Elwe Jan Barend (1777 - 1777) Amsterdam
Artist: Elwe Jan Barend ( - 1777) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1792. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Double fold lower right; - size (in cm): 46 x 61; - description: Decorative double hemishere map, surrounded by figurative representations of the continents, Asia, Europe, America and Africa. California as an island. The Island of California refers to a long-held Spanish misconception, dating from the 16th century, that California was not part of mainland North America but rather a large island separated from the continent by a strait now known as the Gulf of California. One of the most famous cartographic errors in history, it was propagated on many maps during the 17th and 18th centuries, despite contradictory evidence from various explorers. The legend was initially infused with the idea that California was a terrestrial paradise, like the Garden of Eden or Atlantis. Australia not completely depicted as the complete coast was not charted at that time. - vita of the artist: Jan Barend Elwe ( 177 - 1815), was a Dutch publisher and book seller who reissued maps by De L Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sanson?s and Jaillot?s maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. This map has been published in 1792 in an Atla … [Click Below for Full Description]

FREDERIC II
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Bw 1, 440, Lichtenberg an Johann Andreas Schernhagen, 5. Februar 1778). Mai 1777. "Einige der schönsten [Figuren] hat Hr. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1777. 2 volumes, 4to. (11 1/8 x 8 3/4 inches). Engraved portrait of Cook by J. Basire after Wm. Hodges, 63 engraved plates, maps and charts, 1 folding letterpress table. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked. Fourth edition of Cook's second voyage describing his attempt to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search for a southern continent. "Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century" (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135). "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, described in the present work, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents ... the men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, and a number of smaller islands. I/ xxxvi-434-[2] pp., 2 pl. grav. dép.; II/ 2 ff., lxii-297 pp., 1 pl. grav. dép.; III/ 2 ff., iv-352 pp., 2 ff., 5 pl. grav. dép.; IV/ lii-404 pp., 2 pl. grav. dép.; V/ 2 ff., 404 pp., 1 pl. grav. dép. GIN, P.L.C.)
A Genève, 1777. (4), (2, Avis au Lecteur, blank), vii, (1, blank), 316, (4, errata) pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, label with gilt lettering, marbled edges. INED 2037 (later edition); not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; not in Mattioli; Mornet, Les origines intellectuelles de la Révolution, pp. 217-8. Rare first edition of this work which is primarily a defence of monarchic government against the theories of Montesquieu and Mably, notable for a variety of observations on economic issues. Gin identifies the products of agriculture and manufacture as the basic forms of wealth, and condemns import on the grounds that they lead to a diminution in the population. - Some annotations concerning author and book on verso front free blank. A very nice copy with good margins, and an interesting copy: after the title-page there is a "Avis au Lecteur", reading: "Ce livre n'ayant pas ete imprime sous les yeux de l'Auteur, il s'y est glissé plusieurs fautes typographiques. Both this "avis" and the errata … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cat. Einaudi n. 3997.

Dublin: James Williams, 1777. First Edition.. full 18th cent. calf; rebacked.. A very good copy; some occ. dustiness.. 12mo. Engraved title page. [6], (1)2 - 244 pp. An unusual descriptive low life ramble set out in a series of numbered descriptions and vignettes of life (characters appear in some of the vignettes). There is hardly a topic the author does not consider and ridicule. At times this appears a jest book. There is no London edition (as the Dublin imprint may lead one to suspect) and the ESTC and NUC cite only this printing. The book is well done and quite funny in parts. Greenough p. 224.
