); hinges starting but holding, corners worn. As illustrations, Whately has chosen various garden features from Wotton, Blenheim, Tinturn Abbey, Painshill, Stowe, and Moore Park among others. These examples are produced in support of a largely analytic description of the elements of a garden (Trees are separated into different types by their different shapes, shades of green, and growths). ‘Gardens' here are more properly pleasure gardens and the design principles bear on landscapes. An early, influential treatment of landscape design by Thomas Jeffereson's favourite gardener. A clean, attractive copy.

Rome 1777 - John Wilton-Ely plate 874No watermark is presentThis plate is from the series "Diverse Maniere d'adornare I cammini ed ogni altra parte degli edifizi desunte dall' architettura Egizia?" (John Wilton-Ely)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peoplin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gregoire, Gaspard
Esprit David, Aix-en-Provence, 1777. A Fine Festival Book. [GREGOIRE, Gaspard, pere.] Explication des ceremonies de la FÍte-Dieu díAix en Provence. . . . 12mo. [2], 220pp. Fronts. portrait of Rene díAnjou (1408-80) & 13 plates ( 1 folding with music), mostly engraved by Gaspard GREGOIRE fils (1751-1846), after drawings by his brother Paul GREGOIRE. 190 x 109 mm. Wrappers c. 1800, uncut, spine chipped. Very faint dampstain in gutter of first two leaves, a little browning & soiling. Very good copy. Aix: David, 1777. First Edition. A very full account of the Corpus Christi pageant in Aix, with twelve plates showing theater and dance, and one with notation for five accompanying pieces of music. Barbier II 378 attributes the work to the Aix silk manufacturer, Gaspard Grergoire, and his sons Gaspard and Paul. Gaspard fils manufactured a famous velvet, "velours Gregoire," which could be painted; his brother Paul became the first to paint on velvet. Their works were exhibited in Paris, at the Louvre, in the early 1800ís; the Gregoire fabrics are preserved in several French museums today. (Paul, by the way, was a deaf-mute from birth.) The Gregoires, as Aix manufacturers, would probably have had a prominent role in the pageant, which was, even in the 18th century, one of the great city affairs of the year. Doubtless they supplied cloth for the costumes, and were in a position to provide specialist descriptions of the masks and dress of the participants. The Corpus Christi pageant reached its height in the 15th century, when it became in effect the principal feast of the Church, a ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin, 19. III. 1777.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. [Click Below for Full Description]
