NEWTON, Isaac.
FIRST EDITION of the second translation into English of the Principia, although only the first volume was published. Thorp's translation, "though based on Motte's edition of 1729, is considered by Cohen (Newton, 1969, p. iv) to be 'notably improved and amended'. Further, he declared, for anyone wishing to follow Newton's reasoning and 'to comprehend this great treatise on its own terms, there is no better work...available in English'." (Gjertsen, The Newton Handbook). This first edition is quite rare; it was reissued in 1802. Thorp was one of the three editors of the Excerpta published in 1765.Wallis 28. Gray 28. Not in Babson.

Straßburg, Amand König, 1777. 8°, Halbleder, goldgeprägter Rückentitel, marmorierte Deckelbezüge und Vorsätze, 2 Bl., 116 S. (S. 113-114 nach 115-116), 6 gef. Tafeln mit 12 meist kolorierten Kupfern, Lesebändchen. Sehr gutes Exemplar! I, 205 - Wellcome II, 58 (nur engl. Übers.) - Libr. of the Karolinska Inst. 128f.: "The above work is considerably enlarged with an account of the defence of Anne Grandjean, also known by the name of Johann Baptist Grandjean, a case regarding a hermaphrodite which was discussed not only in Paris but all over Europe... The Chameleon, the Phoenix, the Toucan, Grus (the crane), Indus (Indian warrior with spear), Hydrus, Pavo, Paradisea, Triangulum, Musca (the fly), Volans (a flying fish) and Dorado (the goldfish). All figures are mirror imaged, because the chart is drawn as if looking towards the Earth from beyond the stars, rather than drawn from the Earth looking out. Elwe's re-issue of a great chart first published by Johannes van Keulen in 1709 and then by Ottens in 1750. One of the best Dutch celestial charts, that rolls out the entire night sky in a modified Mercator style projection.; - vita of the artist: Jan Barend Elwe ( 177 - 1815), was a Dutch publisher and book seller who reissued maps by De L¥Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sansonís and Jaillotís maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. This map has been published in 1792 in an Atlas which included 37 other maps of different countries.

[Revolutionary War Enlistment Certificate]
[Hartford?, 1777. Small broadside, oblong 4" x 2-3/4". "Christopher Sherman" is inserted in manuscript as the name of the volunteer. An "X" for "his mark" is in ink at the end, over an attempt to sign his name. For the year, "177" is in type, and the final "7" in manuscript. "Date" at the bottom is in manuscript, along with the month [probably "janry"]. Outer margin closely trimmed, but text unaffected. Very Good.An unrecorded form of Revolutionary War enlistment engagement, significant and exceedingly interesting for its reference to "the United States of America." Recorded enlistment engagements from this era-- all of them rare-- refer to the "United Colonies of America", "America," the "Colony of Massachusetts," the "Colony of Massachusetts-Bay". We have handled an unrecorded Massachusetts enlistment engagement from this period which refers to the "United States of America." Enlistment engagements from Connecticut referring to the "United States of America" from this era are unrecorded. The Continental Congress renamed the Nation "United States of America" on September 9, 1776, ordering that "In all continental commissions, and other instruments, where, heretofore, the words 'United Colonies' have been used, the stile be altered for the future to the 'United States'."Christopher Sherman was a Private under Captain William Richard's Company in the First Regiment of the State of Connecticut, commanded by Lieut. Col. Samuel Prentice, Esq., in 1777. A manuscript notation on the payroll sheet for the period January to June, 1777, states that he deserted on January 10th or 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

FORE-EDGE PAINTING). YOUNG, WILLIAM
London: Printed for J. Robson, 1777. FIRST EDITION. This history of Athens in its Golden Age is adorned with a fore-edge painting depicting the Acropolis, its highest point geographically and culturally, dominated by the great temple to Athena, the Parthenon. We see it rising in the distance from the vantage point of a road leading toward the city, with the columns of the Agora and the red-roofed buildings of the lower city in the foreground. The sheer rock escarpments rise to dominate the center of the painting, topped by the shining white temples to Greek gods, art, and culture. In the text of the present volume, Sir William Young (1749-1815) follows the rise of the republic of Athens in 508 until its fall 187 years later, discussing military and political issues in the first part of the book, and the philosophy, economics, and arts in the second.. 220 x 132 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 1/4"). xv, [i], 296 pp. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt rule border, flat spine divided into panels by single gilt rules, gilt titling, turn-ins densely gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH A LOVELY CONTEMPORARY FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE ACROPOLIS.Front pastedown with bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Spine just slightly darkened, trivial wear at head, two-inch scratch to rear board, faint spotting to boards, isolated mild foxing or small marginal smudges, but still an excellent copy, clean and fresh in a sound and pleasing binding, and THE FORE-EDGE PAINTING STILL SHARP AND WELL PRESERVED.This history of Athens in its Golden Age is adorned with a fore-ed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for J. Robson, London, 1777. x, [1], 296pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Lightly rubbed, some surface loss to lower board, slight splitting to joints. Armorial bookplate to FEP, ownership inscription of 'Tho. Cook' to same, recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to recto of FFEP, internally clean and crisp. Presentation copy, inscribed to head of title-page; 'Ad amicum suum J. Royds D.D. / W. Young', final two characters of 'Young' shaved. A presentation copy of the first edition of politician Sir William Young's (1749-1815) history of Athens, a work which garnered the then 28 year old a measure of fame. A revised second edition appeared in 1786, and a third and final in 1804. Young is remembered primarily for his governorship of the colony of Tobago and for his opposition to slavery - albeit his views being somewhat naive and in opposition to the campaign of abolitionist William Wilberforce, perhaps due to his inheritance of four sugar plantations and 896 African slaves. SCHLOSSER, Johann Georg.
Leipzig & Basel: Weygand, Johann Gottfried Müllern, J. J. Thurneysen, dem Jüngern, 1777-84. 3 works in 2 volumes (161 x 93 & 154 x 99 mm), pp. 52; 31, [1]; 132. Contemporary marbled sheep, spine decorated gilt, leather label, marbled endpapers; contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, rebacked. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Spine ends and corners worn, leaves lightly toned, with a little light foxing; very good copies in attractive contemporary bindings. First edition of each work by the German lawyer and anti-physiocrat Johann Georg Schlosser (1739-1799). A native of Frankfurt-am-Main, friend and later brother-in-law of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Schlosser gained public attention in 1771 with his first work, Katechismus der Sittenlehre für das Landvolk. In March 1773 he obtained employment from the Margrav of Baden, whose physiocratic experiments under the suoervision of Schlettwein he was familar with, and of which he initially approved. But within a year he transferred to the post of Oberamtsverweser in Emmendingen, where two of the three villages participating in the physiocratic experiment were located. Observing the experiments at close hand, Schlosser was soon dissolusioned with the system and was to become one of the chief opponents of the physiocrats in Germany. "The physiocratic system was to be dismissed not only because it suggested a tax that was damaging in its incidence, or solely because it denied historical reality, but because it rested on fallacious notions of economics. One of these was a theory of value also adopted by Adam Smi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carburi de Ceffalonie, Marin
Mit 12 (8 gefalt., 4 doppelblattgr.) Kupfertafeln von R. d'Elvaux u. Sellier nach V. Blarenbergh u. Fossier. Paris, Nyon & Stoupe, 1777. Folio. (43,0 x 28,5 cm). 47, (1) S. Halblederband d. Zt. - "Carburi's achievement compares with Fontana's moving of the obelisk in Rome a century earlier and inspired Montferrand fifty years later when he transported the enormous stone Alexandrine column across the Gulf of Finland." Lessing, Gotthold Ephraim; Hernn Pastor Goeze (Johann Melchior)
Wolfenbüttel i.e. Hamburg, Braunschweig: Buchhandlung des Fürstl. Waisenhauses, various - many without publisher information. Published 1777-1778. Octavo, brown library cloth gilt stamped on spine, various publications each with its own title page, various paginations, totalling about 500 pp. Good copy, institutional marks including bookplate and due slip on endpapers, small embossed blindstamp on first title page, once or twice to text, otherwise good clean copy. The central publications of the controversy that erupted when Lessing published 'fragments' of the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus that attacked Lutheran orthodoxy and argued for a rational deism, rejecting the theology of revelation. This led to an exchange of polemical pamphlets between Lessing and the principle defender of Lutheranism, Johann Melchior Goeze, a pastor from Hamburg. These culminated in Lessing's 11 'Anti-Goeze' tracts, that contain the seeds of his thoughts regarding religion that became the foundation of 'Nathan the Wise.' The so-called Fragmentes Dispute is considered the most important theological controversy of the 18th century, pitting Lessing's Enlightenment philosophy against Lutheran orthodoxy. Good.

PHILADELPHIA IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION)
(PHILADELPHIA IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION). ADS. 1pg. 8” x 6 ¼”. May 7, 1777. No place [Philadelphia]. An autograph document signed “John Young Secy” stating: “At a meeting of the Committee of Fifty May 7, 1777 On motion. Voted that a Committee be appointed of this board to assist the Commisarys â€" the better to enable them to prosecute the Arduous works for which this board was instituted. Messrs John Lisle, Robert Smith & Edward Evans were unanimously chosen.” Philadelphia’s Committee of Fifty was chosen in April 1777 to remove all the provisions and stores in the city so that they did not fall into British hands. In early 1777, Washington was uncertain of the British plans, but he suspected they involved capturing Philadelphia. In September, following Washington’s defeat at Brandywine, the British began an eight month occupation of the city, wintering in relative luxury while the Continental Army suffered at Valley Forge. There were some prestigious citizens on the Committee of Fifty, including the painter Charles Willson Peale. The verso states “Copy of the Vote of the Committee of 50 appointing assistant commissary.” The document has a few vertical folds, light chipping to the margins and is in very good condition. Most unusual Revolutionary War content! [Attributes: Signed Copy]

GESSNER, SALOMON
Zurich: Chez l'auteur, 1777. First French Quarto Edition. This is a desirable copy of an important late 18th century French illustrated book, a happy marriage of fashionable poetry and beautiful engravings, in a binding that carefully imitates the Neoclassical designs and tools of master binder Christian Kalthoeber. Gessner (1730-88) was a painter and poet from Zurich, who hoped to renew the ancient genre of the eclogue. According to Britannica, he was "the most successful and typical representative of a literary rococo movement. His pastorals were translated into 20 languages, including Welsh, Latin, and Hebrew." Gessner's close attention to detail and liberal use of dense crosshatching give each plate an intensity that is almost tactile, with the pale figures in high relief against the deeply etched, dark backgrounds. The binding is an excellent imitation of the work of German émigré binder Christian Kalthoeber, "considered during his day to be the finest binder in the world," according to Maggs Catalogue 966. One of Kalthoeber's most recognizable designs, used on at least seven bindings, employed a roll-tool border enclosing a central panel with garlands and pateras across the top, palmettes along the sides, and at the foot, two mermaids with curling tails flanking an urn. Examples of this can be seen in the sources cited above. Here, the mermaids are thicker and less refined in form, and the tool has been a … [Click Below for Full Description]
