[Click Below for Full Description]

FORSTER, George.
Berlin: Haude und Spener, 17751778-80, 1777. Berlin: Haude und Spener,, 17751778-80. 2 volumes, quarto (260 x 210 mm). Contemporary half sheep renewed, spine of vol. I laid down, daubed paste paper boards, red and green labels, floral tools to the compartments, tooling deeply impressed in blind, edges stained red. With 1 folded map and 11 copper engravings. Late-nineteenth-century Russian library stamps verso of title pages. Previous repairs to spine ends of volume I, original panels laid down. Professional repair to folding map and front free endpaper of vol. II, map stub reinforced. Board edges a little rubbed, light fading to colour of book block edges, some spotting and browning as usual, a very good set. First edition in German, following the first English edition of 1777, which famously pre-empted the official account. The present edition is augmented with additions from Cook's own account. A distinguished naturalist, Forster was employed as Chief Naturalist for the Resolution on Cook's second voyage, accompanied by his son Georg (1754-1794) as an assistant; "the elder Forster proved to be a highly capable scientist and a keen observer—his works proved him a veritable genius in many disciplines—but he had a disagreeable personality and alienated the expedition's staff" (Rosove). His son published an unofficial alternate account of Cook's voyage six weeks before Cook's own and made frequent, unacknowledged use of his journals, in addition to Johann's notes and his own recollections, provoking a pamphlet war with William Wales, the astronomer on the expedition, and Lor … [Click Below for Full Description]

COOK, James
for W. Strahan; And T. Cadell in the Strand. 1777 1st ed Captain James Cook Second Voyage MAPS Antarctica Arctic Australis “Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it.” – James Cook James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. His second voyage, which was supported by the British government, was set out to circumnavigate the world by means of going as far south as possible. This voyage, which is significantly less reported on than his third and final voyage, took Cook to locations such as Easter Island, Tahiti, and the Arctic Circle – Cook became the first to cross the Arctic Circle. Perhaps the most important discovery from this voyage was proving that no continent existed between New Zealand and South America – a common theory amongst centuries of European navigators and historians. This second volume, from the original first edition, includes an extensive vocabulary of the language of the Society Isles, 27 engravings – many double-paged – and folding maps! According to Lowndes, “This account of the second voyage of Capt. Cook is chiefly devoted to the description of scientific and philosophical subjects.” Per ‘Printing and the Mind of Man’, “Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robertson, William
Printed for W. Strahan, T. Cadell, J. Balfour, London, 1777. First edition of this important history of America, with four large engraved folding maps by Thomas Kitchin. Quarto, bound in full contemporary diced calf, gilt titles to the spine. In near fine condition, with the maps in fine condition. An exceptional example. William Robertson's history of the discovery of America and the conquest of Mexico and Peru was the "most highly regarded secondary source of its time" (Howes, 493). From its publication until the 1840s it "held its place as the standard history of the discovery of the New World" (Honour). "Its vivid descriptions and philosophical disquisitions on aboriginal society captivated the literary world, while the outbreak of the American war lent the book pertinent public interest and rendered it more popular than either of its predecessors. Keats, who read it with enthusiasm many years after, owed to it the suggestion of his famous simile of 'Cortez and his men" (DNB). Kitchin's maps "show a fine technical facility, the lettering and decoration from his workshop among the most impressive of all English rococo work" (DNB). Sabin 71973. Howes R358. ont J. Rivington and Sons : London. 1777. Hardcover. Book, The ninth edition of this uncommon cookery book for housekeepers in the eighteenth century, writing by Sarah Harrison. Last seen at auction in 2008. The ninth edition of this work. An uncommon work. Last seen at auction in 2008. ESTC citation number N17342. Bound without the front endpaper. This work is a duodecimo. The signatures run as [a1], A1, B-K12, A-B6. 'The House-keeper's Pocket-Book, and Compleat Family Cook' is a standard cookery work first published in 1733. It was a popular work when it was originally published, at a time when cookery books was a burgeoning genre and market. This work shows the common sensibility of trying to recommend ingredients that were of moderate price, and easy for a housekeeper or cook to get their hands on. Thus the author presents recipes which show elegance in eating, whilst in no way hindering frugality or good conduct. This helped the work's popularity among the public, as it didn't work to exclude those who couldn't afford certain ingredients. The author also offers information on what foods are in season throughout the year, and also presents monetary tables for people who were not mathematically inclined. Written by Sarah Harrison, who was active between the years 1733 and 1777. Very little is known about her life. Newspaper clipping tipped onto the front pastedown, from the Bromley and Kentish Times on 3rd July 1970, as stated by an ink inscription under the clipping. The newspaper clipping is titled 'Cook book of 1778', and the article discusses a 1778 copy of 'The Expe … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLIAMS, John.
First edition of a lengthy survey of the northern countries of Europe. The author acknowledges the assistance he received from various heads of state and dignitaries, not only through conversation, but from access to their libraries and public records. "Williams, deriding Voltiare for describing a country he had never visited, seems to have been in Russia in 1770. He refers to his interviews in St Petersburg and Moscow, consulting manuscripts (in German) in the Kremlin, and travelling '1700 versts in the Russian dominions to form some idea of the character of the mass of the people in this state'. He provides an overview of the geography and history of Russia, dwelling in particular on the reign of Peter I and the overthrow of Peter III. There is little evidence of his own observations, even when writing on 'manners and customs'" (Cross).

Impresso su carta vergata coeva (mm. 284 x 411), coloritura coeva, in basso a sinistra, annotazione manoscritta a matita "W.R.T. Venice: May 20, 1895", in ottimo stato di conservazione. [Click Below for Full Description]

EDWARD GIBBON
88. 1777, First edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, A very smart early edition set of Edward Gibbon's historical masterpiece. With volumes II-VI being the first edition, this lovely leather-bound library set retains bright pages and maps. Volume I is a third edition from 1777, with volumes II-VI being first editions from 1781-1788. It is not unusual to have a set whereby the first volume is not a first edition due to the scarcity of this publication. This third edition of volume I was one of 1000 copies printed. Volumes II and III were published at the same time, which is why some copies have the errata leaf of the third volume bound in volume II. To this set volume III's errata is to its own volume. This copy of volume III was issued without the publisher's adverts, as several were. (Norton) Frontispiece to volume II and an incorrectly bound 'Map of the Western Empire'. The 'Environs of Constantinople' map is bound at page 22 of volume II. A second 'Map of the Western Empire' is bound to volume III, as called for. The map of Constantinople was frequently cropped and bound in sideways. To this copy the map has retained its wide margins and is bound and folded the correct way, which is very scarce. (Norton) With the half-title to volumes III. There is an extra table of contents for volume I bound in to the start of volume II. A duplicate map of Western Empire is misbound to volume 2. A facsimile of the correct map 'Eastern Empire' is loosely inserted. G1/P. 41 to volume II is a cancel, with the original leaf provided in facsimile. The library was founded in the 16th century. It is no wonder that an auction of the duplicates and triplicates was held. Amongst the donations made to the library in the previous decade were the private collections of Count Heinrich II von Bünau (42,139 volumes given in 1764) and of Count Heinrich von Brühl (62,000 volumes given in 1768).This catalogue contains 9815 lots. There were two earlier sales in the series, in 1775 and 1776, and a fourth in 1802. In my Catalogue 37 (1987), the first in my "catalogus catalogorum" series, I described a "married" set of the first three volumes (now Getty; it took me some years to make this marriage). Francesco & Paolo SANTINI (Attivi a Venezia seconda metà del XVIII secolo)
Fine example of the first state Santini's 6-sheet map of the Northern Part of the Ottoman Empire, centered on the Black Sea, published in Venice in 1779. The map was late reprinted by Giovanni Antonio Remondini. Santini's map is based upon Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni's map of 1774. Rizzi-Zannoni's 3 sheet map of the Northern Ottoman Empire shows the Empire at the tail end of its centuries of control of Southeastern Europe. The map extends north and east to the Caspian Sea and Cossack Regions, and west to Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria, providing a fantastic geographical and topographical depiction of the region. Includes a fine decorative cartouche. The 6 sheet map was bound into the Atlas Universel. While there is some overlapping geography on the horizontal sheets, the sheets can be cut and joined to form a 6-sheet map approximately 60 inches wide and 34 inches tall. Copperplate with original outline colour, 6 sheet map, unjoined, with full margins, light waterstain in the lower white margins, otherwise very good condition.

Impresso su carta vergata coeva (mm. 284 x 411), coloritura coeva, in basso a sinistra, annotazione manoscritta a matita "W.R.T. Venice: May 20, 1895", in ottimo stato di conservazione. [Click Below for Full Description]

Guenee, Antoine
Dublin: William Watson, 1777. First edition. Hardcover. 445, 428 pages. 21 x 14 cm. The controversy of Voltaire's anti-Semitism has been long disputed. He was at war with both Judaism and Christianity. He wanted to purge all men, of whatever persuasion, from these superstitions in order to make them enlightened. He ridiculed each of the major religions, but he was meanest to the Jews: ''You have surpassed all nations in impertinent fables, in bad conduct and in barbarism." Jacobins such as Jean Francois Rewbell in the 1790's and the socialist Pierre Proudhon in the next generation are among the many figures, especially of the left, who justified their arguments against the Jews by quoting Voltaire. Scattered toning, mostly in first and last leaves, tight and firm copy. Modern black leatherette, spines printed in gilt. Very good. 2 vols. Item #20951. [Attributes: First Edition]

JORDAN, John.
London Printed for the Author, and sold by S. Hooper... G. Kearsley... S. Leacroft... J. Robson and Co.... and J. Keating, Stratford upon Avon, 1777. 4to (260 × 210 mm) in half-sheets, pp. 48; with a large engraved title vignette ('The West View of Welcombe Hills') and a subscribers' list on pp. [39]-48; title and final page darkened and marked, small hole to title, some neat restoration to the blank verso, final leaf sometime reinforced in the fore-margin, old dampstain in the gutter towards the end; modern quarter calf. Scarce first (and only) edition, dedicated to 'the accomplished Mrs. Lloyd, Relict of the late Worthy John Lloyd, Esq; of Snitterfield, near Stratford'. Aubin describes it as 'very strong in antiquities and has as chief attraction a pathetic tale of early English times' (p. 94). This is the only work by Jordan, self-appointed Shakespeare sage of the late eighteenth century, to be published in his lifetime. A wheelwright by trade, and keen amateur actor, Jordan was a popular tour guide in Stratford. As a man full of Shakespeare lore (he promoted, for example, the story of Shakespeare's mulberry tree), he cannot resist including the Bard here: 'Hence eastward, Warwick tow'rs attract the sight; / And westward, Stratford domes no less delight, / Chiefly that ancient solemn pile, whose stones / Have long enclos'd the much-lov'd Shakespear's bones' (pp. 33-4), with a footnote on the 'not inelegant monument' in the Church, 'with his bust to the waste [sic], and his face painted to imitate flesh-colour, according to the absurd taste of those times.' Aubin, p. 302 … [Click Below for Full Description]
