1777. Plate 54: This plate shows neoclassical designs and ornaments. Copperplate engraving on a verge type of hand-laid paper. Description: This rare antique print originates from 'Designs for Neoclassical Ornaments' by Michael Angelo Pergolesi. London 1777-1792: Published By the Author. Broadsheet folio with 67 etched plates by and after Pergolesi.Artists and Engravers: Michael Angelo Pergolesi was an Italian decorative artist from the 18th century who worked mainly in England. Biographical details are almost entirely lacking, but like Cipriani he was brought, or attracted, to England by Robert Adam after his famous continental tour. He worked so extensively for the Adams', and his designs are so closely typical of much upon which their reputation rests, that it is impossible to doubt his influence upon their style. His range, like theirs, was catholic. He designed furniture, mantelpieces, ceilings, chandeliers, doors and mural ornament with equal felicity, and as an artist in plaster work in low relief he was unapproached in his day. Condition: Good/excellent. General age-related toning and light staining from handling as visible on image. Some tears in the margins, not affecting image. Irregular left edge from binding. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: DP-B7-08 The overall size is ca. 13.8 x 20.5 inch. The image size is ca. 10.6 x 18.1 inch. The overall size is ca. 35 x 52 cm. n.d.. Address leaf franked “Public Service / Majr Genl St. Clair,” addressed by him to “General Irwine / at / Carlisle,” 13” x 8.5”, address panel 7” x 3.5”. On laid paper, professionally silked for preservation. Fine condition.

On February 19, 1777, Arthur St. Clair was appointed Major General by Congress and was given the command of Fort Ticonderoga. In 1778, he was court-martialed for the loss of the Fort, but was exonerated and returned to duty, although he was no longer given any battlefield commands. On March 4, 1791, Arthur St. Clair was promoted to Major General by President Washington and was placed in command of the Army. In a March 19, 1791, letter to Lafayette, President George Washington writes, “Your friend, General St. Clair resumes his functions as Major General.” Ostensibly, even though St. Clair had been a Major General since being appointed by the Continental Congress in 1777, Pres. Washington thought it proper to issue a presidential commission as Major General as he “resumes his functions.” He has franked this address leaf as “Majr Genl. St. Clair.” General Irvine lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where most letters to him were sent during and after the Revolutionary War. It is interesting to note, that in the published letters of George Washington to Gen. Irvine, his name is misspelled “Irwine” as St. Clair has penned on this address leaf.

On November 4, 1791, Major General St. Clair, 1st Governor of the Northwest Territory since 1788, led an expedition against the Indians that resulte … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAILLY, (Jean Sylvain). Astrologie - Astronomie - Chinesische Astronomie - Sternkarte
Leipzig, im Schwickertschen Verlage, 1777. 2 Teile in 1 Band. 8 Blatt, 334 Seiten, 1 Blatt; 399 Seiten, 2 Blatt, 3 gefalt. Kupfertafeln. [Click Below for Full Description]

I, 205 - Wellcome II, 58 (nur engl. Übers.) - Libr. of the Karolinska Inst. 128f.: "The above work is considerably enlarged with an account of the defence of Anne Grandjean, also known by the name of Johann Baptist Grandjean, a case regarding a hermaphrodite which was discussed not only in Paris but all over Europe. Even if fanciful illustrations of hermaphrodites had occured several times in books and prints, the figures in Arnaud`s work and the two copperplates by Moreau le Jeune seem to be the earliest depictions in printed form of this phenomena drawn d`après nature." - die meisten Abbildungen sin … [Click Below for Full Description]

(dont 1 pl. de musique) ; Edition originale.Cat.
