A New and Accurate Map of the Present Seat of War in North America, Comprehending New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New-York &c. Issued London, June 1777, anonymous for Universal Magazine. Historically significant original antique map. Issued June, 1777, just as the British troops under Burgoyne were to arrive from Canada to seize control of New York Harbor (center right side of map). The British in the month after this map was issued would go on to control New York city for several years, but met against George Washington's Continental Army forces in major significant decisive battles. Map has been affixed to a slightly large backing manilla paper sheet by a previous owner. There are several mostly short splits along a couple of the fold lines, blank margins have been trimmed away although truth is, this may well represent the state it was in within the original periodical. The overall visual appearance of this significant historical map remain still quite attractive. Entirely worthy of ownership, display, etc. Scarce 18th century American Revolutionary war map, issued by the British, depicting Atlantic seaboard North America in an area of major naval and military engagement. In Good or better condition. Not a perfect example, but still overall clean and appealing. Minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, slight paper shaving inside neatline at bottom right, tiny corner chip top right, various other small age flaws which all combine to create a nice surviving example of a rare American Revolution era map. Original fold lines as issued for a disposable mont … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Hague, Jacobus Scheltus, 1777. - 4to. 26 pp. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. Red modern cloth with giltstamped spine title. Renewal of the bilateral Treaty of Peace and Commerce of 1752 between the Netherlands and Morocco, then ruled by Sultan Abdallah IV (Moulay Abdallah ibn Moulay Ismail ibn Moulay Chérif ibn Moulay Ali of the Alaouite dynasty, styled "Keiser van de Ryken der Maroccen, Fez, Mequinez, Suz en Algarven" in Dutch). The renewal was signed at Salé, 29 June 1777, when the open-minded Mohammed ibn Abdallah was Sultan. In December same year, the Sultanate of Morocco became the first nation whose head of state publicly recognized the United States as an independent nation. - Since the late 16th century the Netherlands had been attempting to establish friendly relations with Islamic countries, such as the Ottoman Empire and Morocco, due to their common enmity with catholic Spain. The first "Treaty of Friendship and Free Commerce" between the two countries had been signed as early as 1610, offering "free access and friendly reception for their respective subjects with any need for safeguard or safe-conduct, no matter how they come to the others' territory". - Slight browning, but well-preserved. [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHROETER, Johann Samuel 1752-1788
Willm. Napier [PN 67], London, 1777. Oblong folio. Disbound. 1f. (fine decorative engraved title), [1] (blank), 2-45, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Scored for flute or violin and harpsichord. Middle movements of each lesson with the first verse underlaid below flute part, and subsequent verses printed below music. With "N.B. To make this Work of more general use, the words are put to the middle Movements which are chiefly selected from the most favourite Scotch Airs" printed to lower margin of title. Early signature of "Miss Acton" in black ink to upper margin of title. Slightly worn; occasional light foxing and soiling; some very light dampstaining and worming to lower portions of pp. 21-27 and 35-45 respectively. Together with early manuscript verses from one of the collection's Scotch airs, "De'el tak the War" (a.k.a. "Deil tak' the wars") laid in. Octavo. 1 p. In black ink. With titling ("The Wars") to upper margin. Text in English, with significant variation from published versions, particularly in the second verse ("But my brave, my dearest Willy goes through every danger. Oh! Had he been to the Wars a stranger, from my arms he ne'er had gone"). First Edition. Rather scarce. OCLC nos. 931915401,16457555. BUC p. 933. RISM S2216. The "favourite Scotch Airs" to which Schroeter refers were perhaps adapted from his collection of 12 Favorite Scotch Songs for voice, harpsichord, and German flute or violin, which, according to RISM S2214, was also published by Napier (No. 67), ca. 1777. Schroeter's importance lies, Burney wrote, in his being 'the first who brought into England th … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Amsterdam, & se trouve à Liège, Chez F.J. Desoer, 1777. With 4 engraved frontispieces. 4 parts in 2 volumes. 147 pp.; (4), 143 pp.; (4) 144 pp.; (4) 164 pp. Small 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt in compartments, labels with gilt lettering, marbled edges. Gove p. 297; Versins p. 108; cf.: Hartig 50; Trousson pp. 143-144 & 266; Negley 93. Augmented edition of this at the time immense popular adventure-utopia. The original edition appeared in London in 1737 as The memoirs of Sigr. Gaudentio di Lucca. It was mistakenly attributed to Bishop Berkeley. It was not until 1935 that the true author was identified (Lee M. Ellison, Gaudentio Di Lucca, a forgotten utopia 1935). With Berkeley as its supposed author this utopia 'attained to a rank and dignity comparable to that of the Republic of Plato, the Utopia of Sir Thomas More, and the New Atlantis of Lord Bacon' (Ellison). This version was translated from the English by Milts and revised by Saint-Germain, who in the process added several ideas of his own, and it was augmented by Dupuy Demportes. Thus it became one of the most important imitations of the Histoire de Sévarambes by Vairasse d'Alais. The basic story is the confession of Gaudence before the Inquisition about his adventures and travels in and to the land of the Mezzoranies. In this land there were hardly any laws, there was abundance, equality, no death penalty, public warehouses and only one road connected with the outside world.

[Click Below for Full Description]

GESSNER (Salomon):
A Zuric chez l'Auteur, 1777, 1777. 2 volumes. Large 4to, 257 x 195 mms., pp. [xvi], 184; [3], 4 - 190, engraved title-page in each volume, separate engraved title-page in volume 1 for Contes Moraux, list of subscribers in volume 1, 10 full-page engraved plates in each volume, engraved head- and tail-pieces (39 in all) for each tale or section, early 19th century half calf, spotted boards (a little worn). A fine set, with very fresh impressions of the (often erotic) plates. This is certainly one of the most attractive editions of Gessner's works, even in a French translation. Gessner was responsible for choosing the illustrations, and the erotic overtones of many of the engravings perhaps enjoyed a more robust reception in this French translation. Copac locates a copy at the NLS in these islands, and there appear to be numerous copies in North America and Europe. Leemann-van Elck, Salomon Gessner, p. 113 and no. 539; Maler und Dichter der Idylle S. Gessner (1980), no. 88; Goedeke IV, 1, 82, 11; Rümann 329; Lanckoronska/Oehler II, 164; Cohen/de Ricci 432; Lonchamp 329. Not in Meyer.
