Francesco & Paolo SANTINI (Attivi a Venezia seconda metà del XVIII secolo)
Fine example of the first state Santini's 6-sheet map of the Northern Part of the Ottoman Empire, centered on the Black Sea, published in Venice in 1779. The map was late reprinted by Giovanni Antonio Remondini. Santini's map is based upon Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni's map of 1774. Rizzi-Zannoni's 3 sheet map of the Northern Ottoman Empire shows the Empire at the tail end of its centuries of control of Southeastern Europe. The map extends north and east to the Caspian Sea and Cossack Regions, and west to Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria, providing a fantastic geographical and topographical depiction of the region. Includes a fine decorative cartouche. The 6 sheet map was bound into the Atlas Universel. While there is some overlapping geography on the horizontal sheets, the sheets can be cut and joined to form a 6-sheet map approximately 60 inches wide and 34 inches tall. Copperplate with original outline colour, 6 sheet map, unjoined, with full margins, light waterstain in the lower white margins, otherwise very good condition.

Anonimo
Impresso su carta vergata coeva (mm. 284 x 411), coloritura coeva, in basso a sinistra, annotazione manoscritta a matita "W.R.T. Venice: May 20, 1895", in ottimo stato di conservazione. [Click Below for Full Description]

Guenee, Antoine
Dublin: William Watson, 1777. First edition. Hardcover. 445, 428 pages. 21 x 14 cm. The controversy of Voltaire's anti-Semitism has been long disputed. He was at war with both Judaism and Christianity. He wanted to purge all men, of whatever persuasion, from these superstitions in order to make them enlightened. He ridiculed each of the major religions, but he was meanest to the Jews: ''You have surpassed all nations in impertinent fables, in bad conduct and in barbarism." Jacobins such as Jean Francois Rewbell in the 1790's and the socialist Pierre Proudhon in the next generation are among the many figures, especially of the left, who justified their arguments against the Jews by quoting Voltaire. Scattered toning, mostly in first and last leaves, tight and firm copy. Modern black leatherette, spines printed in gilt. Very good. 2 vols. Item #20951. [Attributes: First Edition]

JORDAN, John.
London Printed for the Author, and sold by S. Hooper... G. Kearsley... S. Leacroft... J. Robson and Co.... and J. Keating, Stratford upon Avon, 1777. 4to (260 × 210 mm) in half-sheets, pp. 48; with a large engraved title vignette ('The West View of Welcombe Hills') and a subscribers' list on pp. [39]-48; title and final page darkened and marked, small hole to title, some neat restoration to the blank verso, final leaf sometime reinforced in the fore-margin, old dampstain in the gutter towards the end; modern quarter calf. Scarce first (and only) edition, dedicated to 'the accomplished Mrs. Lloyd, Relict of the late Worthy John Lloyd, Esq; of Snitterfield, near Stratford'. Aubin describes it as 'very strong in antiquities and has as chief attraction a pathetic tale of early English times' (p. 94). This is the only work by Jordan, self-appointed Shakespeare sage of the late eighteenth century, to be published in his lifetime. A wheelwright by trade, and keen amateur actor, Jordan was a popular tour guide in Stratford. As a man full of Shakespeare lore (he promoted, for example, the story of Shakespeare's mulberry tree), he cannot resist including the Bard here: 'Hence eastward, Warwick tow'rs attract the sight; / And westward, Stratford domes no less delight, / Chiefly that ancient solemn pile, whose stones / Have long enclos'd the much-lov'd Shakespear's bones' (pp. 33-4), with a footnote on the 'not inelegant monument' in the Church, 'with his bust to the waste [sic], and his face painted to imitate flesh-colour, according to the absurd taste of those times.' [LUND, John].
London: Printed for the Author, and sold by him and J. Lyndley, Bookseller, in Pontefract, 1777. 8vo (193 × 123 mm) in half-sheets, pp. [2], ii, [2], 7-103, [1]; loss of catchwords on I4, M1-3, and N3 (punched out by the type), lower corner of K1 torn away (loss to a couple of words on the verso), some foxing or other marks throughout, final leaf dust-soiled, old inkstamp of Wigan Public Libraries to title verso; recent wrappers. First edition of this collection, Ducks and Pease having first been published in 1776 (Huntington only in ESTC). Lund was apparently a barber from Pontefract, where a contemporary declared his satires 'would not disgrace the pen of a Churchill' (quoted in Oxford DNB). In his Preface, the poet apologises for the 'incorrectness' and 'strokes of obscenity' which characterised his earlier publications. 'Some People may be apt to say, I might better Emply my Time. If I neglected by Business for the Sake of scribling [sic], they might with Justice blame me; but I do assure them they are the Productions of my leisure Hours only... I please myself that, every unbias'd and candid Reader... will excuse my Errors, and be pleased with the Dish of Ducks and Pease I offer them, when I assure them, if I cou'd have cook'd and seasoned them better, to suit their Palates, I most certainly wou'd have done it.' [POLWHELE, Richard].
Bath: Printed by R. Cruttwell, for the Author; and sold by E. and C. Dilly... London, 1777. 4to (260 × 203 mm), pp. [6], 5-55, [1]; lower margin of F1 cut away, old stamp ('Merton House') to final leaf; complete with the half-title (errata on verso), bound here after the author's 'Advertisement'; recent wrappers. Very rare first edition of Polwhele's first separate publication. He was seventeen when he wrote this celtic-gothic piece, and the Monthly Review, playing off the 'Truro School' concealment of Polwhele's authorship, commented that the schoolmaster should have kept it in manuscript; the school replied that it had no knowledge of the poem. According to Oxford DNB, 'this premature appearance in print impaired Polwhele's reputation.' Certainly the poem is rare enough that one could imagine an attempt made to suppress it, and a copy at Cardiff, noted in COPAC, is heavily marked up with manuscript deletions and amendments. Jackson, p. 53. ESTC locate 4 copies only (BL, Bodley, 2 copies, Somerset Archaeological Society); WorldCat adds one at Brown. In some copies, the imprint is without a date. [PERRY, James] 'Adam STRONG', [pseudonym].
London: Printed for J. Bew, 1777. 4to (290 × 210 mm), pp. [4], iii, [1], 19, [2], complete with the half-title; early manuscript insertions; first leaf rather dusty, some fragility; uncut; modern quarter calf. First edition. 'A satirical poem on the amours of various members of the nobility' (ESTC) or, as the Monthly Review succinctly put it: 'Poetical smut. Rochester revived.' A number of imitations and replies were elicited. It is early work by Perry (formerly 'Pirie', 1756-1821), a Scottish journalist recently arrived in London 'to try to break into the literary world' (Oxford DNB). By the end of his career he had become 'one of the most notable journalists of the age when the newspaper press was becoming established as a force in the country' (ibid.) Studies of Gymnotus electricus by members of Royal Society and their correspondents had captured the imagination of the British public in unexpected ways. While the investigations of Walsh and Hunter made genuine discoveries into the nature of electricity (which culminated in the invention of Volta's battery), contemporary wits and pamphleteers took advantage of the phallic connotations of the eel and its electrical properties to deride the sexual peregrinations of London society. In this copy several of the printed lacunae have been filled in by a contemporary hand, identifying Lady Sarah Bunbury and Lady Grafton, among others, as devotees of the electrical eel. Jackson, p. 52. Order directly from our website for free shipping worldwide.

[NEW YORK STATE CONSTITUTION]
Fishkill, NY, 1777. After independence was declared, each state had to create a new government to replace their colonial charters. New York's Constitutional Convention, originally convened as the Fourth New York Provincial Congress, assembled at White Plains on Sunday evening, July 10, 1776. Fleeing northward as the British Army forced George Washington's Continental Army out of New York City, it deliberated at several locations. John Jay, Robert R. Livingston, and Gouverneur Morris drafted the new Constitution, which, with only one dissenting vote, was enacted at Kingston on April 20, 1777.A second pamphlet printed the Ordinance passed when the Convention convened again on May 8, 1777, in Kingston, to establish a temporary government. The Convention appointed fifteen men as a Council of Safety, "invested with all the powers necessary for the safety and preservation of the State, until a meeting of the Legislature." The trip began on April 1, 1777 , in Vienna. The emperor travelled under the pseudonym Count of Falkenstein and was accompanied by the Austrian general Joseph von Colloredo (1735-1818), the diplomat Ludovico, Count di Belgiojoso (1728-1801), the physician Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla (1728-1800) and Philipp von Cobenzl (1741-1810), the author of the present manuscript. S. Weir Mitchell, M.D. 1908 "A Venture in 1777"
1777. Fair condition. Please see pics for details. This is an autographed book of "A Venture in 1777" by the author, S. Weir Mitchell. It was published in September 1908. It is in fair condition with a stained cover and loose binding. The pages are in good condition with only the expected discoloration. Inserted in the book are some folded loose-leaf pages that include an article written by W. W. Keen, M.D. that references his relationship with Mitchell. The book's inscription appears to have been written by two prominent Philadelphians. First by Corrine Keen Freeman, Dr. W. W. Keen's oldest daughter, as a presentation of the book to her son W. W. Keen Freeman on Easter, 1910. The second is by the author himself, which again acknowledges his fond relationship with Dr. Keen. Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) was an American physician and writer known for his discovery of causalgia and erythromelalgia. William Williams Keen Jr. (1837-1931) was an American doctor who was the first brain surgeon in the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
1777. Broadside. Limited edition replica by Mindy Belhoff, 100 copies. New York: Intima Press, 2010, printed in black and brown, hand set in Caslon & letterpress. With Essays, 16 x 21 in., printed in blue and red. Both printed on handmade cotton & linen paper custom made by Katie MacGregor, Maine. 16 x 21 in. The Belhoff replica:Research & printing took place January thru September 2009, as originally designed & printed by Mary Katharine Goddard, January 1777. "Setting the Declaration in type was enlightening in many ways, as my thoughts throughout the process were of Mary Katharine in her print shop during the cold month of January, not having 21st century amenities. I could not help but wonder how Mary Katharine must have felt being entrusted to print this stunning proclamation while setting each letter of the text 'all Men are created equal.' Therefore, on July 4th, 2010, I went to press on a second unambiguous edition proclaiming 'all People are created equal'," explained Mindy Belloff. "Mary Katharine was an incredibly brave woman for her time. By her actions, she was clearly a pioneer for women's rights and freedom of the press." (Mindy Belhoff).ConditionFine. Bright and clean.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
London, 1777. This history of British affairs notes increasing bitterness on the part of Americans, prints the Declaration of Independence and proposed Articles of Confederation, and comments on the disruption of trade, military action, etc. It chronicles events, historical sketches of people around the world, scientific gains, essays and state papers. The Declaration is printed with some sanitizing edits to make it slightly less insulting to the King, ie: "The history of the present __ __ __, is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations; all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states." (State Papers, pp 261-264) [DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE].Book. The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politics, and Literature, For the Year 1776... London: Printed for J. Dodsley, in Pall Mall, 1777. 270 pp.In an earlier section, it includes a surprisingly unfiltered American patriots' view of reaction."The declaration of independence...was read at the head of each brigade of the continental army, posted at and near New York, and every where received with loud huzzas, &c.; and the same evening the equestrian statue of his Majesty...was laid prostrate on the ground, and the lead of it destined to serve as bullets. The same declaration was ready pretty much about the same time, in almost every other town of the united colonies, and every where received with equal demonstrations of joy." (Chronicle, 159)Editorial comments support a firm British response: "the conduct of the Americans, recommending a perseverance in the same s … [Click Below for Full Description]
