SIMES, Thomas.
London: Printed for the author,, 1777. A RESPONSE TO "THE REBELLIOUS CONDUCT OF THE AMERICANS" Octavo (208 x 131 mm). Contemporary marbled calf. Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 17 plates (a total of 20 plans and diagrams). Joints partially split but sound, label absent, small portion of fabric missing from foot of spine, pale old dampstaining in margins of a few gatherings. An honest copy with an appealing provenance and with the medial blank [T8], the single advertisement leaf before the plates (for Lochee's A Sytem of Mathematics) and the 14pp. subscribers list. First edition. A very timely publication, as Simes stresses in his secondary dedication "To the Officers of the Army": "From the rebellious conduct of the Americans it appears to me that there is a great necessity of publishing something of this kind, for the instruction of the young and unexperienced [sic] officer". In his study of the 18th-century training texts of the British Army, Fit for Service, J. A. Houlding is amusingly dismissive of Simes's merits as an author and compiler. However, he concedes that Simes's publications did fill a need in the British Army at the time, as is demonstrated by the lengthy and impressive subscribers list appended to the present volume, and that "they served their purpose in providing young officers with a fairly complete catalogue of their duties." Even Colonel Edward Harvey, adjutant-general, though unimpressed, acknowledged the troubles Simes had put himself to in "collecting Several Regulations & Forms of Returns, etc. & in publishing them together", and he knew t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Mexico; Catholic Church].
1777. Mexico. Lic. D. Joseph de Jauregui. Folio, (305 x 215 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Uncut, some edges chipped but in no case affecting text, overall very god.- First edition apparently, a beautiful Mexican impression; it is illustrated with a portrait of the Virgin of Balvanera by Salsedo –one of the earliest iconographic representations of the Virgin of Valvanera printed in Mexico- flanked by two putti sitting on an Eagle who in turn is stepping on a snake –the arms of Mexico, making reference of the founding of Mexico City by the Aztecs- on the title page, all surrounded by a woodcut frame. The text concerns the indulgences granted –and in which cases they are granted- by His Holiness Clement XIII (1758-69). The rarity appears to be considerable, only one copy recorded in OCLC, at the University of Dayton Library. Palau; 55602.

Chatterton, Thomas]
T. Payne, London, 1777. 8vo, xxvii, [1], 307pp; engraved plate inserted facing p. 288; nineteenth century three-quarter crushed morocco gilt, t.e.g; custom slipcase. Second state, with the "Advertisement" leaf in front cancelled. Chatterton committed suicide before his eighteenth birthday, having published but one of these poems, ostensibly by the fifteenth century poet of his own invention. This edition, edited by the Chaucer scholar Thomas Tyrwhitt, asserted the poems' authenticity, but upon reconsideration -- and disputes from leading contemporary poets -- his second edition in 1778 acknowledged Chatterton's authorship. A handsome copy of a work that left a deep impression on the English Romantic poets. Hayward 188. Old mend to an edge tear t o the margin of G4; bookplate (Thomas Pryce); early ownership signature on title page; scattered spots; a nice, clean copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

VOLTA Alessandro
Cfr. Duveen, p. 606 - Poggendorff,II,1231 - Riccardi “Sulle opere di A. Volta”, p. 22 (11): “Raro libretto”. Piccolissimi fori di tarlo su alc. cc. al marg. interno bianco; cucitura interna leggerm. allentata, altrim. fresco esemplare ben conservato.
