TETENS, Johann Nicolaus.
Leipzig: M. G. Weidmann's heirs and Reich, 1777. 2 volumes, octavo (200 x 116 mm). Contemporary sheep, spines ruled gilt in compartments, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Contemporary ownership inscription (Bibliothecae Collegii Episcus) partly erased on titles, ownership inscription H. R. Schmitzan on free endpaper. Spine ends slightly chipped and corners worn, covers a little soiled and abraded in places, very occasional spotting, the occasional side rule in pencil and in ink; a very good copy. Woodcut printer's device to titles. First edition of Tetens's "extended inquiry into the origin and structure of knowledge. He distinguished three faculties of the human mind: understanding, free will, and feeling of pleasures and pains. He stressed the independence of the third faculty from the first two. The three may be reducible to one, but if so, according to Tetens, we cannot know it Tetens discussed with great insight many other extremely complicated problems in metaphysics, ethics, the philosophy of education, and the philosophy of language. His Philosophische Versuche exerted a tremendous influence on Kant when he was writing the Critique of Pure Reason, and the many similarities between their doctrines are evident" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy VIII, 96). Tetens (1736–1807) was professor of philosophy and mathematics at the University of Kiel from 1776 to 1789. Ziegenfuss II, 687. [Attributes: First Edition]

1777. Opera completa in due volumi. Testo francese. Cm.20x12. Pg.XIV, 200, 16; VIII, 286. Sobrie legature in mz.pergamena con piatti marmorizzati. Tasselli con titoli in oro ai dorsi. Tagli spruzzati.

[Paine, Thomas]
Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Styner and Cist, 1777. pp.[9]-24. Dbd. Light stains on title and last leaf. Good. The very rare second part of the series by Paine which eventually stretched to thirteen numbers, written to boost the morale of American troops. Dated "Philadelphia, January 13, 1777" on page 24. Only the first five parts were separately printed as pamphlets, the rest being given directly to newspapers. This second part of THE AMERICAN CRISIS is directly addressed to Lord William Howe, the British commander in North America who though he had the upper hand militarily, had allowed Washington to evacuate New York, and had suffered recent defeats to the Americans at Trenton and Princeton. Paine mocks Howe and his demands on the American populace to cease their rebellion. Paine writes: "By what means, may I ask, do you expect to conquer America? If you could not effect it in the summer when our army was less than yours, nor in the winter when we had none, how are you to do it? In point of generalship you have been outwitted, and in point of fortitude outdone." The separate pamphlet editions of THE AMERICAN CRISIS, all of which are rare, were printed in various cities and towns. The older references, such as Evans and Howes, describe the Philadelphia printings of Parts I-III, but later findings by Edwin Wolf II and R.W.G. Vail have uncovered other early editions of this historical American political work. See especially Wolf's explanation of the various Philadelphia editions of the first three parts of THE AMERICAN CRISIS printed by Styner and Cist ("Evid … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frederick II, the Great, King of Prussia (1712-1786).
1777. Mostly 4to. 23 ff. 4 letters on halved sheets; mostly folded. Addendum. Highly interesting collection of personal letters from the last years of the King's life. In French, to Eléonore de Maupertuis, lady-in-waiting to Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia, Frederick's youngest sister. Eléonore was the daughter of the well-esteemed Prussian diplomat, scholar, and translator Kaspar Wilhelm von Borck(e). In 1744 she had married the French mathematician and astronomer Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, also a close confidant of Frederick's and head of the Prussian Academy of Science. After her husband's death in 1759 she concentrated on her office in the household of the Princess. - Since 1756 Anna Amalia of Prussia was Abbess of the Quedlinburg Convent but spent most of her time in Berlin. She is mainly remembered for her alleged affair with the Prussian officer and adventurer Friedrich von der Trenck. While the historicity of this anecdote is questionable, she was undoubtedly - and more importantly - one of the 18th century's few female composers of note. Her music collection ("Amalienbibliothek") contains many important prints and manuscripts, including the autograph of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerts. She spent her last years in seclusion at Berlin, always remaining in close contact with her brother, who visited her regularly. She survived Frederick's death on 17 August 1786 by just a few months, passing away on 30 March 1787 (cf. MGG I, 486f. and T. Debuch, Anna Amalia von Preußen, Berlin 2001). - There are but few sources for the life of Anna Amalia, many of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berne & Lausanne Chez La Société Typographique, 1777. Two vols. 8vo. Board edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles; a.e.g. The front board of volume II has been stabbed with a pin or needle several times, only one of which has reached the first few leaves of the book, with no noticeable effect. Bookplate of the Hon. W. Wyndham and the signature of Sophia Bernard on the titles. First published the same year as editions printed in Paris, Liege, and Frankfurt, this edition contains 254 and 310 numbered pages and ten engraved plates (five in each volume) avant la lettre. Jean-François Marmontel (1723-99) was a friend and disciple of Voltaire and early in his career the author of some forgotten tragedies, some serious comedies, comic operas, a light comedy, and some slight tales, two mediocre historical romances, Bélisaire, which was condemned by the Sorbonne on account of a chapter on toleration (the censure serving only to render that body ridiculous and to advertise the book), and, in 1777, Les Incas, in which Las Casas figures as defender of the Indians. Marmontel was, moreover, the principal contributor of the literary articles in the Encyclopédie. He was a member from 1763, and later, from 1783, perpetual secretary, of the Académie, succeeding d'Alembert. Les Incas has become a scarce title of late. See: Sabin 44652. Marquis de Lafayette
1777. He speaks well of the nephew of his patron in arranging his joining the American cause in 1777, and mentions numerous worthies, including Thomas Jefferson's grandson This letter speaks to Lafayette's strong ties to Harvard In August 1775, the Marquis de Lafayette was introduced to the Charles François, the Count de Broglie, commander of the French Army of the East. Through Broglie, Lafayette became associated with the Freemasons, who advocated freedom both in France and America. One of the most memorable events in the Marquis' life occurred when de Broglie invited the Duke of Gloucester to dinner and the Duke criticized the colonists. After hearing the reasons as to why the colonists where fighting for their freedom, the Marquis became convinced that he had to join in the effort. Lafayette wrote, "When I first learned of that quarrel, my heart was enlisted and I thought only of joining the colors." After this encounter, the Marquis convened with like-minded gentlemen in Paris to discuss the involvement of France in the American Revolution. One was Johann de Kalb, a Prussian-born soldier on de Broglie's staff. The men agreed to go to America as volunteers. Broglie at first rebuffed Lafayette, saying that his duty was to his family and France. But Lafayette persisted; Broglie relented and sent Lafayette with Kalb to see American envoy Silas Deane, who was seeking volunteers among the French officer corps. The young marquis was not the type of seasoned recruit that Deane sought, but Lafayette recalled, "I spoke more of my ardor in the cause than of my experience." W … [Click Below for Full Description]

At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America.
[Click Below for Full Description]

The Hague, Jacobus Scheltus, 1777. - 4to. 26 pp. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. Red modern cloth with giltstamped spine title. Renewal of the bilateral Treaty of Peace and Commerce of 1752 between the Netherlands and Morocco, then ruled by Sultan Abdallah IV (Moulay Abdallah ibn Moulay Ismail ibn Moulay Chérif ibn Moulay Ali of the Alaouite dynasty, styled "Keiser van de Ryken der Maroccen, Fez, Mequinez, Suz en Algarven" in Dutch). The renewal was signed at Salé, 29 June 1777, when the open-minded Mohammed ibn Abdallah was Sultan. In December same year, the Sultanate of Morocco became the first nation whose head of state publicly recognized the United States as an independent nation. - Since the late 16th century the Netherlands had been attempting to establish friendly relations with Islamic countries, such as the Ottoman Empire and Morocco, due to their common enmity with catholic Spain. The first "Treaty of Friendship and Free Commerce" between the two countries had been signed as early as 1610, offering "free access and friendly reception for their respective subjects with any need for safeguard or safe-conduct, no matter how they come to the others' territory". - Slight browning, but well-preserved.
