FORSTER, George
B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson 1777 Folding engraved map, some music notations in text. Modern calf binding with morocco spine labels, new endpapers. Interior, text and map in superb condition . small clean tear on leaf with errata repaired no loss. First edition of a remarkable achievement, ?an important and necessary addition? (Hill) to the account of Cook?s second voyage. The second voyage was ?to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents.? Cook was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle, and on his return to the area near New Zealand an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries were made, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and a number of smaller Islands. This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid in finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy. The author chronicles each location, describing the physical attributes as well as the inhabitants they met along the way. Georg Forster (1754 - 1794), along with his father Johann Reinhold Forster, accompanied Cook on the Resolution as naturalists, with the intention of preparing the official account of the voyage. George was not yet 18 when he boarded the Resolution, and over the next three years was active in making collections and observations to both natural history and ethnology. He mad hundreds of paintings and drawings during the voyage. However, a dispute arose with the Admiralty over payments w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Assai gradevole terrilogio settecentesco in formato cm.45x72,7. [Click Below for Full Description]

(ex-libris imprimé A.B.L. III. 395 - Martin & Mylne 77.41.

Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726 Danzig - Berlin 1801)
1777. Schwarze Kreide auf Papier mit Wasserzeichenfragment "M", verso bezeichnet: "George Friedrich v. Wurmb. [Click Below for Full Description]

This copy was owned by Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, British officer in the Royal Navy during the American Wars of Independence, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The first three chapters focus on the starting point of Carter's Journey: Gibraltar, the strategically important British territory ceded by Spain at the Treaty of Utrecht. The base maintained by the British Navy there generally housed the Mediterranean Fleet, of which Pellew was Commander-in-Chief 1811-14 and 1815-16. Its location proved key to the preparations for several famous Naval campaigns, including that which culminated in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for T. Payne & Son. 1777 [8], 257 [1]pp. 8vo. Full contemp. speckled calf, gilt ruled border & bands, red morocco label; a little rubbed, corners sl. bumped. v.g.ESTC T79315. Thomas Whately, 1726-72, was an English politician serving as secretary to the treasury in George Grenville's administration and as secretary of State under Lord North. Whately however, is best known for his treatise on gardening which was, prior to the writings of Walpole and Repton, the most comprehensive work on the theory and practice of English landscape gardening. Thomas Jefferson, while researching for his own garden designs at Monticello, walked around the gardens of English country homes with a copy of Whately in his hands. Jefferson wrote of Whately: 'While his descriptions in point of style are models of perfect elegance and classical correctness, they are as remarkable for their exactness. I always walked over the gardens with his book in my hand, examined with attention the particular spots he described, found them so justly characterised by him as to be easily recognised, and saw with wonder, that his fine imagination had never been able to seduce him from the truth'.

[Continental Congress]:
Philadelphia & New York. 1777-1779.. Four volumes. Modern speckled calf, spines gilt with leather label. Some light toning and soiling, scattered foxing. Very good. The first four volumes of the Journals of the Continental Congress, containing the most vital documents from the early Revolutionary period. These volumes cover the exciting events of 1776, culminating with the Declaration of Independence on July 4, an early printing of which appears in volume two, as well as all of the other actions of Congress for the year. Shortly after the Declaration of Independence, Congress recognized the necessity of publishing its proceedings on a timely basis. These volumes appeared in more or less annual volumes, but in inconsistent formats and from different printers: Robert Aitken, John Patterson, David Claypoole, and John Dunlap. A tradition had already been established by the separate publication of the Journals of the first and second Continental Congresses in 1774 and 1775. The first volume of this series, begun after the Declaration of Independence, reprinted those pre- Independence journals, and was issued concurrently with the second volume, both appearing from the press of Robert Aitken in 1777. The second volume included a printing of the Declaration, as well as many of the critical documents of 1776. John Patterson issued the third volume in New York in 1778, covering events of the year 1777. David Claypoole was the printer of the fourth, which covered the events of 1778. The present set contins the following volumes: 1) 1774-76. Aitken. 1777. [2],310,[12]pp. EVANS 15683. … [Click Below for Full Description]
