Sheridan, Richard Brinsley]
s.n., Dublin 1777 - Dublin piracy. Lacking half-title. [iv], 39 [i.e. 40] pp. (pp. 38, 39 and 40 misnumbered 32, 38 and 39 respectively). 12mo. Pirated Dublin edition of Sheridan's popular burlesque opera The Duenna, with the title and character names changed. An early owner has supplied the correct names in pencil on the dramatis personæ page (i.e. "Isaac" for Enoch Issachar, "Antonio" for Octavio). The text was taken down by shorthand during a Dublin performance and differs substantially from the authorized London edition of 1794. The manager of the Crow-Street theater was unsuccessfully prosecuted for his involvement in staging this unauthorized version. ESTC notes two variant mispaginations; this copy with the final three pages mispaginated. ESTC T138772; Williams, p. 215 Disbound. Correct character names supplied in pencil on dramatis personæ page ("Isaac" for Enoch Issachar, etc). In gray card folder Lacking half-title. 1777. Plate 47: This plate shows a neoclassical interior. Copperplate engraving on a verge type of hand-laid paper with hand colouring. Description: This rare antique print originates from 'Designs for Neoclassical Ornaments' by Michael Angelo Pergolesi. London 1777-1792: Published By the Author. Broadsheet folio with 67 etched plates by and after Pergolesi.Artists and Engravers: Michael Angelo Pergolesi was an Italian decorative artist from the 18th century who worked mainly in England. Biographical details are almost entirely lacking, but like Cipriani he was brought, or attracted, to England by Robert Adam after his famous continental tour. He worked so extensively for the Adams', and his designs are so closely typical of much upon which their reputation rests, that it is impossible to doubt his influence upon their style. His range, like theirs, was catholic. He designed furniture, mantelpieces, ceilings, chandeliers, doors and mural ornament with equal felicity, and as an artist in plaster work in low relief he was unapproached in his day. Condition: Good/excellent. General age-related toning and light staining from handling as visible on image. Some tears in the margins, not affecting image. A few light crinkles. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: DP-B7-07 The overall size is ca. 18.3 x 11.2 inch. The image size is ca. 17.3 x 10.2 inch. The overall size is ca. 46.5 x 28.5 cm. The image size is ca. 44 x 26 cm.

Sometime (early 20th century?) rebacked in lighter brown leather, red morocco label, front hinge cracking a bit. Armorial bookplate of Walter Henry James to front pastedown, ownership inscription of H. Ellison, alumnus of Harrow School (dated July 1797) to initial blank. MANUSCRIPT. NUDE RACING.
[c.1824] 10pp ms. in different hands on both sides of 4to leaves, with additional blanks; sl. dusted. Sewn. The first three leaves are on unmarked paper with the first three pages seemingly in an earlier hand. The remaining leaves are watermarked 1824. A fascinating document recording the rather neglected sport of nude racing in the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Although 'nude' or 'naked' is not evident in ink, the record for race number five indicates the bare nature of the racing. Held on December 24th (one may have presumed that this was a summer sport), and raced over 10 miles at Gisburn, Yorkshire, the entry notes that 'the Shephard did not accompany Stump above 3 miles before he gave up. When Stump put on his clothes and ran the remainder of the race at his own ease'. In Bill Smith's book Studmarks on the Summits, 1985, he quotes the following passage in Lancashire Legends, by J. Harland and T.T. Wilkinson, headed 'Foot Races by Nude Men': 'A correspondent in Notes and Queries says: "During the summer of 1824 I remember seeing at Whitworth in Lancashire two races, at different periods, of this description. On one occasion two men ran on Whitworth Moor, with only a small cloth or belt around the loins. On the other occasion the runners were six in number, stark naked, the distance being seven miles, or seven times round the moor. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of spectators, men and women, and it did not appear to shock them as being anything out of the ordinary course of things.
