Observations? at King George's Island in the South Sea' [and] 'Variation of the Compass, as observed on the Endeavour Bark' [and] 'Transitus Venus' [from] Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society

[Royal Society], 1767-, [London] 1776 - Large octavo, folding plate; good in modern speckled boards. Royal society transactions. An attractive collection of three articles relating to Cook and the Endeavour voyage from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for 1771. The collection gives an interesting insight into some of the chief scientific concerns of Cook's first voyage, with three separate notices relating to the voyage and particularly the Transit of Venus as observed from Tahiti. The first is the "Observations ? at King George's Island in the South Sea" co-written with Charles Green the astronomer. Green is an interesting figure, for many years assistant to the Astronomer Royal at Greenwich, in 1763 he sailed on the testing voyage of John Harrison's famous chronometer H4. Green later quarrelled violently with Nevil Maskleyne and joined the Navy in a huff, but their relationship was sufficiently mended for Green to be recommended for the Endeavour voyage. He died in 1771 from dysentery contracted in Batavia. The article features extracts from the Log and an interesting plate which shows diagrammatically the differing readings of Cook and Green. The second article is a more technical piece on the "Variation of the Compass, as observed on board the Endeavour Bark", a pressing concern for eighteenth-century navigation. The last essay here is a letter from Johan Maurits Mohr, who settled in Batavia in 1737 where he built a fine observatory that was visited by Cook, and who had himself observed the Transit of Venus and taken notes. The great bibliographer Sir Maurice Holmes noted the first two articles from the Philosophical Transactions, but omitted the third. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A General History of the Lives and Adventures of the Most famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-Robbers and Pirates. The Whole interspersed with several diverting Tales

London: Printed and Sold by H. Fenwick, No. 20 Newgate Street, 1776. First edition. Hardcover. Good. London: Printed and Sold by H. Fenwick, No. 20 Newgate Street, NO DATE but c.1775-77. 12mo. 156pp. With engraved frontispiece depicting Claude Duval robbing Squire Roper in Windsor Forest. §The printer Henry Fenwick operated from various different addresses in the locale from the early 1760s until possibly 1782, including both No. 20 and No. 89 Newgate Street. Maxted identifies him as working from a Cheapside address in 1774-75. He published 'The Lives of Noted Highwaymen', (100pp., 8vo) from a Snow Hill address at around the same period (ESTC tentatively dates it as 1775); this was a reprint of The History of Notorious Highwaymen (London: J. Lever, London Wall, no date but probably 1765-70. Also 100pp.) - both are rare. §The volume offered can be dated with confidence to the late 1770s and is UNRECORDED: No copies held. §A cheap production, on low grade paper stock, with scattered textual browning. A few leaves closely cropped, touching letters at outer margin. §SLIGHTLY DEFECTIVE (see illustrations) with loss to edge of four leaves at edges. Leaves F, L, and N3 have natural paper flaws, resulting in small loss to the lower corner of N3 clear of text; indistinct printing of a few letters to recto of L at upper corner; and (more seriously) a printing flaw to F, with short accompanying tear, where the leaf seems to have been creased during the printing process. D2 has small loss of text to outer margin, which could be a paper flaw but equally the result of a small piece being torn away by a reader. In other respects a very good copy, neatly rebound sometime in the last century in quarter calf, gilt lettering, marbled paper boards. No ownership names or inscriptions.         The Death of General Wolfe, Obiit Patriam Pugnando'

1776 - A very fine, probably 18th-century, reworking of William Woolett's engraving of Benjamin West's famous work When West exhibited the original of this image, at the Royal Academy in 1771, it caused a sensation: for the first time a major work by a major artist depicted modern heroes playing out recent events in modern costume. Sir Joshua Reynolds, at first antagonistic to the project, when given a private preview of the work remarked `I forsee that this picture will not only become one of the most popular, but occasion a revolution in art'. The picture was in instant success and the engraving by William Woolett which followed `one of the most commercially successful prints ever published' (H. von Erffa & A. Staley The Paintings of Benjamin West 1986, p.213). The present reworking of Woolett's engraving is of a very high quality, and to judge from its dimensions, is not worked over a traced base but a true redrawing. The published work is approximately 5% smaller than the drawing. If not a professional artist, then George Kendall was clearly a draughtsman of great ability, but unfortunately no information, other than that provided by his grandson, is available. "Wolfe went forward to some high ground on the right, where he had an advanced post of the Louisbourg grenadiers much exposed to the enemy's sharpshooters. He had already been hit twice, and here a third bullet struck him in the breast. With the help of two or three grenadiers he walked about a hundred yards to the rear, and then had to lie down. Don't grieve for me, he said to one of them; I shall be happy in a few minutes. Take care of yourself, as I see you are wounded. He asked eagerly how the battle went, and some officers who came up told him that the French had given way everywhere, and were being pursued to the walls of the town. According to one eye-witness, 'he raised himself up on this news and smiled in my face.' ' Now', said he, 'I die contented', and from that instant the smile never left his face till he died (13 Sept. 1759; English Hist. Review , xii. 763). Wolfe was tall and slight, of Celtic type, and wore his red hair undisguised. He was a good son, a staunch friend, a kindly though strict commanding officer. He owned that he was 'a whimsical sort of person,' of a warm and uncertain temper, and that in writing he sometimes let fall expressions that were 'arrogant and vain.' But he claimed that this warmth of temper enabled him to hold his own, and 'will find the way to a glorious, or at least a firm and manly end when I am of no further use to my friends or country, or when I can be serviceable by offering my life for either' (29 June 1753). As a soldier he was a rare mixture of dash and painstaking, of Condé, and 'the old Dessauer'" ( DNB ). Cf. H. von Erffa & A. Staley The Paintings of Benjamin West 1986, p. 21; cf. Spendlove p.81; Original ink wash, heightened with white, calligraphic title beneath `The Death of General Wolfe' with an original ink wash vignette of a grief-stricken putti leaning against a memorial urn on a pedestal, the pedestal with the lettering `AEt/ 35', to the left of the pedestal a drum, two standards and a cannon barrel, this vignette flanked by the words `Obiit Patriam pugnando.'. Inscribed on verso: `Indian Ink drawing by my grandfather George Kendall b. 21 Mar 1753/ Henry [?] Kendall 15 Feb 1895'. Laid paper, mounted on 19th-century board. Sheet size: 19 1/8 x 24 1/2 inches.

Political tracts. Containing, The False Alarm . Falkland Islands. The Patriot; and, Taxation No Tyranny

London: W. Strahan & T. Cadell, 1776. Octavo; early repair to front hinge and spine, a very good copy withal in contemporary sheep. First collected edition of these political pamphlets, published anonymously. Probably the most famous of the four is the last, 'Taxation no Tyranny; An Answer to the Resolutions and Address of the American Congress', a scathing attack on those 'zealots of anarchy' who have 'denied to the Parliament of Britain the right of taxing the American Colonies'. Bitterly opposed to the War of Independence, Johnson inveighs with a sustained denunciation which includes his famous quip 'If slavery be thus fatally contagious, how is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?'.

A Discourse upon some late improvements of the Means for Preserving the Health of Mariners . Delivered at the Anniversary Meeting of the Royal Society, November 30, 1776. By Sir John Pringle, Baronet, President. Published by their Order

London: Royal Society, 1776. Small quarto, [iv], 44 pp. with the half-title, woodcut title device and headpiece, leaf C4 a cancel as usual; a very good clean copy in modern green quarter morocco. Captain Cook's measures against scurvy. One of the most significant of all the printed works relating to Cook's voyages. This is the first appearance in print of Cook's epoch-making account of the successful measures taken against scurvy on his first two voyages. There were several later versions and translations, but this original edition has long been acknowledged as a major rarity. The paper on scurvy was read to the Royal Society by its president, Sir John Pringle - in the absence of Cook himself, then just beginning his final voyage - as the year's Copley medal award, and immediately published in this form. Pringle's long presentation address, quoting directly from Cook and other sources, is followed by Cook's paper and an extract from a letter by Cook to Pringle written from Plymouth Sound in July 1776. The paper subsequently appeared in the official account of the second voyage and in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. In 1783 a series of six of Pringle's discourses at the annual presentations of the Copley medal was published in one volume. The winning of the battle against scurvy was one of the most important achievements in the general field of exploration. It made possible the major voyages that followed. As Robert Hughes has so aptly put it in The Fatal Shore: 'malt juice and pickled cabbage put Europeans in Australia as microchip circuitry would put Americans on the moon…'. The NUC locates only four copies in American libraries, those at Harvard, John Carter Brown, National Library of Medicine and the Naval Observatory Library.

Characteres Generum Plantarum , quas in itinere ad insulas maris australis, collegerunt, descripserunt, delinearunt, annis 1772-1775

London: B. White, T. Cadell, & P. Elmsly, 1776. Quarto, with 78 engraved plates (numbered 1-75 and including 38a & b & 51a); two plates bound in upside-down; an excellent copy, completely uncut, in recent half blue morocco. c. Natural history of the voyage. First edition: the Linnaean classification of botanical discoveries made during Cook's second voyage. The descriptions are by Anders Sparrman and the engravings are after drawings by the younger Forster. The Forsters, father and son, travelled as scientists on the second voyage. Their intellectual arrogance earned them considerable ridicule - including some mockery for the present work 'owing to the minute scale on which the plants were drawn as compared with the size of the paper' (Holmes). Scientifically, the work may not now be seen as being of major botanical significance, but it is nonetheless one of the earliest sources for our knowledge of the plants of Australasia and Polynesia, has considerable significance for the history of Cook's second voyage, and is one of a surprisingly small number of monuments to the scientific achievements of the three voyages. This excellent uncut copy has an eighteenth-century presentation inscription to the Aberdeen Medical Society from Colin Allan, Assistant Surgeon to the Royal Artillery, St Vincents, dated June 1796. The Characteres is one of the earliest publications resulting from the second voyage; the rush to get it into print should probably be seen in the light of the quarrel with the Admiralty over the Forsters' claims to publishing rights for the official account of the voyage. This pre-emptive scientific publication may well have been intended to show the strength of the Forster camp.

Omiah's Farewell; Inscribed to the Ladies of London [bound with five other works, see below]

London: G. Kearsly, 1776. Quarto, six works bound together; some water-staining and a little dusted; 20th-century calf, gilt, crimson morocco spine label. Sleep with me beneath the Bread-tree's shade. First edition, scarce, of this famous poem lampooning Omai and his supposed liaisons with the ladies of London society. In this 154-line poem, Omai (properly "Mai") dwells sadly on the necessity of parting from the women, who are each referred to under the partial disguise of asterisks: 'Oft Lady ******* hast thou promise made,/ To sleep with me beneath the Bread-tree's shade,/ For brighter suns, to leave this clouded sky,/ And with Omiah share Eternity'. Although obvious in its intentions as a comic poem, the work is also notable for its clear implication that Omai's return to Tahiti, loaded with gee-gaws and fireworks, represented a missed opportunity, when he could so easily have been returned 'with some useful knowledge… in British culture' (Harriet Guest, "Omai's Things", in Cook & Omai, p. 33). Omai is warmly described as a man of wonderful temperament and great charm, but is also compared - unfavourably, it must be said - with the Chinese boy Hwang ya Tung brought to England around the same time by Captain John Blake, and who was also painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds. This rare work is bound here in the appropriate company of five other satirical poems published between 1777 and 1779, including William Combe's "The Diaboliad" in a new edition and Voltaire's "Ghost to the Apostle of the Sinless Foundery" (a full listing available on request).

Priced throughout in a contemporary hand and with some annotations. A good copy. Remarkable auction catalogue containing 4542 lots of books and 51 lots of prints; a very large collection totalling over 21,000 books. The collection is particularly rich in sciences. From a bibliographical point of view this is an important catalogue. &c.

Nella stamperia vescovile Monauniana, Trento. 1776 - A c. Bella legatura in cartoncino semirigido dorato coeva. Opera molto rara. Formato: 68, LXXII p., [1] ritr., [1] c. di tav. ripieg. 4° (23 cm), cart. Buono, ordinari segni d?uso e del tempo.

A Discourse upon some late improvements of the Means for Preserving the Health of Mariners . Delivered at the Anniversary Meeting of the Royal Society, November 30, 1776. By Sir John Pringle, Baronet, President. Published by their Order

Royal Society, London 1776 - Small quarto, [iv], 44 pp. with the half-title, woodcut title device and headpiece, leaf C4 a cancel as usual; a very good clean copy in modern green quarter morocco. As Robert Hughes has so aptly put it in The Fatal Shore: 'malt juice and pickled cabbage put Europeans in Australia as microchip circuitry would put Americans on the moon?'. The NUC locates only four copies in American libraries, those at Harvard, John Carter Brown, National Library of Medicine and the Naval Observatory Library.

York: by A. Ward, for J. Dodsley, T. Cadell, J. Robson, and T. Durham, in London, and W. Creech and J. Balfour, Edinburgh, 1776. York: by A. Ward, for J. Dodsley, T. Cadell, J. Robson, and T. Durham, in London, and W. Creech and J. Balfour, Edinburgh,, 1776. and the Propagation of Timber in His Majesty's Dominions: as it was delivered in the Royal Society on the 15th Day of October, 1662, Upon Occasion of certain Quaeries propounded to that illustrious Assembly, by the Honourable the Principal Officers and Commissioners of the Navy. Together With An Historical Account of the Sacredness and Use of Standing Groves. With Notes by A Hunter M.D. F.R.S. Large quarto (315 × 240 mm). Half calf to style, edges entirely uncut. With the original subscriber's ticket signed by Hunter, and with the original prepublication advertisement leaf loosely inserted. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 40 engraved plates of which 1 folding, folding letterpress table. Some light foxing and offsetting, a few inserted botanical specimens, an excellent copy. First Hunter edition, complete with the original advertisement leaf and subscriber's ticket as receipt. First published in 1664 and famously the first book to be printed by order of the Royal Society, Sylva was his most important work to be published during Evelyn's lifetime (his famous diary not being published until 1818). During the 1640s and 1650s production of glass and iron increased rapidly and the wood used to fire the furnaces and factories was not being replaced by fresh planting. This led to a serious shortage of wood from which the Navy could construct ships. Evelyn appealed to the king for a concerted campaign of reforestation and claimed in his preface that he had induced landowners to plant many millions of trees. In his own preface, Hunter remarks that "soon after the publication of the Sylva... the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships, [used] in the last war... were constructed from Oaks planted at that time.

Giuseppe Coda, Napoli 1776 - Scarce Neapolitan equestrian title, with only five libraries appearing to have it on OCLC FirstServe. 8vo. 20 by 15 cm. xi, 194 pp. The book is a cross between a primer on horses and coaching and a celebration of the Neapolitan tradition in particular, with special homage to Cajetanus Pezzella, a then renowned horseman and equerry to the Prince of Francavilla. The book has an element also of the hoary Italianate "mirror" book, a self-help book for rulers to gentlemen instructing them on how to behave properly and excel in their role. Novi argues in essence that the dedication of a Pezzella is a sine qua non for mastery in horsemanship while lamenting that such an accomplishment may not be rewarded with heightened social status. Of perhaps greatest interest in the work is how Novi identifies a special "code of honor" amongst the cocchieri napolitani. No less a figure than Benedetto Croce has said that this code serves as a parable of Neapolitan republican character. Light occasional foxing. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Printed and Sold by R. Sayer and J. Bennett, 1776 - Folio (558 × 373 mm) Late 18th-, early 19th-century blind-ruled half calf, marbled boards, attractive violet and sepia, flower-patterned pastedowns. A little rubbed on the boards, the corners through, splitting to the joints and chipping head and tail of the spine, some stabilisation and restoration, light toning to the maps, some faint offsetting, a few short splits to edges and on the folds, a couple of minor professional repairs, else a very good copy. Letterpress title and index leaf. 22 engraved maps on 48 sheets (all folding or double-page except for one single-page) by Henry Mouzon, Joshua Fry & Peter Jefferson, William Scull, Thomas Jefferys, Samuel Holland and others, hand-coloured in outline. First issue of the 1776 edition, published one year after the first, most maps in this atlas are dated 1775, with some dated 1774. "The chief publication used by English and American officers during the American Revolution" (Karpinski), with large maps of 11 of the 13 colonies, and of French Canada. As Geographer to the Prince of Wales, and subsequently the King, Jefferys had unparalleled access to the latest surveys of the American colonies and "is remembered in particular for some of the most important eighteenth-century maps of the Americas, a series given cohesion and impetus by the preliminary hostilities and eventual outbreak of the Seven Years' War." (ODNB). After Jefferys' death in November 1771, his business passed to Robert Sayer and John Bennett, who, in 1775, issued all of Jefferys' separately issued maps in atlas form for the first time, under the umbrella title The American Atlas. This is considered to be the most important eighteenth-century atlas for America, described by Walter Ristow as "one of the most authoritative and comprehensive atlases of America a geographical description of the whole continent of America, as portrayed in the best available maps in the latter half of the eighteenth century as a major cartographic reference work it was, very likely, consulted by American, English, and French civilian administrators and military officers during the Revolution". The geographical knowledge of America gathered here was to have impact not only on the strategy of the War of Independence, but also influenced the course of future treaty negotiations. The maps comprise: 1,2,3: Braddock Mead (alias John Green). "A Chart of North and South America, including the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans " Published 10 June 1775. Laurens, 'La Bibliotheque Orientale de Bartélemi d'Herbelot', 1978. D'Herbelot (1625-1695), studied Hebrew, Syriac, Aramaic, persian and Turkish in Paris and afterwards in Florence under the patronage of the Grand Duke, Ferdinand II. He was later professor of Syriac at the College de France. This is the first encyclopaedia of the Islamic world, from Arabia & Persia to the Maghreb & al-Andalus.The subjects; history, biographies, art, politics, traditions, sects, geography etc., are arranged alphabetically and, crucially, are based for the first time on original sources, Arabic, Persian and Turkish, which are listed in a 2-page bibliography. This is the second edition. The first, of 1697, was seen through the press after the death of Herbelot by the ditinguished orientalist Antoine Galland, who contributed a preface, also present in this second edition. In it he stresses the erudition and originality of the work. There are other editions of 1777-79 (4 vols. quarto), and 1781. Binding somewhat scuffed, with slight loss at head and tail of spine, one corner bumped, upper margins of a few leaves at beginning damp-stained, nonetheless a very good copy, clean and crisp, of a landmark in Islamic studies. Captain Jonathan Carver (1732-1780) was a traveler, surveyor and cartographer who made this map based on his travels for Thomas Jeffery's American Atlas. Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Partnering with John Bennett around the 1760s, the two published the works of well-known cartographers such as Kitchen, Jefferys, Belling, d'Anville and others. This is the first state of this scarce map.

The original heroic painting by Benjamin West (1738-1820) of 1771 was an instant success and the engraving by William Woollett which followed was one of the most commercial successful prints ever published (Von Erffa & Staley, The paintings of Benjamin West, p.213). - Mounted on linnen, occasionally faint rubbing, otherwise fine.

Eisler 259; cf. Lex. der Pädagogik II, pp. 216-220. First edition of an extensive essay on the study of philosophy, by Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841), presenting philosophy not as metaphysical, but as the basis for all science. It provides a frame of thinking and a classification by means of comparison and arrangement of notions and variations; philosophy is so to speak the "grammar of thinking". He is further convinced that a talent for the study of philosophy should be already present at a young age and that it should gradually grow by means of other scholarly studies.Binding slightly rubbed; stamp on title-page. . .

Napoli: Giuseppe Coda, 1776. Napoli: Giuseppe Coda, 1776. First Edition. Paper on card (semi-hardcover). Very Good. Scarce Neapolitan equestrian title, with only five libraries appearing to have it on OCLC FirstServe.

(Watzlawick). Des rousseurs, mais bon exemplaire. // You can browse all my books on latude.net [Attributes: Hard Cover]
