Lafayette, Marquis de
1777. He speaks well of the nephew of his patron in arranging his joining the American cause in 1777, and mentions numerous worthies, including Thomas Jefferson's grandson This letter speaks to Lafayette's strong ties to Harvard In August 1775, the Marquis de Lafayette was introduced to the Charles François, the Count de Broglie, commander of the French Army of the East. Through Broglie, Lafayette became associated with the Freemasons, who advocated freedom both in France and America. One of the most memorable events in the Marquis' life occurred when de Broglie invited the Duke of Gloucester to dinner and the Duke criticized the colonists. After hearing the reasons as to why the colonists where fighting for their freedom, the Marquis became convinced that he had to join in the effort. Lafayette wrote, "When I first learned of that quarrel, my heart was enlisted and I thought only of joining the colors." After this encounter, the Marquis convened with like-minded gentlemen in Paris to discuss the involvement of France in the American Revolution. One was Johann de Kalb, a Prussian-born soldier on de Broglie's staff. The men agreed to go to America as volunteers. Broglie at first rebuffed Lafayette, saying that his duty was to his family and France. But Lafayette persisted; Broglie relented and sent Lafayette with Kalb to see American envoy Silas Deane, who was seeking volunteers among the French officer corps. The young marquis was not the type of seasoned recruit that Deane sought, but Lafayette recalled, "I spoke more of my ardor in the cause than of my experience." W … [Click Below for Full Description]

At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Treaties].
The Hague, Jacobus Scheltus, 1777. - 4to. 26 pp. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. Red modern cloth with giltstamped spine title. Renewal of the bilateral Treaty of Peace and Commerce of 1752 between the Netherlands and Morocco, then ruled by Sultan Abdallah IV (Moulay Abdallah ibn Moulay Ismail ibn Moulay Chérif ibn Moulay Ali of the Alaouite dynasty, styled "Keiser van de Ryken der Maroccen, Fez, Mequinez, Suz en Algarven" in Dutch). The renewal was signed at Salé, 29 June 1777, when the open-minded Mohammed ibn Abdallah was Sultan. In December same year, the Sultanate of Morocco became the first nation whose head of state publicly recognized the United States as an independent nation. - Since the late 16th century the Netherlands had been attempting to establish friendly relations with Islamic countries, such as the Ottoman Empire and Morocco, due to their common enmity with catholic Spain. The first "Treaty of Friendship and Free Commerce" between the two countries had been signed as early as 1610, offering "free access and friendly reception for their respective subjects with any need for safeguard or safe-conduct, no matter how they come to the others' territory". - Slight browning, but well-preserved. Euphrate: Dumpleres, 1777. hardcover. 2 folding pages illustrated with small engravings. [10], 132, [2], 238, [2] pages. Small 8vo, original mottled calf with ornate gilt-stamped spine (lightly worn at ends); speckled edges, Euphrate: Chez Freres Dumpleres, 1777 & 1779 First Edition. Scarce. Some neat contemporary ink marginalia throughout, still a very good(+) copy of this exceedingly scarce book. OCLC lists only 3 copies, including those at Harvard & Stanford. While still young he wrote texts on agriculture and economics, expressing his wish to share his land with his neighbors, thus transforming the ideals of the Enlightenment philosophers into practice. These are his first books, Projet de Communaute philosophe (1777) and Maison de Reunion pour la Communaute Philosophe (1779) which advocate the idea of living in a sort of commune. In 1785, just before the French revolution, he was referred to as a communist in a book review by Restif de la Bretonne; according to some sources, this was the first time that the word "communism" was used in print in its modern sense. -- Wikipedia.

[Sheridan, Richard Brinsley]
Dublin: s.n, 1777. Dublin piracy. Lacking half-title. [iv], 39 [i.e. 40] pp. (pp. 38, 39 and 40 misnumbered 32, 38 and 39 respectively). 12mo. Pirated Dublin edition of Sheridan's popular burlesque opera The Duenna, with the title and character names changed. An early owner has supplied the correct names in pencil on the dramatis personæ page (i.e. "Isaac" for Enoch Issachar, "Antonio" for Octavio). The text was taken down by shorthand during a Dublin performance and differs substantially from the authorized London edition of 1794. The manager of the Crow-Street theater was unsuccessfully prosecuted for his involvement in staging this unauthorized version. ESTC notes two variant mispaginations; this copy with the final three pages mispaginated. ESTC T138772; Williams, p. 215. Disbound. Correct character names supplied in pencil on dramatis personæ page ("Isaac" for Enoch Issachar, etc). In gray card folder.

MORGANN, Maurice.]
London: for T. Davies, 1777. London: for T. Davies,, 1777. Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary tan calf, red morocco label, gilt rules either side of raised bands, red sprinkled edges. With the half-title. Early ownership inscription of W. Radcliffe on front pastedown, under remains of bookplate. Headcap worn, joints cracked at head and tail but holding firm, a couple of creased corners, contents clean, a very good copy. First edition. Morgann "took issue with Dr Johnson as to whether the knight was a fat, drunken coward or a figure worthy of admiration. In a close analysis of Shakespeare's technique as a dramatist, Morgann argued that Shakespeare's intent was to gain sympathy from the audience for Falstaff at the expense of the virtuous young king and, in doing so, reverse or question accepted moral values. Consequently, in Morgann's essay, Falstaff becomes something of a witty, good-natured Don Quixote figure who displays true courage" (ODNB). Johnson's response was scornful - "Why, Sir, we shall have the man come forth again; and as he has proved Falstaff to be no coward, he may prove Iago to be a very good character" - but Morgann's essay greatly influenced literary criticism of 1 Henry IV well into the 20th century, particularly the literary approaches of Edward Dowden and A. C. Bradley. Jaggard 222.
