PINI Ermenegildo
Milano,: presso Giuseppe Marelli, 1777. Milano, presso Giuseppe Marelli, 1777. In-16 gr. Rara "edizione originale", dedicata dall’A. [Click Below for Full Description]

WRAXALL, Nathaniel William.
London: Edward and Charles Dilly, 1777. 2 volumes octavo (208 x 130 mm). Contemporary polished calf, sprinkled red and green, red morocco labels, raised bands, gilt rules, numbered direct in the third compartment, milled edge-roll gilt. just a little rubbed, corners bumped, tan burn to the endpapers and first few leaves front and back, pale toning else, a very good set in entirely unrestored contemporary condition. First edition. An extremely pretty set of this popular combined historical memoir and epistolary travelogue. Wraxall (1751–1831), who is best remembered for his scandalous Historical Memoirs of My Own Time (1815), is here similarly drawn to the "liveliness" of anecdote; "From this principle it is, that Memoirs, though less noble and august than History, are yet generally more just to nature, and interest us in a livelier degree. Confined to a narrower sphere, but diffuse and minute, they satisfy the restless curiosity of the mind, to know those trivial and unimportant transactions of the individual, which history disdains to enumerate, and passes over in silence" (p.4). This set from the library of Charles William Vane, third marquess Londonderry (1778–1854), his elaborate armourial bookplates to the front pastedowns. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Chatterton, Thomas]
London: T. Payne, 1777. First Edition. Old mend to an edge tear t o the margin of G4; bookplate (Thomas Pryce); early ownership signature on title page; scattered spots; a nice, clean copy.. 8vo, xxvii, [1], 307pp; engraved plate inserted facing p. 288; nineteenth century three-quarter crushed morocco gilt, t.e.g; custom slipcase. Second state, with the "Advertisement" leaf in front cancelled. Chatterton committed suicide before his eighteenth birthday, having published but one of these poems, ostensibly by the fifteenth century poet of his own invention. This edition, edited by the Chaucer scholar Thomas Tyrwhitt, asserted the poems' authenticity, but upon reconsideration -- and disputes from leading contemporary poets -- his second edition in 1778 acknowledged Chatterton's authorship. A handsome copy of a work that left a deep impression on the English Romantic poets. Hayward 188.

Haselden, Thomas
J. Crukshank, London, Printed: Philadelphia, Re-printed, 1777. [8],160pp. Small quarto. Contemporary calf. Hinges neatly reinforced, boards a bit rubbed and shelfworn. Contemporary ownership signatures of Daniel Henderson on front endpapers and titlepage. Light, even tanning; an occasional bit of marginal staining. Very good. First American edition of this work, and the first book regarding practical navigation to be printed in the United States. It appeared fully twenty years before any other similar work in America. ESTC locates a total of only seven copies (CSmH, CtY, DLC, MWA, RPJCB, MiU-C, NN). Haselden was a prolific writer of guides for navigators and seamen, best known for his work concerning Mercator's chart and its uses. When the present work first appeared in 1722, he styled himself "Teacher of Mathematics.in the Royal Navy," and he was held in sufficiently high regard to be elected to the Royal Society in 1740, but he died before he could be installed as a Fellow. The present work was not issued in his lifetime, but was first printed by mapmakers Mount & Page in 1757. They kept it regularly in print (six more editions were issued between 1761 and 1775), and it had become a standard work by the time this Philadelphia edition was published, no doubt an attempt to provide a basic work for mariners whose supply of British editions was cut off by the American Revolution. The text covers a wide variety of information needed by sailors, from discerning latitude and longitude to various sailing methods to tips for keeping a journal while at sea. This work's rarity may p … [Click Below for Full Description]

SOCIALISM] [FRANCE] MABLY, [Gabriel Bonnot de
Société Typographique, 1777. Second Edition. Both a critique and history of European inequality by the French philosopher deeply influenced by the works of John Locke. Described as an "avant-garde thinker of utopian socialism" (Sophus Reinert and Steven Kaplan, eds., "The Economic Turn" (2019), p. [339]), the Abbé de Mably (1709-1785) roundly rejected any institution that could reduce the well-being of one in favor of another, among these the concept of private property. Indeed, in Chapter IV in the first volume states that it be necessary for legislation to "turn all its forces against avarice and ambition" (p. 96, our translation). A life-long friend of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the underlining theme of the work consistently circles back to the concept of "Nature," in this case self-preservation at present undermined by the state of society. Two volumes in one; small 12mo (16cm.); slightly later paper-covered boards, manuscript private library spine labels, all edges speckled red; [2],viii,248; [2],iv,250pp. Spine a bit sunned, corners bumped, light spotting to boards, tiny rubberstamps of a Donaueschingen library to both title page versos, else a Near Fine, internally fresh copy, half titles present. First published one year prior, in 1776.

[Click Below for Full Description]
