CCFR (BNF)

I, 146; Roberts and Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 9; Rouse, Historic Writings on Hydraulics, 136; DSB II, p. 335. First edition of an account of towing tank experiments on the resistance of bodies of various sizes in connection with inland navigation. "Bossut was one of a very few whom d'Alembert took as students ... in 1775 he participated with d'Alembert and Condorcet in a well-known series of experiments on fluid resistance ... Bossut is one of the important figures in the history of physics and engineering education" (DSB II, p. 335). "These towing tank experiments were preceded only by those of Benamin Franklin... In the present work, Bossut reports on the experiments on the resistance of bodies in connection with inland navigation, which were conducted in 1775 by d'Alembert, Condorcet, and himself at the request of the government. Using a towing tank constructed under Bossut's supervision, it was determined that the resistance inceases as the relative area of the canal diminishes. The text describes the preparations for the experiments and supplies numerous tables of the result." (Roberts & Trent, p. 9). Very Good.

Bel exemplaire. *****. In-8. Collation : 144 pp. Demi-veau brun, dos orné. (Reliure de l'époque.).

Recherches historiques et geographiques sur le Nouveau-Monde

The rare first edition with eight illustrations (Chinese coins and medals, Buddha) and a large folding map of Siberia and the river Lena. Contemporary marbled sheep, spine in compartments, roulette to head and foot, brown morocco title-piece. Triple fillet frame. Small lack at head. Wormhole to foot of upper joint, two corners rubbed. Headpieces, joints, and corners scraped. A very good, fresh copy.An important essay on the origins of the peoples of the American continent (North and South). The author uses several approaches to pruduce a powerful comparative study of languages (most notably those of the islands of South-East Asia, Mexico and Peru), dress and traditions. Scherer's conclusion, notably relying on Classical literature and various accounts of voyages, is that the people of the Americas had several different migratory origins, including Chinese, African and Asian tribes. North America, and especially Alaska, received several waves of migration from the Bering Strait, via Kamchatka, and from Asia.  Chez Brunet à Paris 1777 in-8 (12,5x20,2cm) xii (2f.) 352pp. relié

Printed for T. Payne & Son. 1777 [8], 257 [1]pp. 8vo. Full contemp. speckled calf, gilt ruled border & bands, red morocco label; a little rubbed, corners sl. bumped. v.g.ESTC T79315. Thomas Whately, 1726-72, was an English politician serving as secretary to the treasury in George Grenville's administration and as secretary of State under Lord North. Whately however, is best known for his treatise on gardening which was, prior to the writings of Walpole and Repton, the most comprehensive work on the theory and practice of English landscape gardening. Thomas Jefferson, while researching for his own garden designs at Monticello, walked around the gardens of English country homes with a copy of Whately in his hands. Jefferson wrote of Whately: 'While his descriptions in point of style are models of perfect elegance and classical correctness, they are as remarkable for their exactness. I always walked over the gardens with his book in my hand, examined with attention the particular spots he described, found them so justly characterised by him as to be easily recognised, and saw with wonder, that his fine imagination had never been able to seduce him from the truth'.

De optimo Reipublicae statu, deque nova insula Utopia, libri duo... [and], Moriae Enkomion: Stultitiae laudatio.

London and Paris: Barbou, 1777. Duodecimo, with a frontispiece to the first work; contemporary dark green morocco, sides bordered and spine panelled in gilt, all edges gilt. The attractive Barbou edition of Utopia, bound with the matching edition of Erasmus' Praise of Folly. The friendship between More and Erasmus (1469-1536) is one of the great scholarly alliances: one of the greatest humanist scholars of sixteenth century Europe, Erasmus was hugely influential in the writing and publishing of More's Utopia. Erasmus' Moriae Enkomion, which he claimed to have written in a week whilst staying at More's London house, was first published in 1511. It is an ironically approving dissection of human society given from the perspective of the goddess 'Stultitia' or Folly. The common translation of the work as 'The Praise of Folly' removes Erasmus' original pun: 'The Praise of More'. Although not strictly an imaginary voyage nor utopia, its use of irony influenced More's elusive style in Utopia. Joints chafed and head of spine slightly chipped.

From the Library of Invercauld Castle, Braemar. v.g.The First Edition of Marmontel's philosophical novel, one of a number of 18th century dramatic and fictional representations of the Aztec and Inca civilizations, inspired by translations of Spanish chronicles of the conquistadores. Written from the perspective of the Incas it adopted a strong anti-Spanish stance, and like Frederick and Great and Graun's earlier Montezuma of 1755 he uses the allegory of Pizarro's ruthless conquest of Peru to speak out in defence of freedom or religion. Marmontel dedicated the work to Gustav III, King of Sweden, although a Swedish edition did not appear until 1795.

Indeed, it has been added to this multi-volume edition, in addition to the figures. llustrée a portrait by Monet frontispiece of Volume I and Figures 4 Meon. Volumes II: 4 figures Meon. Volume III: 10 figures by Monnet. Beautiful illustration, neat and fine. Edition remarkably executed.Full Calf icy blond contemporary. Back tooled raised. Part of title morocco garnet and volume number in red leather (with wheels). Roulette and tail cap. Triple Net framework on boards. Upper jaw fragile tail of Volume I; This volume also includes a small scratch with tail missing. A lack of a cm ahead of Volume IV. Volume III of the lower jaw split tail (three wormholes along the jaw). A snag with the lack headbox of Volume VI. Hat Volume VII fragile head. A corner waned Volume VII. Despite these shortcomings, nice set to desirable appearance.Although it can not truthfully be described as important literary production Palissot, it was undoubtedly a major figure in the literary life of his time; and the various parts, notes, comments, letters that frame every comedy (the editing is very rich from this point of view) are remarkable for the literary life of the second half of XVIII, including with regard to the famous quarrel philosophers whose Palissot was originally attacking outrageously in his eponymous play (probably poorly designed to dramaturgical point of view, but excellent in his writing, each making mockery fly).Besides theater and poem The Dunciad, the volumes contain literary memoirs (dictionary of characters letters), correspondence with Voltaire (he was protected in his early career), critics of his contemporaries (Freron, Piron Duclos ...). We identify for tastefully criticism from his contemporaries on his own pieces. Palissot was probably an upstart, with incredible for controversy and ridicule talent, and as much for flattery; this edition of his work retains the greatest interest in the world of letters of the second half of the eighteenth. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         The Original Astronomical Observations made in the course of a Voyage towards the South Pole, and round the world, in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure...

London: Printed by W. and A. Strahan; and sold by J. Nourse. J. Mount and T. Page. Booksellers to the said Board, 1777. Quarto, with a double-page plate, two folding plates and a folding map; attractively bound in full calf, spine ornately gilt to a period design. Very rare: 'the true appendix to Cook' (Beaglehole), this publishes the official astronomical results of Cook's second voyage. Probably produced in relatively small numbers because of its scientific nature, the book is 'as important as it is rare... I have not noted a copy offered for sale in recent years and should a copy become available it would certainly arouse great competition between collectors' (Davidson). As the introduction makes clear, the work was commissioned by the Board of Longitude, who undertook to send two representatives on Cook's second voyage, to accurately record their observations and, in the process, to test some recent innovations such as Shelton's astronomical clock and the two chronometers by Larcum Kendall and John Arnold, made on the principles of John Harrison. The work includes a fine double-page engraving of meteorological phenomena after the expedition's official artist, William Hodges. The text was edited by Wales because Bayly had already departed on the third voyage in the Discovery in 1776. As a publication resulting from Cook's second voyage, this is significant for the history of discovery in the Antarctic: as Rosove notes, 'Its particular interest lies in its first-ever measurements from the far south (including south of the Antarctic Circle), its connection with the rapidly evolving science of longitude determination and its association with James Cook... '.The long introduction is by Wales and in it he attacks Dalrymple and the other proponents of the Great Southern Continent theory - 'the notion which some persons have got concerning the necessity of a counterpoise, is so very unphilosophical, that I am much surprised how so many ingenious gentlemen have happened to adopt it'. Wales's own experiences on the voyage are said to have partially inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Provenance: Commander Ingleton, with his bookplate and shelfmark. A very good copy in a handsome modern binding.

CCFR (BNF)

A Voyage round the World, in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop Resolution, commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the years 1772, 3, 4, and 5.

London: B. White [etc.], 1777. Two volumes, quarto, with a large folding map; in contemporary diced russia leather, gilt borders to sides. First edition of the alternative account of Cook's second voyage, published some six weeks before the official version. Although the Forsters had to rush to complete the work, it is 'an important work and a necessary supplement to the official account' (Davidson).Johann Forster and his son Georg had sailed together on Cook's second voyage after Banks and his associates withdrew. Initially given the task of preparing the official account, the Forsters' fractious relationship with the Admiralty soon became impossible, and Johann Forster was dismissed from taking any part in the official publications. Thus denied, the Forsters set to work to forestall the official version with their own account, taking advantage of the loophole that only Johann had any legal agreement with the Admiralty: the account appeared in Georg's name. The publication was the source of great rancour, which was only enflamed when the astronomer, Wales, roundly accused Georg of being author in name only, the real author being solely his father. This is palpably untrue and, as Georg states in his preface, he did indeed write the account in consultation with his father's journal. Whatever the case, it effectively signalled the end of the Forsters' chances in England, and by mid-1780 both had returned to Germany. The split between Cook and the Forsters has scarcely been repaired even now. Sir Maurice Holmes' comment on the work is arch, and Beaglehole was never keen to promote the role of the Forsters. However, recent work by Michael Hoare and Nigel Erskine has seen the importance of the Forsters' contribution to Cook's voyage reappraised in a more positive light. The map slightly spotted and some light spotting at beginning and end of first volume; rebacked, a very good copy.

Paris: Pissot & Nyon, 1777. Octavo, with a folding engraved map at the end; a fine copy in contemporary French marbled calf, spine gilt. The first French edition of the first full account of Cook's second voyage to have been published, translated by De Fréville from the 1775 London printing. This is also the first French account of the Antarctic. It includes an account of the Adventure's time on the Tasmanian coast.Marra's was the first substantial account of the voyage to appear in print, and was published anonymously to circumvent Admiralty regulations against the use of shipboard journals for personal profit by members of the expedition. An audience eager for news of these famous adventures meant that publishers were anxious to bring out narratives as soon as possible after the return of the voyagers, in continental Europe as well as England.Inscribed "malesherbes" with a shelfmark at head of front flyleaf, so probably from the library of Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, royalist, politician and botanist, executed in 1793, who has been described as "one of the sweetest characters of the 18th century" Label renewed.

If the first volume is devoted strictly speaking the philosophy of nature in history, the following volumes away quickly in order to devote himself entirely to the study of man (morality, religion, politics). Volume IV of particular interest is given, its purpose being the study of monsters of nature (man of the woods, fish man, eunuchs ...) bibliographical sources are valuable. These are the last two volumes studying the relationship of man to the religion which immediately sent the book condemned to fire and banish her in perpetuity with confiscation of property. The latter not only the Christian religion alone, but most then known cults of those Veterans and current ones. At the end of the work, a very severe political reflection on religion. It was called the author of "monkey Diderot." In that it uses the same forms to achieve his goal, no doubt, but this is a lot common among philosophers of the eighteenth.         Specimen Zoologiae Geographicae, Quadrupedum domicilia et migrationis sistens...

Leiden: Theodor Haak, 1777. Quarto, with a large folding map (500 x 695 mm.) in a very good impression; an excellent unsophisticated copy, large and uncut with wide margins, blue paper wrappers. Rare: the first book to attempt a description of the worldwide distribution of mammals, with the information summarized in a large folding world map, one of the first maps to include Captain Cook's 1770 discoveries on the east coast of Australia. The fine accompanying world map renders the east coast of Australia, and lists the Kangaroo and several species of Australian wild dog. Designed by Zimmermann himself and prepared by the German naturalist August Wilhelm Knoch (1742-1818), this was the first map to show animal distribution (Robinson, Early Thematic Mapping in the History of Cartography). This remarkable work is an early and extensive survey of the worldwide geographical distribution of domestic and migratory quadrupeds. Zimmermann concluded that land-masses were differently distributed in prehistoric times, making this the first in a long line of publications that led to the theory of continental drift; some of his conclusions influenced Charles Darwin and Charles Lyell. Importantly, the details of animal habits in Australia, the South Pacific and New Zealand derive from the great voyages, from Quiros to Cook, making this study an example - along with the various publications of the Forsters on the Cook voyages - of the earliest application of Pacific discoveries to general scientific research.Zimmermann, geographer and zoologist, was best known as a teacher and as the patron of the mathematician Gauss. He published a number of monographs on mammals, including several published in the nineteenth century specifically on American animals. A few marks, but in good original condition, uncut and unpressed.
