Anquetil-Duperron (1731-1805) became an adventurer for the sake of ancient Indo-Iranian religion and philosophy. Returned from India, he published his first great work: Zend-Avesta, Ouvrage de Zoroastre, Paris 1771. It comprised the major books of Parsism in first European translation, actually the first of an Oriental sacred text other than the Bible. Anquetil was immediately accused of forgery by William Jones and John Richardson. In the following years he read seven large dissertations on the age and authenticity of the Avestan texts to the French Academy. His enlightened apologist Kleuker (1749-1827) not only rendered Anquetil's translations and studies carefully into German, but added linguistic researches of his own. Later on he translated the epoch-making first volumes of Jones's ,Asiatick Researches' as well as Paulinus's ,Systema Brahmanicum'. His work strongly promoted 19th century Indo-European studies in Germany. Geiger & Kuhn, Grundriß der iranischen Philologie II, p. 1 & 40 ff.; cf. Encyclopedia Iranica, s.v. Anquetil-Duperron. - Bindings a bit rubbed and bumped, spines darkened. Scattered browning and foxing as always, stronger in places. A very good copy.

Des Ritter's Carl von Linne königlich Schwedischen Leibarztes vollständiges Natursystem des Mineralreichs nach der zwölften lateinischen Ausgabe in einer freyen und vermehrten Uebersetzung von Johann Friedrich Gmelin.

. Nürnberg, Raspe, 1777-1785. Four parts in four. 8vo. lxiv, [42], 2,155 pp. and 57 mostly folded engraved plates. Original half calf over speckled boards. morocco label with gilt title on the spines.* Rare first and only German edition and the main work on mineralogy and palaeontology by Linnaeus. Linne attached great importance to crystal structure for classification and thus was one of the pioneers in crystallographie. More important were his contributions to palaontology and historial geology: he described many fossils, including trilobites (Entomolithus), which he correctly placed among the arthropods... (DSB). Hoover Collection 542: 'Linnaeus achieved worldwide influence mainly through his pioneer work in systemizing botany but he also applied his passion for the arrangement to the animal and mineral kingdoms. In these mineral studies he describes many fossils and expounds his views on the age of the world, being careful not to upset the ecclesiastical orthodoxy of his time'.. Pictorial bookplate of Birger Strandell and small inoffensive handstamp of former owner on title pages. The Strandell provenance is quite interesting: The Hunt Library of Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, PA holds the Dr. Birger Strandell Collection which includes all published works by Linnaeus, in almost every known edition and translation as well as many of those by his many students, and much of the world's literature about Linnaeus and his students. This is the largest assemblage of such materials outside Uppsala, Sweden, and it includes approximately 3,000 volumes. The Institute acquired this collection in 1968 from Strandell, who was a Stockholm physician and direct descendant of Linnaeus. Apparently for some unknown reason this set was left out or perhaps it was sold before 1968. Bindings with slightly worn to head and tail. The interior is remarkably clean and overall it is a very good copy. DSB 8, p. 379; Soulsby, 100. Not in Ward and Carozzi.(Postage on this item might be more than indicated, please inquire).

The Country Twenty Five Miles round New York, Drawn by a Gentleman from that City

London: R. Sayer & J. Bennett, 1777. An extremely rare map, a broadside that captures the dramatic events that were unfolding in the New York theatre of the Revolutionary War This exceptionally rare map is a highly important historical document of Britain's New York campaign, conducted in 1776, the first full year of the Revolutionary War. It was printed as a broadside to inform the British public about the exciting news from across the Atlantic. The survival rate of broadsides is extremely low, and this example is exceptional in that it has survived in remarkably excellent condition. This work would have been one of the most effective communication tools of the time, as it pictorially represented the geography of the theatre of events, and explained the principal aspects of the conflict in a clear and concise manner. The present example is the third of four issues of this map, and as it deals with a story in progress, each new edition was updated from the former. The finely engraved map is centered on the city of New York, located on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. A series of concentric circles, each at five mile intervals, radiate from this epicenter. The map embraces the area as far north as the Tappan Zee, as far south as the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth County, New Jersey, as far west as Parsippany, New Jersey, and as far east as Hampstead, Long Island. Outlined beautifully in original colour, the map features all major towns, country churches and battle sites, indicated with pictorial symbols, and delineates all of the important roads. In essence, the map encompasses the entire theater of the New York campaign, featuring all of the geographical information an informed reader would need to know in order to place war news in its proper context. Beneath the map is the "Chronological Table of the Most Interesting Occurences since the Commencement of Hostilities in North America," which begins with the mention of what would later be known as the Boston Tea Party on December 16th, 1773. It proceeds to recount the early events of the war itself, most notably the Battle of Bunker Hill outside of Boston (June 17th, 1775) and the British evacuation of that city after a year-long siege on March 7th, 1776. The list of events is expressed in a professional manner, referring to the British respectfully as "His Majesty's" forces and the Americans as the "Provincials." While reading through the events up into the summer of 1776 it would seem that providence was not on the British side, a point underscored by the notation on July 4th, 1776 which reads "continental congress declares the United States of America Independent". This impression is accurate, as the British had been effectively driven out of the Thirteen Colonies. If "His Majesty's" forces wished to take war to the Americans, they would have to act with great speed and force. As one follows the events from mid-July as it turned into August, one notices that such a reprise was in the works. A massive force of 88 ships and 34,000 troops congregated on and around Staten Island under the overall command of General Sir William Howe. As noted on the map itself, the British landed at Gravesend Bay, Brooklyn on August 22nd, and the note on the 27th that reads "the Provincials defeated" could not have been a greater understatement. This refers to the Battle of Long Island, the largest altercation of the entire war, in which the British decisively defeated the Americans, forcing them to abandon the island for Manhattan. The note after September 11th, which mentions the "conference" between the British command and a "Deputation" of Americans, refers to a meeting in which an American embassy under Benjamin Franklin rejected British terms for ending hostilities following the American defeat in Brooklyn. This set the stage for the successful British invasion of Manhattan. While that island was not fully secured by the British until November, 1776, it became the principal British base, remaining in their possession for the duration of the war. In addition to the fascinating chronological table, the text section provides a great deal of fascinating and historically important information. There is the "Alphabetical Table of the Principal Towns in North America and their Distance from New York," and a table listing the population statistics of the various American colonies, which notes that New York province then had an estimated 250,000 inhabitants. The right-hand column features information regarding the command structure, troop-strength, and the general disbursement of both the British and American forces, which placed information that would have frequently appeared in the newspapers in a coherent and orderly context. Hawkes, who took over the business of the esteemed cartographer Thomas Kitchin, likely intended this work to be purchased by members of the country's wealthy merchant class whose financial concerns were greatly mitigated by the conflict. This point is supported by its issue price of "One Shilling," a considerable sum at the time for a single printed sheet. This fine work is not only an attractive and scarce cartographic object, but an extremely important document relating to the history of the Revolutionary War and the development of the media and war reporting in the eighteenth-century. Guthorn, British Maps of the American Revolution, 146/1; Sellers & Van Ee, Maps & Charts of North America & West Indies , 1096; Steven & Tree, "Comparative Cartography," 43(c), in Tooley, The Mapping of America.         A Voyage Round The World, In His Britannic Majesty’s Sloop, Resolution, commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the Years 1772, 3, 4, and 5

London: Printed for B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson, 1777., 1777. 2 Volumes. 4to. pp. xviii, [2], 602; 2 p.l., 607. without the errata leaf at the end of Vol. I. folding engraved map (frontis.). An attractive set in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, corners renewed, spines tooled in gilt (Vol. I title-leaf professionally remargined at lower edge & upper outer corner with small repair, marginal repair to GG2-3 affecting part of headline, occasional spotting). First Edition of this important account of Cook’s second voyage, which preceded the publication of the official record by some six weeks. The author and his father, Johann Reinhold, served as naturalists on the expedition. While the elder Forster was originally to have written the account, he was forbidden to do so because of a dispute with the Admiralty concerning his emoluments. It is based on his journal and also draws from Cook’s own although no acknowledgement is given. Humboldt said that he was indebted to this work more so than to any other for his early love of nature and tropical beauty. On his second, and historically most important voyage, Cook determined that the ‘Terra Australis Incognita’, which supposedly lay between New Zealand and South America did not exist, and accomplished the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. He also suggested the existence of an antarctic land mass, but this was not to be proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century. Cook revisited New Zealand, and discovered, or re-explored and charted many of the islands in the Pacific, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahita and the Society Islands, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, and New Caledonia. A vast amount of scientific and ethnographical information was gathered, and as a result of new techniques developed by Cook, not one crew member on the voyage died from scurvy, a remarkable achievement for the time and for which Cook was awarded the Copley gold medal. Beddie 1247. Cox I p. 60. Hill p. 108. Hocken pp. 16-17. Holmes 23. Kroepelien 450. O’Reilly-Reitman 382. Sabin 25140. Spence 464.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Oeuvres de Salomon Gessner Traduits de l'Allemand.

A Zuric chez l'Auteur 1777 - 2 volumes. Large 4to, 257 x 195 mms., pp. [xvi], 184; [3], 4 - 190, engraved title-page in each volume, separate engraved title-page in volume 1 for Contes Moraux, list of subscribers in volume 1, 10 full-page engraved plates in each volume, engraved head- and tail-pieces (39 in all) for each tale or section, early 19th century half calf, spotted boards (a little worn). A fine set, with very fresh impressions of the (often erotic) plates. This is certainly one of the most attractive editions of Gessner's works, even in a French translation. Gessner was responsible for choosing the illustrations, and the erotic overtones of many of the engravings perhaps enjoyed a more robust reception in this French translation. Copac locates a copy at the NLS in these islands, and there appear to be numerous copies in North America and Europe.         Origines des grâces.

S.n. 1777 - - S.n., A Paris 1777, In-8 (11,5x20cm), relié. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Topographical Map of the North Part of New York Island, Exhibiting the Plan of Fort Washington, now Fort Knyphausen, with the Rebels Lines to the Southward, which were Forced by the Troops under the Command of the Rt. Honble. Earl Percy, on the 16th Novr 1776, and Survey'd immediately after by Claude Joseph Sauthier. To which is added the Attack made to the Northd. By the Hessians. Survey'd by Order of Lieut. Genl. Knyphausen

Published by Permission of the Rt. Honble. The Commissioners of Trade & Plantations by Wm. Faden, London 1777 - This is one of a small handful of Revolutionary War battle plans that relate to the City of New York. Sauthier's delineation of upper Manhattan was the most accurate and detailed to date. After the British occupation of New York, General Washington evacuated Manhattan, except for Fort Washington at the northern tip of the island. The British under General Howe moved north and attacked the main American army at White Plains in October 1776. But the Americans still remained in control of Fort Washington behind their forward lines. On November 16, the British mounted a six-column attack on the fort that forced the patriots to surrender. Washington's decision not to evacuate Fort Washington was one of his most serious tactical errors of the war. Almost three thousand men were taken prisoner and the British seized large quantities of supplies and weapons. Four days later General Cornwallis was sent to take Fort Lee on the opposite New Jersey shore, but the Americans stationed there had retreated. Sauthier illustrated the four phases of the attack with the letters A through D. The key at right identifies the first attack as that by Gen. Knyphausen, the second by Matthews and Cornwallis, the third as a feint, and the fourth by Lord Percy.         Graduale Romanum.

Clementis Plomteux, Leodii (Liege) 1777 - 12mo - 17.5 x 11 cm.; (26) - 520 - cxc - (2) pp. Full leather with a 6 panel spine, paste-on red leather label with gold lettering on the second panel. Marbled end papers. Full title reads: "Graduale Romanum Juxta Missale ex Decreto Sacro-Sancti Concilii Tridentini Restitutum, et Clementis VIII. Auctoritate Recognitum; Adjectis Officiis novissime editis ad exemplar Missalis Romani. Editio Novissima, Multo auctior & emendatior". The unpaginated preliminaries consist of a two page introduction (Typographus ad Lectores), 4 page "Index Proprii de Tempore", 7 page index "Index Proprii de Sanctis" (by month), 3 page "Index Communis", 2 page approbatory notices (dated 1772, 1777, and 1764), 4 pages with "In Aspersione Aquae Benedictae" (the Asperges), "In Duplicibus aliud", and the antiphon "A die Sancto Pasche". Pages 1 through 520: "Proprium Missarum de Tempore". Pages i through cxc: "Commune Sanctorum". Previous owner's inscription dated October 14, 182(4)? on the blank verso facing the title page with some ink offsetting to the bottom half of the title page. Page 247/248 shows some paper loss on the fore edge margin at the top (a triangular sliver 1/2 cm x 5 cm) that does not affect any text. Approximately ten pages show some mild staining from the fore edge in 2 to 7 cm. with no significant effect to the text or paper itself. The binding has been professionally repaired with a new spine attached and spine label. The leather is rubbed on the board edges and worn on the fore edge of the front and the head edge of the back. These defects have been repaired and stabilized. The binding is very solid and the pages show no signs of having been trimmed other than for the very first binding. All-in-all, a rather remarkable and complete copy of an early "Schola" or "Choir" copy (designed for holding in the hand) of the intoned prayer of the church. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE AMERICAN CRISIS. NUMBER II. By the Author of COMMON SENSE

Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Styner and Cist, [1777].. pp.[9]-24. Dbd. Light stains on title and last leaf. Good. The very rare second part of the series by Paine which eventually stretched to thirteen numbers, written to boost the morale of American troops. Dated "Philadelphia, January 13, 1777" on page 24. Only the first five parts were separately printed as pamphlets, the rest being given directly to newspapers. This second part of THE AMERICAN CRISIS is directly addressed to Lord William Howe, the British commander in North America who though he had the upper hand militarily, had allowed Washington to evacuate New York, and had suffered recent defeats to the Americans at Trenton and Princeton. Paine mocks Howe and his demands on the American populace to cease their rebellion. Paine writes: "By what means, may I ask, do you expect to conquer America? If you could not effect it in the summer when our army was less than yours, nor in the winter when we had none, how are you to do it? In point of generalship you have been outwitted, and in point of fortitude outdone." The separate pamphlet editions of THE AMERICAN CRISIS, all of which are rare, were printed in various cities and towns. The older references, such as Evans and Howes, describe the Philadelphia printings of Parts I-III, but later findings by Edwin Wolf 2nd and R.W.G. Vail have uncovered other early editions of this historical American political work. See especially Wolf's explanation of the various Philadelphia editions of the first three parts of THE AMERICAN CRISIS printed by Styner and Cist ("Evidence Indicating the Need for Some Bibliographical Analysis of American-Printed Historical Works" in PBSA 63 [1969], pp.266-68).         Nouvelle Carte des Côtes des Carolines, Septentrionales et Meridionales de Cap Fear a sud Edisto. Levees et Sondees par N. Pocock en 1770

Chez le Rouge, Rue des Grands Augustins, Paris 1777 - A very rare nautical chart of the Carolina coast, and one of the most important maps relating to France's participation in the Revolutionary War. This very finely engraved sea chart was produced by the prominent Parisian cartographer Georges Louis Le Rouge for use by the French Navy, which entered the Revolutionary War the year after this map was printed. It embraces the coast of the Carolinas from Cape Fear, North Carolina, all the way down to South Edisto Island in South Carolina. The map also depicts the pictorial outlines of the key ports of Charleston and Georgetown. This chart was included in Le Rouge's Atlas Amériquain Septentrionale , and as the title suggests was based on manuscript charts produced by Nathaniel Pocock. Curiously, the identity of Pocock or the location of any of his charts has remained an enigma for historians. Nevertheless, the map features relatively advanced hydrographic information, including depth soundings and bearing lines to major landmarks and lighthouses. The chart features seven very attractive mariner's views of the coast, and the sea is embellished with two frigates under full sail and is traversed by rhumb lines that radiate from a compass rose. Examples of this chart would have been used at sea by French officers, as their navy engaged British ships on numerous occasions off the Carolina coast. Phillips, A List of Geographical Atlases in the Library of Congress, 1210, map 13, Sellers & Van Ee, 1398. Copper-engraved sea chart, with wide margins, in excellent condition.
