MANUSCRIPT. NUDE RACING.
[c.1824] 10pp ms. in different hands on both sides of 4to leaves, with additional blanks; sl. dusted. Sewn. The first three leaves are on unmarked paper with the first three pages seemingly in an earlier hand. The remaining leaves are watermarked 1824. Harland and T.T. Wilkinson, headed 'Foot Races by Nude Men': 'A correspondent in Notes and Queries says: "During the summer of 1824 I remember seeing at Whitworth in Lancashire two races, at different periods, of this description. On one occasion two men ran on Whitworth Moor, with only a small cloth or belt around the loins. On the other occasion the runners were six in number, stark naked, the distance being seven miles, or seven times round the moor. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of spectators, men and women, and it did not appear to shock them as being anything out of the ordinary course of things. It is with reference to this usage, no doubt, that the Lancas … [Click Below for Full Description]

"These towing tank experiments were preceded only by those of Benjamin Franklin. In the present work, Bossut reports on the experiments on the resistance of bodies in connection with inland navigation, which were conducted in 1775 by d'Alembert, Condorcet and himself at the request of the government. Using a towing tank constructed under Bossut's supervision, it was determined that the resistance increases as the relative area of the canal diminishes. MARMONTEL [JEAN-FRANÇOIS]
Berne & Lausanne Chez La Socit Typographique, 1777. Two vols. 8vo. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches), full contemporary crimson straight grain morocco, with a gilt chain border between two gilt fillets; smooth round spine divided into gilt panels, lavishly decorated. Board edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles; a.e.g. The front board of volume II has been stabbed with a pin or needle several times, only one of which has reached the first few leaves of the book, with no noticeable effect. Bookplate of the Hon. W. Wyndham and the signature of Sophia Bernard on the titles. First published the same year as editions printed in Paris, Liege, and Frankfurt, this edition contains 254 and 310 numbered pages and ten engraved plates (five in each volume) avant la lettre. Jean-Franois Marmontel (1723-99) was a friend and disciple of Voltaire and early in his career the author of some forgotten tragedies, some serious comedies, comic operas, a light comedy, and some slight tales, two mediocre historical romances, Blisaire, which was condemned by the Sorbonne on account of a chapter on toleration (the censure serving only to render that body ridiculous and to advertise the book), and, in 1777, Les Incas, in which Las Casas figures as defender of the Indians. Marmontel was, moreover, the principal contributor of the literary articles in the Encyclopdie. He was a member from 1763, and later, from 1783, perpetual secretary, of the Acadmie, succeeding d'Alembert. Les Incas has become a scarce title of late. See: Sabin 44652. Plain leather bound notebook. 8vo. Manuscript record of lands surveyed in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1777 (2 1/2 pp. of owners' names and acreage), and in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (35 pp. of owners' names and acreage) between 1785 and 1787. Approximately 18 names per page, each with holdings anywhere between 42 and 452 acres. A note at the head of the entry for Oct. 1, 1785 states the survey was done for John Nicholson & Co., and notes "Warr'ts Date July 1784, Nicholson & Company." The surveys listed for March 1787 were made out and returned by the surveyor John Cannon, others by Mr. Massey. These state issued land warrants awarded free land to Revolutionary War soldiers as an inducement to enlist or in payment for their service. The additional mention in this manuscript notebook of John Nicholson who was appointed Pennsylvania's Comptroller General in 1782, with broad powers to manage the financial affairs of the state, may indicate that the lists appearing in this notebook represent soldiers who were selling or transferring their assigned lands. Nicholson (1757-1800) was a well-known land speculator just after the Revolutionary War. H … [Click Below for Full Description]
