SIMES, Thomas.
London: Printed for the author, 1777. Octavo (208 x 128 mm). Contemporary calf, red morocco label to the spine. A little rubbed at the extremities, corners worn, upper joint slightly cracked at the head, small tear and repair to leather on the upper board, mild offsetting from the frontispiece, very light toning else, a very good copy in unrestored contemporary condition. Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 17 similar plates with a total of 20 plans and diagrams, ad leaf for Lochee's System of Military Mathematics bound before the plates, and 14-page subscribers list after the plates. Attractive armorial bookplate of Major John Taubman, speaker of the House of Keys, the Manx Parliament, from 1799 until his death in 1822. He raised the Douglas Volunteers, and was their Major Commandant; he was also a Major in the Isle of Man Volunteers. Second edition, the same year as the first, the dedication dated just nine days after the first (1 October, rather than 22 September). A very timely publication, as Simes stresses in his secondary dedication "To the Officers of the Army": "From the rebellious conduct of the Americans it appears to me that there is a great necessity of publishing something of this kind, for the instruction of the young and unexperienced [sic] officer". In his study of the 18th-century training texts of the British Army, Fit for Service, Houlding is dismissive of Simes's merits as an author and compiler. However, he concedes that Simes's publications did fill a need in the British Army at the time, as is demonstrated by the lengthy and impressive subscriber … [Click Below for Full Description]

SIGAUD DE LA FOND
P., Gueffier, 1777, 4 vol. in 8°, ill. de 25 planches gravées dépl. d'instruments de physique, demi-basane époque, coins usés, tr. rouges. Edition originale.

[CAILLEAU (A. Ch.)]
¶ Barbier IV.973.

ROUBO André-Jacob, dit Roubo le fils;
1 p.l., vii, [2], 62 pp. 8vo, later marbled boards. Paris: l'Imprimerie Royale, 1777. First Paris edition, published in the same year as the first edition (issued at Nancy and very rare). This is a monograph on the chemical properties of sal volatile, prepared from sal ammoniac and slaked lime, and its uses in cases of asphyxiation and other accidents. It begins with the description of the experiment performed by Lavoisier at the Académie des Sciences, in which he demonstrated the asphyxiating power of carbon dioxide on a bird, which was then revived by Sage using volatile alkali fluid (ammonium carbonate), a preparation later known as "smelling salts." The Lieutenant-General of Police ordered a large number of copies to be printed for the welfare of the public. Very good copy. ? Cole 1145. (PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario)
(ENGRAVED CONCERT TICKET) (PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario). FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. PIOZZI, WILL BE A GRAND CONCERT OF VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. (London): n.d., (circa 1777 to 1780). Etched and engraved ticket in red on heavy stock (3 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches). A rare eighteenth century engraved ticket not located anywhere else. Gabriel Mario Piozzi (1740-1809), Italian singer and composer, was the music and sing teacher of the daughter of Dr. Johnson's close friend, Mrs. Hester Thrale. T the consternation of Dr. Johnson, Fanny Burney, and other society friends, Piozzi, an Italian Catholic, became the second husband of Mrs. Thrale in 1784 The ticket was engraved by C. Barnes, Coventry Street, London, engraver of British and American bookplates. The date of this ticket has two possibilities. First, it could possibly be a ticket for the benefit for Mr. Piozzi held on April 18, 1777, as advertised i the Public Advertiser, #243, March, 1777. Piozzi advertised tickets availabl from himself at half a guinea each. Secondly, and more intriguingly, it is possible this was the benefit given for him by Mrs. Thrale in 1780. Mrs. Thr met Piozzi at a party at Dr. Burney's in 1777. On August 8 she wrote in her Thraliana, "Lady Shelley & I shall get him a pretty Benefit, & he will have t guineas from me besides, for teaching Hester to sing; his journey to Brighton will be a lucky one, he has lost some of his voice by relaxation-the Sea will restore it." Mrs. Thrale and Piozzi were married July 23, 1784.

RUSSEL, William Augustus.
London: Printed for J. Cooke, at Shakespeare's-Head, No. 17, in Paternoster-Row, [1777-81?]. Folio (385 x 243 mm). Recent quarter calf, preserving contemporary red morocco label, marbled sides. Bound without the list of subscribers. Some minor chipping around page extremities, some faint finger-soiling. A very good copy. With 80 full-page copper engravings [as called for in list of cuts, though title page calls for over a hundred], including vignette frontispiece. An imposing and well-illustrated History of England from the time of the American Revolutionary War. The book was published in parts from 1777 onwards; three variant issues are known based on the dates of the historical events that the book includes, this going to 1781, the other two issues going to 1779. The book ends with the hope that the colonists will be reconciled to England. Published by John Cooke in Paternoster Row, it is probable that the book is a concoction, plagiarized from other historical books but sufficiently abridged and amended to fall on the right side of the Copyright Act of 1710. "William Augustus Russel" is a typical pseudonym for such productions: three names, the first ordinary, the second meant to sound authoritative or classical, and the surname a familiar name with an unusual spelling. Paternoster Row was known for these borderline-legal piracies; to take two prominent examples, John Cooke's neighbour at number 16, Alexander Hogg, published an unauthorized version of James Cook's Voyages in 1784, while his other neighbour at number 18, James Harrison, published a pirated version of Samu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Complete. Boards worn, some spotting of plates. A fine collection of 300 mezzotints engraved by Earlom after the works of Claude Gellée (c. 1600-82), better known as Claude (of) Lorraine, a painter who helped popularise landscapes. While still in his thirties his client list included Pope Urban VIII. However this fame led to a number of works being mis-attributed to him, often fraudulently, so in 1636 he started cataloguing his works by making tinted outline drawings of each painting he completed, with the name of the purchaser marked. Six sets of this 'Liber Veritatis' or 'Book of Truth' were sent around Europe, allowing the authenticity of Claude's paintings to be checked. One set came into the art collection of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire, and it was this example that was copied and published by John Boydell, with the text listing the titles, original owners and present owners (if known). The publication must have been a success because the third volume of mezzotints was published over 40 years later and 15 years after Boydell's death, this time from drawing in other collections besides the Duke of Devonshire's. By 1819 Earlom, the engraver of all three hundred … [Click Below for Full Description]
