Francesco & Paolo SANTINI (Attivi a Venezia seconda metà del XVIII secolo)
1777. "Rara mappa regionale del territorio di Brescia e dintorni. "Scarce regional map of the Territory of Brescia and environs. Unlike many of the maps in Santini's atlas, this regional map of Italy is not drawn from De Vaugondy and is based upon Italian sources. Francesco & Paolo SANTINI (Attivi a Venezia seconda metà del XVIII secolo)
Fine example of the first state Santini's 6-sheet map of the Northern Part of the Ottoman Empire, centered on the Black Sea, published in Venice in 1779. The map was late reprinted by Giovanni Antonio Remondini. Santini's map is based upon Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni's map of 1774. Rizzi-Zannoni's 3 sheet map of the Northern Ottoman Empire shows the Empire at the tail end of its centuries of control of Southeastern Europe. The map extends north and east to the Caspian Sea and Cossack Regions, and west to Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria, providing a fantastic geographical and topographical depiction of the region. Includes a fine decorative cartouche. The 6 sheet map was bound into the Atlas Universel. While there is some overlapping geography on the horizontal sheets, the sheets can be cut and joined to form a 6-sheet map approximately 60 inches wide and 34 inches tall. Copperplate with original outline colour, 6 sheet map, unjoined, with full margins, light waterstain in the lower white margins, otherwise very good condition.

[Guibert, J A H , Comte de]
Berlin, 1777. First Edition.. full contemporary calf.. Very good.. 8vo. Guibert's laudatory study of Frederick the Great and his army. A book to be seen in conjunction with the author's profound influence on the organization and conduct of war in Europe in succeeding generations. Guibert's work commences with the doctrinal ferment that engulfed the French army following the Seven Years War. He was the author of the famous Essai general de tactique. Though establishing the 'science of war' the book seeks a government structure that is much like that of the enlightened absolutist Frederick the Great. Hence the book offered here with its extensive commentary on the army and organization of Prussia is an important adjunct contemporary to the Essai. Guibert was also a celebrity of the day; at his death Mme. de Stael wrote a eulogy for him; Voltaire addressed his poem Le Tactique to him, and Mlle de Lespinasse was the author of hundreds of love letters to him. See Gat, Origins ..., for an extensive commentary on the author.

BOSSU, Jean Bernard:
(). BOSSU, Jean Bernard. Nouveaux Voyages Dans L'Amerique Septentrionale...Amsterdam [i.e. Paris]. 1777. xvi,392pp. plus 4 plates (1 folding) including frontis. Half title. Contemporary half gilt calf and boards, vellum corners. Very minor edge rubbing, internally crisp and clean. A near fine copy. In a half morocco case. Graff 362. Field 158. Monaghan 267. Streeter Sale 1520. Howes B-627, "aa." Hubach, p.13. ALVIN 6470. Bossu, an officer in the French army, first came to Louisiana in the 1750's. He travelled mainly in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, although he ascended the Mississippi as far as the French settlements in Illinois. His first book, not to be confused with this one (as Clark does), covers his first two trips to Louisiana and was issued in 1768. It caused the author a good deal of trouble with the authorities and he was imprisoned briefly; however, the book was a great success and was widely reprinted. The present work, with a slightly different title, is in fact an entirely new book, and describes Bossu's third trip to Louisiana, in 1771-72. His previous trouble with the government probably accounts for the false imprint of Amsterdam, and possibly for the rarity of the book in general. Both Rich and Field remark that this is a "much scarcer work" than Bossu's more famous volume, a notion which is born out by our experience.

[THAMES HULKS]
London: London Magazine, 1777. A little browning, very good condition.. Engraved sheet, 125 x 190 mm. Published before the formal era of transportation commenced, this detailed engraving shows convicts labouring at Woolwich. The crew here depicted are rough-hewing planks, possibly for a Thames shipbuilder, with the hulk providing their accommodation moored in the background. The print was originally included in an issue of the London Magazine for 1777, and serves as a reminder of the role of convict labour in Britain before the establishment of New South Wales.
