[5] ff., 155, [1] pp., fold. plt.. 1776 From January 1748 until his death in early July 1765 Manuel Rubio y Salinas served as archbishop of Mexico City, a period that coincided nicely with the rebirth of the Mexican mining industry and the creation of great wealth, new secular and ecclesiastical establishments, and a building boom in the viceregal capital. Rubio and the Church benefitted from the new wealth in significant material ways, but social justice concerns and religious duties were always high on the bishop's list of things requiring his attention, as demonstrated for example in => his leadership in securing the 1754 papal declaration making Our Lady of Guadalupe the patron saint of New Spain. When Rubio died, the entire viceregal capital turned its energy to commemorating him, much of which is summarized in this volume. It includes a Spanish-language account of the archbishop's last days, his death, and burial (pp. 1–87), followed by Pedro Jose Rodriquez de Arizpe's Latin-language funeral oration ("Maximum occidentis sidus. Ilmus, nempe d. doct. Emmanuel Josephus Rubio, et Salinas . . . In cujus solemni funere quinto idus octobris ann. MDCCLXV, declamabat p. doct. Petrus Josephus Rodriguez, et Arizpe," pp. 87–112), and ending with Cayetano Antonio de Torres's Spanish-language funeral sermon (pp. 115–51). The Spanish-language account of the burial includes a detailed description of the funeral monument (i.e., cenotaph) that the city erected for the archbishop, including the inscriptions and epigrams that were by F.J. Alegre. Following the last page of the text, there is => a large folding engraved plate by Manuel Villavicencio after the design of the monument by Miguel Cabrera, "pintor americano." The engraving is detailed, exquisite, and includes a measure of scale. => A good source for the study of Mexican colonial architecture, commemorative ceremonies, and treatment of and thinking about death. Contemporary vellum with remnants of ties; spine damaged with loss to hungry rodents not affecting paper. One short tear in margin of folding plate, well away from image. => A very clean, very good copy.

Contemporary mottled calf, richly gilt decorated spine with red gilt lettered label. A pioneer work on the botany of Australia and the South Pacific. The Forsters, father and son, had sailed as naturalists on Cook's second voyage, an enormous collection of new genera and species were collected."This work is botanically important as containing a large number of new generic and specific names relating to plants of Australia and Polynesia. It appears that in the preparation of this undertaking the Forsters were able to use the fine natural history library belonging to Sir Joseph Banks, and to seek the advice of his librarian Daniel Solander. Furthermore, they had free access to Banks and Solander collections made on Cook's first voyage (1768-71) to the Pacific, and to Solander's manuscripts' (Henrey II, p. 167).         OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATURE OF CIVIL LIBERTY, THE PRINCIPLES OF GOVERNMENT, AND THE JUSTICE AND POLICY OF THE WAR WITH AMERICA. TO WHICH IS ADDED, AN APPENDIX, CONTAINING A STATE OF THE NATIONAL DEBT, AN ESTIMATE OF THE MONEY DRAWN FROM THE PUBLIC BY THE TAXES, AND AN ACCOUNT OF THE NATIONAL INCOME AND EXPENDITURE SINCE THE LAST WAR.

London:: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand,. [1776]. [6], 128 pp, lacking the half title. Pages 32-48 are moderately spotted, mostly in the margins; otherwise a clean text. Later marbled wrappers bound into later half morocco and brown pebbled cloth [lightly rubbed, bookplate removed from front pastedown]. Good+. [offered with] ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATURE AND VALUE OF CIVIL LIBERTY, AND THE WAR WITH AMERICA: ALSO, OBSERVATIONS ON SCHEMES FOR RAISING MONEY BY PUBLIC LOANS; AN HISTORICAL DEDUCTION AND ANALYSIS OF THE NATIONAL DEBT; AND A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE DEBTS AND RESOURCES OF FRANCE. London: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand. 1777. xvi, 176 pp. Light spotting and toning to the title leaf. Bound a bit clumsily, with title leaf loosening, in modern two-toned cloth. Lacking the free endpapers. Good+. The first edition of each of these highly influential works. Of the 'Observations,' Church writes, "The encouragement derived from this book had no inconsiderable share in determining the American colonists to declare their independence." It "ranks next to Paine's Common Sense as the most often reprinted work of its time. It is said to have had considerable influence on the drafting of the Declaration of Independence" [Decker]. Advocating eloquently the Natural Rights theory of Liberty, Price warns, "There is nothing that requires more to be watched than power. There is nothing that ought to be opposed with a more determined resolution than its encroachment." In the separately-issued 'Additional Observations,' a "continuation" [Adams] of the 'Observations,' Price adheres to his embrace of Natural Rights and its axiom that government requires the "dominion of EQUAL LAWS, made with COMMON CONSENT and not... of ANY MEN OVER OTHER MEN." Of the War against America, "I cannot expect any other than a tragical and deplorable issue to this contest." The War "must shock the feelings and the reason of every considerate person; a war in which rivers of blood must be shed, not to repel the attacks of enemies, or to maintain the authority of government within the realm, but to maintain sovereignty and dominion in another world." From this perspective, he answers authoritatively each British argument favoring the War. Price also absolves the Colonists of responsibility for African Slavery. "It is not the fault of the Colonies that they have among them so many of those unhappy people. They have made laws to prohibit the importation of them; but these laws have always had a negative put upon them here because of their tendency to hurt our Negro trade." FIRST EDITIONS. Observations: Howes P586. Adams, American Independence 224a. Adams, American Controversy 76-118a. Church 1137 [Fifth Edition]. 31 Decker 21 [later London edition]. Additional Observations: Howes P583. Adams, American Controversy 77-75a. Kress B.71.

AN ORATION DELIVERED AT THE STATE HOUSE, IN PHILADELPHIA, TO A VERY NUMEROUS AUDIENCE, ON THURSDAY THE 1st OF AUGUST 1776; BY SAMUEL ADAMS, MEMBER OF THE **** ********** THE GENERAL CONGRESS OF THE ****** ****** OF AMERICA.

[London] Philadelphia, Printed. London, Re-printed:: For E. Johnson,. 1776. [2], 42 pp, as issued. Title leaf dusted, else Very Good in early quarter morocco and marbled boards. "Although this was published over Samuel Adams's name, there is no indication that he wrote it, or that there was a Philadelphia edition. It extols the merits of the newly independent colonies, but overtones suggest that it was actually written in England" [Adams]. Howes calls it "a London forgery designed to show that the colonies were bent on independence." Adams notes that excerpts from the pamphlet first appeared in the London Chronicle in mid-October 1776. A Dublin edition followed in the same year. The Revolutionary rhetoric certainly is genuinely Adams-like. "Our Fore-Fathers threw off the Yoke of Popery in Religion; for you is reserved the honor of leveling the popery of Politicks...The homage that is paid in some Countries to Monarchs and their favourites is disgraceful to humanity...In the judgment of Heaven there is no other superiority among men, than a superiority in Wisdom and Virtue."       W. Strahan & T. Cadell, London 1776 - Octavo; early repair to front hinge and spine, in contemporary sheep. First collected edition of these political pamphlets, published anonymously.Probably the most famous of the four is the last, 'Taxation no Tyranny; An Answer to the Resolutions and Address of the American Congress', a scathing attack on those 'zealots of anarchy' who have 'denied to the Parliament of Britain the right of taxing the American Colonies'.       - Napoli, con Licenza de'Superiori, 1776. 4to (210 x 165mm). pp. viii, 135, (1), with 14 folded engraved plates. Contemporary half calf (ends of spine worn). First edition of an important and rare work on microscopy. Giovanni Maria della Torre (1710-1782) was an Italian scientist and corresponding member of the academies of Paris, Berlin and the Royal Society of London. He perfectioned the oculars of telescopes and succeeded, like Toricelli, in constructing powerful miscroscopes by using small glass globes. "Della Torre was a man of wide culture and of wide scientific curiosity. His studies led him into the history of philosophy, optics, and microscopy (he made several new histological identifications with an excellent compound microscope that he himself had built)". (DSB). The first 44 pages deal with the construction of different kinds of microscopes, illustrated with 2 detailed plates. The rest of the work deals with objects observed through the microscope.Provenance: Small oval stamp of Marcel Bekus on verso of title.Poggendorff II, 1118. [Attributes: First Edition]

A Paris De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1776.         Travels in Greece: or an Account of a Tour made at the Expense of the Society of Dilettanti.

Oxford: 'Printed at The Clarendon Press . Sold by J. Dodsley, J. Robson, T. Cadell, P. Elmsley, and G. Robinson, London; and by D. Prince, Oxford', 1776. - 4to (261 x 219mm), pp. 4 (title, verso blank, plates and references to plan), xiv (contents), [2 (errata and advertisement)], 304; 7 engraved maps and plans by J. Barber and T. Kitchin, 2 folding; occasional light spotting or marking, light offsetting from engravings onto text, one folding map with skilfully repaired tears; contemporary speckled half roan over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, red-sprinkled edges; slightly rubbed and scuffed, traces of bookplate on upper pastedown, nonetheless very good, clean copy; provenance: David Rhys-Phillips (20th-century booklabel on upper pastedown).First edition. The classical scholar, traveller, and author Chandler (bap. 1737, d. 1810) was educated at Winchester College and Queen's College, Oxford, and awarded a demyship at Magdalen College in 1757. Following the publication of an annotated collection of fragments by Tyrtaeus, Simonides, Theognis, Alcaeus, Sappho, and other Greek poets in 1759, Chandler published a catalogue of the Arundel marbles in 1763 as Marmora Oxoniensis. 'In 1764 Chandler was introduced to the Society of Dilettanti by Robert Wood, editor of The Ruins of Palmyra, and was commissioned by the society to undertake a tour of exploration in Asia Minor and Greece in the first independent mission funded by the society. As treasurer he was given command of the expedition, and was accompanied by Nicholas Revett [.] and by the watercolour painter William Edmund Pars. They were instructed to make Smyrna their headquarters and thence "to make excursions to the several remains of antiquity in that neighbourhood"; to make exact plans and measurements; to make "accurate drawings of the bas-reliefs and ornaments"; and to copy all inscriptions, all the while keeping "minute diaries". Having embarked from Gravesend on 9 June 1764 the party spent about a year in Asia Minor [.]. On 20 August 1765 they left Smyrna for Athens, where Chandler gloomily noted that the Parthenon was in danger of being completely destroyed. He bought two fragments of the Parthenon frieze that had been built into houses in the town and was presented with a trunk that had fallen from one of the metopes and lay neglected in a garden. Although the party visited other parts of the Greek mainland their plans to visit Ithaca, Cephallonia, and Corfu were abandoned, principally because of the group's poor health' (ODNB).The party returned to England in November 1766, and the first work to be derived from the expedition was Ionian Antiquities, or, Ruins of Magnificent and Famous Buildings in Ionia, which was written by Chandler and illustrated with the architectural drawings of Revett and the topographical views of Pars, and published by the Society of Dilettanti in 1769. Chandler then published the epigraphy of the monuments, with a Latin translation, as Inscriptiones antiquae, pleraeque nondum editae, in Asia Minore et Graecia (Oxford: 1774), followed by his travel journals: Travels in Asia Minor (Oxford: 1775) and the present work. Blackmer states that, 'the account of Athens is very important; it was the most detailed that had yet appeared, and Chandler also made the first public announcement of the discovery of the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae', based on information provided by the French architect Joachim Bocher, who had discovered it. BAL comments that 'Chandler's two travel books proved popular' (p. 2547), and a pirated Dublin edition also appeared in 1776 (without maps), followed by a German edition in 1777 and a French translation in 1803. In his A History of the Oxford University Press (Oxford: 1975), Carter records that 500 copies of the first edition of Travels in Greece were printed (I, p. 602), of which a significant proportion are held institutionally (ESTC records some 73 such copies worldwide).Blackmer 319; ESTC T63359; Lowndes p. 408; Weber II, 554.         The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

London: W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1776-88 - 6 volumes, quarto (273 × 212 mm). Recently rebound to style in speckled half calf, decorative gilt spines, red morocco labels and numberings roundels, marbled sides. Scattered foxing and marginal dampstaining, marginal worming to first gathering of volume III. An attractive set. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Gibbon by Hall after Reynolds, 3 folding engraved maps. First editions (volume I in the second state) of Gibbon's magisterial history, handsomely bound and with all half-titles and errata leaves present. "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works which. maintain their hold upon the layman and continue to stimulate the scholar although they have been superseded in many, if nor most, details by subsequent advances of research and changes in the climate of opinion. Strahan [Gibbon's co-publisher] was the first to appreciate the importance of Gibbon's work: having read the manuscript of the first volume in manuscript, he immediately doubled the printing order - and the first edition of one thousand copies was sold within a fortnight. Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in an inimitable prose" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Norton 20, 23, 29; Printing and the Mind of Man 222.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] the most comprehensive collective edition works of Alexis Piron, given by Rigoley Juvigny. Copy with large margins. Pages in red and black tracks. Binders half blond calf iced mid nineteenth century. spine smooth ornate urn irons and rollers. parts of title and volume number in red shagreen. Light rubbing on some volumes in headdresses, borders. All very fresh. Very nice copy. Piron together theater, stories, and plays in verse and prose. The author began his career by epigrams and witticisms (talent that is found in the Tales), then poured into comedy working for comic opera and theâtre Fair. His tragedies, although they try to renew a genre dying at the time were not his best attempts. Piron gave the piece remains as his masterpiece in 1738: The Metromanie, which Grimm said she would stay as long as there is a theater and taste in France.
