[Sheridan, Richard Brinsley]
Dublin: s.n, 1777. Dublin piracy. Lacking half-title. [iv], 39 [i.e. 40] pp. (pp. 38, 39 and 40 misnumbered 32, 38 and 39 respectively). 12mo. Pirated Dublin edition of Sheridan's popular burlesque opera The Duenna, with the title and character names changed. An early owner has supplied the correct names in pencil on the dramatis personæ page (i.e. "Isaac" for Enoch Issachar, "Antonio" for Octavio). The text was taken down by shorthand during a Dublin performance and differs substantially from the authorized London edition of 1794. The manager of the Crow-Street theater was unsuccessfully prosecuted for his involvement in staging this unauthorized version. ESTC notes two variant mispaginations; this copy with the final three pages mispaginated. ESTC T138772; Williams, p. 215. Disbound. Correct character names supplied in pencil on dramatis personæ page ("Isaac" for Enoch Issachar, etc). In gray card folder.

[MORGANN, Maurice.]
London: for T. Davies,, 1777. Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary tan calf, red morocco label, gilt rules either side of raised bands, red sprinkled edges. With the half-title. Early ownership inscription of W. Radcliffe on front pastedown, under remains of bookplate. Headcap worn, joints cracked at head and tail but holding firm, a couple of creased corners, contents clean, a very good copy. First edition. Morgann "took issue with Dr Johnson as to whether the knight was a fat, drunken coward or a figure worthy of admiration. In a close analysis of Shakespeare's technique as a dramatist, Morgann argued that Shakespeare's intent was to gain sympathy from the audience for Falstaff at the expense of the virtuous young king and, in doing so, reverse or question accepted moral values. Consequently, in Morgann's essay, Falstaff becomes something of a witty, good-natured Don Quixote figure who displays true courage" (ODNB). Johnson's response was scornful – "Why, Sir, we shall have the man come forth again; and as he has proved Falstaff to be no coward, he may prove Iago to be a very good character" – but Morgann's essay greatly influenced literary criticism of 1 Henry IV well into the 20th century, particularly the literary approaches of Edward Dowden and A. C. Bradley.

[BREITKOPF, Johann Gottlob Immanuel]
Folding printed map. 8 pp. Large 4to, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1777. First edition of this quite fascinating cartographical work, which includes a specimen of the author's second experiment in map printing. Earlier in the same year, Breitkopf (1719-94), the eminent printer, type-founder, and bookseller, published another slight work entitled Ueber den Druck der geographischen Charten which described his invention for printing maps with movable type. "He claimed to have been the inventor of map printing by the use of types, or what is known as 'typometry.' William Haas, a type-founder of Basle, appears to have previously published a method somewhat similar, but Breitkopf had been experimenting on the matter for some twelve years previously, and it was only his dissatisfaction with the result obtained that induced him to keep his achievements to himself."-Bigmore & Wyman, I, p. 81. This is his second attempt for which he has printed a charming double-page map of the "Das Reich der Liebe" or "Land of Love," entirely from printing types and ornaments. The towns and regions all have delightful names referring to desire, youth, and pleasure. We learn from the text this was written, drawn, composed, and printed within three days, on the occasion of a wedding. A fine copy, without the usual foxing, of a most interesting work. I believe the map is occasionally hand-colored. ❧ Bagrow, History of Cartography, p. 219-(with the map illustrated).

JONES, William.
London: Printed by W. Bowyer and J. Nichols for N. Conant, 1777. London: Printed by W. Bowyer and J. Nichols for N. Conant,, 1777. To which are added two essays; I. On the Poetry of the Eastern Nations. II. On the Arts, commonly called Imitative. Octavo (214 x 139 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, flat spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, gilt rules to sides and board edges, spot-marbled endpapers. Extremities lightly rubbed, wear on bottom corner, internally fresh. An excellent copy. Second edition, first published in 1772. "The success in 1772 of Poems, Consisting Chiefly of Translations from the Asiatick Languages owed much to the fashionable craze for things oriental; according to Elizabeth Montagu, 'The descriptions are so fine, & all the objects so brilliant, that the sense aches at them!' (quoted in Letters, 1.111) As a poet Jones blended philosophical allegory and dramatic narrative into the genre of the oriental verse tale, but as a scholar he created, through his concern for accuracy of translation and comparative linguistic method, a demand for genuine Eastern products while significantly adjusting racial and political stereotypes. His representation of the East includes a translation from Sa'di's Bostan of the advice of King Nushirvan to his son Hormuz; such poems 'a century or two ago … would have been suppressed in Europe, for spreading with too strong a glare the light of liberty and reason' (Works, 10.354). For each stanza of an ode by the fifteenth-century Turkish poet Mesihi, Jones supplied a verse translation, a transliteration in Roman letters … [Click Below for Full Description]

Denis DIDEROT, Jean Le Rond d' ALEMBERT
Third edition of the Encyclopedia, with a portrait of Diderot and d'Alembert at the beginning of volume one, drawn by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and engraved by Louis-Jacques Cathelin, as well as numerous borders and culs-de-lampe. The engravings in the collection of plates are the work of Bernard Direx and Richomme and make up a total of 469 plates (volume 1 : 101, volume 2 : 197 and volume 3 : 171).Contemporary spotted brown calf, spine in six compartments with delicate hatching, fleurons, roulettes and gilt fillet frames, red morocco title pieces and green morocco volume labels, triple gilt fillet to edges of covers, all edges red.It was in 1750 that Diderot made public his Prospectus, announcing the forthcoming publication of his Encyclopedia, the first volume already being prepared. The publication of his Prospectus caused quite a stir and the Encyclopedia was, all during its publication, plagued by censorship. It was first banned in 1752. A Royal Warrant declared that the Encyclopedia contained maxims that were "liable to undermine royal authority, promote erroneous thinking and the corruption of public morality, encourage irreligion and disbelief." The first two volumes were thus pulped. Diderot and d'Alembert did have the support of a number of literary figures of the day, including Voltaire and Malesherbes. But the attacks on this monumental undertaking did not stop there. In 1757, following Damien's attempt on Louis XV's life, the police redoubled their vigilance for all books liable to damage royal authority and religious dogma. In 1759, the Encyclopedia was ordered … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elwe Jan Barend ( 1777 - 1777 ) Amsterdam
Artist: Elwe Jan Barend ( - 1777 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1792. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 47 x 58; - description : map of Asia; - vita of the artist: Jan Barend Elwe ( 177 - 1815), was a Dutch publisher and book seller who reissued maps by De L Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sanson?s and Jaillot?s maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. This map has been published in 1792 in an Atlas which included 37 other maps of different countries.
