Second edition, the same year as the first, the dedication dated just nine days after the first (1 October, rather than 22 September). A very timely publication, as Simes stresses in his secondary dedication "To the Officers of the Army": "From the rebellious conduct of the Americans it appears to me that there is a great necessity of publishing something of this kind, for the instruction of the young and unexperienced [sic] officer". In his study of the 18th-century training texts of the British Army, Fit for Service, Houlding is dismissive of Simes's merits as an a … [Click Below for Full Description]

QUARLES, Francis
Printed and sold by H. Trapp, London 1777 - [xii] 9-289 [24 pp. advertisements] i plus plates not counted in the pagination 12mo. rebound in full brown morocco, gilt-lettered spine, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Profusely illustrated with wonderful wood cuts, title page plus ca. 94 additional full page plates. Francis Quarles (1592Ð1644) was an English poet descended from an old Essex family, and educated first at Cambridge and then at Oxford. Upon completing those studies he went to Lincoln Inn to study and practice law.Though not an ardent royalist, he wrote pamphlets during the Commonwealth upholding the divine right of kings. Enchiridion (1640) is his collection of prose aphorisms. In the 1630's he went back to Essex and began work on what was to become his best-known and most popular workÑhis best-selling Emblems (1635), lavishly-illustrated and containing five books of meditative verse. The poems are introduced by a scriptural motto, then a commentary based on quotations from various sources, and at the end closure is achieved with a short didactic epigram. The visual impact is supplied by the centre-piece, the emblem itself. Quarles says that "an emblem is but a short parable," and the verse puts the visual into the mental. The words and pictures, complementing each other, may then be said to have a double impact upon the reader. Very slight rubbing of spine extremities, bookplate on front paste-down, pictorial clipping pasted to verso of first preliminary, frontispiece repaired on recto not affecting plate, F4 (pp. 67-68) torn at lower right with some loss of te … [Click Below for Full Description]

Faden, William, and Bernard Ratzer:
London: Wm. Faden, Dec. 1, 1777.. Copper-engraved map. Sheet size: 32 x 24 inches. In good condition. The first state of one of the finest and most celebrated maps of New Jersey, made during the Revolutionary War. This elegant composition depicts New Jersey in finely engraved detail at a large scale of seven miles to an inch. The map was the grandest representation of the state made up to that time, taking in the entire breadth of the state, as well as the Hudson Valley, most of Long Island, eastern Pennsylvania, and all of Delaware Bay. It captures the state's rich topography, including the Jersey Highlands and the Palisades in the north and the broad Pine Barrens and coastal marshes in the south. The county divisions, major roads and towns are all carefully depicted, indicating that New Jersey was, by the standards of the time, heavily populated, having over 120,000 inhabitants. Faden based his rendering of the state largely on the manuscript works of Bernard Ratzer, a British military surveyor most famous for his map of New York City. Ratzer's rendezvous with New Jersey cartography stemmed from the resolution of the bitter boundary dispute between that state and New York that had raged for over a century. In 1764, George III charged Samuel Holland and William De Brahm with settling the boundary, and their demarcation was finally surveyed by Ratzer in 1769. Ratzer's line is noted on the map as "The boundary settled by commissioners in 1769." Two of Ratzer's New Jersey manuscripts, one dealing with the boundary question, and another featuring Monmouth and O … [Click Below for Full Description]

G.B. Piranesi
1777. John Wilton-Ely plate 342The watermark is on the companion print entitled \"Veduta degli avanzi appartenenti alla Casa Aurea di Nerone\" and is a fleur-de-lis but one is unable to determine precisely which version of the watermark it is.From the series \"Le Antichita Romane\"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bel exemplaire.

G.B. Piranesi
1777. John Wilton-Ely plate 344There is no watermark present. This plate is from the series \"Le Antichita Romane\"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind) … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barby, Switzerland. 1777. - Two volumes bound in one. [16],444,[4],[4],447- 1068,[46]pp. plus three folding maps, four folding plates, and a folding chart. Thick octavo. Modern calf, gilt spine. Hinges cracked, front board separating. Internally pristine. Very good plus. Oldendorp was a minister in the Moravian Church in Europe who was sent to the Danish West Indies to collect data for a history of the mission there. Over a period of seventeen months on St. Croix, he compiled a vast amount of information about local customs through his extensive interviewing of resident Blacks from thirty different tribes. In addition, Oldendorp made notes relating to the natural resources of the island. The second part of the book contains the history of the mission. "With the help of an editor, Johann Jacob Bossart, who arranged the copious materials in a meaningful way, Oldendorp's German- language report became a cornerstone of eighteenth- century West Indian scholarship. Two hundred years later, two American scholars translated Oldendorp's work into English as A CARIBBEAN MISSION. Interest in the book has never waned" - Robert Graff. The lovely engraved views are among the first made of these islands, showing the missions on St. Thomas and St. John, and two views on St. Croix.
