Explication des ceremonies de la Fete-Dieu d'Aix

Aix-en-Provence: Esprit David, 1777. 1st edition. A Fine Festival Book <p>[GREGOIRE, Gaspard, pere.] Explication des ceremonies de la FÍte-Dieu díAix en Provence. . . . 12mo. [2], 220pp. Fronts. portrait of Rene díAnjou (1408-80) & 13 plates ( 1 folding with music), mostly engraved by Gaspard GREGOIRE fils (1751-1846), after drawings by his brother Paul GREGOIRE. 190 x 109 mm. Wrappers c. 1800, uncut, spine chipped. Very faint dampstain in gutter of first two leaves, a little browning & soiling. Very good copy. Aix: David, 1777.</p><p>First Edition. A very full account of the Corpus Christi pageant in Aix, with twelve plates showing theater and dance, and one with notation for five accompanying pieces of music. Barbier II 378 attributes the work to the Aix silk manufacturer, Gaspard Grergoire, and his sons Gaspard and Paul. Gaspard fils manufactured a famous velvet, "velours Gregoire," which could be painted; his brother Paul became the first to paint on velvet. Their works were exhibited in Paris, at the Louvre, in the early 1800ís; the Gregoire fabrics are preserved in several French museums today. (Paul, by the way, was a deaf-mute from birth.) The Gregoires, as Aix manufacturers, would probably have had a prominent role in the pageant, which was, even in the 18th century, one of the great city affairs of the year. Doubtless they supplied cloth for the costumes, and were in a position to provide specialist descriptions of the masks and dress of the participants.</p><p>The Corpus Christi pageant reached its height in the 15th century, when it became in effect the principal feast of the Church, a time for the most magnificent processions of nobles and clerics, and for the mystery plays put on by the merchants and craftsmen which were the foundation of modern theater in the countries of Europe. The late medieval traditions of the pageant were preserved at Aix still in the 18th century. Gregoire saw in them the hand of the first patron of the Aix pageant, Rene, duke of Anjou, whose daughter Marguerite married Henry VI of England. Rene was viewed around Gregoireís time as a paragon of chivalry, as well as a poet, painter and musician; he was indeed a patron of the arts, whose reputation earned him a line in Shakespeareís Henry VI ("whose large style agrees not with the leanness of his purse" quoted in Oxford companion to French literature in the article on Rene). Whatever personal guidance the duke gave the pageant, its symbolic costumes, dramas and dances were rooted in the Christian and pagan folklore of the region. </p><p>Gregoire&#39;s full descriptions of the various ceremonies of the week-long springtime holiday in its last years before the French Revolution are very valuable for reconstructing French folk habits and social arrangements. Lipperheide II 2804. Benezit V 190 re the Gregoires. We note that NUC NG 0500151 shows a 1773 edition of the Explication; however, no other reference shows this, nor does the book itself give any indication of reissue: the dedication is dated January, 1777; the approbation is August, 1776; and footnotes to the text give references to the year 1776. </p>

        Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano

Rome 1777 - This beautiful perspective view of Raphael's Loggia, served as the frontispiece to the celebrated text, "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano". This arresting print is a general perspective view of Raphael's design for the Loggia at the Vatican, with a large profile portrait of Raphael in a medallion over the entrance to the corridor. The plate served as the frontispiece to the first part of the "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano", which depicted the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. This remarkable print, one of the first to be published of the decoration of the Logge on the main storey of the Vatican apartments, was probably planned as early as 1760, but was not executed until between 1772 and 1776. The project as a whole was carried out by the painter Gaetano Savorelli, the draughtsman Ludovico Teseo, the architect Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. The whole series was of importance not just for the size and magnificent colouring of the prints, but also because of the influence they had on contemporary taste. The decision was made to "borrow" elements from Raphael's Vatican tapestries and insert them where the original frescoes were in too poor a state to be legible. The finished plates therefore represented an amalgam of design elements presented with a crisp freshness of colour that held enormous appeal and stimulated the taste for the "grotesque" in the neo-classical period. Cf. Brunet IV, 1110; cf. Berlin Kat. 4068; Lambert Pattern and Design (V. & A.: 1983), p. 26; "Raphael Invenit: Stampe da Rafaello" (1985) Volpato 1; Raphael: Reproduktions-graphik aus vier Jahrhunderten (Coburg: 1984), p. 104; G. Marini (editor) Giovanni Volpato 1735-1803 (1988) no. 198. Copper engraving by Volpato after a drawing by Camporesi, later professional hand-colouring. Good condition. Expert strengthening to verso of right outer blank margin, some old light creasing to 3 inches of the sheet.

Original papers relative to Tanjore: containing all the letters which passed, and the conferences which were held, between his Highness the Nabob of Arcot and Lord Pigot, on the Subject of the Restoration of Tanjore. Together with The material Part of Lord Pigot's last dispatch to the East India Company. The whole connected by a narrative, and illustrated with notes and observations.

"This volume was designed to influence British public opinion in favor of the Nabob who was objecting to the violation of his suzerainty by the East India Company" (JFB Catalogue). George Pigot, Baron Pigot (1719- 1777) entered the Company's service in 1736, and became governor and commander-in-chief of Madras in 1755. In 1758-59 he defended Madras against the French, and occupied Pondicherry; in 1763 he returned to England where he became an Irish peer and obtained a seat in Parliament. In 1775 he returned to India to occupy his former position at Madras, but he was soon involved in a quarrel with the majority of his council over the proposed restoration of the Rajah of Tanjore, which Pigot strongly favored. He was arrested by order of the council, and died while still a prisoner on May 11, 1777. This book contains a detailed presentation of Pigot's point of view, and was published before new of his death reached England. In 1779 the matter was discussed in Parliament, and four of those responsible for Pigot's arrest were tried and fined £1000 each. Ancillary to this, James Macpherson, the Scot, at the time was agent to the Nabob of Arcot, on whose behalf he made several effective appeals to the public, and amongst others published Letters from Mahommed Au Chan, Nabob of Arcot, to the court of Directors. To which is annexed a State of facts relative to Tanjore, with an Appendix of original papers, 4to. 1777. The James Ford Bell Library, An Catalogue , O113. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        OEuvres Completes de M. Helvetius.

A Londres 1777 - 4 volumes. 8vo, 206 x 120 mms., pp. [iv], 484; [ii], xx, 513 [ 514 - 515 Approbation and Privilege, 516 blank]; xxviii, 586; xiv, 416, including half-title in each volume, attractively bound in full contemporary tree calf, gilt tooled borders on covers, spines richly gilt in compartments with oval sunburst motif, red and green morocco labels, marbled end-papers. A fine and attractive set, A bookplate loosely inserted in volume 4 claims "From Croom Court/ Roger Payne binder/ 1738 - 97 used a tool/ used in this binding." Helvetius (1715 - 1771) is probably best-known for his De l'Esprit (1758) and its successor De l'Homme (1772). Although the imprint claims London for the place of publication, it is clearly a French, and probably, Parisian printing. De l'Esprit had been condemned by the French parliament soon after it was published and was burnt, so Helvetius was clearly still considered dangerous to the structure of the state in 1777. The imprint is false, as the volumes were printed in Maastricht by Dufour and Roux. David Smith: Bibliography of the writings of Helvetius (2003), O.3. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Anquetil-Duperron (1731-1805) became an adventurer for the sake of ancient Indo-Iranian religion and philosophy. Returned from India, he published his first great work: Zend-Avesta, Ouvrage de Zoroastre, Paris 1771. It comprised the major books of Parsism in first European translation, actually the first of an Oriental sacred text other than the Bible. Anquetil was immediately accused of forgery by William Jones and John Richardson. In the following years he read seven large dissertations on the age and authenticity of the Avestan texts to the French Academy. His enlightened apologist Kleuker (1749-1827) not only rendered Anquetil's translations and studies carefully into German, but added linguistic researches of his own. Later on he translated the epoch-making first volumes of Jones's ,Asiatick Researches' as well as Paulinus's ,Systema Brahmanicum'. His work strongly promoted 19th century Indo-European studies in Germany.

. Nürnberg, Raspe, 1777-1785. Four parts in four. 8vo. lxiv, [42], 2,155 pp. and 57 mostly folded engraved plates. Original half calf over speckled boards. morocco label with gilt title on the spines.* Rare first and only German edition and the main work on mineralogy and palaeontology by Linnaeus. Linne attached great importance to crystal structure for classification and thus was one of the pioneers in crystallographie. More important were his contributions to palaontology and historial geology: he described many fossils, including trilobites (Entomolithus), which he correctly placed among the arthropods... (DSB). Hoover Collection 542: 'Linnaeus achieved worldwide influence mainly through his pioneer work in systemizing botany but he also applied his passion for the arrangement to the animal and mineral kingdoms. In these mineral studies he describes many fossils and expounds his views on the age of the world, being careful not to upset the ecclesiastical orthodoxy of his time'.. Pictorial bookplate of Birger Strandell and small inoffensive handstamp of former owner on title pages. The Strandell provenance is quite interesting: The Hunt Library of Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, PA holds the Dr. Birger Strandell Collection which includes all published works by Linnaeus, in almost every known edition and translation as well as many of those by his many students, and much of the world's literature about Linnaeus and his students. This is the largest assemblage of such materials outside Uppsala, Sweden, and it includes approximately 3,000 volumes. The Institute acquired this collection in 1968 from Strandell, who was a Stockholm physician and direct descendant of Linnaeus. Apparently for some unknown reason this set was left out or perhaps it was sold before 1968. Bindings with slightly worn to head and tail. The interior is remarkably clean and overall it is a very good copy. DSB 8, p. 379; Soulsby, 100. Not in Ward and Carozzi.(Postage on this item might be more than indicated, please inquire).

The Country Twenty Five Miles round New York, Drawn by a Gentleman from that City

London: R. Sayer & J. Bennett, 1777. An extremely rare map, a broadside that captures the dramatic events that were unfolding in the New York theatre of the Revolutionary War This exceptionally rare map is a highly important historical document of Britain&#39;s New York campaign, conducted in 1776, the first full year of the Revolutionary War. It was printed as a broadside to inform the British public about the exciting news from across the Atlantic. The survival rate of broadsides is extremely low, and this example is exceptional in that it has survived in remarkably excellent condition. This work would have been one of the most effective communication tools of the time, as it pictorially represented the geography of the theatre of events, and explained the principal aspects of the conflict in a clear and concise manner. The present example is the third of four issues of this map, and as it deals with a story in progress, each new edition was updated from the former. The finely engraved map is centered on the city of New York, located on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. A series of concentric circles, each at five mile intervals, radiate from this epicenter. The map embraces the area as far north as the Tappan Zee, as far south as the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth County, New Jersey, as far west as Parsippany, New Jersey, and as far east as Hampstead, Long Island. Outlined beautifully in original colour, the map features all major towns, country churches and battle sites, indicated with pictorial symbols, and delineates all of the important roads. In essence, the map encompasses the entire theater of the New York campaign, featuring all of the geographical information an informed reader would need to know in order to place war news in its proper context. Beneath the map is the "Chronological Table of the Most Interesting Occurences since the Commencement of Hostilities in North America," which begins with the mention of what would later be known as the Boston Tea Party on December 16th, 1773. It proceeds to recount the early events of the war itself, most notably the Battle of Bunker Hill outside of Boston (June 17th, 1775) and the British evacuation of that city after a year-long siege on March 7th, 1776. The list of events is expressed in a professional manner, referring to the British respectfully as "His Majesty&#39;s" forces and the Americans as the "Provincials." While reading through the events up into the summer of 1776 it would seem that providence was not on the British side, a point underscored by the notation on July 4th, 1776 which reads "continental congress declares the United States of America Independent". This impression is accurate, as the British had been effectively driven out of the Thirteen Colonies. If "His Majesty&#39;s" forces wished to take war to the Americans, they would have to act with great speed and force. As one follows the events from mid-July as it turned into August, one notices that such a reprise was in the works. A massive force of 88 ships and 34,000 troops congregated on and around Staten Island under the overall command of General Sir William Howe. As noted on the map itself, the British landed at Gravesend Bay, Brooklyn on August 22nd, and the note on the 27th that reads "the Provincials defeated" could not have been a greater understatement. This refers to the Battle of Long Island, the largest altercation of the entire war, in which the British decisively defeated the Americans, forcing them to abandon the island for Manhattan. The note after September 11th, which mentions the "conference" between the British command and a "Deputation" of Americans, refers to a meeting in which an American embassy under Benjamin Franklin rejected British terms for ending hostilities following the American defeat in Brooklyn. This set the stage for the successful British invasion of Manhattan. While that island was not fully secured by the British until November, 1776, it became the principal British base, remaining in their possession for the duration of the war. In addition to the fascinating chronological table, the text section provides a great deal of fascinating and historically important information. There is the "Alphabetical Table of the Principal Towns in North America and their Distance from New York," and a table listing the population statistics of the various American colonies, which notes that New York province then had an estimated 250,000 inhabitants. The right-hand column features information regarding the command structure, troop-strength, and the general disbursement of both the British and American forces, which placed information that would have frequently appeared in the newspapers in a coherent and orderly context. Hawkes, who took over the business of the esteemed cartographer Thomas Kitchin, likely intended this work to be purchased by members of the country&#39;s wealthy merchant class whose financial concerns were greatly mitigated by the conflict. This point is supported by its issue price of "One Shilling," a considerable sum at the time for a single printed sheet. This fine work is not only an attractive and scarce cartographic object, but an extremely important document relating to the history of the Revolutionary War and the development of the media and war reporting in the eighteenth-century.         A Voyage Round The World, In His Britannic Majesty&#146;s Sloop, Resolution, commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the Years 1772, 3, 4, and 5

London: Printed for B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson, 1777., 1777. 2 Volumes. 4to. pp. xviii, [2], 602; 2 p.l., 607. without the errata leaf at the end of Vol. I. folding engraved map (frontis.). An attractive set in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, corners renewed, spines tooled in gilt (Vol. I title-leaf professionally remargined at lower edge & upper outer corner with small repair, marginal repair to GG2-3 affecting part of headline, occasional spotting). First Edition of this important account of Cook&#146;s second voyage, which preceded the publication of the official record by some six weeks. The author and his father, Johann Reinhold, served as naturalists on the expedition. While the elder Forster was originally to have written the account, he was forbidden to do so because of a dispute with the Admiralty concerning his emoluments. It is based on his journal and also draws from Cook&#146;s own although no acknowledgement is given. Humboldt said that he was indebted to this work more so than to any other for his early love of nature and tropical beauty. On his second, and historically most important voyage, Cook determined that the &#145;Terra Australis Incognita&#146;, which supposedly lay between New Zealand and South America did not exist, and accomplished the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. He also suggested the existence of an antarctic land mass, but this was not to be proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century. Cook revisited New Zealand, and discovered, or re-explored and charted many of the islands in the Pacific, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahita and the Society Islands, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, and New Caledonia. A vast amount of scientific and ethnographical information was gathered, and as a result of new techniques developed by Cook, not one crew member on the voyage died from scurvy, a remarkable achievement for the time and for which Cook was awarded the Copley gold medal.         Oeuvres de Salomon Gessner Traduits de l'Allemand.

A Zuric chez l'Auteur 1777 - 2 volumes. Large 4to, 257 x 195 mms., pp. [xvi], 184; [3], 4 - 190, engraved title-page in each volume, separate engraved title-page in volume 1 for Contes Moraux, list of subscribers in volume 1, 10 full-page engraved plates in each volume, engraved head- and tail-pieces (39 in all) for each tale or section, early 19th century half calf, spotted boards (a little worn). A fine set, with very fresh impressions of the (often erotic) plates. This is certainly one of the most attractive editions of Gessner's works, even in a French translation. Gessner was responsible for choosing the illustrations, and the erotic overtones of many of the engravings perhaps enjoyed a more robust reception in this French translation.
