(ZAGURI MARCO)
Stamperia del Seminario, 1777. Cm. 20,5, pp. (8) 317 (3). Testati, capilettera e finalini finemente incisi in rame.

SMITH, Adam.) HUME, David.
London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell; for J. Bew, 1777. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell; for J. Bew,, 1777. (Together with: PRATT, Samuel Jackson.) Supplement to the Life of David Hume, Esq. Containing genuine Anecdotes, and a circumstantial Account of his Death and Funeral. To which is added, a certified Copy of his last Will and Testament. 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (151 x 91 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, spine ruled gilt, red morocco label. Engraved frontispiece portrait to the first work. Corners worn, with loss of leather, some surface wear to covers, notably along the fore-edges, offset from the frontispiece onto the title, as usual; some light spotting and toning; still very good copies. First edition, second issue (with the misprint "himself" for "myself", line 3, p. 29), of the most endearing of autobiographies, bound with a related contemporary work. Hume was aware that, owing to his views on religious questions, the manner of his death would be a matter of public curiosity. So when, in My Own Life, he set out to describe his feelings as he approached his end, he was as much writing a manifesto for his philosophy as a piece of autobiography. It is generally agreed that the account is an authentic self-portrait of one whom his friend Adam Smith, whose letter to the publisher William Strahan recounting Hume's last days is printed at the end of the Life, described as approaching "as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human fraility will admit". SAVIGNY, Marie Jules-César Lelorgue de.
- Nissen, IVB 819; Ronsil 2718; Wood, p. 552. First and only edition of a natural and mythological history of the ibis by Marie Jules-César Lelorgue de Savigny (1777-1851). It contains six engravings after drawings by two major natural history illustrators: Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) and Jacques Barraband (1768-1809). The engravings show the black and the white ibis, close-ups from the beak and leg and some Egyptian illustrations. Barraband is well known for his beautiful ornithological illustrations for Levaillant's works on parrots and birds of paradise. Joseph II, Kaiser Österreich. - [Fischer, Johann Jakob]:
Ulm, bey August Lebrecht Stettin / Joh. [Click Below for Full Description]

He one of the first members of the exclusive literary debating society, The Poker Club (1762-1784), established by Allan Ramsay which also had Hume, Smith, Kames, Home, Blair, and Carlyle as members. Robertson presented several papers to the society. He took a great interest in the development of 'proper' English and had formed a club, while at University, to study elocution in preparation for various debates. His clear literary style lead him to begin translating the Meditationsof Marcus Aurelius and he reached Book 8 before putting it aside to concentrate on the ministry. He returned to literary pursuits by writing the History of Scotland (1759). This was a work that brought him to the notice of the writers of the day, and set the standard of historical works for the next hundred years. This was followed by equally important works covering America and India; in fact he was the first to attempt a systematic world history.Robertson's modern approach to history led to one his gr … [Click Below for Full Description]
