Prestel, Maria Katharina (geb.

GREGORY, Henry
London: Henry Gregory, 1777. unbound. very good. Sea chart. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 20.5 x 33 inches, sheet measures 22.5 x 35.75 inches. Shows some light foxing. In very good condition. Striking sea chart based on a VOC manuscript map, fathoms, depths rocks and safe soundings are noted. Batavia was the name of the capital city of the Dutch East Indies that corresponds to the present day Central Jakarta. Henry Gregory (1744-1782) was a British mathematical and optical instrument maker. One of his azimuth compasses accompanied James Cook on his second voyage to the Pacific (1772-1775). The chart appeared as one of 46 in "A New Directory for the East Indies". This directory was designed for professional rather than popular use and valued in commercial as well as military navigation. As many of these maps were destroyed by the wear and tear of sea travel, this chart is an exceptional document of this active region, both yesterday and today.

?the separation of the Jewish Tribes, after the death of Solomon, accounted for, and applied to the present day, in a sermon preached before Genral Court, on Friday, July the 4th, 1777. Being the anniversary of the declaration of Independency. First edition. 8vo. Sewn as issued, some rodent damage to the lower margin not affecting the text. 37pp. Boston, Gill, Gordon was dismissed as pastor after his objection to Article 5 of the constitution. He left America and settled in England where he wrote a history of the United States. According to Sabin this is perhaps the earliest commemorative oration celebrating the Declaration of Independence. ?when we look back. and recollect that we were without an army, without money, and without ammunition, we are amazed that instead of being aglled to the bone with the yoke of slavery, we are keeping the anniversary of our independency? SMITH, Adam.) HUME, David.
London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell; for J. Bew, 1777. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell; for J. Bew,, 1777. (Together with: PRATT, Samuel Jackson.) Supplement to the Life of David Hume, Esq. Containing genuine Anecdotes, and a circumstantial Account of his Death and Funeral. To which is added, a certified Copy of his last Will and Testament. 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (151 × 91 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, spine ruled gilt, red morocco label. Engraved frontispiece portrait to the first work. Corners worn, with loss of leather, some surface wear to covers, notably along the fore-edges, offset from the frontispiece onto the title, as usual; some light spotting and toning; still very good copies. First edition, second issue (with the misprint "himself" for "myself", line 3, p. 29), of the most endearing of autobiographies, bound with a related contemporary work. Hume was aware that, owing to his views on religious questions, the manner of his death would be a matter of public curiosity. So when, in My Own Life, he set out to describe his feelings as he approached his end, he was as much writing a manifesto for his philosophy as a piece of autobiography. It is generally agreed that the account is an authentic self-portrait of one whom his friend Adam Smith, whose letter to the publisher William Strahan recounting Hume's last days is printed at the end of the Life, described as approaching "as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human fraility will admit". (Sir Walter Raleigh; Guy Fawkes) Hargrave, Francis; Thomas Salmon; Sollom Emlyn
London: Printed by T. Wright ..., and sold by G. Kearsly, 1777. Fourth edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Trials of pirate Captain Kidd, and New York colonial politician Nicholas Bayard, complete in itself. Captain William Kidd (c.1654 - 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note that relegating him to the role of pirate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp287-339). In 1910 at the British Public Records archives, the French passes were found that Captain Kidd claimed would prove his innocence. The second trial of note included here is that of Colonel Nicholas Bayard, p419-440. Bayard, the 16th mayor of New York City, was accused in 1702 of high treason before Chief Justice William Atwood, on the basis of a remonstrance signed by him and others, considered to be libelous. Bayard was sentenced to death, but after the death of the New York governor and the corrupt Chief Justice, the proceedings were annulled, and Bayard's property and name were cleared.&# … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARBURI, Marin.
Paris: Nyon and Stoupe, 1777. Paris: Nyon and Stoupe,, 1777. The invention of ball bearings, making possible one of the great engineering feats of the 18th century Folio (423 x 280 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, red edges. With 12 folding engraved plates, most double-page, by Sellier and d'Elvaux after Blarenberg. Armorial bookplate of Henry Tronchin. Skilful and unobtrusive repairs to joints and tips, final two plates with a couple of very light red paint marks, occasional variable light browning and offsetting, overall a pleasing copy of this handsome folio. First edition of this account of this remarkable feat of engineering. Charged with designing the bronze equestrian statue of the Russian emperor Peter the Great that remains a celebrated landmark of St Petersburg, the French sculptor Etienne Falconet decided that the traditional pedestal for equestrian statues would be too mundane. Only a massive rock would suffice. Eventually an enormous piece of granite was located in a marsh near the Gulf of Finland. The Thunder Stone, as it was dubbed, was estimated to be 40 feet long, 25 feet side, and 21 feet tall, and weighed some 1,800 tons: about 1,300 tons more than any of the obelisks moved by the ancient Egyptians or Romans. Most engineers declared its removal impossible, but Catherine the Great turned to Carburi, a Greek of dubious moral reputation who had banished himself from his native island of Cephalonia, and had come to Russia where he found favour with the empress. To move the giant rock, Carburi … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIUSEPPE MARELLI, 1777. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Paine, Thomas]
[Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Styner and Cist, 1777. First edition, second state. pp. [2], 27-56. 1 vols. 8vo. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, bound in antique style, spine gilt lettered. Title-page trimmed, slightly repaired at fore-edge. Light tanning and dampstaining. About very good. First edition, second state. pp. [2], 27-56. 1 vols. 8vo. The very rare third part of the series by Paine, written to boost the morale of American troops. The pamphlet is dated "Philadelphia, April 19, 1777" at the end of the text. The verso of the title-page prints proclamations by Gen. George Washington dated April 6 and 8, 1777, offering pardons to all army deserters who rejoin their corps before May 15, 1777. Paine thus wrote the pamphlet in mid-April 1777. In the text Paine predicts that Philadelphia will be a target of the British armies, as indeed it was that summer. "Britain, like a gamester nearly ruined, hath now put all her losses into one bet, and is playing a desperate game for the total. If she wins, she wins from ME my life; she wins the continent as the forfeited property of rebels; the right of taxing those that are left as reduced subjects; and the power of binding them as slaves." Paine goes on to argue that complete independence is the only path forward. The separate pamphlet editions of THE AMERICAN CRISIS, all of which are rare, were printed in various cities and towns, and all seem to be distinguished by having caption titles only. The older references, such as Evans and Howes, describe the Philadelphia printings of P … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peru. Viceroy (1776-1780: Guirior).
1777. When the second Spanish-Portuguese War broke out in 1776, the Spanish king knew that the strength of the navy and merchant fleet would be essential for securing a victory. To that end, the crown has here instructed Viceroy Guiror to create a register of all sailors, both merchant and crown, living in the ports and coastal towns of the viceroyalty, so as to have them in ready reserve. Guiror here promulgates the very detailed instructions for the accomplishment of that list. He first grants amnesty to all deserters provided they present themselves within six months for active duty/work and he goes on in the 72 articles of this statute to list those exempted, the age requirements to be maintained, the jobs covered by the register, the reserve's administrative structure, the hierarchical tree of command, etc., as well as specifying that all will enjoy the privileges and exemptions that the crown long ago extended to the navy and merchant marine. Not found via NUC or WorldCat, but we know of a copy in backlog processing at the John Carter Brown Library.

MARMONTEL, Jean-François (1723-99]
Lacombe Paris 1777 First Edition. Octavo Hardcover Two volumes, 19.5 cm, full straight-grained navy blue morocco, all page edges gilt, bound-in ribbon markers, pink endpapers. pp [iii]-xii, (339, errata), [3]; (2), 380, (4, approbation and privilege), [2]. Engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates by de Launay, Duclos, de Ghendt, Helman, Leveau, Née and Simonet after Jean Michel Moreau Le Jeune (complete). Bindings have light wear to the edges and corners; mild foxing early and late; light toning to several plates; inner hinges cracked but firm; 7 cm tear to lower inner corner of front free endpaper of volume II neatly repaired; VG+ otherwise, the contents quite clean and fresh. Sabin 44652; Cohen-De Ricci 690. Marmontel's account of the fall of the Inca Empire, sympathetic to the Indians if somewhat melodramatic, nicely illustrated. Because a chapter calling for religious tolerance in his book BÉLISAIRE earned him the censure of the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris, in LES INCAS he retaliated by attributing the cruelty of the Spanish to their religious zeal. Significant as an Enlightenment era plea for tolerance, the work proved popular and went through numerous editions in several languages. Jean-François Marmontel was a French historian, writer, librettist, prominent member of the Encyclopédistes, friend of Voltaire, and from 1783, perpetual secretary of the Académie. Front paste-down with the engraved armorial bookplate of Ross Ambler Curran, early twentieth-century California society figure and bibliophile.

The paper contains the design of a torsion suspension declination compass and the demonstration that the forces of torsion is proportional to the angle of twist. Coulomb received the prize awarded by the Academy for this paper drafted by the Academy in 1777 (he shared the prize with Van Swinden). - "The importance of this memoir for Coulomb's career is that it CONTAINED ELEMENTS OF ALL HIS MAJOR PHYSICAL STUDIES: the quantitative study of magnetism, torsion and the torsion balance, friction and fluid resistance, and the germ of his theories of elasticity and magnetism."(DSB)."Coulomb's first writings on torsion were presented in his Academy prize-winning memoir of 1777, "Recherches sur la meilleure maniere de fabriquer les aiguilles aimantées."......... his simple, elegant solution to the problem of torsion in cylinders and his use of the torsion balance in physical applications were important to numerous physicists in succeeding years.

California as an island. The Island of California refers to a long-held Spanish misconception, dating from the 16th century, that California was not part of mainland North America but rather a large island separated from the continent by a strait now known as the Gulf of California. One of the most famous cartographic errors in history, it was propagated on many maps during the 17th and 18th centuries, despite contradictory evidence from various explorers. The legend was initially infused with the idea that California was a terrestrial paradise, like the Garden of Eden or Atlantis. Australia not completely depicted as the complete coast was not charted at that time. - vita of the artist: Jan Barend Elwe ( 177 - 1815), was a Dutch publisher and book seller who reissued maps by De L Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sanson?s and Jaillot?s maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. Sterne, Laurence
T. Becket, London, 1777. Finely bound set of Sterne's Tristram Shandy. Octavo, 6 volumes, bound in contemporary full polished brown calf, black morocco spine labels, smooth spines with gilt rules and decorations, marbled endpapers. Frontispiece in volume one after Hogarth. In near fine condition. Tristram Shandy is considered by many the first modern novel and the father of stream of consciousness writing. It is perhaps the most literal example of a novel available. Sterne was an Anglican Vicar who was influenced by Pope, Locke, Swift and Cervantes. His narrative devices and styles have indelibly influenced many modern and postmodern authors: James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Milan Kundera, Salmon Rushdie among others.
