The emperor travelled under the pseudonym Count of Falkenstein and was accompanied by the Austrian general Joseph von Colloredo (1735-1818), the diplomat Ludovico, Count di Belgiojoso (1728-1801), the physician Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla (1728-1800) and Philipp von Cobenzl (1741-1810), the author of the present manuscript. S. Weir Mitchell, M.D. 1908 "A Venture in 1777"
1777. Fair condition. Please see pics for details. This is an autographed book of "A Venture in 1777" by the author, S. Weir Mitchell. It was published in September 1908. It is in fair condition with a stained cover and loose binding. The pages are in good condition with only the expected discoloration. Inserted in the book are some folded loose-leaf pages that include an article written by W. W. Keen, M.D. that references his relationship with Mitchell. The book's inscription appears to have been written by two prominent Philadelphians. First by Corrine Keen Freeman, Dr. W. W. Keen's oldest daughter, as a presentation of the book to her son W. W. Keen Freeman on Easter, 1910. The second is by the author himself, which again acknowledges his fond relationship with Dr. Keen. Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) was an American physician and writer known for his discovery of causalgia and erythromelalgia. William Williams Keen Jr. (1837-1931) was an American doctor who was the first brain surgeon in the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Robson, 1777. 8vo. x, [1], 296pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Lightly rubbed, some surface loss to lower board, slight splitting to joints. A presentation copy of the first edition of politician Sir William Young's (1749-1815) history of Athens, a work which garnered the then 28 year old a measure of fame. A revised second edition appeared in 1786, and a third and final in 1804. Young is remembered primarily for his governorship of the colony of Tobago and for his opposition to slavery - albeit his views being somewhat naive and in opposition to the campaign of abolitionist William Wilberforce, perhaps due to his inheritance of four sugar plantations and 896 African slaves. VIALE Lucia Cattarina
Presso i fratelli Reycends, Torino, 1777. In 8, cm 14,5x 21,5, pp. (4) + XXXVI + 152. brossura editoriale decorata. Esemplare intonso in barbe. DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
1777. Broadside. Limited edition replica by Mindy Belhoff, 100 copies. New York: Intima Press, 2010, printed in black and brown, hand set in Caslon & letterpress. With Essays, 16 x 21 in., printed in blue and red. Both printed on handmade cotton & linen paper custom made by Katie MacGregor, Maine. 16 x 21 in. The Belhoff replica:Research & printing took place January thru September 2009, as originally designed & printed by Mary Katharine Goddard, January 1777. "Setting the Declaration in type was enlightening in many ways, as my thoughts throughout the process were of Mary Katharine in her print shop during the cold month of January, not having 21st century amenities. I could not help but wonder how Mary Katharine must have felt being entrusted to print this stunning proclamation while setting each letter of the text 'all Men are created equal.' Therefore, on July 4th, 2010, I went to press on a second unambiguous edition proclaiming 'all People are created equal'," explained Mindy Belloff. "Mary Katharine was an incredibly brave woman for her time. By her actions, she was clearly a pioneer for women's rights and freedom of the press." (Mindy Belhoff).ConditionFine. Bright and clean.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
London, 1777. This history of British affairs notes increasing bitterness on the part of Americans, prints the Declaration of Independence and proposed Articles of Confederation, and comments on the disruption of trade, military action, etc. It chronicles events, historical sketches of people around the world, scientific gains, essays and state papers. The Declaration is printed with some sanitizing edits to make it slightly less insulting to the King, ie: "The history of the present __ __ __, is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations; all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states." (State Papers, pp 261-264) [DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE].Book. The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politics, and Literature, For the Year 1776... London: Printed for J. Dodsley, in Pall Mall, 1777. 270 pp.In an earlier section, it includes a surprisingly unfiltered American patriots' view of reaction."The declaration of independence...was read at the head of each brigade of the continental army, posted at and near New York, and every where received with loud huzzas, &c.; and the same evening the equestrian statue of his Majesty...was laid prostrate on the ground, and the lead of it destined to serve as bullets. The same declaration was ready pretty much about the same time, in almost every other town of the united colonies, and every where received with equal demonstrations of joy." (Chronicle, 159)Editorial comments support a firm British response: "the conduct of the Americans, recommending a perseverance in the same s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Par M. Leclerc de Sepchênes
Paris: 1777. [Click Below for Full Description]

The second edition. Published the same year as the first edition. A scarce edition. Collated complete. Thomas Chatterton was an English poet who tragically killed himself at just seventeen. His work was extremely advanced in style, to such an extent that he was able to pass off his work as that of an imaginary fifteen century poet named Thomas Rowley. Chatterton claimed that he had discovered the works at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol, close to where he grew up. 'Poems Supposed To Have Been Written At Bristol' was published posthumously, after editing by Chaucerian scholar Thomas Trywhitt who believed the works to be genuine. The works caused much controversy with much scholarly debate surrounding their authenticity. It took almost thirty years and much scholarl … [Click Below for Full Description]

MILLER, John (1715?-1790?)
London: published and sold by the author, 1777. Folio. (21 x 14 1/4 inches). Engraved frontispiece, engraved title, 4 hand-coloured engraved plates of botanical details, 104 engraved plates, each in two states (uncolored and finely hand colored; the hand colored plates being proofs before letters), all by and after Miller. One-page list of subscribers. Contemporary calf, covers panelled in git, expertly rebacked, spine gilt with raised bands, contemporary marbled endpapers and edgesThe first edition: with the plates in both coloured and uncoloured states. The work was issued in 20 parts between 1770 and 1777. According to the list of subscribers, 105 copies were ordered by 85 individuals. The uncolored plates invariably included lettering for scientific purposes, while the handcolored plates are without lettering and many printed using a warm brown ink with the intent of making the images resemble the original watercolours and be more aesthetically pleasing. The plants described and illustrated came in the main from Dr. John Fothergill's famous garden in Upton, Essex. Fothergill was an enthusiastic supporter and indeed superintendent of the work, but refused Miller's attempt to dedicate the work to him. He felt that dedications were "more productive of envy to the patron, than of advantage to the author." John Miller (1715-1780), born Johann Sebastian Müller in Nuremberg, came to England in 1744 and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a botanical artist and engraver of considerable repute and came to the attention of the great naturalist Linnæus thro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good copy in untouched original binding. ---- Duveen 505; Honeyman 2628; Partington 2, 631-636. - RARE SECOND EDITION of Jean Rey's treatise that contains the first published observations on the increase of the weight of metals in calcination and the role air played in it (anticipating Lavoisier's own findings by some 150 years) as well as a refutation of the phlogiston theory. The impetus for the Essays was an enquiry by the Bordeaux apothecary Pierre Brun, as to why tin and lead increased in weight when heated. Lavoisier at first thought the work to be a forgery but by 1792 he wrote a highly appreciative account of it in his own Memoires de chimie. Rey's work first appeared in 1630 but was already so rare by the eighteenth century that Nicolas Gobet published a new edition augmented with a new preface, footnotes, and a letter by the chemist Pierre Bayen (who first drew attention to the Essays in 1775), correspondence between Rey and … [Click Below for Full Description]
