Chatterton claimed that he had discovered the works at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol, close to where he grew up. 'Poems Supposed To Have Been Written At Bristol' was published posthumously, after editing by Chaucerian scholar Thomas Trywhitt who believed the works to be genuine. DURANDE, Jean-François]
1777. Dans sa brochure jaune d'époque. Un volume in-8 (198x155 mm) de (98) pages . . [Click Below for Full Description]

COOK: SECOND VOYAGE] COOK, James
Engravings printed by Boydell for the publishers Strahan and Cadell, London, 1777. Large folio atlas, with the full complement of 64 charts and plates published to accompany the voyage account and two extras (see below), some folding, the smaller plates mounted to size; in a very good modern quarter calf binding. A remarkable reader ("J.T.") of the official account of Cook's second voyage in the year of publication has put this atlas volume together, an unusual and interesting assembly of the engraved plates prepared to illustrate the two text volumes of the official account of Cook's second voyage, here bound as a folio with the smaller plates extended to size by mounting on plain paper where necessary. The owner notes in ink at the start of the volume that "The Prints in this Volume are all picked impressions which were put by on purpose for me by Boydell who had the printing of them". He has added a page reference above each plate, and has extra-illustrated the volume with "the Chart belonging to Forster's account of the Voyage, and Bartolozzi's print of Omiah". The two charts present have both been annotated by "J.T." to graphically illustrate the state of discoveries in the southern hemisphere, with navigators' tracks in different colours, with detailed explanations, similar on both charts: on the Cook chart "In this Chart the Coasts which are stained Yellow denote such Countries as have been long well known. Those which are stained Purple denote such Countries as have been partially discovered by former Navigators but have not been lately visited. Those which are stai … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUME, David.
London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1777. Duodecimo (159 x 96 mm). 20th-century green green morocco, brown morocco label. Bound with half-title, without initial advertisement leaf. Spine and joints a little scuffed, half-title toned with adhesive discolouration in gutter, light offsetting from frontispiece to title page. A very good copy. With portrait frontispiece. First edition in book-form, Todd's first issue (with "myself", line 3, p. 29). Hume's autobiography was published posthumously, initially in the Scots Magazine in January 1777 and then in the present book-form in February 1777. Hume wrote his autobiography as he was approaching death, aware that there would be great public interest in his reflections facing the end, given his record of scepticism towards religion. As of such, The Life is as much a manifesto for his philosophy as a piece of autobiography. An account of Hume's final days, written by his friend Adam Smith and sent to the publisher William Strahan in November 1776, is printed at the rear; Smith also contributed the preface. Lessing, Gotthold Ephraim; Hernn Pastor Goeze (Johann Melchior)
Wolfenbüttel i.e. Hamburg, Braunschweig: Buchhandlung des Fürstl. Waisenhauses, various - many without publisher information. Published 1777-1778. Octavo, brown library cloth gilt stamped on spine, various publications each with its own title page, various paginations, totalling about 500 pp. Good copy, institutional marks including bookplate and due slip on endpapers, small embossed blindstamp on first title page, once or twice to text, otherwise good clean copy. The central publications of the controversy that erupted when Lessing published 'fragments' of the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus that attacked Lutheran orthodoxy and argued for a rational deism, rejecting the theology of revelation. This led to an exchange of polemical pamphlets between Lessing and the principle defender of Lutheranism, Johann Melchior Goeze, a pastor from Hamburg. These culminated in Lessing's 11 'Anti-Goeze' tracts, that contain the seeds of his thoughts regarding religion that became the foundation of 'Nathan the Wise.' The so-called Fragmentes Dispute is considered the most important theological controversy of the 18th century, pitting Lessing's Enlightenment philosophy against Lutheran orthodoxy. Good.

HUME, David.
London: printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand: and A. Donaldson, and W. Creech, at Edinburgh, 1777. 2 volumes, octavo (213 x 127 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, twin red and brown morocco labels, spines richly gilt, single gilt rule to covers, A few pencilled and one ink annotation in an early hand; old chipped paper shelf label at head of spine of vol. I. Wear to spine ends, light splitting to joints of vol. II, sporadic light foxing but generally clean. A very good copy. French armorial bookplate of the Chateau de Dampierre to front pastedowns. The definitive - and first posthumous - edition of Hume's collection of essays, first published in 1753 without his authorization, but thereafter continually revised by him for various editions over the next two decades; this edition, published the year following his death, contains his final revisions and additions, and includes his essay "Of the Origin of Government" which is here printed for the first time. It was Hume's essays, rather than his longer treatises, that brought him popular acclaim and commercial success, and indeed, they were his preferred philosophical writings; prefixed to vol. II is his advertisement disavowing his Treatise on Human Nature, and asserting that "the following pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical sentiments and principles". Joseph II was eager for knowledge on every aspect of the French Empire and he did not merely visit famous attractions, but especially hospitals, poorhouses, schools, fortifications, factories, shipyards and so on. He met many members of the royal family and the high nobility, as well as bankers, writers, scientists and artists. WILLIAMS, John.
London: T. Becket, 1777. 2 volumes, quarto (265 x 203 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spines elaborately decorated gilt, red morocco labels, yellow edges. Engraved armorial bookplates of John Wilkinson to front pastedowns, stencilled 19th-century ownership stamp of James Bannantyne to free endpapers, joints starting to crack but still very firm, corners and extremities worn, some surface scrapes and wear to boards, occasional spotting and the odd stain; generally still a very good copy. First edition of a lengthy survey of the northern countries of Europe. The author acknowledges the assistance he received from various heads of state and dignitaries, not only through conversation, but from access to their libraries and public records. "Williams, deriding Voltaire for describing a country he had never visited, seems to have been in Russia in 1770. He refers to his interviews in St Petersburg and Moscow, consulting manuscripts (in German) in the Kremlin, and travelling '1700 versts in the Russian dominions to form some idea of the character of the mass of the people in this state'. He provides an overview of the geography and history of Russia, dwelling in particular on the reign of Peter I and the overthrow of Peter III. There is little evidence of his own observations, even when writing on 'manners and customs'" (Cross). Cross, In the land of the Romanovs, D22. Not in Goldsmiths' or Kress. FORSTER, Georg
London: B. White, 1777. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it." - James Cook James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for this three major world voyages. His second voyage, which was supported by the British government, was set out to circumnavigate the world by means of going as far south as possible. This voyage, which is significantly less reported on than his third and final voyage, took Cook to locations such as Easter Island, Tahiti, and the Arctic Circle - Cook became the first to cross the Arctic Circle. Perhaps the most important discovery from this voyage was proving that no continent existed between New Zealand and South America - a common theory amongst centuries of European navigators and historians. This first edition, an unsupported and unofficial account, was written by Georg Forster, the son of an historian who published the contents of his father's journals and notes regarding Cook. This work is notable as it was published three weeks before the first official account was released. Sabin notes: "The author's father was a naturalist to the expedition, and his account anticipated the official report, and forms a necessary adjunct to Capt. Cook's voyages." According to Lowndes, "This account of the second voyage of Capt. Cook is chiefly devoted to the description of scientific and philosophical subjects.". [Attributes: First Edition]
