America, New England - Tobias Lotter, 1776.

THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MAP OF NEW ENGLAND PUBLISHED DURING THE BRITISH COLONIAL PERIOD"A Map Of The Most Inhabited Part Of New England Containing The Provinces Of Massachusets Bay and New Hampshire. With the Colonies of Conecticut and Rhode Island.' Copper engraving in four joined sheets, published by Tobias Lotter of Augsburg in 1776. With original hand colouring. Size: 97,5 x 101,7 cm.Fine example of the large format map of New England and Long Island by the 18th century cartographer Bradock Mead (aka John Green). Bradock Mead"s map of New England is generally considered the single most important and influential map of New England published during the British Colonial period. Its importance was such that it was revised and reissued well into the 1790s, and over this period it served as a primary source for leading European and American mapmakers.First issued in 1755, the map provided the largest-scale and most detailed and accurate portrait of the region to date. The map was significantly revised in the 1760s, including a complete re-engraving of much of northern New England and New York and addition of the inset map of Boston. These changes are so extensive that the map, viewed in its proper context, needs to be viewed for historical purposes as a new map. The changes included major improvements to the natural geography of the region (changes to the New Hampshire Lakes Region are particularly striking) , the introduction of settlements in central and northern New Hampshire, and the division of Vermont into dozens of "Wentworth Grant' towns. The map depicts New England to 44°30" North as well as Long Island and the Hudson River Valley. Township, county and provincial boundaries are shown, as are roads, forts, and meetinghouses. Rivers and streams are depicted with relative care, while the many mountain ranges are indicated haphazardly with archaic "molehill' symbols. The contrast between southern and northern New England is striking: Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River are entirely laid out in a grid of counties and townships; whereas much of New Hampshire and almost all of Vermont are denominated "Wildernes [sic] lands of the crown not yet appropriated.' Further, the geography of the north country is but poorly understood, as evidenced by the sketchy detail and distended outlines of New Hampshire"s Lakes Region. Present-day Vermont is shown under the aegis of New Hampshire, though the ambiguity of its status at the time is indicated by the absence of a border with New York.Adding to the informational value and decorative appeal of the map are an early chart of Boston Harbor at bottom center, an inset plan of Fort Frederik at upper left, and a decorative cartouche portarying an idealized version of the Pilgrims" landing at Plymouth.A table of notes at the right lists Mead"s sources for the map, and in doing so makes clear how much care and effort went into its compilation.Price: € 6.850,-.

Entrance of the Grotta of Pausilipo (tav. XVI).

Napoli, 1776 - Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Ottime condizioni. Tratta da: HAMILTON WILLIAM. Napoli, Pietro Fabris, 1776-1779.Campi phlegraei. Observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei being an account to the grat eruption of the mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779 L'opera costituisce un caso unico nella storia del libro illustrato settecentesco, in quanto riunisce un testo di grande interesse scientifico a una serie di 54 tavole di grande valore artistico disegnate dal vero, eseguite all'acquaforte su lastra di rame e dipinte all'acquerello dal grande vedutista Pietro Fabris (attivo tra 1763 e 1779).

SECOND EDITION OF THE FIRST TWO PARTS OF TEXT AND THE FIRST FOUR PARTS OF PLATES, first edition of the remaining parts and plates. NO COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION CAN BE TRACED BY US. "According to two sources (Agazzis, 1852: 375; Bequaert, 1950: 149), two volumes of an entirely new German edition were published. The first part appeared in 1776 with revised text by P. E. S. Müller, and the second part in 1784 with a revised text by Meuschen. The pagination is stated to be continuous through the two parts (pages 1-240)" (Henrik H. Dijkstra, A collation of the three editions of Georg Wolfgang Knorr's conchological work "Vergnügen" (1757-1775), Basteria, vol. 74(1-3), p.38). Both Agassiz and Bequaert referred to Boehner (1786), a work Dijkstra has not seen and no copy of this Knorr edition could be located by him. "Der zweyte Theil erschien 1784 in fortlaufenden Zahlen von S. 125-240." (Boehmer, Bibliotheca scriptorum historiae naturalis., 1786, p. 444). In fact, no copy of the revised edition could be located by us in any public library and thus this may be the only copy known to exist. In this revised edition, also the text of the engraved frontispieces for the first two parts has been reset from 'Schnecken und andere Geschoepffe.' (as given in the first edition) to 'Schnecken und Muscheln.' in order to match the text of the part 3 to 6 frontispieces. A couple of figures and plate signatures have been redrawn in this edition, especially in parts II and III (e.g. the plates XIV* fig. 2, 3; XV* fig. 4; XXIII* fig. 2, 4, 5; XXIV* fig. 4; XXV* and XXVI* all fig.; XXVII* fig. 1; XXVIII* fig. 1, 3, 4; XXIX* all fig.; XXX* fig. 2, 3; I** to III** all fig. and IV** fig. 2-5). These changes appear to be identical with the Dutch editions Verlustiging der oogen. of part I (1771) and II (1772). Further, the part designation (e.g. "P.III", "P.IV") has been added to the top-left corner of each plate for parts III and IV compared to the first edition where only the final parts V and VI have those signatures. Part 6 contains 10 additional plates depicting white specimens. These plates are uncoloured and the black background is painted in. The plate numbering was done in white paint. With its hand-coloured engraved plates, Knorr's Vergnügen der Augen. can be regarded as one of the finest 18th-century works on shells. Knorr started his work at a time when Linnaeus finished the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae, the starting point for the binominal nomenclature in zoology.         An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.

London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1776. First edition of the economist's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Quarto, 2 volumes. Bound in full brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red morocco spine labels. In near fine condition. Remarkably clean throughout with some light toning to the title page of volume one and small stamp on the half title page of volume II. An exceptional example of this landmark work. Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory...his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange...Labour represents the three essential elements-wages, profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy, Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control...The Wealth of Nations is not a system, but as a provisional analysis it is complete convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM).

Bassompierre 4to (24.9 cm, 9.8"). xxxi, [1], 411, [1] pp.; 51 plts.. 1776 First edition: Treatise on ancient dress among the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Jews, Romans, and other people. The author, a Flemish artist also known as Andries Cornelis Lens, came to the study of antiquarian clothing by way of his classically inspired focus in painting. Illustrated with 51 copper-engraved plates done by Pitre Martenasie, this is an "Ouvrage estimé" according to Brunet (who seemingly mistakenly cites 57 engravings as opposed to the 51 given by von Lipperheide, described in institutional holdings, and present here). Contemporary calf, rebacked in complementary style, spine with gilt-stamped leather title and author labels and gilt-stamped compartment decorations; original leather acid-pitted and cracked over edges and extremities.         ETAT-PRESENT DE LA LOUISIANE, AVEC TOUTES LES PARTICULARITES DE CETTE PROVINCE D'AMERIQUE, POUR SERVIR DE SUITE A L'HISTOIRE DES ETABLISSEMENS DES EUROPEENS DANS LES DEUX INDES...

The Hague: Chez Frederic Staatman, 1776. Antique-style three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Occasional light tanning. Very good. Streeter describes this as the second edition, somewhat rearranged, of Champigny's LA LOUISIANE ENSANGLANTEE, a work issued with a false London imprint (actually Paris) in 1773. Howes, however, gives the two titles separate entries. "An absorbing account of the trial and punishment of leading French citizens of Louisiana, inflicted on them by Alexander O'Reilly, the Spanish Governor of the province at its transfer from France to Spain after the Seven Years War" - Streeter. Louisiana had been turned over by the French to the Spanish in the peace settlement in 1763, as part of France's ejection from North America by the victorious English and Spanish. The French citizens of Louisiana resented the weak Spanish government, and attempted a coup against it in 1768. The uprising was put down with vengeance by O'Reilly, sent to establish absolute Spanish authority. This book discusses in detail events from 1762, when the cession was agreed to, through 1771.         AN ORATION DELIVERED AT THE STATE-HOUSE, IN PHILADELPHIA, TO A VERY NUMEROUS AUDIENCE; ON THURSDAY THE 1st OF AUGUST, 1776...

Philadelphia Printed; London, Re-printed: for E. Johnson, 1776. Modern paper covered boards, printed paper label. A few light fox marks; faint stain in gutter of first text page. Closed tear in one leaf, not affecting text. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt. A curious, and spurious, Revolutionary pamphlet, allegedly printing an oration by Samuel Adams, which was not written by him, and which was never published in Philadelphia. This text was issued in the wake of the American Declaration of Independence, and whoever the author was, he was well-versed in revolutionary rhetoric. Howes calls it "a London forgery designed to show that the colonies were bent on independence." "It extols the merits of the newly independent colonies, but overtones suggest that it was actually written in England" - Adams. A Dublin edition followed the same year. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 76-106a.         Biblia, das ist: Die ganze Göttliche heilige Schrift Alten und Neuen Testaments.

Germantown: Gecruckt und zu finden bey Christoph Saur 4to. 2 pts. in 1 vol. [2] ff., 992 pp,; 277, [1] pp., [1] f.. 1776 Popularly known as the "Gun Wad" Bible, this is the third edition of the first American Bible in a European language and it precedes the first American Bible in English by six years. It is known as the "Gun Wad" Bible from Isaiah Thomas's recounting of the sale of Saur's estate in 1778, wherein he says that during the Battle of Germantown the purchaser of the unbound sheets of the 1776 Bible "sold a part of [them] to be used as covers for cartridges, proper paper for the purpose being at that time not to be obtained" in the dislocations of the Revolution — well, maybe. What is not open to question is the fact that this is the first Bible printed from type cast in America. There are several variants of the edition: In this copy the main title-page is printed in black only and on the New Testament title-page the place of printing is given as "Germantown." Provenance: On a front blank, "Joseph Price junr his Bible"; on front pastedown, "Abraham Price was born the 22. Day of June 1770. Contemporary calf, very plain in style with minimal tooling and no spine label ever; rebacked and old spine reattached. One leather and metal clasp remaining. Hinges (inside) strengthened and free endpapers reattached. The usual foxing, staining, and browning only; perhaps somewhat less than usual — a clean, untattered copy. Now housed in a quarter brown leather folding slipcase.

Conant, successor to Mr Whiston, in Fleet-Street. 1776 xxxii, 282pp; [4], 308pp; [4], 315, [1]p, half titles, engraved vignette portrait to each titlepage, one full-page woodcut. 8vo. One v. sl. marginal tear to T1 vol. II, some offset browning on endpapers. A fine clean set bound in full contemporary sprinkled calf, smooth spines, gilt bands, red morocco title labels, dark green oval vol. labels set within gilt wreaths. From the Library of Invercauld Castle, Braemar.ESTC T149862. Born in London, the son of Ezekiel King, he was related to the family of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. From Westminster School, where he was a scholar under Richard Busby, at the age of eighteen he was elected to Christ Church, Oxford in 1681. There he is said to have dedicated himself completely to his studies. Reportedly after eight years he had read over 22,000 books and manuscripts. He died in 1712, but it was to be over 60 years before his collected works were published. The editor notes that 'from the scattered manner, however, in which they have been hitherto published, but few of his admirers have been able to obtain a complete copy. That inconvenience is here remedied; and some pieces are preserved, which, though they add greatly to our Author's reputation, were in danger of being lost to the world'.

Interiour view of the crater of Mount Vesuvius as it was before the great eruption of 1767. (tav. IX).

Napoli, 1776 - Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Ottime condizioni.Tratta da: HAMILTON WILLIAM.
