Cadell in the Strand, 1777. 1777 1ed Captain James Cook 2nd Voyage MAPS Tahiti Antarctica Arctic COMPLETE 3v"Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it." - James CookJames Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. His second voyage, which was supported by the British government, was set out to circumnavigate the world by means of going as far south as possible. This voyage, which is significantly less reported on than his third and final voyage, took Cook to locations such as Easter Island, Tahiti, and the Arctic Circle - Cook became the first to cross the Arctic Circle. Perhaps the most important discovery from this voyage was proving that no continent existed between New Zealand and South America - a common theory amongst centuries of European navigators and historians. This complete first edition is an exceptional work! It is supplemented with 63 engravings, some double-page and folding, depicting his adventures in the Southern hemisphere.Hill states,"This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid to finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy."According to Lowndes,"This account of the second voyage of Capt. Cook is chiefly devoted to the description of scientific and philosophical subjects."Per 'Printing and the Mind of Man',"Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. Heirs of Hippocrates [919 : "Le Boursier, a prominent Parisian midwife, first published the present work in 1759 without illustrations. The success of the book encouraged her to have later editions illustrated by Jean Robert (fl. 1746-1782). The 1769 edition was the first book on midwifery to appear with plates printed in multiple colors. Robert, a pupil of Le Blon, is known to have illustrated only three books and this was his most copiously illustrated book. The finely applied colors often appear to be hand-painted rather than printed."] ___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DE … [Click Below for Full Description]

Porbase (1 copy); cf. Innocêncio IV, 96 and XII, 80 (issue in proceedings); for the author: Protásio, "MACEDO, JOAQUIM JOSÉ DA COSTA DE (1777-1867)" in: Dicionário de Historiadores Portugueses. A detailed scholarly study of ancient sources for the history and geography of the Canary Islands, attempting to prove that the Portuguese discovered them before Islamic explorers, and that Islamic geographers knew them only through classical Greek and Roman sources. The main text is followed by extensive notes from a wide variety of sources and transcriptions of numerous primary sources, some in Greek or Arabic. In passing it also provides a wealth of information about navigation in the Mediterranean and Atlantic by classical Greek and Roman and by Islamic explorers. While Macedo's claim for Malocello's discovery of the Canaries in 1336 is no longer accepted, the Islamic geographer Idrisi noted a Portuguese voyage to the Canaries already before 1154.In fine condition and wholly untrimmed, giving very large margins. The modern wrapper is slightly tattered.

SAVIGNY, Marie Jules-César Lelorgue de.
Nissen, IVB 819; Ronsil 2718; Wood, p. 552. First and only edition of a natural and mythological history of the ibis by Marie Jules-César Lelorgue de Savigny (1777-1851). It contains six engravings after drawings by two major natural history illustrators: Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) and Jacques Barraband (1768-1809), of which four are hand-coloured. The book gives an account of the black and the white ibis, their mythical position in ancient Egypt and the related cults, their natural habitat and answers the question whether they eat snakes or not. The engravings show the black and the white ibis, close-ups from the beak and leg and some Egyptian illustrations. Barraband is well known for his beautiful ornithological illustrations for Levaillant's works on parrots and birds of paradise. "A learned essay on the Ibis, with observations made during the author's sojourn in Egypt. A rare book ..." (Wood). With a faint and somewhat blotted library stamp on half-title, title-page somewhat soiled, a few occasional small smudges, and plates shaved with slight loss of plate-numbers. Otherwise in good condition.

COOK, James
Printed for W. Strahan; And T. Cadell in the Strand. 1777 1ed Captain James Cook 2nd Voyage MAPS Tahiti Antarctica Arctic COMPLETE 3v “Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it.” – James Cook James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. His second voyage, which was supported by the British government, was set out to circumnavigate the world by means of going as far south as possible. This voyage, which is significantly less reported on than his third and final voyage, took Cook to locations such as Easter Island, Tahiti, and the Arctic Circle – Cook became the first to cross the Arctic Circle. Perhaps the most important discovery from this voyage was proving that no continent existed between New Zealand and South America – a common theory amongst centuries of European navigators and historians. This complete first edition is an exceptional work! It is supplemented with 63 engravings, some double-page and folding, depicting his adventures in the Southern hemisphere. Hill states, “This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid to finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy.” According to Lowndes, “This account of the second voyage of Capt. Cook is chiefly devoted to the description of scientific and philosophical subjects.” Per ‘Printing and the Mind of Man’, “Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. [Click Below for Full Description]

Dampierre de La Salle
1777. Bel exemplaire. Peu commun. [Click Below for Full Description]

A D Philidor
P Emsley, 1777. Rebound - see descrition. Analysis of The Game of Chess, by A D Philidor, published by P Elmsley in 1777, described on the title page as "new and greatly enlarged, which comes in the form of a 'supplement' to the 1749 edition' thus is most likely second edition. The author was a leading chess player in the 18th century This book has been rebound on marbled red hard boards with red leather spine with new end papers. There is some sunning to the spine but very little in the way of wear. The original text block is age yellowed, with a few additional darker stains and the paper hand cut, thus is uneven and slightly rough cut. The second title page and page 8 have some loss (it appears to be for the removal of some notation), that has been professionally repaired. There are also a few minor annotations remaining on the first few pages, but the text is unaffected. The rest of the text block appears to be free of marks or annotations. 305 pages plus 3 'rules' pages. Dimensions 14.5 x 22.5 x 3.5 cm.
