[THAMES HULKS]
London: London Magazine, 1777. A little browning, very good condition.. Engraved sheet, 125 x 190 mm. Published before the formal era of transportation commenced, this detailed engraving shows convicts labouring at Woolwich. The crew here depicted are rough-hewing planks, possibly for a Thames shipbuilder, with the hulk providing their accommodation moored in the background. The print was originally included in an issue of the London Magazine for 1777, and serves as a reminder of the role of convict labour in Britain before the establishment of New South Wales.

His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sanson?s and Jaillot?s maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. This map has been published in 1792 in an Atlas which included 37 other maps of different countries.

1777. Plate 47: This plate shows a neoclassical interior. Copperplate engraving on a verge type of hand-laid paper with hand colouring. Description: This rare antique print originates from 'Designs for Neoclassical Ornaments' by Michael Angelo Pergolesi. London 1777-1792: Published By the Author. Broadsheet folio with 67 etched plates by and after Pergolesi.Artists and Engravers: Michael Angelo Pergolesi was an Italian decorative artist from the 18th century who worked mainly in England. Biographical details are almost entirely lacking, but like Cipriani he was brought, or attracted, to England by Robert Adam after his famous continental tour. He worked so extensively for the Adams', and his designs are so closely typical of much upon which their reputation rests, that it is impossible to doubt his influence upon their style. His range, like theirs, was catholic. He designed furniture, mantelpieces, ceilings, chandeliers, doors and mural ornament with equal felicity, and as an artist in plaster work in low relief he was unapproached in his day. Condition: Good/excellent. General age-related toning and light staining from handling as visible on image. Some tears in the margins, not affecting image. A few light crinkles. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: DP-B7-07 The overall size is ca. 18.3 x 11.2 inch. The image size is ca. 17.3 x 10.2 inch. The overall size is ca. 46.5 x 28.5 cm. The image size is ca. 44 x 26 cm.
