Robert & Richard Wilsons, Edinburgh, 1777. The folded map is the frontispiece in this edition of the "Town and Country Almanack for the year 1777. The map, unfolds to 9 x 9.5ins and is in good condiiton apart from a little foxing or browning and a little curling to the right hand lower corner margin [no loss]. It shows the eastern seaboard of america from the Gulf of St Laurrence in the north to the mouths of the Missisipi [sic] in the south. It extends to the west as far as New Orleans and Akansas. The 12mo almanack measures approx 5 x 3ins and has 180pp of official lists including lists of officers in the various regiments of the army. The naval section includes a whole page listing the numerous ships stationed in America as well as those in Newfooundland. It retains its contemporary binding of brown leather with an envelope flat, very worn to the spines but it is most unusal to come across a book of this sort which has not hand the American map removed. a blank page before the map and some 16 blank pages at the rear have farming details including sowing and lists of day's pay to named shearers. Farming takes priority over politics for the original owner of this almanack. The lists of names, especially the military, are interesting as the book was published just after the American Declaration of Independence and appeared in the yeat of Burgoyne's surrender Saratoga and France's entry into the War on the American side. Size: 9 x 9.5 Ins Unfolded Map Size. Book 12mo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MACAULAY, CATHARINE
Bath: Printed and Sold by R. Cruttwell, for the Benefit of a Worthy Clergyman, in Distress, [1777], 1777. First edition. ESTC T106176, recording three locations in the UK and ten in the US; NCBEL II, 676 (R. Polwhele). An inoffensive contemporary ink stain in the margin of one page; title-page a little dust-soiled; very good copy. Rare.. 4to, modern marbled paper boards, red morocco label, gilt lettering. A rare literary festschrift for author and historian Catharine Macaulay (1731-1791) on the occasion of her 46th birthday, organized by her friend Thomas Wilson, a clergyman of Bath who shared many of Macaulay's liberal republican views. Macaulay had accepted Wilson's invitation to live at his home, Alfred House, after which he arranged this birthday celebration that included her sitting on a throne, listening to odes written for the occasion. This pamphlet, which contains an account of the festivities and some other explanatory material, as well as the odes, was published to commemorate the event. The profit from the sales were to go to an unnamed clergyman in need. The author, "A Youth of Seventeen Years of Age," of the fourth ode was English poet Richard Polwhele (1760-1838), and according to the DNB this is his first appearance in print. NCBEL does list another title by Polwhele the same year, ahead of this one.

[GOTTER (Fr. Guill.)]

(Vorwort).
