From Westminster School, where he was a scholar under Richard Busby, at the age of eighteen he was elected to Christ Church, Oxford in 1681. There he is said to have dedicated himself completely to his studies. Reportedly after eight years he had read over 22,000 books and manuscripts. He died in 1712, but it was to be over 60 years before his collected works were published. The editor notes that 'from the scattered manner, however, in which they have been hitherto published, but few of his admirers have been able to obtain a complete copy. That inconvenience is here remedied; and some pieces are preserved, which, though they add greatly to our Author's reputation, were in danger of being lost to the world'.

Interiour view of the crater of Mount Vesuvius as it was before the great eruption of 1767. (tav. IX).

Napoli, 1776 - Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Ottime condizioni.Tratta da: HAMILTON WILLIAM. Napoli, Pietro Fabris, 1776-1779.Campi phlegraei. Observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei being an account to the grat eruption of the mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779 L'opera costituisce un caso unico nella storia del libro illustrato settecentesco, in quanto riunisce un testo di grande interesse scientifico a una serie di 54 tavole di grande valore artistico disegnate dal vero, eseguite all'acquaforte su lastra di rame e dipinte all'acquerello dal grande vedutista Pietro Fabris (attivo tra 1763 e 1779). John Hancock Signed 1776 Privateering Act

Philadelphia 1776 - Printed Document Signed as President of the Continental Congress. Instructions to the commanders of Private Ships of Vessels of War, which shall have Commissions or Letters of Marque and Reprisals, authorizing them to make Captures of British Vessels and Cargoes. [Philadelphia: printed by John Dunlap], dated in text April 3, 1776 [signed between April 3, 1776 and October, 1777]. 1 p., 8 3/4 x 13 1/2 in. Framed to 24 1/2 x 22 1/2 in. The March 23, 1776 resolve of the Continental Congress to empower privateers, was a momentous step in the run-up to the Declaration of Independence. Congress had founded a Navy the previous fall, but had few funds to build it, and thus relied heavily on privateers to harass British shipping. "You may, by Force of Arms, attack, subdue, and take all Ships and other Vessels belonging to the Inhabitants of Great-Britain, on the High Seas." Partial Transcript "You may, by Force of Arms, attack, subdue, and take all Ships and other Vessels belonging to the Inhabitants of Great-Britain, on the High Seas . You may, by Force of Arms, attack, subdue, and take all Ships and other Vessels whatsoever carrying Soldiers, Arms, Gun-powder, Ammunition, Provisions, or any other contraband Goods, to any of the British Armies or Ships of War employed against these Colonies. . You may, by Force of Arms, attack, subdue, and take all Ships and other Vessels whatsoever carrying Soldiers, Army, Gun-powder, Ammunition, Provisions, or any other contraband Goods, to any of the British Armies . employed against these Colonies. . If you, or any of your Officers or Crew shall, in cold Blood, kill or maim, or, by Torture or otherwise, cruelly, inhumanly, and contrary to common Usage and the Practice of civilized Nations in War, treat any Person or Persons surprized in the Ship or Vessel you shall take, the Offender shall be severely punished."Historical BackgroundThe resolve to empower privateers, passed on March 23, 1776, was a momentous step in the run-up to the Declaration of Independence. Congress had founded a Navy the previous fall, but had little funds to construct ships and relied heavily on privateers. In ad hoc fashion, George Washington, commanding outside of Boston in late 1775, had authorized the outfitting of vessels by local merchants to attack British supply ships. There were complicated consequences to this decision: would privateers' behavior fall under the dictates of international law, and would there be official admiralty courts to apportion prizes? If not protected in some way by Congress, would captured privateers be treated as pirates by the British Navy? As historian Robert Middelkauff states, as Congress "began the move toward declaring independence in 1776, it also moved toward a full-scale naval war," apportioning funds, establishing a naval committee (later a marine committee), and framing regulations. This resolve, signed by President of Congress John Hancock, goes part of the way in answering the difficulties encountered by Washington and his privateers in the first year of combat. Congress formalized the process by which commissions, or official Letters of Marque, were given to private merchants engaged in attacking enemy shipping. Such merchants now had to post bonds to ensure their proper conduct under the new regulations. According to the National Park Service, Congress granted roughly 1,700 Letters of Marque during the Revolution. "Nearly 800 vessels were commissioned as privateers and are credited with capturing or destroying about 600 British ships" and inflicting "about $18 million" in damage, a remarkable contribution to the American war effort.John Hancock (1737-1793) was a Boston merchant prince and leader of the colonial resistance movement. Born in Braintree, he was adopted by his paternal uncle, Thomas Hancock, when his father died in 1742; under his uncle he learned the mercantile trade and was groomed for partnership.         Album of Original Pencil Drawings, Portraits of Women Attributed to Pierre-Louis Henri Grevedon

n.p.: n.p., n.d.. Hardcover. Near Fine. Full chestnut morocco, boards and spine ornately stamped in gilt and blind, including "Grevedon" in blind, and "F.H." in gilt, on upper board; oblong 8vo (305x235mm); contains 21 original pencil drawings, each about 90x140mm, mounted to the recto only, one per leaf. Undated, but likely drawn in the late-18th or early-19th century (tho they could be as late as mid-19th); a pencilled notation on the FFEP indicates that the artist is Pierre-Louis Henri Grevedon, and the drawings collected by Franklin De Haven. Just a little light wear to binding; internally very clean, with the small leather ex-libris of American collector Robert Hoe. Grevedon (1776-1860) was known for his beautiful portraits of young women, and these bust-length portraits are no exception; showing all sorts of women, some plainly dressed (perhaps a maid), and others in more extravagant costume (coiffure, headdress), including a bride. Grevedon published several collections of drawings in his lifetime, and some of his works now reside in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard, and more.

A Grammar of the Arabick Language.

London: by William Richardson for J. Murray Â… and D. Prince, Oxford,, 1776. In which the Rules are illustrated by Authorities from the best Writers; principally adapted for the Service of the Honourable East India Company. Quarto in twos (230 × 178 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked with original gilt spine laid down, red morocco letterpiece, board-edges tooled in gilt. Latin and Arabic types. Learned inked annotations and corrections in a contemporary hand, and the same in pencil, probably Kilvert's (hence slightly later). Light rubbing to board-edges, old repair to corners, browning to pastedowns and free endpapers along edges, light toning throughout, short closed tear to bottom edge of leaves S2 and T to no loss. A very good copy. First edition, with the pencilled ownership inscription of noted Church of England clergyman Francis Kilvert (1793-1863), uncle and namesake of the Victorian diarist, to the front pastedown (dated 1824), title-page and second blank. Kilvert's "literary and learned interests ranged widely" and he was especially learned in Latin poetry (ODNB), though there is fair reason to presume the (pencilled) scholia in this copy to be his: the first English Arabists were "primarily clergymen by training and vocation, and valued Arabic above all as ancillary to the study of Hebrew and the Bible", and if scholars eventually came to view Arabic as worthy of study in its own right, clergymen such as J. M Rodwell (d. 1900) were naturally at the forefront of the discipline until well into the 19th century (Russell, ed. The 'Arabick' Interest of the Natural Philosophers in Seventeenth-Century England, p. 27). Following A Dictionary, Persian, Arabic and English (1777-80), written in collaboration with William Jones, "Richardson made another attempt to tap the British-Indian market in 1776 with A Grammar of the Arabick Language, aimed at the East India Company's servants. He modelled his work on Jones's very well received Persian grammar of 1771, stressing, as Jones had done, that what he was offering was a work in which 'instruction' and 'entertainment' would be mixed, and that it would therefore be very different from the turgid linguistic studies of the old orientalists. Richardson, like Jones, wished to be taken for a man of taste as well as of learning". "A work of merit" (Lowndes), this an attractively provenanced copy in an appealing contemporary binding.

[AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT, SIGNED, BY EPHRAIM DOOLITTLE IN JULY 1776, REGARDING A CRACK DOWN ON LOYALISTS IN MASSACHUSETTS DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION]

Petersham, Ma, 1776. Folio. Minor fold wear and foxing, a few tiny holes along the center fold, affecting just a handful of words. Very good. An excellent Revolutionary-era document recording the minutes of a meeting of several Massachusetts Committees of Safety, concluded just eight days after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Ephraim Doolittle, who signed and probably wrote up these minutes, was a prominent figure and political agitator in Revolutionary Massachusetts. He had served in the French and Indian War, at both Ticonderoga Crown Point, and as a colonel of Massachusetts minutemen in 1775, participating at the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775. The document begins, "At a Convention of the Committee of Safety of the Towns of Hutchinson, Templeton, Athol and Petersham." The meeting was called to discuss how Tories would be treated in these central Massachusetts towns. They resolved that Tories "should deliver all their arms and emplements of war immediately into the hands of the select men of Petersham, and that they should not go out of the town of Petersham without a pass" and "that no more than two should assemble together at any place except public worship, legal town meetings, or funerals." If any Tories "should presume to violate any such restrictions...at such a crittical day as the present that this body will use their utmost influence that they...shall be commited to close confinement and there be continnued until our polittical troubles are at an end." In particular, the Rev. Aaron Whitney, an outspoken Loyalist, was called out for punishment after having "publickly declared that he will keep open doars for the assembling of such persons." The minutes go on to trace the reasons for these restrictions, including a 1775 "riotous assembling" of several Tories who had "entered into a combination or covenant utterly subversive of our natural and charter'd rights and tending to strengthen and assist the enemies of our constitution." A list of twenty-four restricted persons follows, including John Chandler, a prominent, long-time selectman and local politician who had once served alongside Doolittle, but whose Loyalist leanings made him an enemy at this point. In fact, this document can be seen as the culmination of the struggle between Loyalists and Revolutionaries in central Massachusetts. Doolittle and Chandler has been at odds for a decade regarding issues of taxation and other controversial matters related to the Crown, and the situation had now come to a head. A very interesting Revolutionary Massachusetts document, written at a critical moment in the course of the American Revolution. The first copies of the Dunlap broadside of the Declaration arrived in Boston on July 13, and the first Massachusetts printings were the same day, so it seems unlikely that the news had reached rural Petersham by July 12. Still, the Revolutionary spirit in central Massachusetts is evident, even obvious, in the present document.

L'ENTRE TRIUMPHALE DE TROUPES ROYALES A NOUVELLE YORCK

Augsburg, 1776. Light toning and foxing. Small tear at top of sheet repaired, not affecting image. Colors still quite bright and fresh. Very good. View of the British entering New York from a series called "Collection des Prospects," popularly known as "Vues d' Optique," published by engraver François Xavier Habermann in Augsburg in 1776. Reverse text above image reads: "L'Entre Triumphale De Troupes Royales a Nouvelle Yorck." Text below the image, in both German and French, reads: "Der Einzug der Koniglichen Volker in Neu Yorck / L'Entre Triumphale de Troupes royales a Nouvelle Yorck." Many of the "Vues d' Optique" were imaginative, crude, and inaccurate, although some were very well done. In this case the buildings are rather more elegant than those of New York in 1776 probably were. The letters above the text were deliberately reversed since these prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror, which gave the viewer an illusion of depth and reversed the image. Accompanying the print is a 1943 letter from the Curator of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York describing the series of "Vues d'Optique" with New York subjects. Habermann also produced views of Boston, Philadelphia, and Salem.

View from the sea of the promontory called Capo dell'Arco in the Island of Ventotiene (tav. XXXIV).

Napoli, 1776 - Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Ottime condizioni.Tratta da: HAMILTON WILLIAM. Napoli, Pietro Fabris, 1776-1779.Campi phlegraei. Observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei being an account to the grat eruption of the mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779 L'opera costituisce un caso unico nella storia del libro illustrato settecentesco, in quanto riunisce un testo di grande interesse scientifico a una serie di 54 tavole di grande valore artistico disegnate dal vero, eseguite all'acquaforte su lastra di rame e dipinte all'acquerello dal grande vedutista Pietro Fabris (attivo tra 1763 e 1779).

[Florence: Giuseppe Vanni, 1776. Etching, with engraving, coloured by hand, after Vanni, Lorenzi or Manetti. Very good condition. A fine image from "one of the half-dozen or so great bird books" (Fine Bird Books). This beautiful plate comes from 'Storia naturale degli uccelli', of which Peter Dance writes "The production of its five massive folio volumes must have been one of the most remarkable publishing ventures ever undertaken in Florence. Begun in 1767, and [based on birds taken from the collection of Giovanni Gerini], it was completed ten years later. It was larger, better engraved and more vividly coloured than any previous work on birds, but these are not its only claim to fame. The attitudes of the birds themselves give this book its unique character. Strutting, parading, posturing, and occasionally flying....are birds whose real-life counterparts would surely disown them, and not without reason, for Manetti seems in these pictures to be depicting the human comedy, the habits and mannerisms of contemporary Italian society. His book may still be rated among the very greatest bird books, if only for its magnificent comicality" (S. Peter Dance, The Art of Natural History: Animal Illustrators and their Work . London: 1978) Cf. Dance 70; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990) p.92; cf. Nissen IVB 588; cf. Wood p.450; cf. Zimmer p.241.

Erste Grundlage zu einer ausgesuchten Sammlung neuer Kupferstiche.

Bern 1776 - [28], 82pp., engraved vignette to the title-page. Original wrappers, the spine paper is no longer present. Unrecorded in auction records, or Copac. small 8vo. Bern. 1776. An important and very scarce work, and "one of the first generation of print collecting handbooks published specifically for the non-connoisseurial new print collector. The aim of [this] handbook was specifically to aid the ‘common' print collector both in acquiring and in using. a collection. As Junker put it, print collecting had now to do not only with the ‘prince' or ‘count', but also with the ‘person born of the middle class', and he himself would provide guidance through the recommendation of a ‘Cabinetchen' of 100 prints. This Cabinetchen with the diminutive implying the relationship of size between the portfolio of the new collector and the ‘Cabinet' of the established print lover, was available purely on the grounds that it was affordable, totalling 370 Gulden. This affordability was due to the important fact that the prints were new reproductive engravings, not original Old Master prints. The sum of 370 Gulden was in fact approximately ten times the yearly salary of a tutor and perhaps half a professor's annual income. The sum required for a ‘start up' collection was therefore not one to be taken lightly, and implied a degree of seriousness on the part of the aspirant collector. Junker began his discussion of the 100 recommended prints with the category of Geschicte or History. This was followed by the categories of Portrait, Landscape, and what Junker called Ideale. at the end came a section entitles Schwarze Kunst, or mezzotints."
