Dimensioni 680 x 490. A scarce and finely engraved scientific double hemisphere world map, constructed with the prime meridian through Paris . The hemispheres are rotated on their axis through 45 degrees in order to define one watery, the other land. This effect creates the 'Hemisphere Terrestre' with the countries of the northern hemisphere, Africa and most of South America, while the 'Hemisphere Maritime' shows the East Indies, Australasia and the Pacific, and the southern tip of South America. Not surprisingly, as a consequence of this experiment from France's school of theoretical cartographers, Paris appears "precisement au centre de tous les continents du monde." This unusual projection, based on the work of the French Academie Royale des Sciences, also emphasises the continuity of the continents. This is a theme in keeping with the earlier work by French scientific map-makers, including Philippe Buache, and repeats typical theoretical concepts such as the 'Mer De L'Ouest' and the other fanciful water systems apparent in north-west America. The map was first published in Paris by Julien in 1753. This particular example is a later Italian edition published in Venice by Santini and Remondini. The map, set within an elaborate framework design, sits above paragraphs of French text explaining the projection. Thus Santini could name the two halves 'Hemisphere Maritime' and 'Hemisphere Terrestre'. Australia and New Zealand are only shown partially (despite Cook a decade before); the erroneous 'Mer de L'Ouest' appears in northwest America , with a large 'I. Nouvelle' just south of the Bering Straits; and Jesso is part of mainland Asia. Dimensioni 680 x 490 Dimensioni

Book of Ceilings, composed in the style of the antique grotesque: designed and etched by George Richardson

Title, engraved frontis, ii + [4] + 11 + [1]pp and 48 engraved plates (1 double page). Large folio.. Title page, engraved dedication and text in English and French. Richardson states in the preface dated 1774 that he had been employed under "Messrs. Adam of the Adelphi... in drawing and designing upwards of eighteen years' and his ceiling designs are in the Adam Manner; one, iinded is for Lord Scarsdale's house at Kedleston which the Adam Brothers were largely responsible for." Dedication leaf to Lord Scarsdale at Kedleston. List of subscribers included amongst others, Joseph Banks, William Chambers, John Carr of York, George Dance, Joseph Pickford at Derby, Thomas Sandby and many house owners including the Marquis of Rockingham and Scottish house owners with whom he may have been associated when working with Adam. Lovely copy. Quarter calf, marbled boards rebacked with new gilt lettering and raised bands on spine and new corners. Small repair patch on title page. It seems like Richardson hoped that this book would launch his architectural career. Eileen Harris [p388] suggests despite the long list of subscribers to the book did not "obviate the need for anyone to employ him personally."

IN PROVINCIAL CONGRESS, NEW-YORK, MAY 31, 1776...WHEREAS THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT OF THIS COLONY BY CONGRESS AND COMMITTEES, WAS INSTITUTED WHILE THE FORMER GOVERNMENT UNDER THE CROWN OF GREAT-BRITAIN EXISTED IN FULL FORCE, AND WAS ESTABLISHED FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF OPPOSING THE USURPATION OF THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT, AND WAS INTENDED TO EXPIRE ON A RECONCILIATION WITH GREAT BRITAIN, WHICH IT WAS THEN APPREHENDED WOULD SOON TAKE PLACE, BUT IS NOW CONSIDERED REMOTE AND UNCERTAIN...

[New York: John Holt, 1776. Letterpress broadside, 300 x 245 mm. Signed in print by Robert Benson, Secretary of the New York Provincial Congress. Very good. Matted. In a red morocco backed box. This broadside represents the end of colonial rule in New York and the beginning of independent government as a state. On May 10, 1776 the Continental Congress advised the colonies that Great Britain had failed to respond to their petitions and that each colony should form their own government. Virginia was the first to respond, formally rejecting Great Britain and forming its own government on May 15. As the annotations on this broadside show, it took New York several more weeks to work through the process, but by on July 10 the delegates met in White Plains to establish a new government, a week after the signing of the Declaration of Independence The present broadside by the New York Provincial Congress includes a printing of the May 10 resolution by the Continental Congress. The broadside then continues:"And whereas Doubts have arisen whether this Congress are invested with sufficient Power and Authority to deliberate and determine so important a Subject as the Necessity of erecting and constituting a new Form of Government and internal Police, to the Exclusion of all Foreign Jurisdiction, Dominion and Controul whatever. And whereas it appertains of Right solely to the People of this Colony to determine the said Doubts...." Three resolutions follow concerning new elections to either confirm the present representatives or appoint new ones to form a new, independent government. On the verso of the broadside, an unidentified hand has added a few notes concerning the process outlined on the broadside, and taken to establish a new government: "Candidates to be Chosen ye 18th Day of this Instant Return to be made ye 21st at 11 Clock Election the - - 25th Return Thursday - - 27 at 11 Clock in ye forenoon at which Time the County Committee Meet." In the end the new legislature met on July 10, but the chaos caused by the British invasion of New York delayed a formal state constitution until early 1777. Only two copies of this broadside are recorded, at the New York Historical Society and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Printing is ascribed to John Holt by Evans (Holt was later the first printer for the New York legislature, and fled with that body to Poughkeepsie when the British seized New York City). An extremely rare broadside that established the drafting and approval of New York's independence from Great Britain. EVANS 14934. ESTC W16538.

Together with his Orations, Character, Death, &c. With Copper-Plates.

London: W. Cater; Samuel Hayes; J. Wilkie; and E. Easton at Salisbury, 1776 - 3 volumes, octavo (200 × 120 mm). Nineteenth-century polished calf, contrast labels, spine gilt in compartments, double-ruled panel with floral corner-pieces to boards, plain single line edge-roll, marbled edges and endpapers, milled roll to the turn-ins. Contemporary armorial bookplate and early ownership inscription of H. C. Morewood to First volume; later plates of Hardress Llewellyn Lloyd in all three. Joints, headcaps and one tear to side very skilfully repaired, an excellent set. 8 engraved plates copied from 17th-century blocks, engraved illustrations within text. First collected edition of the writings of Thomas Coryate (1577?–1617). The Crudities, describing his tour from London to Venice and back, is his best known work, with many points of historical interest, including his admirable rendering of the story of William Tell (cited as the earliest in English); it is also remembered for the prefatory mock-panegyric verses by the most illustrious authors of the day, including Jonson, Chapman, Donne, Campion, Harington, and Drayton. The whole apparatus of the book, including these verses, the plates and the original spelling, is reproduced here. Coryate then set out on a second tour to Constantinople, visited Aleppo whence he walked to the Holy Land and back (sending notes home which were First published in Purchas his Pilgrimes, 1625), and then achieved the remarkable feat of walking from Jerusalem to India. After further wanderings within India, including a period living at the court of the Great Moghul, he died at or near Surat in Gujarat. Howgego, I, C198. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Minutemen document signed

1776. Signed. (AMERICAN REVOLUTION). Minutemen document signed. Newbury [Massachusetts]: April 11, 1775. One sheet of paper, 6-1/4 by 5-3/4 inches, manuscript in ink on recto and verso. $9200.Very scarce and desirable receipt signed by 11 minutemen in Newbury, Massachusetts, on April 11, 1775, an intriguing artifact of the Revolutionary War era.The document reads ""Received of Capt. Gerrish by the hand of Mr. Eliphalet Kilbon the sum affixed to our respective names in the within, Newbury, April 11, 1775"" and is signed by John Cheney, Oliver Goodridge, Abraham Sawyer, Abner Woodman, John Carneige, Jedediah Currier, Nath. Pearson, Nathan Adams, Jacob Hale, John Noyes, and Enoch Boynton. Several of these names are penned on the verso, in a uniform hand, with payment amounts noted next to each man's name.Massachusetts was officially declared to be in a state of rebellion in February, 1775. In late March of 1775, John Hancock, president of the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts, ""declaring that the people of Massachusetts were threatened by a powerful army, formally called upon them to prepare to defend themselves to the uttermost. Certain units of the Massachusetts militia were designated as minutemen, and instructed to go into swift action in the event that Gage's troops came out of Boston on the offensive"" (Alden, A History of the American Revolution, 173). The British garrison attempted to act on its orders to disarm the rebels and arrest their leaders, especially Hancock and Samuel Adams, which led to the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, scarcely more than a week after this particular pay receipt was signed. Faint fold lines, mild edge-wear, archival tape reinforcement in three places on verso. An extremely good and scarce Revolutionary War document.

Venice 1776 - Map. Engraving with original hand outline color. Image measures 18.75 x 22" This beautiful map of the Great Lakes depicts "western Canada and northern Louisiana," or in the parlance of American history, a substantial portion of the Northwest Territory and part of Pennsylvania. It extends from the upper Mississippi River Valley east to Lake Ontario, and from James Bay south to Philadelphia. The map shows Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie in wonderful detail, with Lake Ontario extending outside the right margin. Chicagon (Chicago) is named along with many early settlements, numerous French forts, and Indian villages and territories, making the map a fine document of the Louisiana Territory. The map is also notable for its detailed depiction of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. A note by the Mississippi explains, in French, that the course of the river is known only up the depicted point and that its source is still unknown. Just above, in the unmapped territory, is a beautiful rococco title cartouche. The map is based on D'Anville's influential map of North America of 1746 and was published in Santini's "Atlas Universel dressé sur les meuilleures cartes modernes" of 1776. It is in excellent condition with wide side margins as issued. Dark imprint on bright paper with no tears. Small chips to rig Paolo Santini was a Venetian cartographer and publisher who worked closely with Janvier. This map of the Great Lakes is a fine example of his work.

3 volumes, octavo (203 x 120 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, green morocco labels, smooth spines richly decorated gilt with central fleuron tools, all edges red, marbled endpapers. Volume 1 wrongly paginated from p. 153 (numbered 143). Armorial bookplate to each front pastedown; small annotations in a contemporary hand to titles. Slight insect damage to tails of spines, bottom edges of boards and fore margins of middle leaves in Volume 2, some surface loss to front board of Volume 3, faint dampstaining to margins of Volume 1 but overall contents bright. An excellent copy. First edition. Holbach divides his materialist treatise on morals, one of his later works, into three parts: theory, practice and duties of private life. The first part outlines the necessity for tolerance and the dangers of luxury for states and individuals alike. In the second part he pursues his condemnation of luxury and is as much critical of its opposite vice, begging, advocating work as the saviour of humanity: "Commercial enterprise in only useful when it serves agriculture, manufacturing industries, and the development of populations … it is a dangerous poison when its only purpose is to feed man's proneness to luxury and vanity". The third and final part details the duties of husbands, parents, children etc. as well as the merits of marriage, although Holbach also sees the advantages of divorce. Further in the text he deplores the drain the city has on the countryside as agricultural workers become domestic servants. La Morale universelle was also published as a one quarto volume in the same year.

Fortin.

Paris: F. G. Deschamps et l'Auteur 1776 - with 30 double-page engraved plates, small piece missing from edge of plate 7, slightly affecting printed area, minor spotting and a few minor stains, pp. viii, 30 plates, 40, 8vo, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red lettering piece, crack in lower joint, corners worn, headcaps defective, sound. 'Seconde édition' is a bit of a misnomer, since the Atlas coelestis, London, 1729, though 'welcomed because of its unprecedented accuracy . did suffer from some deficiencies. It was, for one thing, almost too big to use, with its twenty-four-by-twenty inch plates . Fortin was not an astronomer but an artisan, a globe maker for the French royal family [and instrument maker for Lavoisier]. It is not known how or why he was commissioned to produce a revised edition of Flamsteed's star atlas, but it turned out to be a very successful enterprise. All of Flamsteed's twenty-six plates were re-engraved on a much smaller scale, so that they now measured only 23 by 18 cm. (One of Flamsteed's original plates, depicting Hydra, was a double-page folding plate, and in Fortin's editions it was divided in two, increasing the number of plates to twenty-seven). In the process, the engravers greatly improved the aesthetic appeal of Flamsteed's often awkward figures' (Out of this World, Linda Hall Library exhibition). The total number of plates in this edition is 30, as Fortin added others. This could be taken to mean that the enterprise was Fortin's own initiative. An attempt has been made at some point to colour in the exposed parts of the boards, but if once matching, the colour has now turned red.

OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATURE OF CIVIL LIBERTY, THE PRINCIPLES OF GOVERNMENT, AND THE JUSTICE AND POLICY OF THE WAR WITH AMERICA.

London printed, Boston, re-printed: T. & J. Fleet, 1776. - 71pp. Half calf and marbled boards. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Titlepage moderately toned, some light scattered foxing to text. Very good. Price was a well-known British Presbyterian minister and the author of several notable books about moral philosophy and economics. He was particularly friendly with a number of Americans, and vigorously argued their part in the British debate over colonial taxation and government. This is one of the most influential political pamphlets written by an Englishman who sympathized with the American colonies. "It is said that the encouragement derived from this book had no inconsiderable share in determining the Americans to declare their independence" - DNB. Price was later offered honorary American citizenship by the Continental Congress, which he declined. This work first appeared in February 1776 in London and went through numerous editions. The American editions are quite rare. HOWES P586. AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE 224w. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 76-118 (British ed). EVANS 15032. SABIN 65452.

The Second and Third Voyages were translated from the official accounts but with editorial notes by an anonymous Finnish editor (Second Voyage) and Oedmann (Third Voyage). The second voyage caused animosity between the editor and Sparrman who condemned the work and is ironically also listed as an author in the book. Du Rietz 1, 9, 12; Forbes 126 (Third Voyage) 1776
