Holtzendorff, (Georg Ernst Von)
1777. (MILITARY MANUAL-EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FRENCH) HOLTZENDORFF, (Georg Ernst von). ELEMENS DE TACTIQUE, DEMONIRES GEOMETRIQUEMENT; OUVRAGE ALLEMAND; ...Two volumes bound in one. Paris: chez Nyon, 1777. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, leather label. (ii), xvi, 334, (1) pages, 10 folding plates; (ii), 165, (3) pages, 7 folding plates. First edition. Scarce French military tactical manual with only six copies in the U.S. -Library of Congress, Columbia University, New York Public Library, Universities of Michigan and Pittsburg, and Society of the Cincinnati. Georg Ernst von Holtzendorff was a Prussian officer who was elevated in 1767 to the hereditary Prussian aristocracy for his services. In 1770 he received the command of the 1st artillery regiment as supreme lieutenant. He was promoted in 1779 by King Frederick II, the Great, as General-Major, Chief and General Engineer of the entire artillery and their magazines. He was also a member of the artillery school (Ecole d'Artillerie). It does include four pages of subscribers, primarily French offices. While we have not identified any contemporary American, British or French military who owned this book, the mid-war date of the book suggests that it would most likely to be in the hands of French officers, for we know that Rochambeau did own Holtzebdorff's other book, Campagne do Roi du Prusse, (1784). One corner of cover bumped with rubbing to hinges and tips of binding, else an excellent copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario)
(ENGRAVED CONCERT TICKET) (PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario). FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. PIOZZI, WILL BE A GRAND CONCERT OF VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. (London): n.d., (circa 1777 to 1780). Etched and engraved ticket in red on heavy stock (3 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches). A rare eighteenth century engraved ticket not located anywhere else. Gabriel Mario Piozzi (1740-1809), Italian singer and composer, was the music and singing teacher of the daughter of Dr. Johnson's close friend, Mrs. Hester Thrale. To the consternation of Dr. Johnson, Fanny Burney, and other society friends, Piozzi, an Italian Catholic, became the second husband of Mrs. Thrale in 1784. The ticket was engraved by C. Barnes, Coventry Street, London, engraver of British and American bookplates. The date of this ticket has two possibilities. First, it could possibly be a ticket for the benefit for Mr. Piozzi held on April 18, 1777, as advertised in the Public Advertiser, #243, March, 1777. Piozzi advertised tickets available from himself at half a guinea each. Secondly, and more intriguingly, it is possible this was the benefit given for him by Mrs. Thrale in 1780. Mrs. Thrale met Piozzi at a party at Dr. Burney's in 1777. On August 8 she wrote in her Thraliana, "Lady Shelley & I shall get him a pretty Benefit, & he will have ten guineas from me besides, for teaching Hester to sing; his journey to Brighton will be a lucky one, he has lost some of his voice by relaxation-the Sea will restore it." Mrs. Thrale and Piozzi were married July 23, 1784.

Oldendorp, Christian George Andreas
Barby, Switzerland, 1777. Two volumes bound in one. [16],444,[4],[4],447-1068,[46]pp. plus three folding maps, four folding plates, and a folding chart. Thick octavo. Modern calf, gilt spine. Hinges cracked, front board separating. Internally pristine. Very good plus. Oldendorp was a minister in the Moravian Church in Europe who was sent to the Danish West Indies to collect data for a history of the mission there. Over a period of seventeen months on St. Croix, he compiled a vast amount of information about local customs through his extensive interviewing of resident Blacks from thirty different tribes. In addition, Oldendorp made notes relating to the natural resources of the island. The second part of the book contains the history of the mission. "With the help of an editor, Johann Jacob Bossart, who arranged the copious materials in a meaningful way, Oldendorp's German-language report became a cornerstone of eighteenth- century West Indian scholarship. Two hundred years later, two American scholars translated Oldendorp's work into English as A CARIBBEAN MISSION. Interest in the book has never waned" - Robert Graff. The lovely engraved views are among the first made of these islands, showing the missions on St. Thomas and St. John, and two views on St. Croix. Not in the Beinecke Lesser Antilles Collection at Hamilton College, and in few American collections. SABIN 57152. ont> T Payne: London. Ont> T Payne: London, 1777 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The second edition of this controversial work of 'lost' poetry, originally attributed to Thomas Rowley. With a page of publisher's advertisements. The second edition. Published the same year as the first edition. A scarce edition. Collated complete. Thomas Chatterton was an English poet who tragically killed himself at just seventeen. His work was extremely advanced in style, to such an extent that he was able to pass off his work as that of an imaginary fifteen century poet named Thomas Rowley. Chatterton claimed that he had discovered the works at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol, close to where he grew up. 'Poems Supposed To Have Been Written At Bristol' was published posthumously, after editing by Chaucerian scholar Thomas Trywhitt who believed the works to be genuine. The works caused much controversy with much scholarly debate surrounding their authenticity. It took almost thirty years and much scholarly analysis before it was in fact confirmed the works were solely created by Chatterton. The work is an early example of a controversial and fascinating piece of eighteenth century literary debate. Condition: Rebacked with speckled calf boards. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the extremities and boards. Marks to the boards. Hinges have been professionally reinforced. Ink inscription dated 1831 to front free endpaper and another dated 1963 to front pastedown. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and marginal … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Elwe Jan Barend ( - 1777 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1792. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 47 x 67,5; - description : Very decorative celestical chart of the projection of the night sky showing all the heavenly bodies and with panels of astrological notations below. The Chameleon, the Phoenix, the Toucan, Grus (the crane), Indus (Indian warrior with spear), Hydrus, Pavo, Paradisea, Triangulum, Musca (the fly), Volans (a flying fish) and Dorado (the goldfish). All figures are mirror imaged, because the chart is drawn as if looking towards the Earth from beyond the stars, rather than drawn from the Earth looking out. Elwe's re-issue of a great chart first published by Johannes van Keulen in 1709 and then by Ottens in 1750. One of the best Dutch celestial charts, that rolls out the entire night sky in a modified Mercator style projection.; - vita of the artist: Jan Barend Elwe ( 177 - 1815), was a Dutch publisher and book seller who reissued maps by De L¥Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sansonís and Jaillotís maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. This map has been published in 1792 in an Atlas which included 37 other maps of different countries.

Renewal of the bilateral Treaty of Peace and Commerce of 1752 between the Netherlands and Morocco, then ruled by Sultan Abdallah IV (Moulay Abdallah ibn Moulay Ismail ibn Moulay Chérif ibn Moulay Ali of the Alaouite dynasty, styled "Keiser van de Ryken der Maroccen, Fez, Mequinez, Suz en Algarven" in Dutch). The renewal was signed at Salé, 29 June 1777, when the open-minded Mohammed ibn Abdallah was Sultan. In December same year, the Sultanate of Morocco became the first nation whose head of state publicly recognized the United States as an independent nation. - Since the late 16th century the Netherlands had been attempting to establish friendly relations with Islamic countries, such as the Ottoman Empire and Morocco, due to their common enmity with catholic Spain. The first "Treaty of Friendship and Free Commerce" between the two countries had been signed as early as 1610, offering "free access and friendly reception for their respective subjects with any need for safeguard or safe-conduct, no matter how they come to the others' territory". - Slight browning, but well-preserved.

SIMES, Thomas.
London: Printed for the author, 1777. Octavo (208 x 128 mm). Contemporary calf, red morocco label to the spine. A little rubbed at the extremities, corners worn, upper joint slightly cracked at the head, small tear and repair to leather on the upper board, mild offsetting from the frontispiece, very light toning else, a very good copy in unrestored contemporary condition. Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 17 similar plates with a total of 20 plans and diagrams, ad leaf for Lochee's System of Military Mathematics bound before the plates, and 14-page subscribers list after the plates. Attractive armorial bookplate of Major John Taubman, speaker of the House of Keys, the Manx Parliament, from 1799 until his death in 1822. He raised the Douglas Volunteers, and was their Major Commandant; he was also a Major in the Isle of Man Volunteers. Second edition, the same year as the first, the dedication dated just nine days after the first (1 October, rather than 22 September). A very timely publication, as Simes stresses in his secondary dedication "To the Officers of the Army": "From the rebellious conduct of the Americans it appears to me that there is a great necessity of publishing something of this kind, for the instruction of the young and unexperienced [sic] officer". In his study of the 18th-century training texts of the British Army, Fit for Service, Houlding is dismissive of Simes's merits as an author and compiler. However, he concedes that Simes's publications did fill a need in the British Army at the time, as is demonstrated by the lengthy and impressive subscriber … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CAILLEAU (A. Ch.)]
¶ Barbier IV.973.

ROUBO André-Jacob, dit Roubo le fils;
