TARTAROTTI, Jacopo - TODESCHINI, Domenico Francesco.
Venezia. Testatina e capilettera incisi. Formato: viii, 292 p., 8° (19 cm), mezza pergamena coeva con tassello in pelle coi titoli in oro al dorso. Buono, ordinari segni d’uso e del tempo, nome manoscritto d'epoca al piede del frontespizio.

FAUVEL
Vienna: F. Godefroy, 1777. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 5 x 6 3/4". Framed 15 3/4 x 16" This informative engraving by Fauvel depicts the surrender of General John Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga on 17th October 1777 during the American Revolutionary War. The image shows the British army on the left and the American army on the right with General Burgoyne surrendering his sword to Major General Horatio Gates. The Battle of Saratoga is considered a turning point in the American Revolutionary War that won the Americans foreign assistance from France. Following Burgoyne's surrendering the sword, which was returned, the British army surrendered their arms while the American army played "Yankee Doodle", which is depicted here in the view. The view is in good condition with minor foxing. Nicely framed.

MORGANN, Maurice.]
London: for T. Davies, 1777. Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary tan calf, red morocco label, gilt rules either side of raised bands, red sprinkled edges. Early ownership inscription of W. Radcliffe on front pastedown, under remains of bookplate. Headcap worn, joints cracked at head and tail but holding firm, a couple of creased corners, contents clean, a very good copy. With the half-title. First edition. Morgann "took issue with Dr Johnson as to whether the knight was a fat, drunken coward or a figure worthy of admiration. In a close analysis of Shakespeare's technique as a dramatist, Morgann argued that Shakespeare's intent was to gain sympathy from the audience for Falstaff at the expense of the virtuous young king and, in doing so, reverse or question accepted moral values. Consequently, in Morgann's essay, Falstaff becomes something of a witty, good-natured Don Quixote figure who displays true courage" (ODNB). Johnson's response was scornful – "Why, Sir, we shall have the man come forth again; and as he has proved Falstaff to be no coward, he may prove Iago to be a very good character" – but Morgann's essay greatly influenced literary criticism of 1 Henry IV well into the 20th century, particularly the literary approaches of Edward Dowden and A. C. Bradley. Jaggard 222. [Attributes: First Edition]

MARMONTEL, Jean-François (1723-99]
Lacombe: Paris, 1777. Two volumes, 19.5 cm, full straight-grained navy blue morocco, all page edges gilt, bound-in ribbon markers, pink endpapers. pp [iii]-xii, (339, errata), [3]; (2), 380, (4, approbation and privilege), [2]. Engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates by de Launay, Duclos, de Ghendt, Helman, Leveau, Née and Simonet after Jean Michel Moreau Le Jeune (complete). Bindings has light wear to the edges and corners; mild foxing early and late; light toning to several plates; inner hinges cracked but firm; 7 cm tear to lower inner corner of front free endpaper of volume II neatly repaired; VG+ otherwise, the contents quite clean and fresh. Sabin 44652; Cohen-De Ricci 690. Marmontel's account of the fall of the Inca Empire, sympathetic to the Indians if somewhat melodramatic, nicely illustrated. Because a chapter calling for religious tolerance in his book BÉLISAIRE earned him the censure of the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris, in LES INCAS he retaliated by attributing the cruelty of the Spanish to their religious zeal. Significant as an Enlightenment era plea for tolerance, the work proved popular and went through numerous editions in several languages. Jean-François Marmontel was a French historian, writer, librettist, prominent member of the Encyclopédistes, friend of Voltaire, and from 1783, perpetual secretary of the Académie. Front paste-down with the engraved armorial bookplate of Ross Ambler Curran, early twentieth-century California society figure and bibliophile. Note: 1.5 kg parcel, extra postage may be required. Binding: Hardcover .

American War of Independence.) FIRST BATTALION OF PENNSYLVANIA LOYALISTS,
Printed by James Humphreys Junr. December 30, 1777. folio broadside, approx. 32 x 23 cm, printed on recto only, very browned, with darker patches, but withal legible, in an old plain wooden frame, glazed, rebacked. Only one copy of this broadside is recorded in ESTC, at the Library Company of Philadelphia, and that copy lacks the date at the top. Before the first lines given above appears the motto: Tuecro duce nil desperandum; and above that the date. The broadside offers bounties to those volunteering to serve with the King's troops. A regiment was raised, but with difficulty. The condition of this copy is not ideal. It would seem to have been in this frame for a very long time, the backing of which, originally, was very acidic - now replaced with acid-free material. To add insult to injury, the broadside was at some time lavished with a thick layer of varnish, now removed. How much of the browning is attributable to the latter, rather than the former, is impossible to determine. But the fact remains that the text is entirely legible, and this copy provides the date. The low survival rate of the broadside is not hard to fathom. Even when it was promulgated there would have been those intent on destroying it, let alone it being much regarded post bellum. Beringer, David
A very attractive diptych sundial and compass probably produced by the German craftsman David Beringer. Previously sundials of this type had been made in engraved ivory or metal as luxury items, but Beringer was one of the first compass makers to realise that using wood and printed paper would bring the price down and widen the market. His workshop flourished between about 1777 and his death in 1821, and his name became synonymous with portable wooden diptych and cube sundials. Like this example, many of his pieces were made for the international market or for travelers who would need to use the sundial at different latitudes. The gnomen string can be adjusted for latitudes between 40 and 54, and a list on the lid gives the latitudes for 48 cities, including London, Dublin, Prague, Paris, Florence, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Berlin, as well as New York City. This is a very nice, entirely original, and fully functional example of this ephemeral make of sundial. Diptych sundial and compass. Unsigned but probably by Beringer, late 18th or very early 19th century. Fruitwood and printed paper, 45 x 70 mm. Paper on the lid just a little dulled and rubbed, interior paper slightly faded, a little rubbing, superficial cracks along the base, a little dust within the compass. Original string gnomen, latches, and compass needle and glass. Very good condition.
